Chinese Labour Corps
Hi, I received a message from BracketBot that it had detected that my edit to Chinese Labour Corps may have broken syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. I cannot detect the problem. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 18:45, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
The members of the CLC who died were classified as war casualties and were buried in about 40 French and Belgian graveyards in the North of France, with a total of about 2000 tombs and a few tombs in one cemetery in Belgium).

Two brackets in a single note.
Hello, I've just received a message I'm not sure I understand well... English is not my native tongue and I just wanted to expand a note. As notes have opening and closing brackets set automatically, and as I needed two sets of brackets I thought it was smart to only close the first one and only open the second one, like this :
| title3 = Love Is All Around | note3 = Reg Presley) (live at Hook End
In order to get this :
3. "Love Is All Around" (Reg Presley) (live at Hook End)
Sorry if I did something wrong, I will happily correct if needed.
Megatof (talk) 17:44, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
| note7 = Charles Trenet/Jack Lawrence) (live at Hook End)
- You added an extra ")" at the end. 930913(Congratulate) 17:49, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

editing Baltimore County and several Baltimore history/biography/gov't. entries
Working on several general editing for historical, political, geographical accuracy by a person who is well "on the ground" and very acquianted with subjects which I occasionally choose to work on. Here I am in process and have some more to do -- so sort a "work in progress" a bit at a time. Will be glad to register and re-read some procedures, standards etc. Thanks for advice. Always appreciate concept, philospohy and opportunities for expanded learning and using people's experiences, & knowledge to catalog in a organized encyclopedic fashion and items of great detail too minor for the usual previous incarnations such as Encyclopedia Americana, Britannica, alamanaca or some reference books. Just received a perplexing message reading, in part, "your edit to Perspectives of New Music may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s." I see no modifications of any "()"s in my edit, and even if I had, cannot understand what sort of "syntax" this might conceivably break.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 05:09, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
* Boykan, Martin. 2012. Untitled interview with Rachel S. Vandagriff. ''Perspectives of New Music'' 50, nos. 1 and 2 (Winter–Summer): 130–35)

- If you think that is "breaking syntax", then heaven help you if you ever look at the contents of that journal. Bracketbot message
Suggest you add in the message Brackbot leaves on talk pages something like... I have automatically detected that your edit to Philip may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s or the problem was present before you edited the article.
You are going to get alot of messages like the above saying I didn't edit any brackets.
Also, congrats on getting approval. I'm hoping this will cut down my work. Keep up the good work. Bgwhite (talk) 05:47, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- @Bgwhite: Thanks. I think the problem with that, is that too many people will just assume that and won't take it up any further. It's a rather rare case, ideally getting rarer as older ones are fixed, and newer ones prevented.
- You'll see that everyone above, excepting you, has edited the brackets they were notified for.
- As for the multitudes of messages, I was thinking of getting some talk page stalkers. I don't suppose you'd like to become one? 930913(Congratulate) 06:17, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Bracketbot said I removed }} "illegally" in this edit. It was a valid edit. I've been removing alot of stray brackets the past few days and this is the first notice I've received. Bgwhite (talk) 17:54, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not sure where you're quoting from. It was a valid edit, however because you changed the brackets in your edit, and you left it unbalanced, it notified you.
- On October 2011, at the German TV-channel ZDF, one of the public channels in Germany. Yamashita's Comments on radiation was broadcasted].

- You have it wrong... I never touched "Yamashita's Comments on radiation was broadcasted]." It was broken before I got there and was still broken when I left.
- I removed "}}" from the article. There should not have been any "]" or "}}" added as there was no "[" or "{{" before it. I didn't leave it unbalanced. There should be no brackets at the end of “It is an endurance contest between me and people in Fukushima”... which is the section I edited.
- So your bot sent a message to me for something I didn't touch. The bot should only be working on what I edited and not what I didn't edit. Bgwhite (talk) 18:27, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'll talk you through the process so you know why it notified you.
- It looks at your edit diff [2]
- It counts the number of each bracket and sees that you have removed two "}}". (Yes, you were correct in doing so, but it cannot see that from the edit view.)
- It watches to see if this changes for five minutes.
- It fetches the whole article and counts the bracket again.
- It notices that there is an extra "]" as I highlighted above and as such determines that the brackets in the article have not been fixed.
- It notifies you that you may have broken the syntax (admittedly incorrectly about the "}}") in the article, because it's not fixed.
- The bot saw you fixing brackets, and tried to tell you that there were still fixes to be made to your edit.
- If you fix brackets regularly, you may find this bot helpful in identifying articles that you thought you had fixed, but missed something. 930913(Congratulate) 20:57, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

- Does the bot check for double brackets for broken syntax.. ie {{ and [[ or is just single brackets? Bgwhite (talk) 00:09, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- It counts the number of each type of open bracket, subtracts the number of the respective close brackets and sees if it changes from all 0s to something else. For more information, check User:BracketBot 930913(Congratulate) 01:00, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

I was notified by your bot that I may have broken the syntax with my edit. I didn't. I fixed it. By looking at your talk page, it seems that this is a common incident. Perhaps you should rethink this function of your bot, since many times when a change is made to two }}
's, it is to fix the syntax, not break it. If the bot sends a notification every time an edit like this is made, it could lead to many unneeded messages. Best of luck, — JJJ (say hello) 14:11, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
- Upon further examination, I see that the bot checks for balancing of braces. I wonder why my edit triggered it? We had
{{Reflist|refs= ...
and I added the}}
to the end. So maybe one of the citations in the section had uneven brackets? Leave me a talkback message at my talk page. — JJJ (say hello) 14:21, 8 May 2013 (UTC)<ref name=NORAD1958B>NORAD/CONAD Historical Summary: July-December 1958 "''In September 1956, CONAD proposed to the JCS the collocation of the Missile Master and the Air Force's AN/GPA-37 in ten areas. On 19 December 1958, NORAD directed that the experimental tests be carried out with the abbreviated Missile Master at Fort Banks.''"}}</ref>
- @TheJJJunk: If you look carefully, you'll notice that the reflist was closed (by simple bracket counting). Indeed it is not parsed a such, so while your edit did fix the list, it left these two '}}' which the bot picked up on.
- It's rare for the bot to pick up on fixes, but if you don't fix everything, the bot will notify you. If it gets annoying, you can opt out, but if you don't, the bot will tell you when you thought you fixed an article but missed something. 930913(Congratulate) 16:18, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

You can make bots only so clever. this would have faked out a person. I moved an entire sentence up in the article.
I don't see how the bots are as good as they are, but the notice is incorrect. The bot re-synched on "especially" which was taken out of context at that point, I believe. So the removal of the "(" was done correctly. I hope. Student7 (talk) 00:48, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Comment and question: I was informed that I had broken the sytax of the page Awan (tribe). However, my adding of the brackets was simply to fix an existing, broken box (the fix seemed successful). Is it feasible for BracketBot to detect when an existing box is broken (or at least in the case where there's only one lot of double brackets) and is just being fixed (and hence not send a message to users in this case)?
Just to clarify, the original box only started with a double bracket, there was no double bracket at the end.

I also link the names of the characters of the episodes page to the characters page, so that the link will go straight to the name instead of the top of the page. When I tried a few links (of the names of the characters), it did the trick, nothing bad happened.
All I am trying to do is to be able to link the characters' names from the episodes page to the characters page, and so far I have made success.

About to shut the bot off and then
I was just about to opt out with a snarl about another dumb bot. The messages were cryptic and, thought obviously about unpaired symbols, gave almost nothing about finding the things. Then, (new?) there was a "Show" option and bingo! Think I'll let it run as, particularly down in those cite templates those symbols can be a mess. Showing in context, enough of a string to locate is helpful. Palmeira (talk) 17:04, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes the "Show" option is new. It was added based on feedback. The bot was only turned on this week, so it would be natural to find some "kinks". "Dumb bot", Pffft. Majority of bots are smarter than most editors, me included. :) Bgwhite (talk) 17:12, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: Hello BracketBot.
I noticed that you mentioned possible problems 'breakings of syntax' with pairs of '<', but some of these '<' were inside a <ma th></ma th> pair, where the syntax is the TeX syntax for mathematical formulas (and not HTML!), and where it is most likely to find the sign '<' used for math. inequalities. It would be painful to use (if it only exists) a TeX substitute equivalent to the HTML '< ;'. Would it be possible to educate the Bot to this fact?

Bdmy (talk) 08:22, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- @Bdmy: Yes, ignoring the contents of certain markup is currently a priority. However, you have a right-open interval outside of a math tag, the introduction or changing of which would also trigger the Bot. I'm wondering how to account for that. 930913(Congratulate) 13:12, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

I added the final } to the table because the table was spilling into the next section of the page. Also, the sources for this table were listed above the table itself, which breaks this page's formatting protocol in that they should be below the table. Now it's OK.

- You did indeed fix one problem, but that wasn't what the bot meant: There was an entirely unrelated surplus parenthesis. I removed it. A930913 will have to decide whether this is a false positive or whether the message could be made more helpful. Huon (talk) 23:00, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
- It's a positive false positive? It's a bit of an edge case, though it is for this reason that you "may have broken the syntax". Hopefully, with the new highlighting of remaining problems, it will be easier to understand what's left to fix. 930913(Congratulate) 14:35, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

- There were two issues, a missing parenthesis (which I fixed) and the "New York > Westchester > Greenburgh > District 0072 > 30" footnote. Since ">" may be a part of HTML tags, BrackenBot checks whether there are as many "<" as ">" in an edit - a mismatch may indicate broken tags. This is a false positive. Huon (talk) 18:26, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Very annoying bot!
I have been expanding Alasinga Perumal and this expansion work will go on for next 7—8 hours until it becomes a full length article. It is very annoying to get a warning like this: within 5-6 minutes of an edit, because I have not closed a bracket. I am opting out! Dablink bot also gives notices, but, it waits for sometime/days before doing it, It seems your bot is just over-excited to slap editors with cookie-cutter warnings! --09:10, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hey Tito, boy twice in one day we meet. I think you do have a semi-valid point. On one hand, it is nice to get a warning just after you edit an article. There is more of a chance a person will correct the article. But having a wait period too short can get annoying.
- A930913, is it possible or a good idea to increase the wait period to 10 minutes? But make sure User:Titodutta has a wait period of 1 one minute and gets a message every minute until the problem is fixed. :) Bgwhite (talk) 04:54, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- It's certainly a consideration to make. The idea is to catch editors in the same session they make the mistake in, as this should make it much easier to work out what needs fixing.
- On a side note, I try to complete as much as I can in one edit, and try to leave the page in a usable state between edits. Naturally I think that is the better way, but each to their own 930913(Congratulate) 22:42, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

- I'd say those are typos by the uploader; the images should probably be named "File:James Craig Annan (Scottish) - Frau Mathasius - Google Art Project.jpg" and so on. I don't see how the bot could determine whether a single parenthesis within a file name is an error or not, and the false positives may be less of a problem than the issues truly mismatched brackets in (or near) file names may cause. Maybe A930913 has a better idea on how to handle this. Huon (talk) 20:29, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

New BracketBot Question
BracketBot says that it makes approximately 10 edits per hour. Does that mean that it runs continuously and finds approximately 10 violations in an hour? How does the bot know what articles to review? Robert McClenon (talk) 01:03, 16 May 2013 (UTC) I don't see any spelling differences, so that my American English should not be an issue. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:03, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
- 10 edits per hour is approximate. It is higher during prime editing hours. Bot checks all edits being made and sees if there is a bracket problem. If there is a problem it waits a few minutes in hopes the editor corrected the problem with a subsequent edit. If not, it sends out a report. It only checks brackets and not spelling. Thank you for your auto-message.
1. I've been trying to show, within a source note, the name of the writer of the source, and linking it to an on-line webpage about/from him. It is more than likely that I have got it wrong, although the result in the source note is actually now precisely the result I was after. That feels like progress.
2. As a SECOND attampt, I wanted to be able to include a link to the actual source web page WITHOUT showing the entire URL (which is quite long) in the same source note. It really just needs the name of the publication (here "Die Zeit") which can be clicked on, taking the reader back to the article on web page that I've been trying to cite. I hadn't succeeded in figuring out how to do this before I got a flash that I had a message, from you (so I switched to reading it and (here) reacting). So it's a work - or at least a hope - in progress. But if you can spell out in idiot proof terms how I could do that as well, my future contributions would be tidier and I would be happier.
As presumably you have ways of knowing, the entry in question is this one.
Regards Charles01 (talk) 05:49, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
- I have tidied up the references, mainly by removing the links to Die Zeit's author profile (that should be linked from the main Die Zeit article anyway), by using the quote= parameter, and by switching from the generic {{cite web}} templates to the more specific {{cite news}} and {{cite journal}}. That said, the article suffers from severe original research problems. For example, "Even now, the Spiegel article of 14 December 1960 is strangely shrill, partisan, and out of line with the dry tone that characterised most serious business reporting at the time." - says who? Certainly not the Spiegel article itself, which was the source cited for this statement. That should be discussed on the article's own talk page, though. Regarding the bot's warning, your attempt to link to the author's profile lacked one bracket; that summoned the bot. Huon (talk) 19:29, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Thanks, BracketBot (talk) 00:39, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
I don't understand that the " 2 "[]"s refers to: could you please point to it more specifically?
With apologies for the trouble - Aboudaqn (talk) 02:19, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- The 2 "[]" here refer to the square brackets at the beginning of "Art Institute of Chicago" that weren't matched by the corresponding brackets at the end. The List of unpaired brackets would have shown the mismatched brackets in bold red. Fixed. Huon (talk) 02:29, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

- Yes, that's what summoned the bot. In the "List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page" on your talk page the bot highlights what it perceives as a possible problem, here the parenthesis in "(1928-". I'd say that's a typo in the source; it clearly should be "(1928- )" - but there's nothing we can do about that. Huon (talk) 17:51, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

- The bot commented on the parenthesis you fixed later with this edit - the bot's message predates the repair. Nothing else needs to be done about that. Some general advice would be to format the footnotes via templates such as {{cite web}} or {{cite news}} - see WP:Referencing for beginnners on how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes. Greetings-
I'm one of the older editors and there's no question I need to see about glasses! With that said, I love the bracket bot idea, but after carefully looking over my edits both for Geraint Watkins and Andy Fairweather Low, I can't find my mistakes. Am I missing some way to approach the problem from your bot's notes on my talk page? It shows the article in question, and your bot complaint/commendation page here. Is it possible I fixed my own error on Low's article, and another editor fixed the error on Watkins' page after your bot noted the problem? Please let me know on my talk page and introduce the person behind the bot! :) I find work is best when we editors network together, and I've been doing this work for years now, so..? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 15:24, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Christopher 04:08, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- See WP:Referencing for beginners on how to add references. In particular, to re-use the same reference multiple times, you have to name it once: <ref name="concert">Footnote text</ref> Afterwards you can refer to it by name: <ref name="concert" /> Don't forget the slash at the end or things will be badly misinterpreted and parts of the article text may vanish!
- However, Holcroft's book itself and bookshop websites are not the reliable sources Wikipedia content should be based on; I have reverted the edit. This seems a general problem for the article; it desperately needs third-party sources such as newspaper articles about Holcroft or reviews of his works published in literary journals. I saw that you signed "Christopher"; if you are Christopher Holcroft, you may also want to read our guideline on conflicts of interest; editing articles about yourself is strongly discouraged.
