World Masters of Snooker โย ? โ The tournament in the current 24/25 season has been renamed Riyadh Season Snooker Championship. General tournament pages generally reflect the most recent name of the event. Possible suggestions from me include Snooker Championshipโnot ideal because it sounds vague and could be confused with the World Championshipโand Riyadh Season Snooker Championshipโalso not ideal because it includes the sponsor name, going against convention. I would welcome other suggestions. KDayne (talk) 17:13, 17 December 2024 (UTC) โย Relisting.ย โ๐๐ฐ๐๐ข๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐ข สสฬ อสฬ ส 15:44, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- Adding all of you recent snooker contributors to add to discussion @AlH42, @Catb2006, @HattonL, @HurricaneHiggins, @Lee Vilenski, @Rodney Baggins. Feel free to @ further users y'all feel might have some input. KDayne (talk) 17:11, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- One possibility would be the Riyadh Snooker Championship (invitational). ย Alanย (talk) 17:30, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- What's wrong with Riyadh Season Snooker Championship, if that's what it's called? Riyadh is the name of the city not the sponsor. The problem is there are so many events on the tour these days it's all getting a bit confusing. Rodney Baggins (talk) 18:11, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- "Riyadh Season" is the sponsor I think. ย Alanย (talk) 18:15, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- Riyadh Season isn't the sponsor (as I understand it), rather that this event is a portion of the "Riyadh Season", which I read to be similar to the World Games (with added sports washing).
- Ive not seen anything that suggests that the World Masters is tied to the Riyadh Season event (aside from the location, etc). I actually suggest we delete this article, have the World Masters event on its own and then maybe have a Riyadh Season event article if/when there are more than one event. - This article should definitely exist as a general tournament page that talks about the history of the event, and its different iterations and inceptions, just like with any other snooker tournament. A reasonable question is whether or not the event, as it exists, is inexorably tied to the Riyadh Season festivalโwhich may be discontinued even as different iterations of the event could be organizedโor even to Riyadh and Saudi Arabia at all. I don't see this event being hosted in a British city but I would not be terribly suprised to see it in like Qatar or something one year.
- The point is, naming it "Riyadh Season Snooker Championship" or even "Riyadh Snooker Championship" would focus on the location and surrounding festival which goes against convention. For now, I named the currently ongoing tournament 2024 Snooker Championship (Riyadh) with Riyadh in parentheses to disambiguate it from some other championships, and that's fine for this iteration, but again, I would not prefer naming the city in the general tournament article because the tournament is not necessarily fixed to that city.
- I think something like Snooker Championship (invitational) or similar, could be a possibility. KDayne (talk) 15:19, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- That seems to me to be a reasonable solution. ย Alanย (talk) 15:29, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- Looks like WST consider this event to be a continuation of the 2024 World Masters of Snooker per [1]:
- "Riyadh Season will once again welcome the best snooker players on the planet from December 18th to 20th when the 2024 Riyadh Season Snooker Championship takes place in Boulevard City. The tournament was staged for the first time in March 2024..." Andygray110 (talk) 20:12, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not convinced that something being named after a place or locale goes against naming convention, considering we have things like the Pontins Professional, the Australian Goldfields Open or the Bombay International. We've even got things like the Daily Mail Gold Cup or Fosters Professional or even 1985 Kit Kat Break for World Champions. Our rules are more that we shouldn't give overdue weight to sponsors, but we do need to respect WP:COMMONNAME. No one looking for the "Riyadh Season Snooker Championship" is going to go searching for "Snooker Championship". Lee Vilenski (talk โข contribs) 20:29, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- So the Riyadh Snooker Championship (invitational) that I suggested earlier would work, and separate it from the ranking event also held in Riyadh. ย Alanย (talk) 20:55, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- I would lean more towards Riyadh Season Snooker Championship. Sources overwhelmingly refer to this as the name of the tournament. Andygray110 (talk) 22:26, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- Indeed. It's not the Riyadh event, it's specifically the Riyadh Season event. Lee Vilenski (talk โข contribs) 08:39, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- I was initially against it but you all made some good points and I think I now agree with simply moving it to Riyadh Season Snooker Championship after all. Incidentally, if that is the decision we agree on, we should then probably also move the 2024 Snooker Championship (Riyadh) to 2024 Riyadh Season Snooker Championship. I don't know if that warrants another separate move discussion at that point because the reasoning would be pretty obvious. KDayne (talk) 13:30, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
