Scope

[edit]

@Titus Gold, I am not sure where you are going with this, a lot so far is about Wales and Borders franchise or Transport for Wales itself, for the amount of detail it is best there. DankJae 18:18, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An overview page about rail services and transport in Wales. This is still in the development phase. I would appreciate any assistance, thanks. Titus Gold (talk) 18:22, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Titus Gold, Please focus on the railways itself, first please, it seems you're going on a POV drive right now, focusing on all the criticisms first. This article should not be the main place for all the criticisms of the UK government, give that due weight after. It sounds very much opinionated right now. DankJae 18:25, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Read the sources carefully before making assumptions please. Please have a look at a variety of news articles. Titus Gold (talk) 18:29, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DankJae This lead has been removed,
"In Wales, rail services have been criticised for unsatisfactory performance with some officials citing investment and promising improvement. Powers over rail infrastructure and franchise are held be the UK government whilst powers over rail operators rest with the Welsh government.
Please provide an alternative lead, thanks. Titus Gold (talk) 18:32, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I know there are news articles, but you're giving so much undue weight to these news articles, rather than a wider overview of the network. Write about the network first, then recent developments later.
The article is still being created do not add a lead until it is finished (also best discuss before moving it to main). This article is on "Rail transport in Wales" not "Criticism of the UK Government's management of the railway network of Wales". DankJae 18:50, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the lead can be amended as we continue to improve the article. The article is of an adequate standard to move to main but still needs considerable development. Titus Gold (talk) 19:24, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

Unless it is placed into a separate article, the History section is potentially very big. For a start, rail transport did not begin in 1804, that was just the first time a steam loco was used. The Merthyr Tramroad opened in 1802, and there were earlier tramways - the MT itself was built over existing edge rail tracks according to the article. Llanelly and Mynydd Mawr Railway mentions some earlier lines. I like this article; I'll contribute if I find anything relevant. -- Verbarson  talkedits 21:38, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The history section is aimed to be an overview, somethings could be added and later cut out. And yes, it did not start in 1804, tried to reword what the source meant by "railway revolution", and it was the first source I found, so had nothing else to compare to. I've made some additions to this section, but it still needs further development as a history overview. Titus Gold (talk) 19:25, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Big gap in lead and history

[edit]

The lead states "Rail transport in Wales began in the early 19th century initially used for industrial purposes and shortly began to be used for commercial purposes." then the very next sentence is "The Beeching cuts had a significant impact on rail transport in Wales, closing a large number of railway stations. Since then some stations have reopened in Wales but services are not as broad as prior to the cuts." What happened in the intervening 140 years or so? There should be at least a couple more sentences on the extent to which rail transport grew (maybe with timetline) before it was cut back. That can of course only be a summary of the content and again there's a 130 year gap in the history sections so I'm guessing that needs expanding. Something in the lead maybe that states "By 1960, there were xx lines in Wales, carrying yy passengers annually between zzz stations." 10mmsocket (talk) 14:06, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Titus Gold (talk) 20:59, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
