Jolnir
[edit]It's a vent of Surtsey, isn't it? Guanlongwucaii (talk) 11:06, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Guanlongwucaii
- Yes, and it wouldn't hurt to note that in its entry. I'll do it. -- Avenue (talk) 12:32, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
It does not make sense to include Jolnir. It is a part of Surtsey volcano.
Kolbeinsey Ridge information
[edit]The date of last known eruption of Kolbeinsey ridge appears to be wrong. It at least does not agree with the information on the Global Volcanism website.

Missing from the list
[edit]Just created this stub Thordarhyrna it's a volcano in iceland - so it should probably be in the list :) EdwardLane (talk) 04:57, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
Also missing are Hamarinn, Snaehetta (apparently part of Esjufjöll), and Veidivötn(found the icelandic spelling Veiðivötn)
some info for all of those can be found in this [1] figure 2.7 and 2.8

User:irpsit Veidivotn is a fissure belonging to Bardarbunga, as well as Hamarinn. They can be listed as same volcano. Same applies for Edlgjá and Laki; these are not volcanoes but fissure belonging to Katla and Grimsvotn, respectively. Hverfjall is just a crater belonging to Krafla. There is no sense listing all kinds of mountains part of the same volcano, because then to be fair we would have to list thousands of these mountains. For example, there are a few interesting shield volcanoes in Iceland, such as Skjalbreidur or Ok. I should say that what is considered a main volcano or not, is a little bit subjective, but I think it is good to stick to scientific consensus on this. Vatnsfjoll is a system independent from Hekla. Krakatindur is not a volcano but a part of Vatnsfjoll. Geysir, Thórólfsfell and Grensdalur volcanoes are considered extinct, they should not be listed (because there are just too many extinct volcanoes in Iceland). Brennisteinfjoll and Bláfjoll are sometimes considered independent volcanoes, sometimes as the same system. Sometimes Hrafnabjorg is considered as another independent volcanic system, but not in general.
I just found a mention of another mountain under Vatnajokull called Pálsfjall - its not far from Thordarhyrna this page [2] has it sharing the same eruption as Thordarhyrna - but this page [3] has them as different places with photos of palsfjall and thordarhyrna seperately - it is clearly a mountain on iceland - so it's a volcano :) EdwardLane (talk) 09:33, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
Just found this [4] which suggests link a page which could be used to flesh out the Global Volcanism Program list [5] which could probably be useful. EdwardLane (talk) 14:30, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- Apparently Hamarinn is also known as Loki-Fögrufjöll which is on the list, and also known as Lokahryggur
- That's correct. Reykholt (talk) 15:55, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Tjörnes Fracture Zone
[edit]BTW: This is no volcano, but - as the name indicates - a tectonic fracture zone. Took it out of the list.
The volcano situated next to it is Theistareykjabunga. Reykholt (talk) 15:57, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Askja
[edit]The list shows that the 1961 eruption was VEI 5. But that is the figure for the 1875 eruption. I believe that the 1961 eruption was VEI 2. Or have I misunderstood? Theeurocrat (talk) 12:57, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Maelifell Volcano
[edit]Is there a reason why the Maelifel volcano is not included in the list of volcanoes? It appears to be a rather high-profile one, based on online reports.--Ratha K (talk) 16:02, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
list volcano by type?
[edit]I am hoping to get answer why the volcanoes are not also cataloged by type. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.131.223.99 (talk) 17:05, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
- Agree, I suspect the only reason your point was not addressed is that sorting out the classification is time consuming and means you have do the the systems/zones as well as adding an extra column to a large table. So no one has bothered, although it is useful information as to likely eruptive characteristics and risk. I have finally reached this page in my current mission to bring some consistency to the Icelandic volcano articles so it will be attacked now some of the core articles can support it. Cheers. - I am doing on going work to reorganise the table in section Volcanic zones and systems as for example more research is needed to validate a questionable claim that Geysir is a volcanic system when its a hydrothermal field in a volcanic system and systems are best defined by common shallow magma chambers and composition of eruptives. Numbering in table does not appear helpful as what has resulted is not a numbering system recognised in the literature. ChaseKiwi (talk) 09:34, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
