Hyphenator

When I execute Hyphenator "Watch this page" in the wiki edit page is checked by default. So every page possessed with Hyphenator is on watch. I don't like that. Please deactivate the option. Thanks. Grimes2 (talk) 12:26, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

@Grimes2 Unfortunately, because hyphenator sends you back to Wikipedia to save the edit, the only options I have are "always watch the page" and "never watch the page and remove the page from your watchlist if it is already watched". I think editors are more likely to be confused by a page being unexpectedly removed from their watchlist than one unexpectedly being added, so I chose the less worse option. Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Hyphenator fails

With articles like Herzog & de Meuron or Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Hyphenator fails (because of characters "+" and "&"). Grimes2 (talk) 08:37, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

@Grimes2 Fixed. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 13:59, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Request for unblock

Dear admin AntiCompositeNumber, Although I have been working on Wikipedia, Wikimedia and Wikidata (English and Persian) for a short time, but I have always tried to obey the rules. This is clear from the edits and articles I have created. Recently my Wikimedia account has been blocked. Of course, it was a mistake on my part because my newcomer wife unknowingly removed the labels and I was unaware of this. I have always worked for the development of Wikipedia sports. Please accept my apology and activate my account. Sincerely MMA Kid (talk) 06:27, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

@MMA Kid Sorry, but it's a Checkuser block, so you'll have to contact one of the Commons Checkusers for assistance. The best way would be to email the blocking administrator, User:Elcobbola. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:14, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Nothwitstanding previous demonstration that MMA Kid is untruthful, if JRM2018 is your "newcomer wife," one wonders why their description of themselves included:
  • "he continued to accept"
  • "he still completed"
  • "he started competing in 2007"
  • "he won the Okinawa open karate championships"
  • "he won the adult middle weight division"
  • "he also won the black belt middle division"
  • "he defeated Yamaguchi Shota"
  • Junior Robert McInnes is the Son of the founder of Shorin Kempo Kaikan Kancho Sifu McInnes 8 th Dan"
From the last, the username JRM2018 is thus understood to be Junior Robert McInnes--a man's name. WP:LITTLEBROTHER. Эlcobbola talk 19:27, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Dear User:Elcobbola, In 2018, my wife created an account to create Wikipedia for Junior Robert McInnes. At the time, she thought the name of the article holder and the name of the account holder should be the same. Please look at the contributions. User:JRM2018 has not much activity since 2018 until 2021. Honestly, User:MMA Kid is real and works separately. The goals of this account are mentioned in the user page. I am in Wikipedia every day and write articles in different languages. Please kindly and unblock my account. Sincerely MMA Kid (talk) 11:36, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

RfA 2021 review update

Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.

The following had consensus support of participating editors:

  1. Corrosive RfA atmosphere
The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
  2. Level of scrutiny
Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
  3. Standards needed to pass keep rising
It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
  4. Too few candidates
There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
  5. "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins

The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:

  1. Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere.
  2. Admin permissions and unbundling
There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas.
  3. RfA should not be the only road to adminship
Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.

Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.

There are 2 future mailings planned. One when Phase 2 opens and one with the results of Phase 2. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

RfA Reform 2021 Phase 2 has begun

Following a 2 week brainstorming period and a 1 week proposal period, the 30 day discussion of changes to our Request for Adminship process has begun. Following feedback on Phase 1, in order to ensure that the largest number of people possible can see all proposals, new proposals will only be accepted for the for the first 7 days of Phase 2. The 30 day discussion is scheduled to last until November 30. Please join the discussion or even submit your own proposal.

There is 1 future mailing planned with the results of Phase 2. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

shadows.py

Hi, Trying the program out on Toolforge. Awesome you found a solution, I don't understand it, but a couple mins wow, more than fast enough. Here is the error:

tools.botwikiawk@tools-sgebastion-07:~/shadows$ ./shadows.py
  File "./shadows.py", line 33
    name: str
        ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

The file is /data/project/botwikiawk/shadows/shadows.py - looks like a python version problem but it's python3 -- GreenC 00:33, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

@GreenC That's a python 3.6+ type annotation, so it doesn't work with python 3.5. I also had some other dependencies that you'dve needed to install. https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P17710 should work fine on the grid without installing anything else. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
It lives! Just tagged 25. Now I am curious why it's only 25, since it last ran in May. Maybe there is another process running somewhere. For now will just run it and see if anyone reports a problem. -- GreenC 02:25, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Bots Newsletter, December 2021

Bots Newsletter, December 2021
BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.

Overall

  • Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these, Green checkmarkY 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful (Dark red X symbolN2 3 denied, Blue question mark? 3 withdrawn, and Expired 2 expired).

September 2019

Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
  • Green checkmarkY Monkbot 16, DannyS712 bot 60, Ahechtbot 6, PearBOT 3, Qbugbot 3 · Dark red X symbolN2 DannyS712 bot 5, PkbwcgsBot 24 · Blue question mark? DannyS712 bot 61, TheSandBot 4
  • TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
  • Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.

October 2019

November 2019

Now you're thinking with portals.

December 2019

In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:
What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?

  • What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
  • What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
  • Will reFill ever get fixed?
  • What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
  • Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!
