Message from WikiProject Wikify

A message from WikiProject Wikify!

Thanks for participating in the October 2010 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive! We made significant progress, wikifying hundreds of articles. However, the backlog still needs a large amount of effort--discussions about the next drive (in December) are underway. Until then, happy editing!

My change on the turducken page was to add back something that was in the history several years ago. A name for the 17 bird feast is fun to have. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.106.185.1 (talk) 23:35, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Sockpuppet fun

Just noticed your tagging of 165.155.192.79. Given his recent contributions were basically wandering from talkpage to talkpage declaring who he was, I reasoned that he's out looking for attention. I kinda decided consciously not to tag the IP's talk page just because that's giving him the attention he was asking for - I felt it was far better to just revert all his posts and block him for generic vandalism, hence denying recognition. Obviously it's no big deal, I just thought I'd let you know my thoughts. :) ~ mazca talk 12:33, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

G5

I'll look into it and bat the dust off an old friend if the pages were created in violation of the block. Mass taggings, especially those announced at ANI, only serve to attract attention, something of which we should be keen to starve certain people of. Feel free to email me if you want, but I doubt anything productive will come from further on-wiki discussion. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:48, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

The thread disappeared just before I got to comment. You have my full support, please undo everything. I see that only some 100 latest of the edits and moves (Special:Contributions/Schwyz) have been reverted, there are still about a thousand more from the last week before he got blocked. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 23:08, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Google Voice

Hi. I see you've had some involvement with Google Voice. I've had one more go but to be honest I am getting bored/fed up, and I don't think the IP editor is interested in anything much other than the urgency of getting their PoV across, so I think I will probably get depressed and walk away now. Just thought you might like to know in case you are still interested. Thanks and best wishes, DBaK (talk) 23:46, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I saw your warnings to the IP and I am worried about BLP issues -- please take a look at WP:BLPEDIT. Maybe it would be good to get some help at Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard in sorting this out. If you are warning the actual subject of the article, that might create problems for you, that person and/or Wikipedia. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 02:32, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Web Design? Technician?

Hiya Access Denied! I notice you don't seem to like Internet Explorer. I for one love hate love hate it. As a web designer, I of course "really really dislike" it. As a technician inundated with malware related repairs due to infections that used IE, .NET and/or ActiveX as attack vectors; I kinda like it. :-) Best, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 23:02, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

LoL! That's definitely been my feeling this week. Set up a blog and ran into just how much of a nightmare it would be to make it even semi-functional (lotsa added features and widgets) under IE6. At least I've got it working on newer ones. So... I opted for a big splash screen (for IE6 users) telling them to get a better browser. :-) ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 23:18, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
I know, I'm planning on a new userpage design and I'll probably have to spend an extra hour making backup code for IE (I'm using fancy stuff like multilayered box shadows and radial gradients) and another 3 hours rewriting the code for each variant of the vendor codes. WHEN. WILL. CSS3. BE. PUT. INTO. EFFECT. Access Deniedtalk to me 00:02, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
At this rate, I think I'd have a better chance of winning the lottery without buying a ticket than we have a chance of Microsoft actually implementing CSS3 to standards. ;-)
I'm sadly finding more and more WordPress themes (and more neat code of my own for my custom sites) that simply don't work properly on some or all versions of IE. ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 00:14, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Oh, and whoever designed the -webkit-gradient(radial... should be fired from their job. That code is impossible to work with. Access Deniedtalk to me 00:22, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure IE9 actually implements CSS3 pretty well. (I am a Firefox fan, but I test my web pages with other browsers to see if they work right.) If you're trying to make a user page, your use of CSS is pretty limited, as you can only add CSS to style attributes of HTML tags; I think the only way of "making backup code for IE" is by stuffing multiple CSS rules into the same HTML element, as you cannot do JavaScript detection or conditional comments. Nice to see another web designer! :) MC10 (TCGBL) 16:44, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Your RfA

I wish you luck in your RfA. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:36, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi AD. I'm sorry to say I'd suggest withdrawal. One thing about being an admin is judging consensus, and here it's clearly against your request at this time. I'm not sure you're likely to get much more useful feedback and I certainly would not like to see you too discouraged by the experience. Pedro :  Chat  21:10, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I'm with Pedro on this one. I think it's time for you to pull out. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 01:21, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm busy right now in real life; I'm going withdraw in a few hours. I was also rather shocked that an editor suggested redirecting the page to WQA. Access Deniedtalk to me 01:30, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Sorry it didn't work out for you this time—you should definitely take the feedback into account, as it will help you with both your next RfA and your overall endeavors on Wikipedia! Have you considered working on articles? It's always good to diversify your contributions to prevent burnout. —Deckiller (t-c-l) 02:42, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Well that didn't go exactly as planned...
I'm sorry that your RfA didn't work out that well. You're clearly a good editor, and you didn't deserve to get slaughtered so unceremoniously. RfA tends to pile on a disproportionate amount of negative energy as to what is required. That being said, the community has spoken. I've prepared an essay offering advice on second RfAs. Please read it, and see if you find it helpful. I think that one day, you'll make a good admin. This will give you something to focus on in the mean time. Best wishes for the future, Sven Manguard Talk 04:25, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Good luck next time, given a few article edits, possibly a GA or 2 and I'm sure all those article centred !voters will be satisfied! Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 6:47pm • 07:47, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
I hope so, but I still can't believe someone suggested redirecting the RFA to WQA- that editor has over 100000 edits and should now better. And at this rate it'll take all night to spread the thank spam because my stupid iPhone is randomly reloading the RFA page every time I jump away from it which makes it take forever to go to each talk page link and substitute the thankspam template. :( Access Deniedtalk to me 07:52, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
With a bit more time and experience, I can see you being a successful RfA candidate. There are often people who go over the top in their opposes, so don't take the more extreme ones to heart - just see it as a test of how you'd handle the kind of shit that you'd have to face as an admin ;-) -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:02, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Hiya, don't forget the "I've got every toolbar known to man" crowd. I've got none, and 1024x768... just squeeks in. Dunno how concerned you were, but figured I'd mention it just in case. Best, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI TALK/CNTRB 04:02, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Question

How would I get my new userpage background to cover my whole user page, it's too narrow? Inka888 05:42, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Thank you so much. Still not very good with coding. Inka888 05:52, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi there and.... Congratulations for making wikipedia a better place for the users. Can you revamp user:sulmues please? I don't need any userboxes, just see if you can make any improvements. Cheers. --Sulmuesi (talk) 19:57, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Will do. Busy in real life so might be a little while, but I'll make sure to get it done. (PS: what web browser and version do you use, I need to know before I start the redesign?) Access Deniedtalk to me 20:04, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Any chance you could tell me what this "advanced HTML code" and "transparent window for images" code is? I like code :P. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 22:56, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Basically, I've found a way to use radial gradients to create a sort of "image mask" on top of an image to create a fade effect around the edges. (of course, not on IE, but who cares) Access Deniedtalk to me 06:04, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Does this work on WP or is the html blocked? I know what you're talking about but I'd like to know if it's possible on here (and I'm sure IE's filter properties can do something similar, but they're blocked on WP). /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 21:35, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
I have webkit radial gradient on my userpage, and I'm fairly sure that -moz-radial-gradient isn't blocked either. Access Deniedtalk to me 21:39, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Oh, so that's why it was a blank box for me :P You should really add the Firefox-compatible code to your userpage. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 00:55, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

I hate to barge in on this, but I highly think that this would not be a good idea this fast after a first attempt. Maybe in about 3-5 months this would be ok, but for certain not right now. You'll get a bunch of insta-opposes if you run again this quickly after a failed attempt, trust me. Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. 16:56, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
I'm going to have to second that, unfortunately. You just failed your first RfA, and if you ran again, you would come across as power hungry, so to speak. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 17:00, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Uhh, no thanks. Access Deniedtalk to me 18:16, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi, Access Denied. I think you will make a wonderful administrator some day. Your technical knowledge about range blocks and wiki markup are wonderful tools that already are greatly appreciated. Please please run again in six months or a year, and make sure you study up on what gets people passed and get those requirements fulfilled in the meantime to optimise your chances of success. Best wishes, --Diannaa (Talk) 18:58, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Sven Manguard Talk 19:09, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks everyone. I think I'll run in about nine months. By then I'll hopefully have some decent content work along with more vandal fighting, but right now I've been so busy dealing with sockpuppets that I don't have much time (also very busy in real life) but I WILL get to some content creation when I have the time.
