Could someone who knows how infoboxes work please fix the death date? I tried, but it just broke it. Katharineamy (talk) 14:46, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tone

[edit]

Overall the article is fine and it does a good job in establishing the difficulties she faced in a male-dominated profession. However, some of the wording seems to inappropriately inflate her actual importance to astronomy. For example:

  • "...one of the first famous astronomers of her period."
  • "Maria continued to pursue important work in astronomy..."
  • "...a well-received pamphlet..."

These assertions need to be properly established by reliable citations. Thank you. Regards, RJH (talk) 18:25, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Professional carrer of a woman scientist

[edit]

Maria Kirch’s (Winckelmann) Wikipedia page breaks down the different segments of her personal and professional life very well. However, the fact that women scientists were not as acknowledged by the professional world, is still reflected in the information displayed on the page. Compared to other white, male scientists working during the same time period, there is a lot more information provided on their pages in even just the text box bio to the right.

If no applicable photos are available even some added quotes either by her or about her would help spice up the page.It is good that there is such an emphasis on how much women were restricted in the scientific world on her page, but now women are gaining more influence.

Why isn’t the growing equality reflected in the Wikipedia pages of all women scientists who have made important contributions? Is it hard to have a detailed page because there was a lack of credit given to her work as it was completed, and it is now hard to determine exactly how much she contributed versus her husband?

Even if that is the case, a picture and a few added points to the text box bio would make it clear that more effort was put into the creation of the page. Also, the entire Wikipedia page was drawn from only three different sources. Is this because those three sources sufficiently covered all the significant details of her life and professional career, or is there more room for research to be done? Another link, <http://www.epigenesys.eu/en/science-and-you/women-in-science/657-maria-margarethe-winkelmann-kirch> provided some more information on her, even just in the form of interesting details. In addition, the website's catchy headlines also drew my attention and made the article more uplifting in describing her love of astronomy as well as her accomplishments. More information about her personal life and her career after she left the academy should be included. Her story has a very abrupt end. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hawddb (talkcontribs) 17:43, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
