Unreferenced
[edit]This article needs more references than just the subject's own blog. As it stands, it looks self-written. Has this individual ever been mentioned in a newspaper or magazine? Why is he considered famous enough to have his own Wikipedia article? Please review Wikipedia:Notability (people). If credible external references to establish notability cannot be located and added to this article, then the article should be nominated for deletion. --Elonka 21:22, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- As I recall, he's been writing for IGN magazine for as long as I can remember (since the late 90's). So, yes he is mentioned in magazines. I say keep him in, but only because I think he's well-known in the gaming community. (Posted 02:07, April 30, 2006 by 24.160.119.140)
- Matt is important as he appears to be something of a quasi-insider when it comes to Nintendo news, often receiving and doling out hints to future information. He is kind of a figurehead reference journalist for all things Nintendo. - Green Gecko —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.129.155.102 (talk • contribs) 19:50, May 17, 2006
- Hiya, I don't want it to seem that I'm being obsessive about this (I'm an IGDA volunteer who's trying to help improve the article), but we really need some more citations in order to keep this article from being deleted. Has his name ever appeared in an outside magazine or newspaper, or can we at least list some of his own articles? Also, when adding comments to a discussion page, please "sign" them with four tildes (~~~~). This adds your name and datestamp to each message, and makes conversations a bit easier to follow. Oh, and for more information about me, click on my name. Thanks. :) --Elonka 17:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
- rofl, your a volunteer of the IGDA and don't know who matt is... LOL 67.71.35.12 04:05, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- That would be correct. In fact, I have checked with several other of my associates in the game industry, and none of them have heard of him either. Though it is confirmed that Matt does some writing for IGN, it does not appear that he is at all well-known outside of that particular Nintendo circle. If anyone does know of any third-party profiles of Casamassina by mainstream press, I am interested in seeing them. I again repeat my caution that with the limited amount of information that is currently available, the claim of his "notability" is tenuous at best, and this article may well get nominated for deletion unless further proof of fame can be provided. --Elonka 08:04, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Some writing? He does almost every review, and does most of the news on regular days(not the megaton that was the 14th) rofl indeed thats sad you don't know who matt is. So have you even been to IGN wii at all? and I think that anyone with 4,161 comments to his IGN blog derserves an entry :P. And what associates in the game industry did you talk to?? He's one of the most respected game journalists. 72.72.205.110 00:22, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- If you have references confirming this, per WP:V, please feel free to add them to the article. --Elonka 00:54, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- as theunknown pointed out in the article http://club.ign.com/b/editor?username=Matt-IGN shoes all the articles hes done... and as you can see its the majority of reviews and news. and if you google his name you'll see that there are thousands of pages that reference him
- Elonka, I am honestly very surprised that you have never heard of Matt and that you have also been so dismissive of him. IGN is one of, if not THE single largest video game publications and Matt is one of the most prolific and widely known of it's founding members. If you're so-called associates in the game industry deal at all with Nintendo consoles, I cannot fathom how they could not know of him. If you need further justification, look no further than http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4027&Itemid=2&limit=1&limitstart=2 where next-gen.biz lists the top 50 gaming journalists. I think they do a fair job of explaining his significance. 128.239.219.107 19:03, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reference, it looks like a good one. I have added it to the page. And no, I don't know too many people who deal with Nintendo consoles. That's a "niche" in the game industry, which has a lot of niches! For example, on that list of top 50 journalists, I've definitely heard of some of them, but not all. I think it would be rare to find anyone who had themselves heard of all 50 of those names. --Elonka 21:59, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
The most influential publication? IGN. The highest selling console out there right now? Nintendo Wii. The chief Nintendo editor of IGN? Matt Casamassina. If anything, he is in the top 10 for videogame journalists, never mind the top 50. I would understand if people had never heard of the IGDA, but anyone who knows anything about game journalism will know Matt Casamassina quite well. And asking three of your friends if they've heard of him does not make your position any more arguable.
Nickname meaning
[edit]What is the etymology of "Matt-a-no"? Is it a funny nickname or a reference to a videogame? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.103.154.11 (talk • contribs) , 19:09, May 1, 2006
- In Resident Evil 4 the Ganados will sometimes shout "Mata lo!" (or "Kill him!" in spanish) when Leon S. Kennedy is discovered. This nickname emerged from a sort of dumb play on words with this RE4 phrase and was used in the CubeToons comics. Isonux 22:39, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
In the CubeToons comics, it is what "Craig-A-Roo" calls Matt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mike PhD (talk • contribs) 13:57, August 8, 2006
Actually the Ganados would yell Mata lo which means "Kill him!". I know it doesn't really matter here but just to clear things up. =) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.135.60.20 (talk) 22:50, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Citation
[edit]I added the Wii page as the citation for the "Most Wii articles are written by him" statement. If you look at the articles on the page, you will find this statement to be factual. Theunknown42 02:20, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
contact
[edit]Does anybody know his email? i wanna contact him cube_qa@ign.com doesn't work
Go to http://wii.ign.com/email.html if you want to email IGN Wii mailbag which he does.
It would be helpful for the article if we get information to add from him. FullMetal Falcon 01:37, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
His email is matt-ign@ignmail.com. Isonux 22:44, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Should we add that he is on of the most influent journalists, and that he has access to more info than most journalists?

Proposed merge
[edit]I've been watching this page since I added that image of Matt(this February) and so far this article has not changed in size. In fact I believe its gotten smaller, so due to this I propose a merge with any other IGN staff page to create a list. FullMetal Falcon 01:37, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Matt's Wife
[edit]While the 1Up Yours podcast of February 23 DID indicate that Matt was dating somebody from Nintendo, Matt is married and has a daughter, so I doubt he is dating anybody. Also, this was presented whilst bad mouthing Matt for being a competitor who was liable to have received a big exclusive; it hardly seems a credible source for personal information about Matt. As such, I have removed this from the article. 128.239.152.92 07:41, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
As an added note, I realize that they reiterate that he is married to somebody from Nintendo, but that doesn't make it any more credible. It's still hearsay. 128.239.152.92 08:04, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
Halo DS
[edit]Hi, I'm not used to editing wiki's, so I hope you'll forgive me if I manage to do something stupid :p Anyway, I recently checked Matt Casamassina's wiki page to read what it had to say about the Halo DS issue as I hadn't heard of it before. As some of you are probably aware, someone appears to have removed all other information on the page that doesn't relate to Halo DS. I don't know if this is standard or not. In addition to which, I also have a couple of points I'd like to raise. Someone has written at the bottom of the page "UPDATE: THIS GAME DOES EXIST." I don't feel confident removing it myself, but without some sort of citation other than Mr. Casamassina's videos I think this is.. well, not inaccurate, but I think you get my drift. Also. The point saying that he is pressing the left bumper and firing a right-handed weapon are not necessarily accurate, as I beleive in Metroid Hunters you used the left bumper to fire. I don't know if that helps, but there you go. For what it's worth. - (Gnavin) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.253.97.46 (talk) 10:57, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
- There was a LOT of unnecessary "analysis" of this Halo DS. I removed it all, as it does not belong in an article about Matt Casamassina. If people want to dissect and talk about Original Research, take it to an article on Halo DS, not Matt. LN3000 08:29, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah but you also removed the FACT that the Halo DS shown is quite similar to Goldeneye for DS... I know that this is an article about Matt, but Matt is this story's epicenter. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.140.6.112 (talk) 17:05, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- You are mixing something called "fact" with something that is "what you think". There is a difference. You could compare 3 minutes of just about any FPS game and say they are similar. LN3000 06:39, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

- Matt appears to have addressed this Wikipedia article in his recent blog, here. Would someone please review the situation and take the appropriate action. Thanks. -- Jreferee t/c 13:52, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- Shouldn't the wording of the Halo DS section be changed. First of all, it implies that Matt was correct in saying that a nearly finished build of a Halo DS game existed. In reality, this is not true. The Bungie quote says that it was an unsolicited pitch. If it was a pitch, that means the game was never in development, but was merely an idea proposed to the upper echelons within Bungie. Further, if it was 'unsolicited', as the Bungie rep says, that means that it was not a commissioned project at all. That is to say, no one at Bungie said "Make this Halo DS thing". It could have been from someone with some free time, or it could have been submitted to both Bungie and the press from some yutz in his basement. Unsolicited also means that Bungie did not look at it.
- From what I can see, Matt C (and the general public) have made too much of an intuitive leap between "shitty little five second demo" and "...the project was eventually cancelled. But not before it was completely up and running and fully playable." (quoted directly from Matt Casamassina's blog)
- All in all, Matt has been incredibly misleading, and Wikipedia should be portraying things more accurately than it currently is for this entry.69.41.198.40 13:57, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- How has he been misleading? Halo DS existed at one point in development as a sales pitch to Microsoft and Bungie. I don't see anything that implies he played a nearly finished version of the game.
- In fact, look at the first sentence. He played an early build of the game. There's nothing wrong with the wording. You have some sort of bias and/or grudge, so let it go. There's nothing that implies that Bungie/Microsoft made it themselves at the very last part of it was a quote from Bungie themselves.--MrBubbles 14:09, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- LN3000's statements are correct. Since this is the Matt Casamassina article, the only thing that his blog can really be used for, is to confirm that "Matt said such and such". It doesn't confirm if a game did or didn't exist. In general, blogs aren't even supposed to be used as sources on Wikipedia. I recommend that the Casamassina biography here focus strictly on Casamassina, and not on other things unless we have proof though other sources that those things are notable. In other words: If Casamassina writes that he played "Halo VII", that's not worth adding to his bio. However, if the NY Times were to write, that Casamassina claimed he played Halo VII, then we could use the NY Times as a source that there was public attention on Casamassina's statement. That make sense? See also WP:V, WP:RS, WP:AUTO, and WP:COI, and let me know if you have any questions. :) --Elonka 17:21, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- I think I fixed it into a decent section, where it pertains solely to Matt, instead of an article about Halo DS inside of an article about Matt. Any information about the demo itself should go into the Halo DS article. I think the way I have it now is the best way to have it (unless I made some typo or grammar error.) My god
[edit]I think there is enough evidence that Halo DS could have been a fraud to include the words "May have" instead of "Had". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.1.189.157 (talk) 12:43, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
- Where? How much more proof do you need that Halo DS existed? It may not have been released, or even planned on being released, but it did exist. Videos exist, as well as official Bungie explanation. LN3000 19:54, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
There is just tons of evidence on the internet that those videos were a fraud. And one worker at Bungie talked about it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.1.189.157 (talk) 10:45, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Gone from IGN?
[edit]I have removed a sentence stating that Matt Casamassina left IGN on August 1st as there is no citation nor any evidence I can find online about his departure. If this is true, please provide a citation from a valid source (WP:RS) that adheres to Wikipedia's policy on biographies of living people (WP:BLP) before restoring the sentence. Thank you.
