[edit]Moved from Mauao - Mrcurly 12:42, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
The article would benefit greatly if someone added some information about the history mentioned (The first human settlement in the 13th century, the expelling of Ngamarama people, the battle of Kokowai, and the Ngapuhi incursion into the Bay of Plenty in the early part of the 19th century). Article name
[edit]This should really be titled 'Mauao' rather than 'Mount Mauao', to be more accurate.
- According to New Zealand Geographic Placenames Database [1] the official name is Mount Maunganui (both for the hill and the suburb). Nurg 04:34, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that it should be moved to Mauao. I have never heard of it referred to as Mount Mauao, only as Mauao or Mount Maunganui, and as far as I'm aware Mauao is the favoured name for the mountain. I'm just about to move it. I'm also going to bold the text Mt Maunganui (possibly changing it to Mount Maunganui), since it is definitely an alternative name, and possible (as mentioned above) still the official name. Markdarb 09:48, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- The article Mount Maunganui says it's officially known by its Maori name Mauao, although the source cited explains how Mauao is the Maori name but does not actually say that it's currently the official name. Oh well, that can be sorted out in due time. For now I'll just move this page. Markdarb 10:00, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Because Mauao already exists (that's where this page was originally located - it's a redirect page along with a talk page with a short mention of the move) I can't move the page. An admin has to do it so I'll add it to Wikipedia:Requested moves. Markdarb 10:05, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, the move's requested now. However, I'm just going to list all of the pages I can think of which support, or don't support, that this article should be called Mauao:
- Mount Maunganui - it is referred to as Mauao here
- Google search for Mauao vs Google search for "Mount Mauao" OR Mt "Mauao" - the search for Mauao has many more results, and the results at the top are from trustworthy sites, whereas most results in the second search are just from Wikipedia mirror sites (ie. they're this article)
- Mauao on Tauranga City Council Site - referred to on all the pages as Mauao, not Mount Mauao (once mentioned as Mt Maunganui)
- Listing on a database of "official New Zealand place names" - here it is listed Mount Maunganui (although not Mount Mauao), and the word Mauao is not mentioned. This indicates that Mount Maunganui is most likely still the official name, although I notice that this listing was last reviewed 19 April 2002, so it may be out of date)
- So it is never referred to as Mount Mauao, although the official name is quite likely still Mount Maunganui. Since there's already a Mount Maunganui article (about the town), I think Mauao is the best name for the article. 20:33, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Mauao → Mount Maunganui (mountain) –
I thought I'd revive the article name discussion. It would appear that a few years back when the discussion was first had, disambiguation wasn't the done thing yet. The Mount is much better known as Mount Maunganui than by its Māori name, and that should be reflected in this article's name, with a disambiguator added to differentiate it from the coastal settlement. That said, there might be opinions on 'The Mount' for the name, or even to keep things as they are, hence the formal move request rather than just a bold move. Schwede66 23:41, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- While I agree that it is most commonly called Mount Maunganui or The Mount, either of those titles requires disambiguation. Anyone who searches Wikipedia for the article is likely to have to go through a disambiguation page or via the article on the settlement regardless of the name we move it to. Changing to Mount Maunganui (mountain) or creating a redirect from that, and similarly a redirect from The Mount, New Zealand will assist people using the search box because they will be able to see the correct article as they type. Overall, I think creating such redirects is as good a solution as moving the article, but I am not opposed to the move.-gadfium 22:48, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
- For a title I would choose Mount Maunganui (mountain) and have a disambiguation page, that way people searching for the village or the mountain will see both and can choose accordingly.MilkStraw532 (talk) 00:56, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
