I have reverted the Huggle revert you made on Strawberry Lane, Hammond, Louisiana because the creator did not vandalize the article or add any BLP=defaming material. Monument101 (talk · contribs) improved the article and removed the prod. Prods can be removed by anyone, even the page creator (I'm sure you know this already.). Your final warning message to Monument101 is very bitey and may have caused this user to stop making improvements to the article. Could you strike out the final warning you gave to Monument101 and leave a message to the new user explaining that the user did not vandalize Wikipedia? Thanks, Cunard (talk) 06:19, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

I have struck out the vandalism message. Cunard (talk) 23:38, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Teaneck

Long time no see ;) Anyway, I'm reassessing Teaneck, New Jersey's GA status as part of WP:SWEEPS, an effort to make sure older GAs are up to current criteria. You'll be able to see my review on the article talk page or here. Cheers, Mm40 (talk) 12:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

I still have a few more issues, but I don't have time to bring them up specifically right now. Basically, fix the dead links found with this tool and reference any unreferenced paragraphs. I'll give you seven days starting when I post the specific issues on the review page, so you have plenty of time. Cheers, Mm40 (talk) 23:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Would like your eyes on this...

Since you were the warning editor on the "Travis Bickle" edit war, I'd like your opinion on Talk:Travis Bickle#Recent edit war and handling of this article.

Huggle Mess-up

Hey there, I'd just like to point out this revert; I thought you would like to know about it. Thanks! --Addihockey (t/c) 17:00, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. The page had been effectively blanked, but what I restored to had some vandalism. I had patiently waited to verify the version that was restored, but Huggle would not show it for me. Thanks for making the correction. Alansohn (talk) 17:02, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Edit War

Reverting someones contributions more than once is a big no no, especially when it's not vandalism but true and verifiable information. Sometimes a 'gardener' can kill the flowers too. If you saw the film, you would know it's all true, but to revert something that you obviously have no knowledge about is lame.

Law and Order SVU season 11

Hello Alan - maybe you can tell me why all the edits about the Season 11 episodes are still being allowed when the only citations have been Twitter pages, unconfirmed blogs and "I am right, wait and see". I try very hard to get things right on Wikipedia, but I hope you can understand why it is confusing for some rules to be enforced and not others. If you cannot help me, perhaps you can refer me to someone who can? Thank you very much. Triste Tierra (cannot log in at work) 24.176.191.234 (talk) 19:38, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Vandalism Warning

Hi, I noticed you just gave me a vandalism warning, but I don't think it was fair. All I did was remove a horizontal line as part of my own comment on a talk page that I had accidentally added on my previous edit instead of my signature. Edit on Chetniks

The section that i removed was not ever proven nor did it include documentation. Historians have never accused Draza Mihailovich of mass murder. The title of the section itself is intended to inflame by using 1990's terminology in the context of WWII. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnMSJ (talkcontribs) 03:56, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

There may well be proper justifications, but removal of large sections of text without any explanation is problematic. Please be careful to always provide edit summaries for all of your edits, but be especially detailed when removing content. Alansohn (talk) 12:31, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Removal of Erroneous Information

I left a blank space here http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Gospel_of_Judas#Scholarly_debates because there is no reason for April's information to be there. The New York Times "Article" is merely an online opinion post. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/01/opinion/01deconink.html?_r=2&oref=slogin

Specious, qualitative judgments of other people's edits based on willful ignorance and purposeful misinterpretation of important principles are against Wikipedia policy and have no business being committed here. Personal reference

You, understandably so, wrote me informing why my edit to BYD Auto page was edited back out by Fleetham. I would like to petition an exception based on the "ignore all rules" idea of creating an honest, informative encyclopedia. The information provided is based on personal experience at the car show, observing the vehicles and people's reactions and critiques of the vehicles. I have a couple of pictures to back up the leaks I claim. I believe the idea behind Wikipedia and the "ignore all rules" rule is an open, honest, and unbiased source, even if that requires information to be based on personal knowledge. I am not attempting to discredit BYD, as I did not edit out any of the positive information, and praised the interior quality of the vehicles. Please let me know if seeing my pictures would allow my edit to stand. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.241.56.178 (talk) 13:17, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia is built on reliable (WP:RS) and verifiable (WP:V) sources. While I don't doubt that your report is accurate, I have no way of confirming it to a source in a book, magazine or newspaper. Given the scope of the problems, such as fluids leaking in the display car, it's hard not too expect that the incident would have been covered in the local media. Please add the required sources and please review WP:NOR which documents policy about the "original research" you have done on the subject. Please feel free to reach out with any other questions. Alansohn (talk) 13:28, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Stop.

I have recently added content to the List of Characters in Metalocalypse, only for it to be deleted repetedly. The content may have SEEMED offensive, but if you were familliar with the show in any way you'd KNOW that the content was true. On top of that all you would need to do is actaully read the article to realize that my content was verifyable, instead of reading the first paragraph of it and deciding that I was vandalizing. I think Wikipedia would be a better place if you wouldn't delete content of others in a subject you obviously know absolutly nothing of. And I know I'm not the only one you've done this too, and now your saying my account will be deleted because you know nothing about the articles you're supposedly "cleaning up". So from now on, before deleting the content of others, make sure you actually know what you're doing. Stay off of articles you don't know anything about if you're looking to clean things up. So what? Are you just going to not reply to this? I'd like an apology please. -Jordan

The issue I had with the edits was related to removal of content and sourcing. I stand by the warnings but understand your position. Alansohn (talk) 00:33, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Edit done on the Gainesville, Florida article

Hi! I noticed you reverted my edit of a link about the University of Florida. I changed that link because it was incorrect; the text of the article said something to the effect that the Gainesville campus was the third-largest in the US, but linked to an enrollment list instead, on which UF was further down. UF was indeed third on the campus-size list, so I changed the link thinking that was originally what the text of the article intended. I apologize if I made this assumption in error; otherwise, please change it so that the correct link is reflected in the text. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.3.67.124 (talk) 21:16, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

About the article Thinking

It seems to me, that there is not room for a real discussion about subjects on Wikipedia.

Now, my attempts to reflect upon what thinking is, have been eradicated twice now, by

experienced editor's, without a comment. To me it seems that there is a censorship

involved in this type of behaviour, and that is, by my opinion not fruitfull for

the wonderful service that Wikipedia is. I am restoring my article on 'Thinking'.

Now, if you have any objections, we can talk on the discussion pages. Hribers (talk) 22:53, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

WHY

do you "editors" take this so seriously? The children at deland high schools just wish to get a laugh every now and then and would appreciate it if you "editors" wouldnt delete them so quickly. In addition if you were intelligent in any way you would see that there are a few other things on the page that shouldnt be there but as I have noticed you aren't the sharpest tack. I'm sure you don't anything better to do than delete articles on wikipedia, so enjoy your boring, meaningless life and I will be on my way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.104.64.44 (talk) 02:22, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Think this is your minus

Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia... Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism... Please read the Vandalism article again.

Please do not think highly of yourself to have the rights of accusing others of Vandalism. I have not done it deliberately in my attempt to contribute to Wikipedia. If I (the real person) really have the intention (and i do not have the intention to vandalize) to vandalize pages, you think you can really stop me by threatening to block me with the “nature” of Wikipedia architecture? Please.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidyeotb (talkcontribs)

Adding material that represents original research (See WP:NOR) and is unsourced personal opinion will be removed as vandalism. Alansohn (talk) 17:38, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
WP:NOR stated "Wikipedia does not publish original research or original thought" and did not stated it is vandalism". I understand where you coming from now, but please do not use strong word such as vandalize (guess that is why so many defaced your pages), unless you have seen the history of that person proven to be doing so deliverately and repeatedly. You know? It really hurting when you try to do good and someone just "accuse" you of the negative. I would be more thankful if you have shown me WP:NOR first and not use such strong word. Unconstructive??

In what way was my edit unconstructive? Tabasco sauce is a condiment. Simply because you do not like the substance of another person's edit, you are not given the right to autocratically remove such contributions. That a condiment is being used as an ingredient in a product attempting to claim legitimacy, I believe, is a very relevant point, as a more legitimate product would isolate the active ingredients in that condiment and include only those, it is a matter of questioning the seriousness of a product. Don't change something simply because you don't like it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.73.34.109 (talk) 23:44, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Clarification on your edit of "The Nitty Gritty (song)"

I had added a short paragraph on the meaning of "nitty-gritty", then you deleted it. There has been Web discussions about a non-documented idea about the origin of "nitty-gritty. I inserted this to clarify what "nitty-gritty" meant in this song. I did not understand your comment: "the meaning of the title is not meaningfully included". Had you meant that the deleted paragraph did not address the meaning of "nitty-gritty" in the title of this song in particular? Pete unseth (talk) 20:14, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Pete unseth, I have no idea what the author of the song meant by "nitty gritty" in the title of the song. Providing a dictionary definition of the term does not have any necessary connection to what it means in the song. If you were writing the article Nitty-gritty, it would belong there, but it doesn't belong in the article about the song, where it's WP:SYNTH. Alansohn (talk) 19:21, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Reverting removal of www

Hi there. I'm curious as to why you reverted on these two edits. You don't really provide any explanation as to why you reverted it. www is no longer needed in domain URLs under http specs and is considered archaic, but the main reason for removing them is to prevent wrapping of the URL in the infobox. Adding back the completely superfluous wwws does nothing to help the links but more importantly cause them to line wrap. Canterbury Tail talk 18:55, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

I put it back in places where it didn't need to be removed. Alansohn (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Those two instances now wrap on most browsers with the unnecessary www, which is why I removed them. Canterbury Tail talk 20:33, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Canterbury Tail, I've had no issue with wrapping in either article and I'm not sure how you've determined that this is an issue with most browsers. If it were an encyclopedia-wide defect, the www prefix would be prohibited, removed automatically by the template or systematically by a bot. The absence of all of this indicates that the issue is not a Wikipedia problem in general, but an issue with the way your screen and browser are set up. Alansohn (talk) 11:31, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I think you may have misunderstood the occasional problem here. I've checked it on multiple devices and browsers and in many instances on Chromium based browsers (Chrome on Windows (but not on iOS as that's actually Safari), Edge etc.) with default skin and font, the URL for these particular ones is wrapping at times due to the width of the infobox. It's just a pure factor of the length of the URL and not any kind of a special issue of the www itself. No one has come around and said that www is prohibited or needs to be automatically removed or it's something a bot should or shouldn't do, it's just purely that in some instances the text is too long and causes it to wrap sometimes that's all. Removing the www prevents this wrapping in these particular cases. It doesn't happen in Safari based browsers such as running on a Mac or iOS system (but it would if it was a single character longer it's an artifact of how some handle the fonts). There's no systemic issue here, or technical problem, just sometimes they're too long and occasionally wrap and dropping the unneeded www helps with that. I'm not sure why removing a piece of redundant information that improves the viewing experience for some users is such a big deal here that it needs to be reversed. Canterbury Tail talk 14:49, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Canterbury Tail, again your viewing experience does not match mine or those of millions of other readers. At best, you have addressed your own personal nit. Alansohn (talk) 19:19, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Okay, say that is true, what is the policy reason for reverting it? We've both been here a very very long time, we both know what we're doing but it comes across that you're just being dismissive and reverting because you're not seeing it in your setup at this time which is the same thing you're saying I'm doing. Canterbury Tail talk 19:29, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Canterbury Tail, it's a part of the URL and interferes with the purpose of the template to provide the URL and to allow that to be used for other purposes as described by the template's documentation. I cannot understand how you believe that violating this purpose advances the encyclopedia, but then again, as the expression goes "I say tomato and you say that letters should be arbitrarily removed from the word for no legitimate purpose other than it looks better in your browser on your computer with your settings". Alansohn (talk) 19:35, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
You don't need to keep pinging me. www is no longer a required part of a web address, it's a redundant archaic part of an old system that is no longer required. It was there to identify something as a web page, something that's since been superseded. Comparting it to me removing letters from tomato is apples to oranges and not even remotely an apt comparison. Domains are now just the main domain plus the extension, prefixes like www and others are subparts and www is now ignored (but still displayed if the user or source routing used it.) Anyway it's clear we aren't going to meet eye to eye. I was just trying to make things better for some users by removing the zero value part of the domain (for the domains that don't require the www, I would never remove it for old servers that aren't updated and do still require it) and that could be removed to tidy make some people display better. Dropping the www isn't undermining the template in any way or violating anything, even the template documentation utilizes URLs without the wwws, even for the same ones. Many infoboxes are now instructing users to drop the www due to this, but Infobox settlement doesn't do so at this time. Unfortunately Template:Nowrap doesn't really work. I guess wrapping is fine in those cases. I'll drop this discussion now for these pages. Canterbury Tail talk 20:30, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
The end of an unproductive discussion about what appear to be unproductive edits. Alansohn (talk) 21:03, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Well if you're going to be like that. Your edits were unproductive and added nothing, mine were trying to be helpful to some readers and not just what one person sees. Yours were just you didn't like it. Canterbury Tail talk 21:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
We have way too many www's in this encyclopedia and text for a URL rolling over onto two lines is a gigantic crisis. Keep up the pointless, purposeless edits. Alansohn (talk) 21:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
And you just keep reverting to your preference in a manner even more pointlessly. Canterbury Tail talk 21:43, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
There are way too many www's sitting out there to waste your precious time on chit-chat. Imagine the horror of readers seeing a URL split on two lines. You must keep up the work to make Wikipedia safe from this scourge! Alansohn (talk) 07:44, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

3RR warning

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at New York City shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Seasider53 (talk) 03:55, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Seasider53, message received. As you are also part of the discussion at the talk page, I hope that we can all reach a consensus that removal of this content is the problem here. Thanks for reaching out and for your participation. Alansohn (talk) 04:48, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2024 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2024 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close on 31 January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), and Frostly (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! Thank you for continuing to whip these two articles back into shape Alansohn, great job! Best, Castncoot (talk) 17:48, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Castncoot, thanks for the recognition. There's lots more to be done. It's a big city. Alansohn (talk) 18:00, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Category

Question, is there any particular reason why you disagree that the birth year category does get listed first, example at Al Barlas? Various pages you have created in the past contradict this, such as Ellen Park, Shama Haider, Bill Moen, etc, where all birth year categories are listed first. Tinton5 (talk) 06:45, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

  • Tinton5, they're different because the order makes no difference and I've yet to see a policy that requires any particular order. In even-numbered years, when a new batch of legislators take office, I'll create one article and use that to clone the others, with no particular attention to the order of categories for living people or year of birth. Alansohn (talk) 14:34, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Can’t they all be consistent though? That’s what I was initially trying to do. Tinton5 (talk) 17:28, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
The order is nearly random across the encyclopedia. There is no policy and there is no consistency. If there were a clear consensus that it should be only one way, then you'd be fixing something, but this isn't the case. Alansohn (talk) 23:24, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Point Pleasant

I can provide a source for when Johnny Sack mentions the condo in Season 4, that's no problem.

However I don't see how that is "trivial" under the category "In the Media". There are other TV shows mentioned in the category, so how is that not considered "trivial"? 200.88.232.180 (talk) 16:53, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

  • The TV series was named Point Pleasant. The skit was called "Point Pleasant Police Department" and was a recurring bit. The mention in The Sopranos, was just that, a mention that he owns a condo in Point Pleasant. Even with a source to back it up, it still appears to be a trivial connection that doesn't match the other two. Alansohn (talk) 18:06, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

New Jersey city categories

Hi @Alansohn:! I noticed you undid my changes to add NJ cities to the Cities in New Jersey category. I had a discussion with Aymatth2 on his talk page since he was the one who originally made the Cities in New Jersey a diffused category. He mentioned that it was added by accident and has made the category non-diffused. This is in line with the standard we set for all the other 49 states (cities in the US are listed under both the state and county-level categories). Just a heads up that I will be adding back all the cities. If this is a problem for any other reason, feel free to let me know. Aurangzebra (talk) 20:10, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

  • Aurangzebra, I had no idea about this discussion and there was no explanation in the edit summary. There are much easier ways to do this, and I may well add these categories while you're at it, as it applies to all of the state's 564 municipalities of all types, but of course there is no reason not to go ahead and do so. Alansohn (talk) 20:14, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Sounds good! Yea my apologies, should have left something in the edit summary. I started adding the category to cities before I realized the category was marked as diffused so I thought it would be a straightforward add. Got a few cities in before I realized so sorry for the confusion! Aurangzebra (talk) 20:16, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Aurangzebra, people get so confused by diffusing and non-diffusing categories under the best of circumstances, and I hadn't realized the change. I followed up on your thread you started with Aymatth2 to see about other municipal types in the state. Alansohn (talk) 20:20, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Aurangzebra, I used AWB and took care of all of the other cities, carefully skipping over the articles you had taken care of. Moving on to the other types of government. Alansohn (talk) 20:44, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! Aurangzebra (talk) 21:11, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Upper Pittsgrove School edit reverted

Hello, I noticed you reverted my edit back in December on the Wikipedia of Upper Pittsgrove School. Why did you do this? Thanks. Antny08 (talk) 13:29, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Antny08, to be honest, I'm not sure why I reverted this edit. The consensus has been to exclude assistant principals, but the person was shifted between schools; consensus has also been to exclude mailing addresses in the body of the article. The scrambling of the order of the infobox may have led me to miss the logo change, but you listed that in your edit summary; I reinserted the logo in a separate edit. I extend my apologies for my clear error. Alansohn (talk) 19:27, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
No worries at all, thank you for the help on that Wikipedia page, I used to go to that school :) Antny08 (talk) 20:25, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
Antny08, again my apologies. I hope the article does your alma mater justice, at least from a Wikipedia perspective. Alansohn (talk) 20:28, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! The longest quotes in references ever seen

What's the deal with that? The quote isn't even necessary at all; one could easily just click on the citation and read it. Or they could click on the article link to the person's bio and read it there. Why the overkill? Fred Zepelin (talk) 23:40, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

And check out WP:FOOTQUOTE. None of those conditions apply in those paragraphs; it's just unnecessary clutter. I admire your apparent dedication to all things NJ, but could it be that you're letting your ownership of all of your edits get in the way of collaborative editing? Fred Zepelin (talk) 23:44, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
Fred Zepelin, you beat me to it, but there is no better justification than WP:FOOTQUOTE, which states that "A footnote may also contain a relevant exact quotation from the source. This is especially helpful when the cited text is long or dense. A quotation allows readers to immediately identify the applicable portion of the reference." As two sentences seemed too much to bear -- one clearly indicating who is being described and the second associating him with the place -- I have eliminated the first sentence in the spirit of collaborative editing. I more than understand that there are people who just want to point at a reference by name and hope that readers will wade through the source to find the relevant text or assume that the desired source will be available in some other article. I prefer, for the benefit of all future editors and readers, to be explicit in enabling "... readers to immediately identify the applicable portion of the reference" and I treat that as a best practice in all of my editing. I can't force you or any other editor to include quotations when adding references, but I fail to see what the objection is to their inclusion. Alansohn (talk) 00:01, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
The cited source is not "long or dense". It's literally two paragraphs. Based on that, you don't need to include a quote at all, but if you insist, at least trim it to the 25 words that support the fact you need supported. Fred Zepelin (talk) 00:03, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Fred Zepelin, as you insist, please point me to the 25-word maximum policy. Alansohn (talk) 00:07, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
The policy actually says don't put in a quote unless the cited source is "long or dense", which it isn't, and there are several other possible conditions where a quote would be useful, none of which are met. Are you seriously going to fight about keeping in extraneous information that is completely unrelated to the relationship between the subject and the town(s) he's from? I thought that was really odd until I looked at this; I guess you've gotten better in the last 5 years but really, take a step back and look at what you're fighting about here. Fred Zepelin (talk) 00:10, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Fred Zepelin, there are three sentences I cited directly from WP:FOOTQUOTE: "A footnote may also contain a relevant exact quotation from the source. This is especially helpful when the cited text is long or dense. A quotation allows readers to immediately identify the applicable portion of the reference." Sentence one says quotations can be used; there is no possible alternative reading. Sentence three explains why it's useful to use them and the purpose it serves to include them. Sentence two does not say "don't put in a quote unless the cited source is 'long or dense'" as you falsely claim; it says that quotations are "especially helpful" in such cases.
This is exactly why I keep full sentences; it prevents con artists from misrepresenting what the source actually says by using sentence fragments in a deliberately deceptive manner.
It astonishes me that you are seriously engaging in a battle based on the complete and utter misrepresentation of the guidelines you claim to be enforcing. Please stop wasting any further of my time and refrain from leaving any further messages here. Alansohn (talk) 00:24, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Ocean County, New Jersey

That source that you keep on adding to that page is opinionated and it's original research, the same way you reverted all of the edits I made putting the rest of the counties in specific categories saying it was "original research" just because I have it a certain way. I don't know why you keep on removing the sources I cited and re-adding that source on those pages especially if the sources I added were more relevant to the pages. Those pages should have been left alone when I cited the sources to back it up.

I'm not reverting any of your other edits because i'm not trying to start another edit war but i'm just trying to understand why you think like this. MidAtlanticBaby (talk) 07:15, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

  • MidAtlanticBaby, when you edited the article for Union County, New Jersey here to say that "Union County is unique in that it extends across both North and Central Jersey", you didn;t add a source; you helpfully explained "Those are the boundaries of the municipalities and the regions the municipalities are located in tho … And I know they are". Basing an edit on what you "know" to be true is the very definition of WP:Original Research.
There is disagreement about which counties are parts of North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey; and there are opinions that there is no such thing as Central Jersey. In his statement about signing bill S3206 promoting Central Jersey tourism into law in August 2023, Governor Murphy says "The 'Central Jersey' region will be comprised of, at minimum, the counties of Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, and Somerset." The bill does not say that no other counties are included; it says that the four listed counties are "at minimum" part of Central Jersey.
My edit for Ocean County, New Jersey, says that it is considered part of Central Jersey but wasn't included as one of the four counties in the 2023 legislation; I used a reliable and verifiable source to say that it was included and another source from the same newspaper saying it wasn't one of the four included "at minimum" by the state; your edit removes all of those details and says that Ocean County is part of the Jersey Shore.
I'm not sure what that adds as the article already says in the first sentence that it's part of the Jersey Shore. The Jersey Shore runs north-south, while the North / Central / South slices run east-west. A county can be both part of the Jersey Shore AND part of North / Central / South Jersey. The question is why are you deleting that? Alansohn (talk) 12:07, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

Lack of clarity in board member counts on several New Jersey school district articles

I ran the error avoidance script I compiled in the past couple days in reverse to fix the 'comprised of' replacements within quotes that I accidentally made in my original replacement run, so most, if not all, are now back to how they were written in the source material.

Whether due to how the articles were automatically generated, changes to how individual districts are run since the creation of those articles, or a combination of both, I noticed that several New Jersey school district articles (such as Knowlton Township, Woodlynne, Brigantine, Pitman, Plumsted Township, New Hanover Township, and Magnolia school districts) listed board member counts that contradicted the figure stated in one of the sources given. As in most cases it listed 7 members versus the source's claim of 9, I'm guessing that while the board does have 9 members, this comprises 7 elected members and the two that those seven then appoint, with the source stating 9 being a database that doesn't take that into account. As I wasn't certain, I marked each with a contradictory tag until they can be reviewed for thoroughly, though if the boards in school districts of that type are indeed composed of 7 elected trustees and 2 appointed members, making that clearer would be beneficial. In the case of the Magnolia school district, the article had listed 5 despite the source again stating 9, so I'm not sure what happened in that case.

However, per the aforementioned inaccuracies, instances where number ranges are written like 'grades 10-12' instead of 'grades 10 to 12', and the outdated list of schools that was on the article for Trenton, New Jersey before I replaced it with an updated table, it seems that more effort should be put into ensuring that the hundreds of articles that you auto-generated are accurate, formatted properly, and remain up to date. It would certainly be more worthwhile than being deliberately contrarian about areas of focus of other Wikipedia editors. -CoolieCoolster (talk) 07:08, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

  • CoolieCoolster, sadly, many Wikipedia editors fall into the trap of believing that they are contributing to the encyclopedia if they make as many edits as possible. Once falling into this trap, many such editors become obsessed with trying to find incredibly trivial mass changes to pump up their "score", the number of edits they've made. In the grand scheme of things, such trivial edits as adjusting the length of a dash should be made by bots, as they require no brain power whatsover and are implemented by editors maniacally pressing the "save" button every few seconds. By your own count that you feel you have to share with the public at User:CoolieCoolster, more than 20% of your edits were devoted to the utterly trivial task of making a dash a little longer, something you claim to have done 9,000(!) times. While this mindless task seems like a gigantic waste of time to me, it does appear to actually be implementing a standard set in the Wikipedia Manual of Style.
Not so for "comprised of". There is no policy, guideline, manual of style or other Wikipedia mandate that prohibits its use. It's in widely common usage and is included in millions of direct quotations. The fact that you were so mindlessly obsessed with "fixing" this non-problem that you did not notice that you erroneously changed some 50-60 instances of "comprised of", sends a message that the bigger problem is the effort to solve this non-issue.
I do agree that there are issues where there are internal conflicts in the sources about the size of boards of education. Remarkably, until dealing with a mass of pointless mass edits that introduced huge numbers of errors, I was dealing with this exact issue by systematically reconciling the article for school districts with the contents of the latest state report, including the district description and the roster of officials included therein.
It is truly a bit rich to be lectured about editing practices by someone with a fetish for changing dash sizes a few hundred times per hour. In the future, when you make other equally mechanical mass edits, it would certainly be worthwhile on your part to make sure that you aren't screwing up articles.
I'm sure that there's some equally pointless effort to "correct" split infinitives or dangling participles; maybe that could be your path to shameless self promotion in the path followed by too many other such users. Alansohn (talk) 12:02, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
I'm not sure why you feel the need to criticize other editors for their preferred tasks, especially in the case of tasks such as en dash correction where the Manual of Style leaves no ambiguity as to what is or isn't correct. Whereas the commonality of that issue is a result of the en dash's absence from keyboards, the frequency at which 'comprised of' is used is a result of the obscurity of its opposing definitions, which, whether or not one categorizes as a grammatical error, can be easily disambiguated with an unambiguous synonymous term.
As I mentioned, while my edits on April 22 did in several cases replace quoted instances of comprised of in references, I fixed most remaining instances following your comment yesterday by reversing the negative lookback formula I compiled to prevent such errors in more recent edits:
(?:(?:(?:through a Board of Education|\)|...). The [bB]oard|The Township Committee|the Board of School Estimate, which|(?:operates under the Township Committee form of|form of municipal) government and|(?:The|Our) Board of Education|government. It) is |governed by an elected Board of Education )composed of ([0-9]{1,3}|one|two|three|four|five|six|seven|eight|nine|ten|eleven|twelve) members?
While I wouldn't have tried mass-replacing instances of 'comprised of' in regular articles, as I at times wouldn't be able to replace it with an equivalent phrase accurately, the formulaic means by which these articles were written means that each instance was replaced with a fitting alternative based on context wording. When means of error prevention as listed above are included in the process, it is a relatively consistent means of making intended replacement edits.
If any given grammatical or punctuation error were confined to one article, I'd be glad to fix them all with one edit and be done with it, but as they are instead spread out across hundreds or thousands of articles, the only means of fixing them without wasting a substantial amount of time is coming up with a script capable of replacing erroneous uses while leaving legitimate uses as they are. As with any process, it takes a few broken eggs to make an omelette, but after some fine tuning it works well. In the case of any such replacement process, if I'm told that some of my edits have been erroneous, I use the same process to go back and fix those errors. In any case, there are clearly more instances of dashes needing fixed than there are New Jersey related articles using 'comprised of' in prose, so for now I'll focus my efforts on less controversial error resolution. However, given that you have a page opposing what I can only assume was Giraffedata's attempts to fix instances of 'comprised of' in New Jersey related articles, is important to note that regardless of who it is that makes such an edit, having created the articles doesn't grant you any more say in regards to edits of prose (versus those that erroneously edit quotes) than any other editor. -CoolieCoolster (talk) 21:57, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
CoolieCoolster, keep up the work on those dashes. You have the Manual of Style to back you up.
Not so much for "comprised of". Merriam-Webster's definition not only makes the usage clear, but provides a number of sources from major newspapers and publications from the past week. I can provide thousands upon thousands of official governmental sources and reliable and verifiable sources showing that the usage is standard. Trying to "fix" the problem of usages of "comprised of" is as pointless as trying to prevent sentences ending with prepositions or boldly fixing split infinitives. If you make an omelet, you have to break eggs; you broke more than 50 articles in order to accomplish nothing meaningful and only fixed the problem because you had been caught, in most cases a week after the dozens of errors had been made.
The worst part of breaking 50 articles is that you obviously have not been reviewing your work. When you're too busy maniacally pressing enter and not checking your work, mistakes will inevitably multiply. This edit to the Vineland Public Schools broke a direct quote and was one of 23 edits you made in that same minute (see here for the ballpark of that edit). Please see WP:AWBRULES, which apply to all such bot-like editing, which states that "You are responsible for every edit made. You are expected to review every edit, just as if you were making an edit using Wikipedia's edit form when editing by hand. Do not sacrifice quality for speed, and review all changes before saving."
You cannot possibly have reviewed the finished product of each and every edit when you're spending less than three seconds per edit. Please accept your responsibility to observe policy. Alansohn (talk) 22:45, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Location mapping of prominent NJ cities/munucipalities in North America

Hi Alansohn! How about a compromise regarding location pushpin-mapping Atlantic City, Princeton, and Trenton onto North American maps, if not Earth maps? For example, Quebecois people may know that New Jersey is on the East Coast of the U.S., but they might still like to get a better handle on and context as to where, for example, Atlantic City is located relative to their own location, when they want to travel there. Seems like a pretty innocuous and potentially beneficial addition. All three of these locations are relatively cosmopolitan, and two of the three actually have commercial flights which may at some point reach Canada. What do you think? Best, Castncoot (talk) 15:51, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

I don't see a reply here. I would like to restore North American pushpin maps on the articles of the three aforementioned locations, but only if you will not intend to revert them, in which case I will hold off. If on the other hand I see no objection from you here for a couple of days, I'm going to interpret that as a signal that you would not be thrilled with these edits but will nevertheless tolerate them and let them stand. Best, Castncoot (talk) 04:17, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
Castncoot, all of these cities are in the United States, a fairly well-known country. Many people in North America on Earth have heard of it and know where it's located. Even in articles for cities that are even more cosmopolitan than Princeton and Atlantic City, such as New York City, don't specify their location in the continent or planet. It's simply not needed for any purpose to provide any more context than location in the United States. Alansohn (talk) 04:30, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
NYC does, but that's besides the point Alansohn. It's a nice additional amenity to have at one's fingertips, just like, for example, mentioning the change in population between 2000 and 2010 in the lede, when it is readily found in the demographics section in the population history table by decade. If you would revert this innocuous edit, then I'm not going to add it. I'd appreciate knowing though, thanks. Castncoot (talk) 05:31, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
So my hope is that you may have warmed up to my proposed edits above, regarding the North American pushpin maps in the aforementioned articles. I'm planning to add these edits tomorrow if you don't tell me in advance that you would plan to revert them. I wouldn't be in the least offended if you tell me in advance that you would plan on reverting them, in which case I would avoid posting these edits in the first place, in order to avoid an unpleasant reversion after the fact. Best, Castncoot (talk) 01:11, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
Castncoot, inclusion of maps of North America or Earth is utterly ludicrous. Any person who can access Wikipedia for an article about any place in New Jersey will be familiar with the United States. Anyone who doesn't know where the United States is on the planet Earth can dig deeper. Without broader consensus to add these maps for North America, Earth of the Solar System, they should not be added. Please don't add them without seeking that consensus, say on WP:USCITY or anywhere else. Alansohn (talk) 03:58, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
Alansohn, I respectfully disagree. There's something known as nuance and context, where one attribute added to one NJ municipal article would not belong in another NJ municipal article due to inherent differences between the municipalities themselves. I've been asking you to respond for ample time now and you chose not to do so until after the fact. I'm not going to add any further entries, as no other NJ municipalities are notable enough to warrant them; but I would respectfully ask you not to revert anything already done, as I had courteously asked you in the paragraphs above. Castncoot (talk) 04:17, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
Castncoot, I really don't know what to say anymore, as it's very hard to take any of this seriously. I'm not sure why Edison needs the "nuance and context" of its location on the planet, but Woodbridge Township or Perth Amboy (or any other place in New Jersey) does not. For that matter, I can't understand why any place would need the continent or planet for identification purposes, particularly in a country as well known as the United States. This entire exercise appears nonsensical in the kindest possible interpretation, and these changes have been reverted to the status quo ante. In the absence of genuine consensus for this absurdity, I suggest that maps of continent and / or planet be omitted and that any further time not be wasted discussing this matter or trying to add them without the necessary consensus. Alansohn (talk) 04:27, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
Do you travel much outside the United States? I travel all over the world frequently, and I think you're quite far from the reality of international geographical perception. What makes Edison or Lakewood more worthy of global context than Woodbridge or Brick is simply that the former two have highly prominent ethnic and/or religious communities that are internationally famous, while the latter two communities do not. It's that straightforward. Castncoot (talk) 04:37, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Continued apology for unsourced edit

Thanks for reverting the edit on the article about May's Landing, New Jersey. I was not thinking straight about the A-B-C-D or A-B pattern at all. (May's Landing being a part of this county of the region of the state in the country which is involved with the statistical area with other cities). Unique Ocean County Nomenclature

I thought that it would be highly notable to note that Ocean County, New Jersey is the only U.S. county named Ocean specifically because this is so incredibly surprising, given the geographical ubiquity of the word “ocean”; one might surely expect that if an Ocean County, New Jersey exists, then there most definitely must be an Ocean County elsewhere in the U.S., perhaps in Florida or California or Hawaii, or even in Rhode Island (the “Ocean State”). On the other hand, one might simply yawn to read that there is only one Bergen or Passaic County in the United States, because those are not common terms to begin with. Do you not agree? I know that uniformity on Wikipedia is usually beneficial, but when something stands out of the ordinary, I believe that the benefit of highlighting this outweighs the uniformity argument. Best, Castncoot (talk) 00:28, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

  • Castncoot, Your edits to the article makes the claim that Ocean County, New Jersey, is the only county named "Ocean County". The source you used provides census data for Ocean County and has a note in the reference that says "Note: the only U.S. county named Ocean which populates", but the source does not say that. Based on my reading of Index of U.S. counties, almost half of New Jersey's 21 counties are unique, including Ocean, as well as Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Hudson, Hunterdon, Monmouth, Passaic, Salem. The non-unique are Camden (4 nationwide), Cumberland (8), Essex (5), Gloucester (2), Mercer (8), Middlesex (4), Morris (3) Somerset (4), Sussex (3), Union (17) and Warren (14). I'm not sure how anyone can figure out that some county names are unique and the uniqueness is counterintuitive for some but that the uniqueness of others is obvious.
Looking nationwide, if I read the Index of U.S. counties article correctly, 422 of the 1,936 county names have multiple counties with the same name, but the other 1,514 names are unique. The overwhelming majority (about 78%) are unique nationwide, and it appears that this unique name characteristic is a rather ordinary trait of most counties. The counterintuitive nature of Ocean County being unique isn't sourced and the details may be true, but doesn't appear to be worth mentioning. Alansohn (talk) 01:43, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

About recent edit in the article Atlantic City, New Jersey

Please explain why you reverted my edit in the article for Atlantic City, New Jersey. On 18 October 2024, I edited the formatting for one citation, so it fits the template for citing websites (Template:Cite web). I also added the author's name from the cited article. Reverting my edit made it worse, at least since you removed the author's name. 66.215.184.32 (talk) 12:30, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

This article is in a bunch of NJ sportspeople categories. He isn't an athlete, but a activist (Labor leaders are considered activists) and lawyer. Yes he is categorized this Category:Major League Baseball Players Association executive directors but dig down into the categories underneath is nothing comes up Sportspeople. So I am going to remove/recategorize the NJ sportspeople categories.Lost in Quebec (talk) 20:48, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
