Bad article
[edit]This article is biase. It is basically a review of their last full length. There is very little factual information. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.216.225.22 (talk) 02:28, 22 February 2007 (UTC).
What there is to this article is no worse in terms of bias than any other band's "Style" section. Someone needs to add more sections, however, comprising more factual information. This band is definitely a viable candidate for an article -- they are still together and making albums, and the band is made up of members of other previously existing bands. There is plenty of information to make an article with. Sweatersdotcom 02:31, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
This article uses very biased language. Additionally, where did all the information come from? The one source, http://www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/0724portugal0724-ON.html, only has some of the information currently in the article. Where did all the rest come from? Whoever is responsible for the current content needs to provide some sources. Furthermore, the Band Name section's first few sentences are very un-encyclopedic in nature and are altogether much too informal. This quote I particularly think is unfit for this article: "What is Portugal. The Man? Portugal is a country, not a man. Can a country consider itself a man? Are you confused yet?"Julian Maestas 00:50, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
still a terrible article. Id rewrite it bu wikipedia would probably just revert it to the garabage it is. Not factual, extremely bias. sounds like the bands manager wrote this — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.141.19.218 (talk) 18:03, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Reverts to the "review"
[edit]Why are the mods reverting to the "review" when people actually try to make this a Wikipedia-like article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.219.132.45 (talk) 08:19, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Touring Members = Wrong
[edit]Fixed the tour members, names were completely wrong and not even close to being right. Brandon Mitchell 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I've heard that the drummer Jason Sechrist was recently dismissed from the band because he needed to deal with a family emergency. Is there any documentation backing this up? Switchbladesista (talk) 17:52, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Here is mention of it from the bands myspace blog. http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=2076569&blogId=482160900 It says that they had a person covering Jason Sechrist while he was at home, but it doesn't say anything about being kicked out of the band. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.246.185.61 (talk) 20:03, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I corrected Harvey Tumblson to Harvey Tumbleson since this is the correct spelling. Switchbladesista (talk) 07:54, 15 November 2009 (UTC) [1] [2]
You removed Kirk Ohnstad? He was definitely a former touring member. Played guitar. Last time I saw him was at the TLA in Philadelphia during their tour with Minus The Bear in late '08 or early '09 I believe. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.101.47.88 (talk) 03:46, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Seriously terrible article. For instance; no matter in what context, NEVER state: "Similar to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd ". It's just wrong. Furthermore, " but Portugal also adds live jams at the end of certain songs to create a stream-of-consciousness flow between songs. This adds a flow between songs that makes the set seem like one epic movement", I mean c'mon, seriously? GTFO. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.92.63.33 (talk) 04:13, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
LP release dates and album artwork
[edit]Please add the LP release dates! A Must Do! I can just be the year. User:Queen-Max 22.08.2007 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.173.39.76 (talk) 10:58, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Ok i forgot Wikipedia is a self-made dictionary and so i jsut added the stuff myself...sry — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.173.39.76 (talk) 11:03, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
It would be interesting to know about the artwork on all their records. I've heard it's the singer that creates the images and then they have a Portland, Oregon based designer put it all together. I believe the guys name is Austin Sellers [3] Should we add this information? Switchbladesista (talk) 07:05, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Genre
[edit]I would like to take out, in the genre section, that there earlier work is "post-hardcore" when there is absolutely no influence of post-hardcore in any of their work. I listen to them quite often and i don't see it. Anybody else agree? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.33.89.238 (talk) 16:42, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I definitely agree. Earlier work is not post-hardcore. 70.95.115.98 (talk) 06:40, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Genres
[edit]What happened to the genres section? PTM are by no means "Art Rock" or "Glam Rock". I edited it down to Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Progressive Rock, if anyone feels any others should be added/removed I think it should be discussed here. --Pritoolmachine2806 (talk) 15:50, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
Neutralizing article
[edit]I've removed one excessively favorable (and unsourced) paragraph in the intro and added some citation-needed tags to another later section to try to start the process of making this entry more neutral. I'd appreciate any further help on this, either adding sources for some of these assertions or removing more content that can't be verified. Mr. Darcy talk 16:44, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
Origin of the name?
[edit]How did they come up with this name anyway? I love it! 84.241.248.37 (talk) 11:19, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
This has got to be the most original name of all times. I also love it. I wish they would tell us more about it. Oh, and it would be nice to know when they are going to Portugal ;-) 84.87.218.112 (talk) 19:00, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
At first glance it looks like the end of one sentence and the beginning of another. ―cobaltcigs 04:53, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Well, I'm not surprised to see that I'm far from alone in wondering about their name. But why no info/answer after 4-1/2 years? Surely somebody must know something about it! Cgingold (talk) 03:25, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
It has to do with Portugal being a country, and countries personify a group of people as one. By naming it Portugal. The Man, it personifies the whole band as one man. I read it in an interview, but I don't know where it is. 50.141.151.74 (talk) 00:43, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
Is it possibly a reference to the One Hundred Years of Solitude character Francisco The Man? (I realize that Francisco the Man is a band also, but two bands can be inspired by the same thing) T.Douglas.Fairbanks (talk) 20:19, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Links to Soundcloud
[edit]A user is linking to covers of Portugal. The Man in line to Soundcloud.com. I am not sure the policy about such links and if anybody could help it would be much appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jofurson (talk • contribs) 14:44, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Plagiarism
[edit]Under the section "Atlantic Years" the last paragraph mentioning the new project that the band was just apart of is completely plagiarized from the Rolling Stone article. I know the author sourced the article, but that does not mean that you can copy and paste the RS article into this wikipedia article — Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.238.231.157 (talk) 19:17, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
Unstylize
[edit]It seems to me that the name of the band should not have the period stylization in their name on Wikipedia, just like it was removed from Fun (band)? I propose Portugal the Man. Electricnet (talk) 10:59, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

- Portugal. The Man → Portugal the Man
- Portugal. The Man discography → Portugal the Man discography
- Woodstock (Portugal. The Man album) → Woodstock (Portugal the Man album)
- Template:Portugal. The Man → Template:Portugal the Man
– Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trademarks, the band's name should be written as "Portugal the Man" in accordance to standard English grammar. — Zawl 18:40, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose. Per MOS:TM, Do not invent new styles that are not used by independent sources. This band is never called "Portugal the Man"; every Google News result spells it the way we currently do. Also, the article indicates that "Portugal" and "The Man" are meant to be separate words, so moving this would make the title incorrect (and I'm not seeing how it's not "standard English grammar" in that case). Nohomersryan (talk) 23:00, 7 September 2017 (UTC)
- The period is just stylization. There are independent sources[4][5][6][7] spelling it "Portugal the Man", showing it's not an invented style. It's not correct to have a period in the middle of a proper noun. Fun. also has a period but consensus concluded it was merely stylization and had to be removed. Same thing for Damn.. "Portugal" and "The Man" not meant to be two separate words, John (from the band) implied "the man" is used as a descriptor of "Portugal" like in the sense that "Portugal is the Man". — Zawl 08:40, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
- There are some stray sources that say "Portugal the Man", but it looks like it's easily the least common spelling of the band's name. Even "Portugal. the Man" seems like it's more common, despite probably making the least amount of sense. Reading over MOS:TM again this RM has still not addressed "Avoid using special characters that are not pronounced, are included purely for decoration, or simply substitute for English words or letters (e.g., "♥" used for "love", "!" used for "i") or for normal punctuation, unless a significant majority of reliable sources that are independent of the subject consistently include the special character in the subject's name." There is definitely a "significant majority" here, so I will continue to oppose. Nohomersryan (talk) 14:43, 8 September 2017 (UTC)

- Oppose — per WP:COMMONNAME and MOS:TM; "Portugal the Man" is not a common way of spelling this band's name, so although it isn't exactly the same as inventing a style, it does teeter on it. This reminds me of the RMs for Sunn O))), Deadmau5, and Tech N9ne. Taylor Trescott - my talk + my edits 23:50, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Wikipedia needs to stop trying to change the name of everything without good reason. Chase (talk | contributions) 19:16, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

Too long, & "inside" trivia
[edit]Way too much "so-what" ya-kitty-yak trivia, for example this:
"On February 8, 2013, Portugal. The Man leaked pictures on Bonnaroo's official Tumblr page which showed that celebrated producer Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse, was producing the band's new record. According to a Q&A Zach did on Portugal. The Man's official Tumblr page, their new album was influenced by Pink Floyd and The Dark Side of the Moon.[36]"
Stuff like that should be massively trimmed, deleted (or explained). The article reads like a fanboy tabloid magazine. (And I normally disparage Wiki censor's dry & dusty definition of "encyclopedic.")

There's a bunch of loose lines in the Portugal. The Man#Timeline which obscure content. They are beyond my template knowledge - could someone please remove them?--Launchballer 09:42, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Add "Weird Al" Yankovic as associated act?
[edit]On the talk page for Al's article, there seemed to be a feeling that their ties were deep enough (what with the remixes and the performances and the new single) to add PTM to his sidebar. Can we do the same on PTM's article?--Aresef (talk) 22:34, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Mary Peltola
[edit]Several of the bandmembers filmed an ad for Mary Peltola in the 2022 Alaska Congressional race. I don’t know the extent of the endorsement but that should probably be added to the activism section. 136.27.30.177 (talk) 05:39, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
