Matriculation is usually offered to bumiputras by the Ministry of Education,Malaysia while Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia is usually pursued by non-Bumiputras as it is the only option (besides opting for a private tertiary education, which is extremely costly) if a student is to continue his education up to the tertiary level. The duration of matriculation is only 1 year long with a significantly narrower (less breadth) syllabus compared to STPM, although it is considered equal to STPM. However, this claim is highly debatable as there are Matriculation examination question leakages and the level of difficulty of the Matriculation examination question is not at par with the STPM examination questions (the Matriculation questions have been said to be of equal level to that of SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia, the Malaysian equivalent of the GCSE).
Apart from that, the IPTAs(Institut Pengajian Tinggi Awam (in Malay) or Public Higher Education centre ie. Universities) will usually give priority to those with a Matriculation certificate. Likewise, preference will be given to the matriculation students for the course they want to pursue in the IPTAs. The STPM student, however, will only be considered after the matriculation student have been given their places. And therefore, this issue of "Matriculation versus STPM" is still widely debated throughout the country time and again.
Some wonder why the government continues to carry out two examinations at the same level (Pre-university), given the amount of time, effort, material and amount of money spent to produce two sets of examination papers said to be of the same standard.
University Entrance section: POV
[edit]I think the section contains alot of personal opinion on the perceived level of difficulty of the STPM. Anecdotally, I've heard it is actually easier than the GCE A levels. Is there a reference to support the view that STPM is more difficult? If not, phrases like "generally much easier" should not be used.
the truth fact why goverment want to matriculation to be remained is so the malays can go university easillo, because the exam is not tough and is bocor selalu and goverment want to help malay. face it, that is the fact!!!!! if not why is matriculation still kept and walaupun it easy but it is said more advantage to go to local goverment. add the system for matriculasi entrance is 90 percent malay and 10 percent for non malay. is this equal right in malaysia!!!! this is just my personal opinion and i have no reason to kutuk kerajaan...be fair goverment... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.51.2.98 (talk) 05:32, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
