Talk:Red XIII
Physical facts
[edit]Actually, Red was 16 in the FF7 game, and the movie is supposed to take place 500 years after the game.. which makes him 516, not 48. No idea where the hell you got 48 from. Will login and correct this, I think. - CitrusC

- The whole thing is explained in the game pretty well. Read the game transcript: [1] and I'll quote:
- Bugenhagen: "Ho Ho Hoooo. I hear that you looked after Nanaki a bit. Nanaki is still a child you see."
- Red XIII: "Please stop, grandfather. I'm 48."
- Bugenhagen: "Ho Ho Hoooo. Nanaki's tribe has incredible longevity. So you see his 48 years would only be equivalent to say that of a 15 or 16 year old in human reckoning."
- Cloud: "15 or 16!?"
- Bugenhagen: "He's quiet and very deep. You thought he was an adult?"
- This does NOT mean that Red XIII only thinks he's 48 years old - that's his actual age. Red XIII's race ages slowly (how the heck else would Red XIII else be alive 500 years after the game's events?!) Bugenhagen is saying that if Red XIII were a human, he'd be physically as mature as a 15 or 16 year old human. Not to even mention emotionally, as he suggests. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 14:56, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Plus, I'd like to also note that most sources give his age as 48, including the official game website, and as far as my reading comprehension says, both my PC and Playstation version manuals. (Well, actually my PS version manual says his age is 45 - I assume this is a misprint, as it agrees with every other detail). I say we use the details from the official website rather than trying to come up with mysterious calculations - that would be either original research or fancruft. Plus, it doesn't really make sense to list Red XIII's age separately for AC or the end of game/AC - all of the other character articles list the age around the time of FF7, and it's trivial to get the ages for other points of time anyway (add 2 to get age for AC and 500 to get age for end of FF7/beginning sequence of AC). --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 15:19, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Confirmed, well done. CitrusC 22:17, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. Great that we could do this without further bloodshedding. =) --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 22:50, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
Red XIII is 48 years old - Anonymous (edit by Cuahl, message by 69.159.90.162)
Why is he missing an eye? - Unknown (edit by DarkEvil, message by 70.231.239.122)
No idea, maybe it will be revealed in the PS3 remake of the game, although I won't be getting it. (Sony products? Ha!) CitrusC 16:27, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- What PS3 remake? *rolls eyes* --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 14:58, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm playing the game right now. For anyone interested they can likely find the script online but while they're staying at the Gold Saucer Hotel before they have to go to the temple of the ancients Red XIII says about his number "Hojo put it on me. Everything else is just war scars," implying that his eye was damaged in battle. Just thought I'd mention it. um... 4 March 2006 (Just some guy)

- Member of the general public? Nah, just cynically believing that if Square says they aren't remaking it, really, then by logical conclusion they aren't remaking it. =) And I guess at one point they specifically said they won't remake games for backwards compatible platforms, too. But we digress. --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 22:50, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well, it was more of an effort to take the piss out of Sony for the reason you mentioned above! CitrusC 00:31, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think one day they'll remake it no matter what. Their strategy: make an incredible demo, let the fans see it and get crazy, disappoint them by saying you won't make this remake, then announce some time later that you have actually done it and poof! You've just created the fastest selling remake ever.--DarkEvil 03:16, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- I actually played it so long ago I can't recall most of the storyline, so a modern remake would certainly be welcome. I recall enjoying it, so thats got to be a good start... That's providing Sony haven't completely brought out Square/Sqeenix/whatever the hell it's called these days and got them making 3rd person shot-em-ups, of course (X-Com style, one good way to kill a fantastic series). Not that I'm above playing the original games, but I'd much rather play a remake, providing it is true to the original. CitrusC 17:39, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
This is just an offhanded question I had and I didn't see it in the article. It's likely a stupid question but is Red XIII a feline or a canine? I'm looking at the picture now... and I could see either. Although perhaps he has that Native American coyote aspect to him (especially with his back), his ears seem fairly feline and just the side of his face in general looks very cat-like. I'm not saying that everyone's as stupid as me but it might be helpful to clarify this in the article.
- Well, he has an attack with howling, right/ That implies that he's a canine, but he's facial features and tail resemble that of a lion... perhaps he's a hybrid of some sort. Abby724 05:25, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Disputes
[edit]From what I've read online, an accepted interpretation of the Bugenhagen grandfather thing is that the relationship is, in fact, biological, and (this is interpreted primarily from Hojo's claims) that Nanaki is capable of reproducing with humans as well as members of his own species. The scene on Disc 1 with Hojo where Nanaki joins the party is very suggestive in this direction (Hojo proposes to "save" two species by unspecified means, but places the last surviving members of each in a tank together ...)
Perhaps someone who can put what I'm saying in words better can add the reference as an alternate yet still valid interpretation of the whole Nanaki story. I'd say that since all of this is based on implications and such, that none of it is canon, per se... --JD 08:46, July 16, 2005 (UTC)
I get what your saying. Hojo was gonna make Aerith and Nanaki mate so that the Cetra would be saved and so that whatever Nanaki is would be saved.By the way what is Nanaki. I don't recall hearing them(or should I say reading them) say what his actual race was called. If anybody knows I'd like to know.-Leandreamo
Species
[edit]What species is Red XIII? Some sort of mthical creature or Puppy-cat?

I always thought that Red and Bugenhagen were not related but it was more of a translation error. Also I never thought Bugen was human either but that is another arugment. One of the reasons that I thought he wasn't human was b/c of Bugen saying that he might one day find his mate and at the end of the game his children look just like him. None of the children looked even remotely human suggesting that he is of another species. It maybe possible for Aerith and Red to mate but remember Hojo was a scientist and crazy. So (IMO) it was more likely that Bugen was just like the head of the village and Red was his loyal friend and student not his grandson, especially since Seto looked like Red and nothing like Bugen (rather Bugen once looked like Red and Seto is possible but we have nothing to suggest it). I think it was more of Hojo being crazy than being able to mate the two together. User:J-Axe
