Genre

[edit]

Tales of the Abyss's characteristic genre name is RPG to Know the Meaning of Birth (生まれた意味を知るRPG ,Umareta imi o shiru RPG?).

I'm sorry, but could this be explained a bit more? I have no idea what that means, nor is it cited. 163.120.254.253 (talk) 00:19, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's the theme of the game's story. Also a good way for Namco to advertise the game. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shin Aska (talkcontribs) 05:56, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Character list

[edit]

I have deleted the character list, as it is very probably a copyright violation of this article. Please, redo the list without doing a copy/paste (even the line breaks were similar). -- ReyBrujo 20:31, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm working on a new one based on what's on the page now. Feel free to help/edit/critique here. I'm kinda new to taking on bigger roles in articles. --melodiester 15:00, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The character list is good, but it's pretty big. I think it should be in a seperate article (List of Tales of the Abyss characters or something similar). Anyone agree? -- Tenks 02:06, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I just realized how much space it's taking up compared to the rest of the article. Currently I'm working with some friends to include some other major characters, so I guess it'll have to split off soon. I'm also feeling ambitious and hopeing the main characters will have their own articles, eventually >.> --melodiester 02:46, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And a big thanks to whomever put up the character images; I went through and put fair-use rationale, but I've never done that before, so if anyone could check it and make sure I did it right, that'd be great too. I also shifted the character section up since it's one of the more important things in this article. --melodiester 00:15, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's tales of desitiny 2 not tales of eternia got it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.64.195.197 (talk) 16:42, 7 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]
That game's Japanese title is Tales of Eternia. It was renamed to "Tales of Destiny II" for the stateside release because of copyright issue. Tales of Destiny 2 is a completely different game. Please don't mix them up and edit the article with incorrect information, thank you. Miyuki 04:31, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody deleted the separate article on character list. I think it shouldn't have been deleted. The current one is not very comprehensive. Fangfufu (talk) 15:00, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As this is a single game, a separate character list isn't really necessary. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 15:23, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I hate to pull WP:Pokemon, but how is a character list for a single game a problem? Both Mass Effect and Final Fantasy VII have a separate character page. King Zeal (talk) 03:20, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, god, not Pokemon! *runs* I think FF VII had more major characters than Tales does, but maybe not. Is there any creation/conception information available for the Tales of Abyss characters? What about reception info? If that can be gathered, I could more easily see making a standalone list. Though, looking at the list in the article again, I can see splitting for size, if the individual character sections will actually cover the character's full role in the series (i.e. major plot points, start to finish), with sources. I.E. if its going to be a proper character list, I could support a split (and maybe then, someone will finish the plot section to give the rest of the story instead of just part of it). Though its an anime, rather than a game, I think List of Naruto characters would be a better list to look to for guidance as, unlike the FF list, it is actually an FL and, I think, slightly cleaner in format and organization (and, of course, actually sourced :P). -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 03:47, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. Is it too late to save some of the original list? I remember reading several reviews, interviews and articles that could possibly help, but the original list had everything written so rewriting won't be necessary. King Zeal (talk) 04:47, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It depends. It sounds like the first list was probably deleted for copyvio, so its unlikely to still exist. The second list appears to just be a redirect, so it can be restored since it was just redirected. It does need to be moved to List of Tales of the Abyss characters, though, to meet normal naming conventions. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 04:53, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Well, I think the second list is most appropriate, although it does need more sources, and some trimming. King Zeal (talk) 13:09, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

English Voice Acting

[edit]

Any sources? My friend told me he saw an article or so somewhere about Yuri Lowenthal, so there should be something we can cite... --melodiester 15:00, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

His website says that he'll be in Tales of the Abyss. Tenks 17:52, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He'll probably either play as Luke or Asch. But my bet is on Luke. Zeta26 10:01, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think he'd make a good Guy, but if he were to play Luke and the Japanese precedent persists, he'd also have to play Asch (by way of spoiler.) At any rate, we're not the casting company so we can't really be sure. He could be a relatively minor character like Frings, even. You never know...--melodiester 18:45, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can we just get rid of all of the unsourced listings? Seems like it's mostly speculation. --Tenks 20:30, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the English VA's are just hearsay--literally, just guessed by "Oh, so and so sounds like it could be so and so." Case in point? Melissa Fahn has repeatedly said she's not Anise and it has been pointed toward a newer VA named Jolie Jackson, yet people still keep insisting it was Melissa, despite her saying it wasn't. Shouldn't roles only be listed if they can be completely verified? Just a Fan 04:28, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If someone has the source of the information regarding on Anise's VA, please put it here and so this messup will be avoided once and for all. N J B
Melissa actually said in one of her past weekly chats that she did not voice that role. Just a Fan 17:14, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And yet, people are still linking Jolie Jackson to Melissa Fahn. HELLO, MCFLY! Melissa Fahn ≠ Jolie Jackson. Get over it, already. whoever keeps changing it just keeps looking like an idiot and taking the credit away from another person that deserves it.
Melissa Fahn actually did voice Anise. If you compare her voice to Rika in Digimon Tamers and Kristy in Digimon Savers, you'll notice that they sound almost exactly the same. I strongly believe that she did indeed voice Anise. You can't deny it that the voices are really similar.
To add onto that, she just recently started the role as Bouquet on Blue Dragon, and the characters are so nearly identical it's just about impossible to deny that anyone but Melissa (or someone with a completely identical voice including that slightly scratchy warbling pitch she gets to her voice, which is nigh impossible to replicate, I'm sure) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.193.231.135 (talk) 09:34, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Equippable Abilities" Sub-Category?

[edit]

I suppose this would be a bit odd for a wikipedia article, but I personally have a huge preference for RPGs with "equippable abilities." Basically, this is just games that have abilities (particularly passive abilities) that can be equipped and un-equipped at any time, or, in the very least, there is no penalty for obtaining an ability (eg, you have to invest points and 'buy' a skill. This is a penalty since you can't refund those points and reinvest in a different skill). The AD Skills are an example of equippable abilities. It would be nice if games with such an element could be 'tagged' as such so that they could be pooled together. I'm having a very difficult time finding new RPGs with equippable abilities (the Final Fantasy series hasn't had them at all since FFX-2, and hasn't had any DECENT ones since FFIX). Okay, about the anime.

[edit]

I hope people still come here. I want to establish the Anime page for this game. I already got started, but I need some more experienced wiki users to help me out with uploading pictures and getting the page done as a whole. I added a few citations and quotes from this page. Come on by and lend me a hand.DarkenedSkye (talk) 05:03, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is no reason for the anime to have a separate page and the one you created has been redirected back here. At most, it needs an episode list, but the anime is not significantly different enough from the game for a full article. Also, for future referencing, linking to fansub sites is a very quick way to get yourself banned. We do not endorse nor link to sites violating copyrights per WP:COPYRIGHT. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 05:35, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Under most circumstances, I would believe you on the anime, but I've seen other anime/manga adaptions of games that not only were accurate to each other, but had two seperate wiki pages. Take Star Ocean: The Second Story for example. Now I'm pretty sure you had little to nothing to do with that article in question, but that is just an example that anime adaptions, to whatever, require some sort of seperate page, you have to consider feedback, soundtracks, several other tidbits that may very well fit better in a seperate wiki page. The Story in itself may not have changed (much) but there are other things to consider other than just the plot. But I'm sure you know this, seeing how you are apart of the whole project dealy anyway, which is why your decision somewhat baffles me.DarkenedSkye (talk) 06:05, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Star Ocean: The Second Story (manga) is separate from the video game and I have done a lot of work on the manga article to clean it up (and your sarcastic remark is duly noted). I was not, however, the one to separate it originally, and one could easily make a good case for merging the two articles back together (and I wouldn't argue against it, just nothing I've ever gotten around to doing it). You may also note I was the one who merged the Star Ocean EX anime back into the magna article because, again, they are not significantly different. Indeed, I think I will get around to that merge discussion now.
Just because there are other series in which the anime and/or manga have separate articles is not an excuse to do so here (see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS). Such "tidbits" can fit in this article anyway. In this case, Tales of the Abyss's anime series is just that, an anime series that has barely even started airing with just a few episodes out so far. Thus far, its plot almost exactly follows the game with only minor changes. There is no valid reason to split the article per our MoS at all. Again, at most its section here needs expansion and eventually a separate, properly formatted, episode list should be created for the series. Otherwise, again, I see no valid reason to have two separate articles for it.-- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 06:18, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, first, I have no clue what "sarcastic remark" you are refering to for everything I said was at heart with no intentions of being a smartass, although that is my general personality. I can understand merging an anime with a manga. Especially if they are both accurate to each other, because some animes have nothing to do with the original manga versions. Your link to Other stuff exist makes a half sound point. mainly because it support my end as well. Yes, a few things does not give one an excuse to make a page, but neither does it give an excuse to take one that exist away. Keep in mind that I didn't "make" that article, but its just been existing there, nothing inside of it with links to it, in just about every area of its franchise. I just decided to put something in there. It'd be different if there was already a redirect, and I just took it upon myself to make a seperate page, under that senario, I would have nothing to say, but a page already existed for it. Plus there's the blend in genres. This is highly debatable, but I believe that the topic(s) of Video Game and anime, should be seperate. For those who like one and perhaps not the other. The title and concept may be the same, but the genre difference does have an impact.DarkenedSkye (talk) 06:32, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The sarcastic remark I was referring to was you saying "Now I'm pretty sure you had little to nothing to do with that article in question" when its blatantly obvious from the article's history that I did huge amounts of work on that very article. Anyway, you did create the Tales of the Abyss anime article. The page did not exist before you created it. Having "links" to it does not mean it exists nor that it should be created, but rather that the links should have just been fixed as there IS a Tales of the Abyss article that does discuss the anime. This is not a blend of genres at all, and frankly whether someone might "like" video games but not anime or visa versa is completely irrelevant. The purpose is to provide an encyclopedic coverage of the topic, which may include aspects people don't care about. By your argument, ever media form would have separate articles, for those people who like anime but not manga, or who like manga but not drama CDs, etc. Anime series based on video games are generally covered in their video game articles unless they are sharply different in plot and characters. Similarly, video games which are based on an anime or manga series are generally covered in that series article unless there is a valid reason for a split and they, again, are sharply different. The only other valid reason for splitting is size concerns, and there is none of that here. In the case of say, Tokyo Mew Mew, the video game is covered in the series article because, while it does have new characters, the story is still in the same vein as the series, and there is little else to say about the game than that single paragraph. In the case of Dragon Ball, most of the games are, again, not notable, but due to the sheer quantity, they are covered in a separate list. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 06:59, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I didn't create the page, someone else did. He put stuff in, and then deleted it all and left it alone. I (in a way) remade the page. I didn't bother to took into the history of Star Ocean, mainly because it was irrelevant to the point I was trying to make, which was that anime/manga adaptions of games at some point require (or deserve) a seperate page (so ultimately I didn't know, so I assumed that you had nothing to do with that article). You seem to focus too much on simply the story. But there are other things that need to be looked into, outside of internal deelopment. I'm not going to list them, i'm sure you are an intelligent person. The Sonic the Hedgehog series is a perfect example of this, while not precisely anime/manga, it did have comic adaptions to the games, same story and everything, but even so these were wiki-ed seperately. Maybe it doesn't need' a page now, but it may need one in the future, and there is nothing wrong with making one in advance. There are wiki notable add ons to pages that pretty much says, long story short, work in progress. But whatever, the internet community is too high-strung to listen to or consider a second opinion. I guess I chose the wrong site to be helpful on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DarkenedSkye (talkcontribs) 07:22, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, YOU did create the article that exists now. Whether it may have existed before is, again, irrelevant. You made what exists under that name now. And yes, there are other considerations beyond story, but none of those come into play here. It does not need a page. Its a different media version of the same story, the same characters, etc. There is no need to have two articles with basically the same information repeated over again. That is one reason we do not make separate articles for every media version of anime/manga articles that are not sharply different in terms of story elements, because they are just redundant. There is little else to say about the anime that is not already covered here except its air dates and (possible) eventually licensing. Interesting that you are saying no one is listening to your opinion, when in fact if no one were listening no one would be bothering to answer you at all. I'm trying to explain things from the Wikipedia perspective as an experienced editor, but you seem unwilling to listen or consider those views either, despite their being backed by existing guidelines (which are created by consensus) and policies. Adding insults does not aid your argument at all.-- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 07:39, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
DarkenedSkye, Thats not strictly true, a "in the future we might need it" page could easily fail any one of several guidelines and be nominated at AfD for potential deletion/merging into the game article. Certainly a well done page would be more useful, but doing it as a "placeholder" is not a good idea. I suggest expanding the anime section on the game page for now, and potentially splitting it out to a separate article when the anime has been running a reasonable amount of time (a month isn't enough in this instance) and there is more information and the anime has developed enough. As it stands, after only a few episodes have aired, there really is no need for a separate page. Dandy Sephy (talk) 07:43, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know it's going to be released over here, but nothing was said about it being dubbed. Yes, it's being done by Bandai who has dubbed stuff before, but they haven't always dubbed everything. In the characters heading it says Jade is called "the Necromancer" because he raised the dead. That is false. Tear Grant - Gender

[edit]

It's strange to see this get edited back and forth so here's sources from the game:

Hope this ends the edit spat on Tear's gender. 142.134.240.247 (talk) 14:36, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, it didn't. Someone's apparently vandalized the page back in March 2022 while clearly misunderstanding that while Tear doesn't care about her gender due to her desire to be a "soldier" over anything else, she clearly doesn't identify as male either and never feels the need to correct others about her gender.
That section ought to be locked from editing. Tear is not being misgendered as a man anywhere else except on Wikipedia. 60.52.54.51 (talk) 10:26, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
