Cymensora
[edit]- Hi, @Alarichall . Thanks for your offer on W. A. R. Richardson, "The Owers" article. However, I already have a copy of the journal itself. Richardson is cited in the Cymenshore article. Check out citation reference numbers [17], [31], [39] and [52] (there maybe more!) and the reference section. When I started editing this article I found a lot of the sources quoted Hume Wallace on any literature to do with the Marine Archaeology of the area. He seems to be the only one who has done a full underwater survey of the waters around Selsey Unfortunately his findings were self published and copies of it were pretty limited. I do not believe it has been put online? However I managed to find a copy in the local library, hence why he is cited. The literature on Cymensora is very sparse possibly because it is associated with the foundation myth of Sussex? Under the External Links section there is a paper by William Pullen that asserts that Cymensora was probably named before/ during the Roman era after Commius (king of the Atrebates in Britain 51BC – 35BC). It doesn't appear to be peer reviewed but is an interesting hypothesis. Regards. Wilfridselsey (talk) 10:27, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Doh! Sorry about that! I think I did a quick search of the article for 'Journal of the English Place-Name Society', whereas the article has the title as 'English Place-Name Society Journal' (which is fair enough because the title page of the journal is, if I remember right, confusing in this regard). So I thought that the article wasn't cited when of course it was. Apologies for wasting your time! Alarichall (talk) 10:39, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- That's OK thanks for your interest. The Richardson article was fairly easy to get hold of, as were pretty much all of the references appart from, as I said, the Hume Wallace. It was difficult as his book is typewritten (probably using a typewriter not a wordprocessor even!!) so there are no soft copies of it that I know of unfortunately. Hi. If you have some time can you help out here? The article was a total train wreck and I made major revisions. The previous version had some material from Raymond Williams in it, but all jumbled up with anthropology and cultural studies was not named as a distinct approach or set of approaches. I deleted redundancies and fringe views and reorganized the rest so that distinct approaches were clear. That said, I am pretty weak on cultural studies. So I made a place in the article for it, but what I wrote could be off and is surely incomplete (my strength is in anthropology). I'd appreciate it if you could look at it soon and flesh out the differences between how anthropology and cultural studies understand and look at culture, clarify anything I muddled, and correct any mistakes. I do not think this article should replace the articles on cultural anthropology or on cultural studies, but I do think these disciplines provide important contexts for explaining different approaches to culture. Completely missing is a section on "cultural history," which I hope you know something about. Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 00:00, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks - I have done everything I could on anthropology's approach to "culture" and the article is out of balance, the thing to do is to add a strong section on cultural studies' approach to culture. I sure hope you can help. I hope this is a good holiday for you, Slrubenstein | Talk 23:39, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Nazi, Swastika References Being Purged from Syrian Social Nationalist Party
[edit]Would you mind having a look at the problem of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party's Nazi history and swastika flag being systematically deleted/vandalized? [edit]Hello Alaric. As you've probably seen, I've restored the Icelandic Constitutional Assembly election, 2010 article. We have individual articles for almost every national election and referendum held in countries, and I see no reason why this one should be any different. Of course, there are elements that should be covered in both articles and they should be strongly interlinked, but the election article should remain a standalone one. Deletion discussion about Huda Sha'arawi
[edit]Hello, Alarichall,
I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Huda Sha'arawi should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Huda Sha'arawi .
If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
Thanks, Staglit (talk) 21:37, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Elf
[edit]Hi, Alaric. I am glad to see you take an interest in the Elf article. I enjoy your serious contributions.
With regard the unfortunate situation, Bloodofox is a cyber bully with a history of harassment and abusive editing. Even here is massive deletions rather than line-by-line considerations evidences his nonacademic agenda and aggression. He works persistently to delete and censor scholarly information that he dislikes. I had a bad experience earlier when he succeeded in renaming an other article without consensus and in a way that destroyed its history and information. I was unfamiliar with the administration of wikipedia, and the admins didnt seem to understand how the old article was destroyed. Heh, meanwhile I was in a panic. Please, help undo any future POV damage by Bloodofox.
Anyway, I look forward to working with you and others to try make the information about the Elf solid and nuanced. It is an important and fascinating topic. Haldrik (talk) 01:14, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. I read your excellent blog post after seeing it in the Signpost, and had a go at editing Hans Jonatan to make the refs easier to understand. A few pictures in that article would definitely improve it, and it would be interesting to know whether this one is old enough to be in the public domain. Speedy deletion nomination of Icelandic municipal elections, 2014
[edit]Hello Alarichall,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Icelandic municipal elections, 2014 for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Eric Julius Biörner, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Erik Julius Biörner. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.
It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 18:07, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, I see that this was due to copying the content into a new article with the proper spelling. For future reference, please note that the preferred way to rename a page is to do a Move from the "More" menu up by the search bar. Doing a copy-paste move causes problems keeping the edit history intact, which is needed for the license we publish under. I've requested a fix for this one, and am just letting you know for future cases like this. Thanks for your work! CrowCaw 23:49, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Editing of Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks
[edit]As you may not know, the article Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks was recently put up for deletion. It passed easily. See the results at [[1]].
But the proposer of the deletion had a valid point in that citations were rather lacking. I have attempted to improve the article by adding some.
However the one point I am stuck on is the matter of a supposed relationship between Heiðrek and Ermamaric. I don't know the source for this theory. Perhaps you do, and might edit the article appropriately. This theory was questioned by an anonymous user on the article talk page at Talk:Hervarar_saga_ok_Heiðreks and no response was made. I rather agree with the user but do not wish to make changes based only on that.

[edit]I don't agree, I'm afraid. I think Category:Icelandic writers ought to be depreciated - I think the category is too broad. I tried to put her in the requisite sub-categories - Category:Icelandic children's writers, for instance - and if I missed any, I'm sorry. But by and large I think all of the writers-by-nationality categories should be treated more and more like container categories; I think it's much better to categorize people by the types of writer that they are. It's more properly specific, I think. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:02, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- In that case, perhaps you'd be so good as to do this for all the people categorised as Icelandic writers? At the moment, the outcome is sexist (with all but one male Icelandic writer being included as 'Icelandic writers' whereas women tend to be marginalised as 'Icelandic women writers'). That said, I note that Icelandic women writers contains a hatnote saying 'This is a non-diffusing subcategory of Category:Icelandic writers. It includes writers that can also be found in the parent category, or in diffusing subcategories of the parent.' So at the moment, your policy runs contrary to that hatnote. Alarichall (talk) 07:43, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but in what way? It says "or in diffusing subcategories of the parent" - Category:Icelandic children's writers is a diffusing subcategory of the parent, no? I will do what I can to clean up the parent cat - it's far from the only writers-by-nationality category which requires it - but it's going to take some time. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:28, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply! Just to make sure we understand each other: I don't object to categorising Arndís in Category:Icelandic children's writers. But I do object to categorising her in Category:Icelandic women writers but not in the parent Category:Icelandic writers given that (a) male writers are not presently being treated in this way and (b) the hatnote for Category:Icelandic women writers makes it clear that people might belong both to the child category Category:Icelandic women writers and to the parent category Category:Icelandic writers. Hopefully your offer to 'clean up' Category:Icelandic writers does reflect an understanding of the sexism that the parent category currently exhibits! I'd be happy to sort it out myself, but don't want to do a load of edits if you're going to come and change them all!
- Well...to the point that "male writers aren't being treated that way". They will do. I'm getting around to it - it's a slow task (made slower by the fact that my computer has been giving me troubles this weekend.) But I intend on parity with both - I'm not singling out women writers in any way. It's just that we have the categories in place for women writers which we don't, as much, for male writers, so it's easier to start there and work my way away from it.
- Thanks for the reply! Just to make sure we understand each other: I don't object to categorising Arndís in Category:Icelandic children's writers. - As for the point that people might belong to both categories...well, yes, technically they might. But I think having people in a generic "writers" category, when they're already in subcategories, tends to make things needlessly confusing. There are times when it's appropriate, yes, but I think the category tree for Icelandic writers is diverse enough that breaking it down is easier. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:59, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks. I'll see if I can get it done myself :-) Good luck getting the computer to behave! Alarichall (talk) 17:18, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Duplicate refs
[edit]Just been reading through all your great articles and tagging them as reviewed...but there's no need to type in every reference five times! Just use the cite tool (which lets you paste in an ISBN and build the ref, too), type a name for the reference into refname, hit preview, and then you can choose the reference from 'named references' and insert the same one in anywhere. Blythwood (talk) 06:25, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not entirely convinced about this method. I see that the changes you made to Sigurðar saga fóts have removed the precise page numbers from some of the references, leaving readers to hunt around the article trying to find where particular issues are discussed. I should probably get round to seeing what other options Wikipedia has for referencing, but I'm quite comfortable just putting in full and precise references each time, in the knowledge that if that if one section of the page gets rewritten, the references elsewhere won't be affected :-) Alarichall (talk) 12:38, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

- I don't understand. The article is written in English, not in Icelandic, so I can't translate it into English. I see that the note added to the page also says 'This article is written in Iceland. If it is intended for readers from the Iceland language community, it should be contributed to the Wikipedia in that language. See the list of Wikipedias.' But the article meets the usual criteria for notability for books, and I don't see why English-speakers should be deprived of an opportunity to read about it. Alarichall (talk) 14:27, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
The article Marion Little has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bondegezou (talk) 13:48, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
RE - all the links you're adding to Sovereignty goddess, in multiple articles are redlinks. Best to leave the text as is until the article exists. See the link above for how to proceed with this. Thanks. - CorbieV ☊ ☼ 17:18, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Sulfurboy (talk) 08:01, 26 August 2017 (UTC)About elves and what not
[edit]Hello Alaric Hall, I am considering to do a GA assessment on the article Elf, but i'd like to check one thing first. I noticed you have only recently been editing the article, mostly adding your own work. Are you familiar and have you checked the accuracy of the other citations? The reason why I ask is that a GA assessment can be quite an ordeal if the nominator is not familiar with all the sources cited.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 15:02, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
Okay, I am starting the review. I hope you are ready.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 22:16, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks! Sorry I didn't see this in time. There will have been some references that I inherited from earlier versions of the entry and didn't check, but most of them I did indeed check. I hope it doesn't prove a waste of your time and thanks for your hard work on Wikipedia either way! Alarichall (talk) 08:50, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
- Alarichall, it is okay, i've started here.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 09:20, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Elf you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Farang Rak Tham -- Farang Rak Tham (talk) 22:40, 25 September 2017 (UTC)
- Alarichall, if you haven't got any time to look at the assessment, let me know now, so I can just fail the nomination and we can get it over with.--Farang Rak Tham (talk) 11:40, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks! Sorry, I didn't realise you expected me to be responding as you went along: I thought I should wait until you'd finished. I appreciate all the very helpful feedback. I'll be happy to work on the article over the next fortnight or so, if that's okay? Alarichall (talk) 13:25, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
The article Elf you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Elf for things which need to be addressed. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Farang Rak Tham -- Farang Rak Tham (talk) 19:00, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
The article Elf you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Elf for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Farang Rak Tham -- Farang Rak Tham (talk) 23:41, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
Hello again
[edit]Hello Alarichall, do you have any time to do a GA assessment yourself? I have an article about a half-historical, half-mythical person called Maudgalyayana that I have submitted for GA. - Hi there @Farang Rak Tham:! It has been a very long time, but I'm on holiday for the next couple of weeks so I thought I'd ask if there's anything you'd like doing on here? I never got to repay you for your help with the elf article! Alarichall (talk) 18:51, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Actually I pinged you briefly a few months ago, remember? Some discussion on the WikiProject Religion. But you are right, we didn't talk for a while. I remember the elf article as quite a rewarding GA, because it reminded and revived my Tolkien passion a bit. I only have two articles about Thai people, not sure if you'd care to review: it's Luang Por Dhammajayo and 2017–18 Thai temple fraud investigations, but the latter contains mostly Thai language sources.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:00, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions. I'll leave a comment on your talk page accordingly. Alarichall (talk) 16:44, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

Ways to improve Le Roman du Comte d'Artois
[edit]Hi, I'm Boleyn. Alarichall, thanks for creating Le Roman du Comte d'Artois!
I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. This appears to have no sources. Is the 'external link' actually your source rather than a friendly suggestion? If so, can you change the title from 'external links' to 'References' or 'Sources' so this is clear? If it isn't your source, can you pelase add your source.
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.
Boleyn (talk) 08:03, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
- Can you please answer the above? Thanks, Boleyn (talk) 20:23, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry. Actually, my source was a conference paper I was listening to. Obviously you're right that the page needs to cite written sources. TBH I've been hoping that someone who knows more about it will work on it eventually. But obviously at some point I might have a chance to look this stuff up properly myself. Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate
[edit]Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.
I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!
Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!
If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.
Thank you!

ArbCom 2017 election voter message
[edit]Hello, Alarichall. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
I am not sure that he would pass GNG. Has he only written one academic book? If there are multiple reviews, and reviews of his novel (which I've read), it may be OK. But I can't find a single review of Pre-Romantic Poetry on JSTOR. What do you think? Please reply here on your talkpage and ping me. Thank you. Zigzig20s (talk) 07:18, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

Confusion in the previous message- WAM
[edit]Hello again, I believe the earlier message has created some confusion. If you have already submitted the details in the Google form, it has been accepted, you don't need to submit it again. The earlier reminder is for those who haven't yet submitted their Google form or if they any alternate way to provide their address. I apologize for creating the confusion. Thanks-Sailesh Patnaik
Jaufre and Talat / Talac de Rougemont
[edit]Hello Alarichall Sorry for inappropriate addition to your quote. Thanks for moving (and not deleting) note re. Talat de Rougemont. Intrigued by this character and wonder whether he derives from some (lost?) character from Welsh Mythology, given association with both Yder and Gilfaethwy fab Don / Girflet filz Do. regards Flobbadob.
Hi Alaric
A disambiguation page would be useful: bolded alternative titles should be access points whether by redirect, hatnote or dab page. I'd have done it myself but I'm on my phone and partner is busy on the laptop! Thanks. PamD 13:01, 28 January 2018 (UTC) PamD 13:01, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Union Atlantic
[edit]Hi! Union Atlantic was listed at WP:CP because of the very long quotation, which I've just removed as quite out of proportion to the length of the page. Now I find that you were never notified. I'm truly sorry about that (and yes, I should have checked that before I did anything else), but don't feel that it is appropriate to restore the quote. In general, quotations should make up – at most – only a small percentage of article text, and should only be added where they are the subject of discussion in the article. This, of course, is more breached than it is observed. Question: are you sure that this book is notable by our standards? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:17, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I'm not sure there were any copyright problems here (depends what you call 'excessive') -- although I recognise it's bad style to have long quotations in Wikipedia entries. But anyway, I've paraphrased it now. I also added links to reviews -- again, I recognise that if I'd done a better job on this article in the first place, you'd have been spared asking; on the other hand, in the time it took you to ask about the book, you could have established its notability! I guess you'd see this article as an example of Wikipedia:Don't hope the house will build itself; personally I'd see it as a case of Wikipedia:If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But no harm done. Good luck with future editing! Alarichall (talk) 00:47, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Updating the 2018 UK higher education strike article
[edit]Hi, hopefully you've seen this already but the strike article is now featured on the In the News section of Wikipedia's front page in the Ongoing section. I'm told for it to remain there it needs to be regularly updated everyday. I'll do my best but better if both of us or others can contribute to keep it spruced up and uptodate each day if possible. Thanks again for all your hard work on this. Cheers! Stinglehammer (talk) 23:07, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- Noted, @Stinglehammer:. No worries! Alarichall (talk) 11:13, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
- PS if you find yourself wanting to work on the article yourself and short of inspiration, it would be good to integrate references to the House of Commons report, as a good, well balanced, authoritative source, into the background sections. The report is linked in the external links. Obviously I'll try and work on this myself, but thought I'd mention it. Alarichall (talk) 23:11, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Alarichall: Possibly you've already seen this but the article has now been removed from the In the News section. A good run while it lasted but a tad alarming some ITN voices did not see this as ever being newsworthy. Anyway, I've updated with the new strike dates announcement for 16-20 April and wish I could have found time to do more. Thanks again for your editing efforts on this over the last few weeks. I daresay there will be more to report on this story and more updates to add in due course. Thanks again! Stinglehammer (talk) 20:18, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
June 2018
[edit]Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia, as you did to Töfrahöllin. While objective prose about beliefs, organisations, people, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Caution for plugging own book/report on multiple articles. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 10:01, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Hi there @Thomas.W:! I take your point that Wikipedia editors referencing their own academic publications is sensitive. Re your deletion of the mention of útrásarvíkingar in Vikings, would you be happy if I reinstate the prose with different references? (I cited my piece because the pages cited refer quite comprehensively to past work, but I can just as well cite that work directly.) Re your editing of Töfrahöllin, we now have an awkward situation where the identifications of sources that I made are still in the article, but now with no reference. What would you prefer here? To remove the information entirely, or to reinstate the reference? I don't think we can have it both ways! Alarichall (talk) 11:33, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- In Vikings it would be OK to reinstate the material with different sources, and in Töfrahöllin it would be best to remove it all, if there are no "neutral" sources available. Wikipedia has very strict rules regarding COI editing, including that editors should never add their own material (even people who are widely acknowledged as experts in their fields have been indefinitely blocked from editing here, and had their websites/publications blacklisted, for doing it...). I haven't looked at the rest of your edits, but the same rules would of course apply there... - Tom | Thomas.W talk 11:52, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- We can do that then. But, for future reference, I think you might have misread the COI guidance on citing yourself. It says 'Using material you have written or published is allowed within reason, but only if it is relevant, conforms to the content policies, including WP:SELFPUB, and is not excessive. Citations should be in the third person and should not place undue emphasis on your work. When in doubt, defer to the community's opinion: propose the edit on the article's talk page and allow others to review it' (Wikipedia:SELFCITE). This is very different from your idea that 'editors should never add their own material'! Alarichall (talk) 12:18, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- What I wrote is what most other editors seem to feel, and the edits by you that I reverted were sourced only to your own material, which definitely is "excessive", especially since your comment further up in this thread says that other sources also exist, at least for your edit on Vikings. Doing it on multiple articles also qualifies as citation spamming, which is a blockable offence here. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 12:45, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Well, sort of. As it says at WP:REFSPAM, 'citation spamming is a subtle form of spam and should not be confused with legitimate good-faith additions intended to verify article content and help build the encyclopedia.' That is to say, legitimate, good-faith self-citations that verify content and help build the encyclopaedia are not citation spamming. Alarichall (talk) 13:03, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- WP:REFSPAM also says
"Citation spamming is a form of search engine optimization or promotion that typically involves the repeated insertion of a particular citation or reference in multiple articles by a single contributor. Often these are added not to verify article content but rather to populate numerous articles with a particular citation"
, which seems to be a good description of the edits in question, especially since you admitted you could have used other references. And your wikilawyering over it isn't helping your case... - Tom | Thomas.W talk 14:18, 28 June 2018 (UTC)- Ah well, I guess we'll just have to agree to differ over what constitutes spam. I'd just finish this discussion for my part by encouraging you to go carefully undoing accurate, relevant, good-faith edits in future! I've been editing Wikipedia for years and won't be going anywhere, but it's the sort of thing that could put off new users contributing relevant expertise. Alarichall (talk) 15:52, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Alarichall. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 12:54, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- Thomas.W, kind of odd to post such a heavy tag without any explanation. In this default form, it doesn't inform of anything, and only leaves questions to people not involved. What is the conflict of interest?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:04, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Having looked at the section above, i think I can understand a little more. Out of curiosity, may I ask on which policy you base your understanding that no scholar may refer to his own publications while editing on Wikipedia?--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:11, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Farang Rak Tham: The general conflict of interest rules can be found at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and the shortcut to using own sources (which is a subsection of the COI rules) is WP:SELFCITE. Using own publications as sources is allowed "within reason, but only if it is relevant, conforms to the content policies, including WP:SELFPUB, and is not excessive". What is excessive or not is generally interpreted very restrictively, though, and the posts that led to the section above this were way over the line. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 22:32, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- So where did Alarichall go wrong? I don't see any violation of SELFCITE with these edits, which is the only wiki article I see you referring to. I do think your revert here is problematic, as no spamming took place. Please add more explanation plus links, as I am getting a bit suspicious here.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:42, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- I have no intention of entering into a detailed discussion with you, since you AFAIK aren't directly involved. You asked general questions, and I answered the general questions, but that's as far as I will go. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 22:54, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I suspect that Alarichall has added his books or articles to too many wiki articles. However, you should provide more than one example, so other editors can follow, especially when you are accusing someone of a thing like a COI, which can lead to serious measures quite easily. It also seems a far stretch to go from a violation of selfcite to a full-fledged COI, especially when it concerns a scholar in a field with nearly no real-life consequences, and no political or economical interests. To put it bluntly, someone having an certain scholarly opinion about dwarves or elves is not a COI—at worst, it is UNDUE and should be tagged as such. Similarly, an article from a university is not spamming.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:57, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Also, I find your usage of terms like wikilawyering questionable, as well the conflicting tagging which you did in the edit linked above.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 22:57, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thomas.W, I was looking at this talk page for another reason, then saw your tags. I don't have any direct involvement in the why and what of these tags, but since these tags are public and may affect the tagged editor's reputation, you should provide sufficient reason—even when editors not involved ask. Not providing sufficient reason for a tag like COI can easily be understood as form of tendentious or uncivil editing.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 23:04, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- I removed the COI tag per WP:UNRESPONSIVE and WP:CIVIL, as the person tagging has been unwilling to explain his tag. I suspect the advertising/promotion tag is unwarranted as well.--Farang Rak Tham (Talk) 12:30, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Farang Rak Tham: You seem to have misunderstood how quite a few things work here: it's not up to you to decide if a COI-tag and a warning for promotion/spamming posted by another user is warranted or not, you have no right to remove a tag that has been posted by someone else on another user's talk page (the user, i.e. in this case Alarichall, is free to remove it, but you're not), and I have no obligation to give a detailed explanation for it to you, other than pointing you to relevant rules, as I did. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 17:08, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks Farang Rak Tham. I've been a bit confused about what to make of these accusations, so it's good of you to make your own enquiries and offer a view. Alarichall (talk) 16:46, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- Hi @Thomas.W: I have no objection to the removal of this tag, so no harm done there. I actually wasn't sure if I was allowed to remove it myself. Alarichall (talk) 17:11, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- User's are allowed to remove anything from their own talk pages, except declined unblock requests while still blocked. Removing content is simply seen as a confirmation of having read whatever messages/warnings they have received. Removing content from a page doesn't delete it, though, everything can still be found in the page history, easily accessible for anyone. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 17:19, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- That makes sense. Since I wouldn't want anyone to imagine I have something to hide, I'll leave them here. Alarichall (talk) 18:43, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

- I have no intention of entering into a detailed discussion with you, since you AFAIK aren't directly involved. You asked general questions, and I answered the general questions, but that's as far as I will go. - Tom | Thomas.W talk 22:54, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

- WOW! I must admit I didn't even know this was a thing. I should evidently learn how to nominate some other people. Thanks, Buster7! I'm really chuffed. Alarichall (talk) 16:03, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
- It's "a thing" alright and you deserve it. Nominating someone in your circle of editing would be much appreciated. This is the nomination page. ―Buster7 ☎ 02:57, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks Buster7! I'll do some nominating asap. I can certainly think of some deserving recipients. Alarichall (talk) 18:21, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
Please see a recent dispute that was reported at WP:AN3 about the Harold Fairhair article. The IP was keen on removing the skeptical material that you had previously added to the article. Though I have no idea who is correct, I was hoping to see something on the talk page about the issue. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 04:53, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note, EdJohnston. I can put something on the talk page. Alarichall (talk) 06:58, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]I humbly thank you for your barnstar, I didnt expect any thing like that. I will try to leave edit summaries in the future.
However, some editors have objected to some of my edits on the page, mostly about the use of images. I also have had an unanswered peer review on the article. Some editors have already made some changes so its not the same that it looked a few days ago. Could you come to the talk page and give your reflection on these issues? Sunriseshore (talk) 06:06, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
As the talk page to Post Classical History has become increasingly confused, I have decided to reply to you here. I appreciated the link you sent me. I think this information could be used in many places in the Post Classical Article, such as the End of Period section as well. I am excited to see that historians are taking a more theoretical approach52 in handling the way we structure history. I in particular remember the 'One God World' they mentioned.
Also, though I noticed what they said about the Black Death contradicts one of my maps. The source claims that there has not been evidence found of the Black Death occuring in the Delhi Sultante or the Yuan Dynasty in the 1347- 52 time frame. Do you have any thoughts on this issue in particular? I remember before looking for plauge information and seeing claims of it moving east but no primary sources.

[edit]Hello, Alaric! I recently started Wikipedia:WikiProject Folklore to address the numerous, systemic issues that Wikipedia faces regarding the topic of folklore, including genres such as myth. I'd like to invite you to participate! :bloodofox: (talk) 23:17, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Amazing Polar Article
[edit]I recent found this, it reminded me of what you had said on the Post Classical Talk page, about circumpolar peoples. I really want to include information about the polar migrations in the article. You are welcome to provide insight in how it should be done and what sources can be provided. Sunriseshore (talk) 11:04, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Sunriseshore: Thanks! Yes, this was just the kind of thing I was thinking of. I haven't forgotten about the Post-Classical page: I've just been busy with the day job lately. I look forward to working on this, including making use of this article :-) At the moment the circumpolar region is implicitly covered in the Americas and Eurasia sections. Might I suggest that we try to lift the circumpolar region out as a separate section, on a par with 'History by region in the Old-World', 'Eurasia', 'Oceania', etc.? This would primarily involve moving 'Norse Contact and the Polar Regions' into a new 'Circumpolar region' section, and developing it. In terms of secondary reading, I was going to start with the article here and this one: doi:10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199271016.013.0026. (The latter might be available via sci-hub or libgen?) Alarichall (talk) 15:00, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
A quick search through listed links did not help me find the named article. I will continue to research however. I think the proposed section makes sense. The new section may cove specifically the number of migrations that took place to Polar North America at this time.Sunriseshore (talk) 22:59, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello! Farang Rak Tham told me that you study mythology and I know you wrote most of the article "Elf," so I was wondering if you would be interested in reviewing the article "Satyr," which I have recently nominated for GA status. I took this article on as a project a few weeks ago because, all the way back when I was in fourth grade, there was a boy in my class who thought (apparently in all seriousness) that I was secretly a satyr disguised as a person. That was how I was first introduced to Greek mythology and, from there, ancient cultures in general. As I grew older, I learned that the original horse-like Greek satyrs were far more obscene than the relatively tame goat-legged ones my elementary school friends and I knew from reading children's fantasy literature. Nonetheless, I still find satyrs interesting because they fall in the uncanny "twilight zone" between the human and the divine, much like the elves you yourself have written about. (In fact, classicist M. L. West has argued that satyrs and elves share a common Indo-European heritage, a possibility which is discussed in the first section of the article.) If you have any articles currently up for GA review, I would be willing to review one of those in exchange. --Katolophyromai (talk) 16:18, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

- Hey guys! Thanks for thinking of me. I'd certainly be interested in doing this... I'll see if I can take it on this weekend. I'll let you know if I can't. If I can't do it then then I probably won't be able to for a month or so, but would still be happy to do it after that if still necessary. Alarichall (talk) 19:43, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your willingness to help! I really appreciate it. I would be happy if you could do it this weekend, although, ironically this weekend is probably going to be the one weekend this month when I will be the most busy. I will probably still have time for the review, though, so I have no problems there; I just may be slower to respond than I normally would be. If you cannot do it this weekend, then I will see if I can find someone else to do it, but I have no idea if that search will be successful, since it is usually rather difficult to find editors willing to do GA reviews. --Katolophyromai (talk) 19:54, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Riddle 44 or 45?
[edit]Can I check: we have Exeter Book Riddle 44 but the lookup to Megan Cavell takes us to "Commentary for Riddle 45". (And you might want to add something to our article saying "is dough not penis"?) --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:16, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks! I should have spotted that. It turns out that the problem is that the number is wrong at Anglo-Saxon_riddles#List_of_Exeter_Book_Riddles (which is probably also my fault). Unravelling what's gone wrong there will take a while and I can't fix it right now, but I have at least moved the Riddle 44 page to Riddle 45! I'll try and make time to fix the list of riddles soon. I appreciate you giving me the heads up! Alarichall (talk) 23:33, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

Why?
[edit]Hello, I can understand why you reverted my edits on poems and on Phonological history of Old English, first I wanted ask about that, but yes, it also has the References page. So bad.
But what's wrong with my edits on Swithun? I just changed the orthography a bit, it's a minor point, it's how the name would actually look in Old English. And then sƿiþ, what harm would it be to stay written with Ƿynn? That's only a word, it doesn't deal with any reference! It was such a minor change, 'cause I'm perfectly aware I'm not allowed to do any more, but no, it should be reverted too. Please, may it stay? At least in two words it would be how it's supposed to be. Birdofadozentides (talk) 04:59, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi there, Birdofadozentides! The thing is that no professional editor of Old English transcribes wynn with ƿ: everyone uses w. It doesn't make sense for Wikipedia to use idiosyncratic spelling that no-one else is using: it's confusing for readers and inconsistent with scholarly consensus. Thanks Alarichall (talk) 23:55, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for answering so late, I don't know why your answer didn't appear in my notifications before. "idiosyncratic spelling that no-one else is using"? It's the original spelling of Old English! There was no such letter as w in Old English, and the fact that the whole world suddenly desided to use it instead of Ƿynn, the actual Old English letter, doesn't make it right. "confusing for readers"? at least the readers will know the truth, they'll read more about it, perhaps it could be the first time they would hear about Ƿynn.
"inconsistent with scholarly consensus?" Why scholarly consensus means more than original manuscrits, why modern editions mean more than manuscrits? Wikipedia could make a change and not support that traditon, but what am talking about, of course, no.
It's only two words. Why cannot just two word stay with Ƿynn? What if we write two options, one with that "beloved" letter and the other one with Ƿynn? Using it: " / " I'm kind of disgusted by this variant, but if it's the only way the words could stay with Ƿynn, I'd have to agree. And there will be no "confusing for readers" then. Please. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Hello, Alaric. Germanic paganism could use more eyes. We've got a user over there adding (and re-adding) material such as "the earth goddess known as Vanir and the god of war, Aesir" without any notable intervention beyond my own efforts. I'll go ahead and prepare a grounded rewrite of the article to better stave off this sort of thing in the future, but in the mean time the article certainly needs more attention. :bloodofox: (talk) 20:10, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

In need of advice
[edit]There is an ongoing dispute in the Post Classical History article, some users have said the section I wrote on Polyoneisan-South American contact was promoting fringe theories. However, the purpose of the section was to simply show, that there is an argument, on the issue. Also my sources include Cambridge University, and the American Society for Archaeology. If you think I am in the wrong here, please let me know -Sunriseshore
The source given is extremely poor. Note the usage of the word "assume" on stated page, for instance. Pre-70 AD date very common in doing a google search. I did not supply a reference, since the second line backed up the first. Nonetheless, here's one: https://carm.org/when-were-gospels-written-and-by-whom I'm sure there are many better references out there, though this that one covers the basics well. Jim Percy (talk) 19:39, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hi there Jim Percy! Sorry for replying slowly: you caught me at a busy time. Thanks for the message! The source you're suggesting is a website rather than, say, a university textbook or peer-reviewed scholarly article. I had a look at information about CARM, the organisation that hosts the page, on its homepage, and it says 'CARM is a 501(c)3, non-profit, Christian ministry dedicated to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ and the promotion and defense of the Christian Gospel, doctrine, and theology'. So this is probably not the most objective organisation to be sourcing information from. I'm not saying that the stuff on that page about the dating of the Gospels can't be improved -- just that good quality, scholarly sources are needed, particularly on a topic like this, where different people's religious views might make editing contentious. Thanks! Alarichall (talk) 06:24, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Alarichall: Yes, I understand that a book source is vastly superior to one online, and that the person behind the online source is critical. I suppose, maybe, it's just far too controversial of a topic to be wrapped up in one sentence, since there is so much difference of opinion as to the exact dates. I'm going to research more next time, before making a change. I noticed that the stated reference book (in the article), has a question mark in the title. The author is presenting a rare view that the "virgin birth" was spiritual not historical. Nonetheless, seemingly quite a scholar in theology. PS. Yes, I would never have given a website like that as a source, for exactly the reason you stated. Jim Percy (talk) 14:58, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
Leeds Museums & Galleries
[edit]Hi Alaric, Please would you be able to help? I've completed a draft page for Leeds Museums & Galleries, which is here Draft:Leeds_Museums_&_Galleries (I think?) - I can't work out to how to request a move to the re-direct page that I *think* you've had something to do with? I tried a technical move request, but was that code came up as invalid? All advice gratefully received (Lajmmoore (talk) 14:39, 26 September 2019 (UTC))
- We can't move the draft page to Leeds Museums & Galleries because that title has previously been in use for articles (which were deleted). But the new article you've drafted seems uncontroversial -- clearly notable and well referenced -- so I've requested a move at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests. Nice work! Alarichall (talk) 21:46, 26 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks v much! Will check out the technical requests for the future! (Lajmmoore (talk) 17:44, 29 September 2019 (UTC))

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!
[edit]Greetings!
After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.
On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:
- Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
- Diversity winner
- Gender-gap fillers
For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Talk:Hanna Diyab
[edit]A tag has been placed on Talk:Hanna Diyab requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
The central contention of this article, that Diyab was, or might have been, the primary author of Aladdin, is essentially derived from a single, highly questionable source - a French language work that seems on the face of it to be much more probably a "historic reconstruction" novel than an authentic 18th century autobiography of Diyab himself. The "historians" who allegedly draw conclusions based its authenticity are not specifically identified. Other sources than the alleged biography support our previous consensus on this subject and are not reactions, either way, to the authenticity of the autobiography
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Frideswide
[edit]Hi, I pinged you on Talk:Frithuswith#Requested_move_9_October_2019 (proposed renaming to Frideswide). You edited a related article recently and your page suggests you have studied Old English and may know how F is referred to in recent academic texts. TSventon (talk) 18:04, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
Given your work on articles such as elf, you may find the discussion at Talk:Phoenix_(folklore)#Requested_move_31_October_2019 interesting. :bloodofox: (talk) 04:27, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
The article Vix Lowthion has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Not sufficiently notable. Only electoral success is as a parish Councillor, so fails WP:NPOL. Fails WP:GNG: lack of articles about her in reliable sources.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bondegezou (talk) 19:47, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
- And same for Carla Denyer. Bondegezou (talk) 19:56, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Sugar edit
[edit]On my talk page, you said: You reverted an edit I made to Sugar with the comment 'no significant improvements', but I made two or three significant improvements:
- At the moment the article implies that the word sugar was borrowed directly from Persian to French, whereas it was actually borrowed via Arabic, as I indicated in my edit.
- I added a reference to the Oxford English Dictionary, which is a more reliable source than the website previously cited.
- I copy-edited the text for clarity.
I wonder, then, if you'd see your way to reinstating the edit? Thanks!
- The differences between the existing content and your edit here were intermediate steps covered in the EOD source. I felt your edit added unnecessary intermediate details uncritical to the actual etymology leading to the English, sugar; we also don't mention uses from Greek, Spanish, Italian, etc., WP:NOTEVERYTHING. --Zefr (talk) 17:59, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
- So I get that you might think that English Wikipedia should only deal with the etymologies of English words. (Rather limiting in my view, but there we go.) But at the moment the article implies that the word travelled directly from Persian to French, which is misleading. If you want to cut out intermediate steps in Wikipedia's account of the transmission of the word, you might as well edit the article to say that the word sugar comes from Sanskrit. But it wouldn't be very informative. So if we could put the Arabic stage of transmission and the improved reference in, that would be good. Alarichall (talk) 21:20, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice
[edit]Hi Alarichall, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.
Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.
To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

...as an addendum...
[edit]...to my note on that talk page: I've looked at some of the things you wrote. I don't know what your status is ("lecturer" in the US is a shitty position, but for you guys it's different, I believe), but I've started including the articles I wrote on my annual reports, including DYKs with page views--my chair, and the dean, approve and we are about to include "this kind of writing" in the tenure requirements as an option. I've written up a memo that includes a discussion of the peer-reviewing process for DYK, GA, and FA, and they're taking it seriously. Anglo-Saxon settlement (linguistics)
[edit]Hi Alarichall, this is CelticBrain. I don't know whether you've had a chance to look at the changes I've made on Celtic language decline in England but I was hoping to take some of those edits up to the linguistics section of the broader Anglo-Saxon settlement page. I've mocked up a version of what I intend to do in my user sandbox (which I can link if you want). I do understand, though, if you have a lot of work going on and are unable to attend to this at the moment--I just wanted to make sure we were in agreement before I went ahead with any editing.
Broadly, though, most of my would-be edits involve the incorporation of more recent work that argues, as many scholars seem to be doing nowadays, that the level of Anglo-Saxon migration, and by extension the ways by which Old English spread, varied from place to place. Also, for the "debate" and "place names" sections I've tried to limit the references to language scholars.
Anyway, let me know what you think. Thanks a lot! CelticBrain (talk) 05:43, 12 August 2020 (UTC)CelticBrain

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Actually I am still finding this to be invaluable: [1]
I'd appreciate any feedback here. Do you know how to upgrade the article to a B rating? I really don't like the C grade that is hanging around.

Revealing identity
[edit]Hello Alaric,
I'm considering linking my profile to my real life name and job in academia. As someone who has already done that, I'm just curious about your experience. Have you faced any harassment because of it?
Thanks!--Ermenrich (talk) 14:27, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hey ho Ermenrich! Sorry for taking a while to reply. I don't usually edit in very contentious areas of Wikipedia, but no, I've never had anyone harass me using my real-life identity for work I do on Wikimedia projects. Very occasionally I get a positive real-life communication or query about it, which has only ever been useful :-) Alarichall (talk) 15:28, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Alaric. I've been thinking I might want to step back from editing eastern European and 20th century topics for that reason. I have some exposure to pan-Turkists too. Hard to figure out. But I'm glad your experience has been positive!--Ermenrich (talk) 18:35, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Ermenrich:-just as a word of caution, I've had some super negative experiences with this. Editing a few new religious movement articles in particular resulted in adherents sending me death threats and once the son of a scholar I added to an article about attempted to track me down. Instead, he seems to have harassed some poor soul at his workplace in New England unrelated to me—and all for adding WP:RS-compliant material he preferred was not on his father's Wikipedia page (specifically this material). The Wikimedia Foundation was not remotely helpful. From my experience, you may be opening yourself up to a lot of harassment, some of it from unexpected quarters. :bloodofox: (talk) 21:41, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Harley Prayer Book
[edit]I can understand your reversion. I did indeed fumble-finger "8th or 9th century"; my new bifocals are not as good for typing and proofreading as my old readers, witness my recent track record of having to go back for minor edits. No original research, though; everything is at the Old English rune poem page I wikilinked, including the pic file of the verses. What jumped out at me was the same time range for the documents using the dotted ẏ. To the extent I was "original" at all, it was picking out the example of bẏþ as the word to look at, since (a) it was short, and (b) it heads most of the (non-runic text) first lines of stanzas. I could as easily have gone on with examples (ᵹehƿẏlcum, pẏꞃþꞅcẏpe, hꞃẏꞅteꝺ,...), but this article wasn't about that. I leave it to you to decide. – •Raven .talk 12:15, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the message and sorry for not replying more promptly. Yes, I think you've misunderstood what's going on here. In Old English scripts it's normal for the letter 'y' to have a dot over it—this doesn't just happen in the Rune Poem, and is just part of how scribes wrote that letter. The "annotation symbol resembling a rune-like dotted ‘Y’" described as appearing in the Harley Prayerbook isn't the same thing at all—it's just that the description given here makes it sound like this symbol looks like a dotted 'y'. Alarichall (talk) 07:54, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- Ah. Thank you for clarifying. – .Raven .talk 18:42, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Cambridge University Library Taylor-Schechter Misc 8-47 recto Yehuda haLevi riddles colours inverted.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:06, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
Átta revert
[edit]Hello. To further explain my revert on Átta, the Pitchfork citation at the end of the sentence said that Sigur Rós would be debuting songs from the album on the tour, and they did. I thought that was pretty clear without specifying that the tour was "in support of the album", but I've added wording clarifying that now. Tours in support of albums, or even a tour that is not explicitly named after the contemporaneous album but on which songs from the album are played live for the first time generally always warrant at least a mention on the album's article. That's what I did here. As for it being "outdated", it could have simply been changed to read that they embarked on the tour, not "will embark". Thanks. Ss112 07:27, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

Invite to Join Wikipedia Asian Month 2023
[edit]You are receiving this message because you participated in the Wikipedia Asian Month 2022 as an organizer or editor.
Dear all,
The Wikipedia Asian Month 2023[1] is coming ! The campaign start within a flexible 30 days from November to December. Following with the changes of the rules made by last year, the wish to have more people get to know Asia and Asian related topic is the same! Click "Here" to Organize/Join a WAM Event.
1. Propose "Focus Theme" related to Asia !
If you are based somewhere in Asia, or have specific passion on an Asian topic, please propose your "Focus Theme" by October 25th. The WAM international team will select 5 themes. Please propose your focus theme through this link[2].
2. Enhancing existing articles can also count as part of campaign contribution.
Any edits, including creating new articles or adding new content to existing articles, over 3000 bytes in total would be able to get a reward. Last year, due to this change of rules, the Programs & Events Dashboard was suggested. However, according to community survey of 2022, Fountain Tool is still the best platform for tracking edit and points. You don’t need to create any Dashboard. For the tracking of editing existing article, the international team is currently designing a form. Will soon publish to the main page of WAM 2023.
3. More flexible campaign time
The contribution duration would remain 30days, but we extended the overall campaign timeline to 2 months. All organizers can decide when to start their WAM as long as the whole duration is within November 1st to December 31th. It means that you can participate in WAM based on the needs of your local community.
Timetable
- October 1st, 2023 : Publish International Campaign Page of the Year
- October 5th to 25th, 2023 : Call for focus themes of WAM 2023.
- Before 29 October, 2023: Complete Registration [3] of Each language Wikipedia.
- November 1st, UTC 00:00 to December 31th, UTC 00:00, 2023: Running the Campaign. (Find your local campaign for the actual event date.)
- January 1st to March 15th, 2024: Auditing of each language Wikipedia.
- March 30th, 2024: Deadline of reporting statistics and eligible editors to the International Team
- April 1st to May 15th, 2024: The international team distributes Barnstars and Certificates to eligible editors of each event.
For your information, the main page of Wikipedia Asian Month is currently undertaking a reconstruction for archiving purpose. For the 2023 event please bookmarked this page. We hope you will enjoy Wikipedia Asian Month! If you have any inquiry, feel free to contact us by info@asianmonth.wiki [4]. We look forward to your participation.

The article 1866 Finnish typhus epidemic has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Doesn't meet WP:GNG, specifically the lack of significant coverage.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Categories
[edit]Please note that you're not allowed to file pages in redlinked categories that don't exist, per WP:REDNOT. Wikipedia does not have any categories for "[British County] with etymologically Brittonic names", and per our rule against WP:SHAREDNAME categorization it isn't going to have such categories — any attempt to create them will get taken to WP:CFD for deletion, because we do not categorize topics by characteristics of their names — so since I've had to remove numerous pages from nonexistent "Britonnic names" categories in the past few weeks, you need to stop trying to add pages to categories that don't exist. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 18:48, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Bearcat. Thanks for this post, especially as I was unaware that you were chasing after me, undoing my work as I went along. Insofaras I've used any redlinked categories, it's been by accident. The category https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:English_places_with_etymologically_Brittonic_names does exist (because I created it, back in the summer) and I add county-level categories to it -- but evidently I've forgotten to add missing counties to it on some occasions.
- However, I was unaware of WP:SHAREDNAME. I can see how this policy can apply -- but I also think there's a counter-argument, in that the etymology of a place's name constitutes historical information about the place itself. Maybe most Wikipedians will not consider this of general enough interest to merit a category, but I'd prefer to see what people's opinions are through a proper nomination for deletion, if you'd like to make that nomination? Alarichall (talk) 09:25, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Adding new articles to wikiprojects
[edit]Hi Alaric, when you create new articles, would you mind adding them to wikiprojects? You don't have to rate them yourself if you find it gauche to rate your own. It's no big deal, but it makes it easier for others to find them later for maintenance purposes.
Also just an fyi, since I think this probably was decided after you got autopatrolled: IMDB is typically not accepted as a reliable source in articles these days, since it's user-generated. WP:RATER and User:Headbomb/unreliable.js are handy for these things. Cheers. -- asilvering (talk) 21:35, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion @Asilvering! I've never got my head around wikiprojects, so evidently this is the time to! Alarichall (talk) 18:02, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
