Template:Canadian party colour

I would like you to consider reverting this edit. If row-name is to be used in election results tables, like I think was your initial intention, party name abbreviations will need to be used. So that, for example, "Conservative" will be displayed, and not the whole article name, Conservative Party of Canada or Conservative Party of Canada (1867–1942). I keep saying to myself I want to create Canadian party colour/name, but unfortunately I haven't found the time to dive into templates. 117Avenue (talk) 05:58, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't mind using the /name method as a means to keep displayed names short, but remember that if we do that we'll have to make 12 versions of each party on /name so that the links go to the right jurisdiction's version of that party. Fortunately, it is a lot easier to do that with this template than with the existing many-subpage system. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 06:51, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
I can't think of doing it any other way, except to hard code it into the articles. A template to do the job will create consistency across the articles, and should prevent the use of plurals. 117Avenue (talk) 03:13, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

While starting to compile the list of parties, I realized that typing put the whole name of the party was a bit counter productive to the template's function, which is to make things easier. But there still needed to be someway to disambiguate the province sections of the big parties. Since I wanted consistency in the input text, I wanted the province to be at the beginning or the end of the input text. I tried to take a survey of all the parties, and found that most put it at the beginning, so that is what I ran with. I wanted to check with you if "ON United Farmers" was a good replacement for "United Farmers of Ontario", etc., but now I see you are already expanding the list. 117Avenue (talk) 00:12, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

I was thinking about making a list of parties, so I'm glad that I noticed yours while semi-protecting pages, because mine would not have been as elegantly set up. I like using the two-letter postal abbreviations rather than the full article names: it saves space and makes the names easier to guess. I also like having the jurisdiction code first because that means that every line of a table's code on the editing page will start with the province's code in a nice column rather than buried in the middle of each line. Well done! —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 00:46, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Do you have any other provinces that you want the bot to check? (Members of the Canadian House of Commons) Cheers! Feedintm (talk) 22:24, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

List of premiers of Alberta

I've reverted your upgrade to List of premiers of Alberta, as your new template does not allow for the date of the party designation of their leader, or a link to the leadership election. 117Avenue (talk) 18:08, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I support the addition of links to leadership elections. I'd rather not add an extra column because the table is already a bit cramped on small screens. I also don't think we should put it in the place of the appointment m-dash because then we can't link the leadership elections of premiers who came to power through an election. How about I add the link under the party name; that's a relatively empty column. In small font it could read for elections "leader as of 2011 contents" and for appointments "leader as of 2011". —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 19:48, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Sorry for starting this conversation, then being absent, I thought I would have more free time this week. I don't see the problem you are referring to, with replacing the dash with the appointment, it would read "2006 designation (26th Assembly)<>2008 election (27th Assembly)", it doesn't take up any more room. The problem I see is the loss of day of year, "1905 commissioning (none)<>1905 election (1st Assembly)" could be confusing. Would the table be too crowded for "2 December 2006 designation (26th Assembly)<>3 March 2008 election (27th Assembly)"? 117Avenue (talk) 04:11, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
Don't apologize to me, my presence on Wikipedia was even more sparse over the holiday. The problem with changing the dash to text is that premiers who came to power by election rather than by designation (a common phenominon outside of Alberta) wouldn't have a link to their leadership race. I think that links to leadership races would be useful for every premier regardless of how they came to power, because the lists are about the people's political careers. We could, of course, add links to leadership elections on top of the first election for those premiers. However, that would make the mandates column jump back-and-forth between dates. For example, at the bottom of List of Premiers of Ontario, we would have, in this order: Harris's 1999 election, Eves's 2002 leadership race, McGuinty's 1996 leadership race, and then McGuinty's 2003 election. I don't like jumping back in time within the column like that. I think that the party column is the best place to put the leadership race because it only has one line of text in a cell that will always be at least two lines tall. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 17:53, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I understand you now. Sometimes I need the reminder that Alberta has a strange history. 117Avenue (talk) 03:01, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

What do you think would be a good phrasing of that line? Now I have "Named leader by {leadership}", with a link to the leadership election the word "appointment" in the variable field, but that doesn't sound quite right. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 19:47, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm thinking "Named leader in {leadership}", where the link is only a year. This way it should be universal for any terminology, elected, appointed, etc. 117Avenue (talk) 03:38, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Is this better: Template:Canadian_first_minister_list/testcases#Alberta? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 02:09, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Looks good. 117Avenue (talk) 05:07, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Your HD question

Did you notice that I replied to your question at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2011 December 18? — Sebastian 04:22, 2 January 2012 (UTC)    (I stopped watching this page. If you would like to continue the talk, please do so here and ping me.)

I've been away from my normal computer, but I did notice that today. The HTML solution seems to be the best option, thanks. Do you know if I can make only the problem line use the tr and td tags, or do I have to make the whole template use them? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 07:30, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't know, but it should be easy to give it a try in your sandbox. BTW, in the meantime I became aware of Template:Chinese name, which seems to be able to do that without HTML. — Sebastian 17:50, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Talk:Virgin Festival

Hey Arctic.gnome can you possibly go back to Talk:Virgin Festival and correct this edit? I'm really surprised. You are more familiar with the WikiProject Canada than any other editor out there. An off day? :) Argolin (talk) 00:29, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

You'll have to explain what you want corrected, I don't see the problem with that edit. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 04:15, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh my! You didn't use |music=yes? Argolin (talk) 07:07, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
I see. I wasn't tagging articles for their specific subprojects, I was just using WP:AWB to do a mass-addition of articles to WP:CANADA. Adding the articles to subprojects and assessing them is the next step, but it is a much slower one. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs)

Ah! lol. Sorry I didn't notice the AWB. I thought it was odd that you, of all people, would misuse the template.

I'm drivven to dispair sometimes adding articles to the music project. Editors are happy to tag articles as orphan, citations needed, etc... but leave the discussion page red. My favourite is merge perposals with no projects on the discussion page. Who's going to know about it? Argolin (talk) 12:14, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

legislation template - Constitutional statutes

Hi, Arctic.gnome - I have another template issue/request. I'm planning to work on the various statutes that make up the Constitution, and would like to include a infobox for each one, using the statute template: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Template:Infobox_legislation. The problem I've got is the image: I'd like to use the coat of arms that is used for the Canadian Constitution infobox (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Constitution_of_Canada) and the Canadian History template (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/History_of_Canada). I've found the link for it: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:Canadian_Shield.svg, but when I plug it into the statute infobox template, it never formats properly. Could you help me on this? Sorry to be a pain. Thanks, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 10:46, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

It works when I try to use it. Can you link to an example of it not working so I can see what's going wrong? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 03:33, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Well, if you don't mind me mucking up your talk page: Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 02:04, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Constitution Act, 1867
File:Canadian Shield.svg
You're having the same problem in templates as you are in your messages: full urls. Wikipedia's code uses double square brackets to for internal links instead of using the full url. If I want to send you to the article about St. John's, I only have to write St. John's St. John's, not the full url http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/St._John's. I can also use a pipe to make a link display something different than where it goes, so like this produces like this. This works the same way with non-articles, so I can link to Template:Infobox legislation or User talk:Mr Serjeant Buzfuz without writing the full url. These are all called wikilinks. Files work a bit differently; if you put the file name in double square brakets, it will show the file, so you have to start it with a colon like this :File:Canadian Shield.svg. In the template you want to use, the documentation says that the template will add the double square brackets and the "File:" prefix automatically, so all you have to give the template is the image's name, including the ".svg" part. When you do that, the image will be far too big, but the template lets you control the size using the parameter called "imagesize", which is set to 70px in the other templates that use the shield. You may want to read Help:Wiki markup for more information about the code that Wikipedia is written in. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 02:48, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll try tinkering with it. my problem is that I'm of the generation that a computer is a fancy word processor. with pictures. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 04:09, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Arctic.gnome,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

 • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
 • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
 • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
 • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
 • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 15:37, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Canadian election templates

Thank you for all the deletion notices of Canadian election templates. I won't get in the way of progress; those party templates have obviously completed their duty. Of course, the fun will likely be redone when WP moves its templating to Lua. Dl2000 (talk) 00:11, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Template WikiProject Canada

Arctic.gnome, I posted at Template talk:WikiProject Canada last week. Is there anyone in particluar that looks afer it? I'm really, really, reallllly, tired of checking each day the stjohns=yes issue. Thank you kindly... Argolin (talk) 04:06, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Replied. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 02:48, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks progress! Is there a separate or special name for the talk page categories? I think I just answered myself. They are entirely predicated on the placement of a project banner, so they may have a distinct name. Argolin (talk) 04:40, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Can you please reply at Template talk:WikiProject Canada? How long for a stats table for them? Today/Tomorrow/Next Week/Next Month/Next Year? Please give us something. Argolin (talk) 06:00, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Don't bother. Argolin (talk) 09:40, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Tagging Canadian Songs/Albums

You mentioned earlier that you use AWB. Does it really speed up the talk page bannering? I added Skinny Puppy's discography of about 50 articles yesterday. It took an unholy amount of time. There are just too many Songs/Albums for one user to add. I can suggest a category if you would like to test the AWB for me in an album category. From the AWB documentation, it sounds like it would be perfect. Most items will be class=Stub or Start and the Albums project will generally not have an importance rating. Let me know. Thanks Argolin (talk) 14:17, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Don't bother replying. I have signed up for AWB. It is more than a gloified word processor for wiki. Canadian music albums/songs are the easiest, by far, articles I've had to add to our projects. I've slowed down on the number I'm adding becasue (believe it or not) not all articles in Category:Albums by artist are linked to Canadian music, let alone any other category. I was about to exclaim "for shame wikipedia" but it is "for shame WP:Albums". Argolin (talk) 07:37, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

I rarely stop by but noticed the deletion bit about /IndCon which came from you, or from your bot I suppose. So I wasn't around to dispute it, and would have had to dig in the muck again to remember where it was used; it was from one of those project,s in this case to do with historical legislature composition in BC, which got derailed by "tinkerers" screwing with things that weren't broken and so getting me distracted from actual USEFUL things..."IndCon" was for the designation "Independent Conservative" obviously; either from the days of when BC didn't have parties at all (pre 1903) or for later Conservatives who did not sit with the Government. Probably somebody has just levelled all those colours/templates to "Conservative" but it's not historically accurate. - Skookum1

thanks for fixing QC UN

On the Bonaventure (provincial electoral district) page, you'll notice the 1989 election has a "Unity Party (Quebec)" and a Lemon Party. I'm astonished that someone was industrious enough to create a colour for the latter; as for the Unity Party, it was the name the Equality Party (Quebec) used in ridings outside of Montreal; they elected four members in 1989 but dropped to a fraction of a percent in every election since. My question is, how/whether to handle these with Canadian election result? I think maybe it's OK to just let them be grey; do we really want to overload the Wiki server handling even longer switch statements? -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 17:52, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Hmmm, according to the Equality Party article, "The Unity Party merged with the Equality Party on May 7, 1990". But they ran in different ridings in 1989, so you can use the same colour for both. -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 17:56, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for adding parties to the /name page, although you'll have to also add parties to the /colour page to make sure the colour is right, and the /list_of_parties page so that people know that it's now an option. Regarding the two parties, if they never ran in the same ridings, it's probably okay to give them the same colour. Regarding the obscure parties, we've been adding parties pretty much as we needed them, so which parties are in the list depends on what articles we were editing at the time. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:42, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Speedy nominations of party colours subtemplates

After seeing that you played a role in creating these I'm doubting my purpose for coming here, which was to inquire about the speedy deletion tags on the party colour subtemplates. They look like they're being used as part of the demonstration here, and from what I can tell the values for them aren't entered into the the main subtemplate. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 17:45, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Templates may be deleted as if they were unused if they are only being used on sandboxes, example pages, and prototype pages (like the one you linked). Most of the templates that I've nominated for deletion have a specific entry in the /colour subtemplate. The only ones I see that do not have an entry are independent-affiliated parties (like Independent PC or Independent Labour). The current consensus is to use the self-declared name for those people's parties, but the independent colour, which the new template will do by assigning the independent colour to any unknown input. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 17:56, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Makes sense; just wanted to make sure it wasn't an active demonstration by somebody else being kiboshed out of the blue. - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 18:03, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

I made an attempt to create a version of these templates that uses the extra parameter, using only switch statements rather than subdirectories. See User:P.T. Aufrette/Sandbox4 for a comparison.

These could be used alongside the existing version, temporarily: just wrap a switch statement around the source code for Canadian election result and the other templates, and if the "party name" is |CA|AB|BC|MB|NB|NF|NL|NS|NT|NU|ON|PE|QC|SK|YK|YT then call the new version, otherwise |#default is to call the old version.

Then a bot could just change all the calls, the rule would be: look for the jurisdiction in the line, and for any Canadian election result line underneath it, if the party name starts with "jurisdiction + space", then remove that prefix; otherwise, leave the party name alone. I could probably write such a bot, although I'd run it with manual confirmation for all changes rather than fully automated.

This wouldn't preclude a later reimplementation using subdirectories; at that point, it would simply be an internal implementation detail without impact on the calling pages. -- P.T. Aufrette (talk) 17:02, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for the long absence. I like the plan to keep everything on one page with a switch statement for each province. What problem did you have at the line with the Ontario Socialist party? What are the triple slashes at the beginning of the template? In all my time making templates, I've never used those before. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 22:00, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited List of Prime Ministers of Canada, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Third party (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). I need some advice

Since July 1, three different accounts have made edits at List of Leaders of the Official Opposition (Canada) that replace the ending dates for the last few former Opposition Leaders. The first, User:Hitchfan22, did so once using two edits, and I reverted simply saying the edit was wrong. Then User:Fielding44 made the exact same two edits. I reverted with a link to the source for the dates we use there. I also left a note at the user's talk page explaining that we have an official source, that there is a legal reason why the term of one Leader only begins on the day after his or her predecessor, and that the editor should contribute at the talk page if he or she had some basis for changing the date. Two days later, the editor made the same edits again, so I issued a uw-disruptive1. Twelve hours later, an IP editor (User:67.193.199.96) made one of the two edits the other editors had made (the one changing Dion and Ignatieff's end dates, but not the one changing Turmel's).

My suspicion is that all three editors are in fact one person, but I'm not sure whether the proper route is SPA, AN/I for the disruptive editing, or requesting semi-protection since this would presumably would have stopped all the edits. What should I do? -Rrius (talk) 23:40, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

I've been away at Wikimania 2012 followed by a small vacation, so I wasn't able to help. Your dates match the citation and the federal Interpretation Act, so I do agree that it should be left as-is, and I'll keep an eye on the page from now on. When I deal with someone who refuses to go to leave comments or reply on talk page, I'll give them the user warning templates from levels 1-4 and then give them increasingly longer blocks. If I suspect someone of sockpuppeting, I'll give them the sockpuppet warning template and jump from level 1 warnings to level 4 warnings for their disruption. I try to avoid semi-protecting the article if possible. Blocking an account will stop that account's IP from registering new accounts for a while, so the article only needs to be semi-protected when their are multiple edits per day each coming from different IPs. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 23:05, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Good day

Good day, I first wanted to let you know of a possible cooperation with the Google's Endangered Languages Project since I'll be discussing with one of their representative on Friday (and you added your name on the Canadian Aboriginal Languages Coordination group). So if you have any input you'd like to give me, please do so.

Secondly, I've just learned you are from Edmonton. In October, there will be the Congres annuel de la francophonie albertaine (the Annual Alberta French Reunion if you want), in Edmonton (in the Shaw Centre), and I'll be having a kiosk on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Canada and would like to know if you want to participate. I don't know much about endangered languages right now. I think it's important, but I will have to learn more about the topic before I can contribute much. I'd be happy to help with the kiosk, Benoit was telling me about that. I also plan to invite the frequent editors in Edmonton to a meeting to see if there is enough interest to ever run an event in the city, like a photo contest for example; I'll let you know when I have a date for that. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 05:41, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Dear sir, I said I am new to wikipedia, In the sense, I do not know how to handle excessive agenda driven vandalism by the users secret of success and vensatry.

An administrator and arbitration committe's interference must be needed in this disputed article.

I t is unfortuante that such vandalism of replacing old content with new content on an article is carried out.

I request your kindself to replace the content emailed to u and protect the article with full protection status for some time.

Sincerely

I look forward for your correspondence. Arjunsingar (talk) 14:38, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

You did not tell me what page you are talking about, but I assume you mean Cinema of Andhra Pradesh. That page is only semi-protected, so any user who has made 100 edits can update it. If you have not made enough edits, you can request that someone make the change for you. I don't know anything about the topic, so I'm not a good person to ask. You can ask someone at the article's talk page at Talk:Cinema of Andhra Pradesh or one of the article's Wikiprojects at Wikiproject India or Wikiproject Film. If the page is being vandalized, you should report it to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. I hope these links help. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 18:56, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
I did the necessary changes, however your intervention is required, when u notice changes in that article and reversion of constructive edits.
I request your kind self to keep this article on ur watch list and revert the changes and deletions of conctrutive edits by other users.
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Arjunsingar (talkcontribs) 9:10, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
since u are administrator, I only request your kind help and intervention in retaining my constructive contributions on Cinema of Andhra Pradesh article, if any user reverts it.
Sincerely

Respected sir,
I have included the suggested content in the Cinema of Andhra Pradesh, I request your kind self to revert the content contributed by me, if any user vandalises the page with old content from 2009 and 2010.
Sincerely

If there is blatant vandalism, can you please give me a link to the edit where it happened? Click the "history" tab at the top of the page to see old versions. All I see is a content dispute, not vandalism. Administrators do not settle these kinds of disputes. Before I block anyone, you have to try to reach a consensus on the article's talk page or the wikiproject page. So far you have not made any comments on the talk page to explain your point, you have only emailed me to ask me to revert on your behalf. That is not how Wikipedia works. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 19:04, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
you are correct, it is exactly the content dispute, (As I said I am a bit new to wikipedia, I did not knew the technical terminology)
If I put, my issue, over the cinema of Andhra Pradesh article's talk page, the other users, are influencing the admninistrators with their experience and wikipedia contacts, which I am unable to do.
The main problem in that article is, constructive content with (neutral point of view and informative references), are being reverted by the two users (secret of success and vensatry), by simply accusing who ever edits the page as sock puppets. (suspected sock puppets who are not detected by check users, are also being unfortunately blocked by this agenda driven vandalism and influencing the administartors, to do so)
This is very unfortunate.
My only request to you is, since any one can contribute constructive content, with published sources,
my request to you is, in future, if the above users revert my content, i request your intervension to check whether the content is suppported with published sources and then do the needful (whether to revert back to my edits or support their edits, is your take as an administrator)
but i think, you have all the authority to retain constructive edits, when the above two users try to vandalise the page by replacing older content.
I think a Full protection of the article for some time, may resolve this issue.
sincerely
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Arjunsingar (talkcontribs) 8:57, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
It looks like the edits you made on the 16th survived, so hopefully this problem is over. If your edits are reverted again, you have to try to resolve the issue on the talk page. I can only use administrator powers if someone is violating consensus. If there is no consensus, I have no more power than any other editor. If you reach a consensus on the talk page and someone reverts your edits afterwords, then I can help. Don't worry about other editors having contacts on Wikipedia, because talk page discussions are not a vote. If you think they are trying to do something devious on the talk page discussion, let me know.
By the way, you can reply directly on this page rather than emailing me. I will get an alert when you reply here. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 01:12, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

I contacted you as administrator since Mkativerata wrote he is retired. He has visited Wiki [1], but with little activity. Mkativerata deleted 3 September 2010 Controversies surrounding Royal Dutch Shell that is the main article in the Category:Royal Dutch Shell controversies. Having own category proves that there could be plenty of data to this own article. Or maybe it has another name? I have not seen this deleted article and do not know its history. In my opinion Controversies surrounding Royal Dutch Shell deserves place in Wiki. Could you show me the deleted version with its history and discussion page in: User:Watti Renew/Shell. I noticed this deletion based on news of Climate activists target Shell with ice protest over Arctic drilling, Climate Justice Collective builds a pyramid of ice at Shell's London HQ and demands an end to Alaska oil exploration Guardian 11 September 2012. If the article is useful, how can I get it returned? As starting point the present state of the article is not a valid criteria for deletion, is it? Watti Renew (talk) 15:36, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

According to this page, the article was deleted because (1) it contained copyright violations and (2) it was a one-sided attack. As far as I can tell, it is a valid topic for an article, and the category you linked does need a main article. I don't want to re-create it because of the copyright issues, but you should feel free to re-create it, as long as your are careful to not copy text from anywhere, and to write it from a neutral point of view. I recommend that you create the article as a subpage of your userpage, and when you are ready for it to go live, ask someone to review it to make sure it is acceptable. The old article was mostly one-paragraph summaries of the other articles in the category (plus Template:Main to link them together), so it shouldn't be too difficult to re-create. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 23:18, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Can I have the old article in my subpages? I could also check if the history includes relevant info. Watti Renew (talk) 10:34, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
Look Arctic Gnome, I found an older copy of this page. In my opinion it would be very useful and many people have made a lot of work on it. Therefore, it deserves in my opinion place in Wikipedia as the older version. In my opinion the deletion has not been neutral. I shall not delete the old version. I want it back! How to proceed? Watti Renew (talk) 15:30, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Article deserves place, since:
1) Reasons 1) copyright violations and 2) one-sided attack do not demand deletion. They should be fixed by other means.
2) Content is extensive and important
3) An article that includes the critics of the company is by its nature inevitably critical and it must be accepted.
4) Article has been in Wiki for months or years. I have a copy from the year 2009.
5) It may have dozens of editor.
6) Deletion is not neutral
I link this on page: Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion Watti Renew (talk) 16:48, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi,

I've recently noticed that you marked the wiki page Ideaca in the Wikiproject Canada. Currently this article is AfD under the implications of tone and notability. I would very much like to save this article from deletion, and have ushered a good-faith search for appropriate references. Since you seem to believe in this article as well, would you be able to shoot over some pointers for this article to avoid deletion?

Thanks

I kept it only because I didn't understand why it was being removed. The Cinema of Andhra Pradesh (also known as Telugu cinema) is a part of Indian cinema based in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu language film industry, being the second largest film industry in India, in terms of market capitalization and infrastructure, holds a memorandum of understanding with Motion Picture Association of America to combat video piracy.[1][2][3]

As per the CBFC report of 2011, the industry stood second in India, in terms of films produced yearly.[4] The industry holds the Guinness World Record for the largest film production facility in the world.[5] The Film and Television Institute of Andhra Pradesh, Ramanaidu Film School and Annapurna International School of Film and Media are some of the largest film schools of India.[6][7]

The Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of commerce has decided to crack down on dubbed films in the state. The Chamber has passed a few resolutions and the most important among them is the ban on dubbed films during festivals. Another key resolution is the increase in surcharge from 20% to 50% on dubbed films and eradicating piracy. [8][9][10]

Industry

Moola Narayana Swamy and B. N. Reddy founded Vijaya Vauhini Studios in 1948 based in Chennai.[11] Indian film doyen, L. V. Prasad who started his film career with Bhakta Prahlada has founded Prasad Studios in 1956 based in Chennai.[12] However, through the efforts of D. V. S. Raju, the Telugu film industry has completely shifted its base from Chennai to Hyderabad in the early 1990s, during N. T. Rama Rao's political realm.[13]

Veteran actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao was the first person to come to Hyderabad and build a studio, which he named Annapurna Studios. The Telugu film industry is one of the three largest film producers in India. About 245 Telugu films were produced in 2006, the highest in India for that year. Film producing studios in Andhra Pradesh, developed by D. Ramanaidu and Ramoji Rao are involved in prolific film production and employment.[14]

There is a fair amount of dispersion among the Indian film industries. Many successful Telugu films have been remade by the Hindi and Tamil film industries. The industry also remakes a few Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam movies. [15] The Prasads IMAX theatre in Hyderabad is one of the biggest IMAX 3D screens in the world.[16] The digital cinema network company UFO Moviez marketed by southern digital screenz India, has digitized several movie theater's in the state of Andhra Pradesh.[17]

History

Early development: 1912–1930

The Telugu film industry originated with silent films in 1912, with the production and release of Bhisma Pratighna in 1921 [18] The film was directed by Raghupathi Venkaiah Naidu and his son R. S. Prakash.[19]

The two, along with Yaragudipati Varada Rao, would go on to produce and direct dozens of films throughout the decade, casting theater actors in major roles.[20] They established a long-lasting precedent of focusing exclusively on religious themes; Nandanar, Gajendra Moksham and Matsyavatar three of their most noted productions, centered on religious figures, parables, and morals.[21]

Rise of the talkie: 1931–1947

File:Tyagayya 1946.JPG
Promotional poster of Tyagayya directed by Chittor V. Nagaiah, one of the first multilingual film actor, singer, music composer, producer and director's in India. He was also known as Paul Muni of India in the media.[23][24]

On September 15, 1931, the first Telugu film with audible dialogue, Bhakta Prahlada, was produced by H.M. Reddy. Hence, every year, Telugu Cinema Day is observed on September 15, commemorating its release.[25][26] Popularly known as talkies, films with sound quickly grew in number and popularity. In 1934, the industry saw its first major commercial success with Lavakusa. Directed by C. Pullaiah and starring Parupalli Subbarao and Sriranjani in lead roles, the film attracted unprecedented numbers of viewers to theaters and thrust the young film industry into mainstream culture.[27]

By 1936, the mass appeal of film allowed directors to move away from religious and mythological themes.[27] That year, under the direction of Krithiventi Nageswara Rao, Prema Vijayam, a film focusing on social issues, was released. Its success prompted the production of dozens of other immensely successful 'social films', notably 1939's Vandemataram and Maala Pilla. Touching on societal problems like the status of Untouchables and the practice of giving dowry, Telugu films increasingly focused on contemporary living: 29 of the 96 films released between 1937 and 1947 had social themes.[28]

The outbreak of World War II and the subsequent resource scarcity caused the British Raj to impose a limit on the use of filmstrip in 1943 to 11,000 feet,[29] a sharp reduction from the 20,000 feet that had been common till then.[30] As a result, the number of films produced during the war was substantially lower than in previous years. Nonetheless, before the ban, an important shift occurred in the industry: independent studios formed, actors and actresses were signed to contracts limiting who they could work for, and films moved from social themes to folklore legends.[31]

Commercial stance and distribution

There is a market driven tradition of narrating mythology, history, fairy tales, song and dance, action sequences, large than life characterization of actor in a lead role. [32] The industry is a commercially consistent film industry,[33][34] and had its influence over commercial cinema in India. [35]

As one of the revenue generating film industries of India, Telugu film production accounts for one percent of the gross domestic product of Andhra Pradesh.[36][34] [37] Pokiri has been remade in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada in a span of 2 years owing to the film's commercial success, the film was screened at the IIFA film festival held in Dubai in 2006.[38]

Dookudu had one of the largest worldwide opening for a Telugu film, releasing globally in 1,600 screens,[39] including 71 screens in Hyderabad, India.[40] The film became the first Telugu project to release in Botswana and was opened in a single screen with one show by the Telugu Association of Botswana.[41] Dookudu was released over 79 theaters in the United States, Los Angeles Times quoted 'Dookudu' as "the biggest hit you've never heard of."[42]

Further, it was released in Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Dubai and Finland, the first for a Telugu film, and in regular overseas markets like Singapore, Malaysia and UK[43] The producers of the film approached the high court for a John Doe order to prevent piracy of the film.[44] The film set a box office record for the Telugu film industry by collecting a gross of more than 1 billion.[45][46][47]

Critical reception

The industry is one of the largest producers of folklore, historical, fantasy and mythological films.[48][49][50] Kadri Venkata Reddy and B. Vittalacharya were pioneers of this genre.[51][52][53] Donga Ramudu directed by K. V. Reddy was archived in the curriculum of the Film and Television Institute of India,[54] Mayabazar and Patala Bhairavi which got critical acclaim at the first International Film Festival of India in 1952,[55] remained as enduring classics of Indian cinema.[56] Nartanasala has won the best art direction award at the Afro Asian film festival in Jakarta.[57]

Seeta Kalyanam got critical acclaim at the BFI London Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival [58] Swati Mutyam was the only Telugu film to be sent by India as its official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1986.[33][59][60] Swati Mutyam and Sagara Sangamam got critical acclaim at Asia Pacific Film Festival.[61][62] Oka Oori Katha has won special awards at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and Carthage Film Festival.[63][64]

Sankarabharanam won the Prize of the Public at the Besancon Film Festival of France in the year 1981.[65] Thilaadanam has won the New Currents Award at the 7th Busan International Film Festival of South Korea.[66] B. Narsing Rao's Daasi and Matti Manushulu have won Diploma of Merit award at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1989 and 1991 respectively. Maa Ooru directed by him won the Media Wave Award at the Hungary International festival of visual arts.[67]

Cast and crew

Chittor V. Nagaiah was one of the most influential actors of South Indian cinema.[23] S. V. Ranga Rao is one of the first Indian actors at that time to receive an award at the Indonesian Film Festival, held in Jakarta for the film Narthanasala in 1963.[68] Chiranjeevi established himself to be one of the most commercially successful Telugu actors during the 1990s.[69]

K. N. T. Sastry, has garnered international recognition for his pioneering work in Telugu Parallel Cinema[70] Akkineni Kutumba Rao's Patha Nagaramlo Pasivadu has received Cairo International Film Festival's, Merit Certificate for best feature.[71][72] Dasari Narayana Rao has directed Meghasandesam, which got critical acclaim at Cannes and Moscow Film Festival[73]

Rajnesh Domalpalli is a Telugu film director whose first directorial Telugu venture, Vanaja, won several international awards including the first prize in the live-action feature film category at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival.[74] S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is a multilingual playback singer from Telugu film industry, to have won National Film Awards across four languages. He holds the record of having recorded the most number of songs for any male playback singer and has received twenty five Nandi Awards from the State Government.[75]

Hyderabad International Convention Center[76] has been the Hyderabad home for Filmfare Awards South from 2007[77][78]

Other Guinness Records

 • Movie producer D.Rama Naidu holds the Guinness World Record as the most prolific producer with 130 films.[79]

VisualEditor for templates

Hey Arctic.gnome

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:24, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
