Thanks for Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/1pixel prompt handling. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 01:49, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello

Hello, I have seen your username around quite a bit and the community seems to respect your opinion. I was wondering if you could do me a favor and check the debate on my alleged sockpuppetry. I am really trying to understand the lynchmob logic. The debate is here. Here is what happened. I created Bowie State University, Department of Public Safety a month or so ago. User:Lord Pistachio placed an AfD tag on it. The article went into debate. As I am typing my case on my MDT (computer), my partner (in the Police Department that I work for) asked what I was typing so intently. I told him the whole story. He wanted to comment on it. Now, a few weeks ago, I helped him create a user account so maybe he would take interest in Wikipedia. His interest was marginal at best and didn't do anything with the account since then. When I told him about my AfD he seemed to get interested. I knew at the time that his input wouldn't really help my AfD, but I thought that if it got him excited about wikipedia, it was worth losing a minor article that I had written. Sock (or meat) puppetry didn't even cross my mind at the time. I can understand how it would seem as though it is a sockpuppet, but if you look at my record and my contributions, I don't think I even fit the puppeteer "profile." And if you look at the alleged "sockpuppet," if I did create it as such, I didn't even try to hide the fact that it was a sockpuppet. I'm sorry about the soapbox rant...this is just so annoying. I appreciate your time and input. Thanks! (Tapadh leibh! is that right?) Sallicio (talk) 02:50, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Sallicio

From seeing edit summarys on some pages I watch, I noticed that you reverted and blocked the above mentioned user. Thing is, looking at his edit history, the contributions seem fine - just some appropriate looking ref formating. I can't see the reason for reverting, much less banning?! Maybe I can't see it, but it seems puzzling... AdamSmithee (talk) 09:41, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

He was blocked for "abusing sock puppet accounts". Unless I'm very much mistaken, he was a sockpuppet of a banned user which was revealed by checkuser. — DarkFalls talk 09:55, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Anyway, it looked strange as the edits were fine... AdamSmithee (talk) 13:25, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

And another one. Your rangeblock seems to be ineffective, or the rangeblocks Yamla applied got him (given as the blocks were only for 31 hours). -Jéské (Blah v^_^v) 09:55, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

School vandalism

I noticed that you're more knowledgeable on school vandalism procedure than most admins, so I wonder if you'd have a look at these when you've got a moment -

168.8.125.3 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) School - 100% vandalism over the last 50 edits

165.155.208.84 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) School - Vandalism only IP

User:KaylaLanders exhibits the same bad grammar and editing patterns as User:House1090. [1], [2] He may also be reverting himself through other socks, but I'm not sure on this: [3] I would take this to another admin, but I think this requires a checkuser. The citations are quality, from good sources to boot. If you read them you will see it for yourself that the premise is clearly valid.

That user has clearly not read the references.

Thank you.

Sockpuppets of Ericsaindon2?

The following IP addresses keep making identical POV edits that always get reverted: 75.43.220.123, 75.47.167.76, 75.47.185.55, and others. I am wondering if they are sockpuppets of User:Ericsaindon2, a banned user. They are usually posted to Huntington Beach, California and Orange County, California. It that something you can determine using checkuser? Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 06:33, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

It is, but you'll need a lot more evidence first, before a case can be taken - Alison 08:27, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
What steps do I need to take? This editor posted the identical entries again about 15 minutes ago, but under a different IP. Any guidance in the process would be appreciated. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 01:09, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
Wow, you are fast! Thank you so much for your help. Alanraywiki (talk) 01:19, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
(ec - no problem :) ) The IP address is in the same range as he always uses and locates to the same area. I've gone ahead and semi-protected both articles for two weeks. If he persists, you could ask an admin to rangeblock his IP range to prevent him from warring like this. There's not a lot really that checkuser can do in this case, though, sorry - Alison 01:21, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Back again

Hey there. It looks like we've got a new drawer of DavidYork socks popping up; would it be appropriate to point out a few to you and see what turns up, or better to sort out a formal RFCU? The socks are doing their usual reverts on some of his favourite targets; they include YourGoodMaster (talk · contribs) and ThePorchMonkeysOfHirohito (talk · contribs), as the two most recent. Let me know if you'd prefer a formal report. Thanks! Tony Fox (arf!) 16:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tony. Given that it's DavidYork71 again, could you possibly add these to the existing RFCU case page over yonder and I'll get to them immediately? It's important that we track that guy to make it easier for the next checkuser, which will inevitably be around again. Just mark it for my attention :) - Alison 00:20, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

...Yeah, I suspected that was what was going to happen, but I wanted to at least make a pro forma request to see if that would clear Jhurlbut and make sure they weren't QuackGuru.

Thanks for calling it like you see it. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 23:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about that. It's the "fishing" and the "can't-prove-innocence" thing - Alison 23:58, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Nothing to be sorry about. You did the right thing per CU policy. I was trying to bend it a bit in their favor on the prove innocence thing, and then bend it a bit to fish on Quack, and I knew it. I figured it might not be too far of a bend, but I knew it might well be.
I wanted to let you know here that I understand, and don't disagree with your reasoning. I could justify to myself asking for a little bend, but I can't find any fault at all in your turning it down.
Have a good day and weekend! Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 00:06, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Media:User_Triona_self.jpg, I'm not sure if I want to have it zapped yet, the RTV issue was a vandal getting my AIM from my userpage, which made me reconsider having comprehensive contact information there. Checkuser on waterboarding RFAR

Thatcher suggested I follow up with a couple of Checkusers directly. If you look here here, on this RFAR case I had put up a motion for a proper RFCU here. It's based on accumulated evidence here on the Evidence page that one or more users involved are the long-banned User:BryanFromPalatine. Thatcher has also weighed on on that Proposed Decision talk page, in the section directly above the one I linked. The evidence is based on a combination of IPs, geolocation (all the users appear to be within 5-15 miles of BryanFromPalatine's known location of Palatine, IL), behavior, and language. Any review would be appreciated. I apologize for the amount of evidence, but it was a complex one. Lawrence § t/e 18:01, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

This is what I emailed you about previously, Ali :) The top two socks from the Proposed section (Samurai Commuter and Neutral Good) were the ones I highly considered to be sock/meat puppets of the banned user.. How to contest the blocking of my IP address?

Hello - I'm a Wikipedia user and occasional editor of several years' cheerful and happy standing, but somehow about 6 months ago my IP address ran afoul of some administrator and I started getting "Your IP address is blocked" messages after the most innocuous attempts at correction. I just don't have the stamina to follow all the twists and turns to figure out this business of blocking and how one properly protests it. Anyway, I saw your name attached to the most recent "You're blocked" notice and your talk page looks friendly ... so here I am. Can you explain, how did this happen to my address? Is there a plain English explanation? Who is the malefactor who's befouling whole swaths of IP address such that mine is considered suspect? I realize I can, of course, log in as myself (Rousse) and carry on making corrections as I've always done, but I would prefer to know what has happened and whether anything can be fixed. It really seems like a ridiculous situation from my narrow little window on the workings of the mighty Wikipedia. (Or could this possibly be my comeuppance for having dared enter into the edit wars about those lovely and oh-so-wise representatives of the American political mind-set, Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham? I got several angry reactions on my talk page about the latter a year or so ago ... sometimes I wonder about the mental stability - or the superior technical knowhow, more to the point - of the people I tangled with. But this is probably liberal paranoia; I've mostly stayed away from controversial figures' pages of late.)

Anyway, I'd appreciate a real person's assistance in straightening this out, or in pointing me to someone else who has the time for it. Sincere thanks, in advance - Rousse (talk) 17:25, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

P.S. To above: Here's my IP address: 76.203.127.234. Go raibh maith agat (thanks), Rousse (talk) 17:29, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Rousse. Sorry about the delay in replying. Unfortunately, due to severe abuse from a wide range of IP addresses on your network, we have had to disable anonymous editing as well as prevent creation of accounts. This is no reflection upon yourself, but is a wider issue. There's not much we can do about it as the abuse is of a serious nature. As you can see, this shouldn't affect your editing as you have an account and are free to log in, though. Right now, there are over 32,000 IP addresses blocked and yours is just one of them. I'm really sorry about the inconvenience it causes, but there's not much can be done right now. Thanks for the editing you've been doing over the years! - Alison 16:06, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks very much, Alison, for your excellent reply. Why anyone would want to vandalize Wikipedia is beyond me. A little anonymity - in some hands - is a dangerous thing, I guess. Rousse (talk) 00:42, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Before I launch WW3, could you please look into this and make sure that if simply Emo is typed it goes to the dab page and not to the most insignificant article of the name. I think moving a page back requires some of your Admin mojo. I've only got my slash-hook - but I'm primed and ready to use it. Sarah777 (talk) 01:11, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

User:ZmaGhurnStaKona

Sorry to bother you Alison, but I noticed that you just responded to a user-check request by ZmaGhurnStaKona, have you checked this user's own contributions? He appears to be an abusive throw-away account with only a few edits, engaged in slander and vandalism. For example, he's added stuff like "Iranians love gay sex" and "homosexual Westerners and homosexual Europeans" to several articles.[7][8]. I am pretty sure that he is a sock.--07fan (talk) 07:15, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Oh, that's Nisarkand. I'll check now. Both Nisarkand and Beh-nam/Tajik are constantly filing checkusers against each other. In their case, I usually checkuser the filing editor if the account is new. Gah! Snocrates/Zoporific

These two accounts claim to be roommates. Z is blocked, and S is caught in the autoblock. How do we resolve this? I've asked East718, the blocking admin, to undo the block at least temporarily so we can all have a pow wow. What do you think? We have to do something about this roommate deal because it's a monkey wrench in the checkuser works, but it's also a convenient excuse for any user who wants to double their fun. Jehochman Talk 00:26, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

I think the substantive issue needs to be discussed, certainly, and I'll bring it up with the other checkusers and possibly with ArbCom. In the meantime, I've lifted the autoblock on the IP address (at least I hope I have!) - Alison 09:31, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

but why do you keep reverting my edit? the request put there is inapropriate as the editor is accusing anyone who edits the article Geordie as being a sock, however he has been blocked for edit warring as he refused to listen to my dicussion on Talk:Geordie. Zogonthetyne (talk) 19:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Ali. you reckon it is polite to refuse to reply at all to my request for Administrative assistance? Things are escalating a bit and some drone is threatening me (again). Sarah777 (talk) 23:31, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Sarah, sorry for not getting back to you. I got swamped with the whole Lauder case thing. Either way, you should probably back off on the Emo (disambiguation) thing, because you're edit-warring against (apparent) consensus at this stage and are heading towards blocksville again. What you really need to do is bring it to the talk page of the emo article and/or take the whole issue to Wikipedia:Move requests. If you need a hand, just give me a shout - Alison 00:17, 16 February 2008 (UTC) (PS: moving your Emo images to Commons ;) )
Hmmm. Well, I still think the status quo should be restored before the debate begins; possession is 9/10ths etc - nowhere more so than on Wiki. And I don't do 3RR; all my previous blocks were gross breaches of Admin power in support of their POV (or Admin innumeracy in one case). Now if you want to help, take a look at the photo I added to Commons and then tried to add to Newport, County Tipperary. As you can see it has verticality issues. Yet I up loaded it upright. I just know you can fix it. XXX and sorry for being cross but it's been a rough day on the road! Sarah777 (talk) 00:39, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
' Déanta' - that was kinda weird. Anyways - fixed and re-balanced, too. As for the 'status quo', revert-warring and then debating is a non-starter. Others are seeing it as edit-warring while you are calling it "restoring". Better off talking before changing right now - Alison 01:37, 16 February 2008 (UTC) (yeah, I know :) I should know what you're like by now!)

sockpuppetry

Although checkuser has confirmed that the following users are sockpuppets of banned User:NisarKand:

Both accounts are still not banned. These accounts were created in July 2007, 4 months after NisarKand was banned, and have been used to not only evade the ban, but also to edit articles that are semi-protected against IP/New user-vandalism. Here is a list of confirmed sockpuppets of NisarKand, some of them having racist names for the sole purpose to insult certain ethnic and religious groups. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.83.140.191 (talk) 12:29, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

The above statement was posted by the controversial banned editor User:Tajik. His actions indicate that of a teen, his IP should be blocked and his message ignored because these sockpuppets are not used in distruptive activities. Besides, NisarKand is an honest person who revealed himself to admin Alison for help in unblocking his primary account name due to excessive punishment and unlawful block.--Ghulam Farook (talk) 22:14, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Because Appletrees slanders Japan, a lot of users dislike him. For instance, he tried to apply racist's tag to a famous philosopher Fukuzawa Yukichi in Japan. [9] Moreover, he made the category of "Category:Anti-Chinese sentiment in Japan" and "Category:Anti-Korean sentiment in Japan". He only shouted, "You are SOCKS" though a lot of users advised to his attitude.

Withdrawing the Universe from Core Contest

Hey Alison,

I don't think our paths have crossed much, but I know that we share a wonderful common friend in Fvasconcellos. :) I hope that the New Year's being good to you! :) I'm sorry to bother you, but I had something earnest to Talk about and I'm sure that you'll be kind enough to Listen.

The promotion of VanTucky's article on Domestic sheep to Featured Article set me thinking again about the Core Contest, which a lot of us participated in, back when November was crossing over into December last year? It's been about two months, and there's been no decision, so I'm guessing that it must be very hard to decide between so many good articles?

So I was looking at all my shelves of delicious canned food from my garden's harvest last year and thinking that I don't need money anyway, when some wonderfully good and hard-working Wikipedians really do need it. I participated mainly for the fun of it — and maybe a little for the vanity of it, which is scarcely a noble reason. :P So I'd like to withdraw my entry, on Universe, to make your decision easier and swifter; maybe it wasn't in the running anyway, but I'd like to do whatever lies within my little scope to help those who need it. Request for a second opinion

Hi Alison. Sorry to bother you when you are busy, but could you take a look at Talk:List of massacres#Consensus if you have a moment. There's been a lot of edit warring at the article historically, and we've managed to (more or less) restrict to a voluntary 0RR during discussion on the article talk page to agree what the article's scope should be. We have now pretty much agreed a way forward, which is to restrict the article to events which are known in Wikipedia as massacres. This solution immediately devolves any arguments about sources and what exactly constitutes a massacre away from the list article and onto the individual articles, which seems proper to me. Anyway, I am keen to move forwards but User:Sarah777 has stated at User talk:John#No consensus that she is unable to accept the consensus and requests another admin to look at it. We have spent a good long time discussing it and Sarah has made a lot of criticisms of how the article is now (which are merited) and of our proposed way forwards, but without suggesting a more constructive solution. I feel she may accept you as a neutral party. Please see what you think. Thanks in advance. --John (talk) 22:12, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

The IP is the vocal one and is uncivil as seen here and here. You have provided little or no evidence that the editor you wish to check is related to the banned editor. The checkuser process delves into an editor's privacy. We need good justification in doing this, rather than just a hunch, y'know ... - Alison 07:05, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Hi, Allie - would you mind running that check, m'darling? I've blocked the account indefinitely as a likely Hkelkar sockpuppet, but it would be nice to have confirmation. It's just that it really does fit Hkelkar's edit pattern, and Nishkid agrees. Again, if the account is confirmed as Mr Kelkar, taking the IP out of the playing field would be great, though admittedly we can't block all of Texas just to nail Hkelkar. Not that anyone would notice if we did, but anyway...Cheers, Moreschi If you've written a quality article... 09:31, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
Ummm - okay, so. If Nishkid is calling it and if he's pretty sure, then it's worth a shot. He knows Hkelkar well .... - Alison 00:39, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

The Images you deleted

The names of the Images were not a personal attack against anyone. I have been accused online in many plcaes of bieng a 45 year old investment banker names james mead who is using a picture of someone else etc. etc. etc. I have been accused of beng a "internet" fake. I named that picture to make fun of that. (note I listed one image for deletion because I uploaded it by mistake thanks for that.) I am going to upload that same image with a different name. However I would as if in the future you actually bothered to discuss something before you do things like that. Instead of flying off the handle--Hfarmer (talk) 21:47, 23 February 2008 (UTC).

Well no, Hfarmer. Per WP:RPA and per WP:CSD#G10, attacks like you just made can be removed forthwith. Feel free to upload whatever image, but do not name it to disparage a living person, especially not another editor on the project here. None of this can be remotely construed as "flying off the handle" - Alison 23:03, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
just who was I desparaging? Is the name james mead related to Andrea? If it is that's news to me. The way I heard that name was by being accused of using it to terrorize people on usenet. Any offense to Andrea was not intentional and I am sorry if I caused any. Look at this written by Sophia Sidelberg here
"This "James Mead" is we are led to understand most probably a certain student studying physics who is very inconsistent about their own personal history. And we will name names if they continue. Does this matter, well yes because we are talking about another one of "Bailey's HSTS ladyboys" (A member of his little "Harem" let's say) policing who says what and deciding to bully people who do not tow Bailey's "Truth" well yes, but if it is such a truth, why would Bailey need to resort to these increasingly surreal tactics to ensure that "truth" is accepted?"
She goes on in that blog to discuss even more disturbing things than that. Even seems to threaten my life. Really Alison you should learn to discuss things because what can seem so clear and yet not be. I won't take this as anything personal. From my dealings with you you tend to act precipitously, that's just who you are and we need people like you on the look out. Sometimes your just not in the right. --Hfarmer (talk) 23:19, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Hfarmer, Wikipedia is not the place for fights like this. I'm totally disinterested in whatever it is that's going on with Bailey, Dreger et. al. on usenet. Point is this; don't upload images with names that disparage people on here or are being disruptive in making some sort of point or other. It's not appropriate. Don't bring fights onto Wikipedia from other sites. We're trying to build an encyclopedia here - Alison 23:24, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
I just want you to tell me exactly who am I supposed to have disparaged? I simply stated in the name of that picture file for the record that I am not a faker, or somone posing online as a person named "james mead". How is defending myself an attack on someone else? I mean I don't understand where you are comming from. Your explainations ammount to saying You are an administrator and I should just shut up. I really don't think that's how things work here. --Hfarmer (talk) 23:31, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
We've already had plenty of harassment of Andrea James on this project from the "James E. Mead" nonsense.[20][21][22] - there are plenty of other examples. I don't think I need to explain the origins of the name, somehow, given that it was attached to her article on here for quite some time. Like I said, which you've not commented on, please don't bring whatever fights onto Wikipedia. We're here to build an encyclopedia - Alison 23:47, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
That's horrible. I can assure you I am not the one who did that bull crap. I in all honesty did not even realize that was going on. I simply responded to people who were calling me by that name for some reason. I mean hell if I have something to say to her I'd just say it directly she doesn't scare me. I can assure you that you are wrong about my intent. --Hfarmer (talk) 01:15, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, it's good to hear your assurances on the whole matter. You can see now how it could easily be construed as harassment given the history - Alison 02:00, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

User Page: DeKnikker

Hello, I have recieved a phone call from a very close friend of mine and told me that a false Wikipedia user page was created under his name, and whoever made it had posted rude and racial remarks on other articles, including the DeKnikker User page itself with lude remarks and other vandalism. What is more interesting about the article edits posted in the Contributions is the fact that all the edits show suspicious remarks from other people at the high school that we go to. It is his request as is mine that we find the IP address of the computer that made the false account, added inappropriate remarks, and vandalized a number of pages. Then we can proceed to article deletion. But it is his request that we pinpoint the culprit first. I would like to thank those of whom support us on this problem. Good day, -- Steven Stone (talk) 04:00, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. Well, I can certainly help you with the vandalism issues and can have it removed/deleted if needs be. Just point me in the right direction and I'll see what I can do. Unfortunately, under the privacy policy here at Wikipedia, I cannot reveal the IP addresses of editors except under strict circumstances. What your friend can do is email the OTRS group or the Wikimedia Foundation and request the IP information if he feels that the damage is severe enough. Let me know where the vandalism is first and I can deal with that straight away. Thanks - Alison 04:10, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Re: Absidy

Given you weren't involved the first time around with this (it was an SSP), check my deleted contribs for the last SSP I filed. I think there is at least one more registered and one more IP hiding out there, and I'm sure I could find more if I actually had bothered to walk it back further in time. privacy policy violation in checkuser request case LakeOswego

Please explain, if and how the Checkuser request in the sockpuppetry case LakeOswego was in accordance with WP:RFCU and the privacy policy. FeelFreeToBe (talk) 04:52, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. I'll do my best to answer your questions here. Firstly, the privacy policy governs the use of checkuser in the release of personally identifying information. In this case, no personally identifying information whatsoever was released and no connections were made between your account and any other. The critical section of the document is, "IP addresses of users, derived either from those logs or from records in the database are frequently used to correlate usernames and network addresses of edits in investigating abuse of the wiki, including the suspected use of malicious "sockpuppets" (duplicate accounts), vandalism, harassment of other users, or disruption of the wiki." In this case I explicitly refused to release any IP address or geolocating information whatsoever. Having said all that, there is the question as to whether the RFCU case was within the checkuser policy, which is an entirely different matter. In this case, it is my firm belief that yes, it was certainly within the realms of policy, and for a number of reasons. I can provide you with more detail on my rationale here if you like - Alison 05:13, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Well this is totally out of control. However, each of the SPA accounts are single accounts - Red X Unrelated - and they're from basically everywhere. They're probably coming in from some forum or other and trying to swing the vote. The closing admin will no doubt take all this into account however. You might want to point them to this comment here to show that there's not just one sockmaster here - Alison 08:06, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

The ridiculous blocks

  • Before you jump in to block me again look at this from the "British isles" name debate:
  • And Coast? Follow the link, why don't you? "Britain" is a political word - we must be careful not to enforce it (that's why 'land masses' have their own names - becasue they are neutral and constant). You seem to be enforcing the loaded use of Britain over the home nations onto other people, just so you can remove yourself from a recognised benign term that you simply don't want anyone to use. A bit selfish don't you think? And a bit crazy too - "British Isles" is clearly the technical term of use. (RE the Contents of my 2005 World Atlas: "British Isles 1:4 400 000"!)--Matt Lewis (talk) 22:11, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Now - if people think they can claim the genocidal British Occupation was "benign" can you explain why it isn't permitted to explain why this is bull on this wonderful rules-based Wiki? (naturally, the idea of pro-Anglo bias plays no part in this in the minds of our wonderful Admins).Sarah777 (talk) 22:31, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

The IP addresses may have been a stretch in a couple of cases, but at least one of them had a pejorative edit identical to one made by one of the registered accounts, and another one fixed a spelling error in that edit, so I reported them as well. In case you were wondering, I wasn't trying to fish here - there were quite a few IPs I didn't report because the edits seemed unrelated. Also, thanks for picking up User:MDoung - it was on my "uncertain" list, so I had decided not to include it. --DachannienTalkContrib 07:20, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

checkuser request case LakeOswego

Sorry to annoy you again with that. My concern was, that according to WP:RFCU, "Vote fraud where the possible sockpuppet votes do not affect the outcome of the vote" is an "unacceptable request". I did not participate in "blatant vandalism" either. Maybe there was a good reason for checkuser, as you indicate. I really don't need to know all the details, and my goal is not to cry out that some rule has been broken (if that's the case). But I need to know two things:

  • If I can trust that you handle these things with the necessary care
  • Does anybody know my IP now, and if so, who? Or does this information get deleted automatically, or never revealed at all?

Thanks for your time to answer this. FeelFreeToBe (talk) 04:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, yes, the checkuser was handled according to policy. I have seen your IP address and nobody else. Truth be known, I've forgotten it :) Point is this; per the privacy policy, I am expressly forbidden from revealing it to anyone else except under strict conditions. Yes, you can trust me to handle it with absolute care - only I have seen the address. It's in the logs, though, that a check was made, but there's no explicit link of an IP address with your username - Alison 04:34, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Wonders if it would be a kindness to get Ali a UPS of her very own, or a cruel way of keeping her Wiki-addicted :) SirFozzie (talk) 17:14, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for PP on Granville Woods. I'll hopefully be able to fix it up in a day or so. BigDunc (talk) 08:51, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Much deserved

Unblocking Sarah777

Hell no. If people are supporting unblocking an editor who colourfully said "get off my talk page you twat", with a history of, as you put it, "gross incivility", it just show how much Wikipedia has gone into the toilet. That, and I don't think she'll follow the terms of the deal anyway. Will (talk) 03:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I've heard far worse than that around here from admins that are still active. Sarah is massively frustrated right now with a lot of things on WP. Cut her a little slack here - she's a good contributor who needs to work through some stuff - Alison 03:26, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
At the very least, I think an unblock is inappropriate. Let it fizzle out. Will (talk) 03:37, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

The examples you give are of unacceptable conduct. We don't set standards by the worst things on wiki. Tyrenius (talk) 04:15, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Indeed, but let's maintain some semblance of a level playing field here. How can we censure someone when someone else is given carte blanche to do and say what they like. She's already got a problem with admins, in fairness - Alison 04:17, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
I am quite prepared to endorse any measures taken against others who act in a similar way. Wiki would be a more pleasant place for all as a result. Tyrenius (talk) 04:38, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
I suspect you won't have to wait too long, so - Alison 04:42, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. It looks as though it's overdue. Tyrenius (talk) 04:57, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Alison

Can you please check this [24]? It's kind of obvious, but a confirmation would be nice. Thanks. --07fan (talk) 23:06, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Done - I've declined so you should probably evaluate and block accordingly - Alison 23:23, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Alison, I am not an admin. But please reconsider the circumstances, this guy is evading 3RR via IPs, is evading 3RR through IPs an acceptable practice? --07fan (talk) 23:26, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
It's not an acceptable practice, no. But the privacy policy states that IP address and geolocating info should really only be released where there's a strong need (clause 5), and I really don't see us being at that threshold yet - Alison 23:31, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough, but what if he continues to evade 3RR and revert with these IPs? --07fan (talk) 23:34, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Then, we can re-evaluate the case if it gets bad enough - Alison 23:35, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps not *all* of us were fooled by AT. . .

Not to toot my own horn, but I believe I was the first to call WP:SHENANIGANS on AT. :) Ronnotel (talk) 23:48, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi!

Hi Alison. I know you are very busy and despite that do an awful lot of work here and I really respect that and appreciate it like I know most others here do as well. A perfect 10 from the Danish judge! However, when you get the time to do this would you please look at this? I have private evidence that I'm not sure what to with nor am I sure that it is really needed but as you know from experience with this guy we need to uncover as much as we can early on so we aren't stuck with a list of 100 accounts and IP's to check in one go again. This guy is known to produce 10-15 accounts in one hour on different IP's when he gets upset. Thanks and once again thank you for all your hard work that I know often carries no reward. EconomicsGuy (talk) 07:13, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Done - I'd actually been working this case from earlier on so it didn't take too long to finish up. Interesting result, too - Alison 07:38, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
