Disambiguation

[edit]

I think this should be a disambiguation page listing possible TOTP results. I got here looking for the Time-based_One-time_Password_algorithm page. Kevink707 (talk) 15:30, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. I've restored this as a dab, reverting a 5 year old edit to create the primary topic by User:Unreal7. If there's consensus this should have a PT, that decision should be per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, which will hopefully prevent a repeat of the flipping of the previous redirect. I also agree. Aisteco (talk) 22:08, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

TOTPTOTP (disambiguation)WikiNav shows Time-based one-time password to be the clear primary topic. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:39, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose per WP:TIES. The initialism 'TOTP' is strongly linked to the long-running and popular UK TV series Top of the Pops. Please see a recent example of the use of the initialism in this context. Also, I realise that you could counter this with WP:BUTIKNOWABOUTIT, which I think would be reasonable if this were the primary title of a page, but it isn't. I think redirect to a dab is completely reasonable and preferable to a hatnote in this case. YorkshireExpat (talk) 22:41, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is actually interesting, WikiNav's incoming numbers are seemingly incongruent - it says it sees 220 views at TOTP, but many more outgoing. This problem is caused by not counting incoming redirects, so we have to look at the total stats for all of them together. Therefore in the same month of January '24, we had 220+170+4 = 394 total incoming views, and from that the clickstreams identified 318 to the computing meaning and 28 to the TV meaning. The latter is somewhat close to the anonymization threshold, but the former isn't, so that ~80% should be reasonably accurate.
This is in the borderline domain for primary topic by usage - it still means that, if we short-circuit, there's a risk of leaving ~20% readers astonished that they landed there. We have to have a coherent argument about long-term significance to resolve this. --Joy (talk) 09:31, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Joy Interesting analysis. I suspect that the algorithm is the most likely to attain long term significance (unless it is usurped), but recent events such as the one I hightlighted with the external link above mean that Top of the Pops is still very much in the UK public's conciousness. It will be interesting to see the stats for February when they appear. YorkshireExpat (talk) 10:30, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We can go back into the clickstream archive to see the pattern, too. I'll get back to it later. --Joy (talk) 10:38, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So the pattern is pretty consistent, it's looking better for the less popular option usually, the last month was a bit of an abberation, usually it's more like 2.5 : 1, not 4 : 1. --Joy (talk) 15:14, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
