The old pool
[edit]I'm sure I read somewhere that the original pool was never destroyed, but lies beneath the flooring at Wembley Arena. Anyone got a source for this? --Dweller (talk) 10:15, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
YES - the pool is still there, I've seen it! EmilyWiki (talk) 22:40, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Name of Wembly Arena
[edit]I seem to recall that in the 1950s when I lived in Harrow the name was "Empire Pool and Sports Arena" Is anyone else under this impression. Laurence Fielding 95.150.118.173 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:07, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
You're right, it's even mentioned on the official website of SSE Arena Wembley. I'll add it to the article and source it.--MetrolandNW (talk) 12:46, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
Move to The SSE Arena, Wembley
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: not moved. This is mostly a procedural close, as a page move was done after this discussion and promptly reverted. It seems that in the interest of page stability, the new unspoken consensus is to leave the article name as is and add its new name in bold in the lede. (non-admin closure) Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 02:53, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi all - Wembley Arena is now known as The SSE Arena, Wembley as part of a 10 year sponsorship deal so the divert needs to be reversed (it's currently from The SSE Arena, Wembley to Wembley Arena). I know the form regarding buildings that get renamed for sponsorship reasons, but as it is a 10-year deal, diverting to Wembley Arena is incorrect. I set up a new article for The SSE Arena, Wembley showcasing key points from 2014 when SSE sponsored the building so a divert wouldn't be needed at all, but User:Mduvekot removed the article and reinstated the divert. So the option is to have a new article, which Wembley Arena would link to OR reverse the divert? any advice please! Apologies, new to Wiki so not au fait with the shorthand etc...EmilyWiki (talk) 13:24, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
- Multiple articles for a single building (subject) just because the name changes is not necessary. Should the article be moved to the new name reflecting the sponsorship deal - I would think yes since it is two years old and expected to continue for another eight. I will do it if there are no objections over the week.Peter Rehse (talk) 13:32, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm not sure. I've never heard anyone refer to it as anything other than Wembley Arena until this moment, but... I'm not a reliable source. What do reliable sources call it? We should go with WP:COMMONNAME. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 14:11, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
The official name of it is The SSE Arena, Wembley. I guess the equivalent would be the Millenium Dome becoming The O2. That was a 10 year sponsorship deal too, which has just been extended for another 10 years Cite error: There are <ref>

- Yes, so I see. What do reliable sources call it? Sometimes sources mainly ignore these sponsorships and in those cases we do too, like when Newcastle United tried renaming St James' Park. See Talk:St_James'_Park#Sponsored_name --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 16:45, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Wow that is a hell of a thread! Totally understand where you are coming from Dweller but the issue at St James Park was a) less than a 1 year deal (it was only renamed from Nov 11 - Oct 12: [1]), and b) was a much more personal affair as only one team (Newcastle Utd) had ever used the Stadium (St James Park), whereas at Wembley hundreds of bands/acts/shows/sports have gone through the doors, so there is less of an emotional connection.
In regards to reliable sources, BBC call it The SSE Arena, Wembley [2], as do The Times [3] and even the Daily Mail [4]. Not sure what other reliable sources one could call on, could someone please advise? Many thanks. EmilyWiki (talk) 22:40, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Peter Rehse, just one other thing, the proper name is The SSE Arena, Wembley - is it possible to add the 'The' on to the article title? EmilyWiki (talk) 09:28, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Morning all, Peter Rehse do you think we can reverse the redirect now please? Doesn't look like there has been any more people disagreeing? Thanks. EmilyWiki (talk) 07:44, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- I think so - no one has actually disagreed. I started the process.Peter Rehse (talk) 07:47, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for all your help Peter Rehse, much appreciated. Will now tidy up the page a bit! EmilyWiki (talk) 09:58, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
- I also support the case for moving it to The SSE Arena, Wembley, especially considering the sponsorship lasts for at least 10 years. We're already over three years with the new name, and the 'Wembley Arena' name has by now fallen out of use. --MetrolandNW (talk) 16:29, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- disagree - sponsorship is just that, not what it's known as Evangp (talk) 17:51, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

Move to SSE Arena, Wembley (reopen)
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- Not enough support for re-opening, I see nothing wrong with the original closure Ronhjones (Talk) 13:57, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
I would like to re-open the case for moving Wembley Arena to SSE Arena, Wembley. I believe the previous attempt was abruptly closed without a proper consensus, especially considering more people supported rather than disagreed the move. My support remains the same: SSE is in a 10 year sponsorship, and we are already three years in it. It is now more referred to as SSE Arena rather than Wembley Arena. --MetrolandNW (talk) 20:29, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- disagree the move would be absolutely ridiculous!!Evangp (talk) 02:22, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Comment @MetrolandNW: greetings! Wikipedia:Move review asks that you talk to me, the closer, directly before reopening the move request. I was just curious as to why you didn't do so. Cheers, Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 05:27, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
- Endorse the consensus to keep the current name as closer. I've decided to respond here instead of my talk page, since my comments are more relevant to the move review than to user conduct.
- Regarding abrupt closure: per Wikipedia:Requested moves:
Requests are generally processed after seven days.
Talk:Wembley Arena#Move to The SSE Arena, Wembley was open for more than a year. No additional discussion had followed the revert of the move for almost a year as well. I followed Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions#Determining consensus, keeping in mind the pointsno minimum participation is required
andthis is not a vote
. As stated in the close, it was mostly procedural - I made formal something that had already been in effect for over a year with no major problems. - I also referred to Wikipedia policy, such as Wikipedia:Article titles#Name changes. Even after 1 July 2014, news sources seem to favour "Wembley Arena" over the SSE name. As explained by the previous page mover, an admin has refused to delete the redirect for similar reasons (Special:diff/835417118). The closing instructions also favour the most recent stable title, while the SSE title lasted but a few hours. These reasons mean the page likely will keep its name as of this comment.
- I believe I have followed the spirit and intent of WP:RCMI in closing the requested move. If I am unaware of significant additional information not discussed in the RM, I am more than happy to be informed of such information and reconsider my decision.
