Origins of the Mangalorean Catholics

[edit]

It may well be that the ancestors of the Mangaloreans are Portuguese immigrants from Goa, but if the study of origins of names (Onomastics) has any meaning, at the very least, Pinto and Pereira indicate Jewish origins. Relating the years of their arrival from Portugal, indications are that they were 'New Christians' whose departure from Portugal was prudent at best. — Ineuw talk 01:20, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a Mangalorean Catholic genealogy buff. From what I know, there are only seven Mangalorean families with some European descent (six of them patrilineally descended from Jesuit priests and brothers (five Portuguese and one Spanish) and one from a French clockmaker. They are respectively as follows: Gonzales, Pachéco, Rosario, Moreira, Texeira, Fernandez, and Saldanha. Liberal Humanist (talk) 06:22, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The Mangaloreans aren't European by blood at all, but fully native converts from Hinduism (Portuguese names were given to Hindu converts at the time of Baptism) who left Goa for Tulu Nadu due to various reasons (military attacks on Goa by Bijapur/Dutch/Marathas, epidemics, inability to pay taxes, investigation by the Inquisition, etc.) Note that although a tiny minority of Goan Catholics are of Brahmin descent, the Brahmins are the largest group among the Mangaloreans. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2402:3A80:18CF:CC78:9499:EFCD:6920:2628 (talk) 09:48, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alan Machado's latest book points to the Maratha invasions as the biggest cause of migrations from Goa to Kanara:
