West Berkshire
[edit]The list of schools in the West Berkshire Education authority was a complete mess with lots of schools listed which are in fact in other education authorities. I've put in a list of state secondary schools from the West Berkshire LEA's website and moved all the Reading and Wokingham schools to the correct places.
I wasn't sure where to put the following schools. Could people please put them in the correct LEAs (presumably Slough, Windsor, etc.
These schools were all incorrectly listed under West Berkshire. West Berkshire is the Education Authority. Could people please place these schools under the appropriate LEAs (presumably Slough, Windsor, etc.)
Aldryngton Primary School (in Earley)- Bradfield College (public school)
Dedworth Middle School (comprehensive school, in Windsor)Desborough School (comprehensive school, in Maidenhead)Eton College (public school)Newlands Girls' School (comprehensive school, in Maidenhead)Pangbourne College (public school, in Pangbourne)Park House School and Sports College (comprehensive school)Slough Grammar School (grammar school, previously: Slough Secondary School, Slough High School, Upton Grammar School)St Bernard's Convent School (grammar school, in Slough)Trevelyan School, Windsor (comprehensive middle school)- Wellington College (public school)
- The Windsor Boys' School (comprehensive school)
Kent - Faversham - The Abbey school
(you missed it out :[)
- Have marked those which are already included. Anyone know where the others belong? Tafkam 22:44, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Location of Downlands Community School
[edit]The list has Downlands Community School listed in Hassocks. According to the Hassocks article and the school website, Hassocks/Downlands is in West Sussex [1]. However, the school is listed in Brighton & Hove. Are there two schools by this name? — ERcheck (talk) 23:41, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- The school is definitely in West Sussex LEA (see [2]). It appears that this has already been corrected. Tafkam 12:06, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Standardise format proposal
[edit]It seems that as the list becomes longer it also becomes more varied. I propose a standardised format for each entry. I am aware of the ongong debates of naming conventions for schools, so propose a simple system, based on the fact that the authority already gives some information about the location of the school. I suggest the following:
- Where a school's location and type is obvious, it is simply listed, e.g. [[Marlow Bottom Primary School]]
- Where location is not necessarily obvious, it be added as a wikilink, after a comma, e.g. [[Tree View Primary School]], [[Marlow Bottom]]
- Where the type is unclear, it be added in brackets, but not as a wikilink, e.g. [[Marlow Bottom School]] (primary school)
- Where location and type are unclear, both be added, e.g. [[Tree View School]], [[Marlow Bottom]] (primary school)
In addition, I propose the separation of Middle schools from the primary/secondary sectors, as has been done with Isle of Wight schools.
Thirdly, I would like to see some standardised decision as to whether or not schools without wiki entries should have wikilinks. At the moment there is a mix, and I can't decide which is best - wikilinks might encourage folks to write those articles, but the huge number of red links don't look great. Any suggestions on any of these changes? Tafkam 13:24, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that there should be a standardised format and I broadly agree with all your suggestions. I wonder, however, if it might be best to include the location after the school's name in all cases as it might not be clear to someone not familiar with the area that Marlow Bottom for instance is a place name. With a lot of the LEAs the county is not made clear. I wonder if we ought to add a note at the beginning of each LEA which is not named after the county to say that all the schools in, say, Bracknell Forest are within the county of Berkshire. I would personally prefer to keep the use of red links to a minimum. Very few primary schools are likely to be notable enough to merit an article and so perhaps red links should be avoided altogether for primary schools. There might however be a case for red-linking secondary schools and further education establishments. If so, it would help if the links were done properly in accordance with the proposed guideline at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (schools) so that if articles are created the titles follow a consistent format. Further input with the naming guideline would also be appreciated if anyone is brave enough! Dahliarose 20:24, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
That seems to make sense to me. I'd be happy to see inclusion of a location name for each, wiki-linked as appropriate. Similarly, agree that leaving red-links only for secondary & further institutes makes sense. I have placed an example of the sort of descriptive explanation you mentioned under Bracknell Forest - makes good sense as far as I can tell. Having braved reading the discussions on Naming Conventions, I'm not sure I could cope with involvement! Tafkam 21:40, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Brilliant. I've sorted out Wokingham. I might try and do a few more tomorrow. A pity the Schools Naming Conventions can't be so straightforward! Dahliarose 23:06, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Any thoughts on independents? Should we clarify whether, prep, pre-prep, etc.? Tafkam 12:32, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- If we did, then would it make sense to break down special schools too, so that all the categories were similar? ~ Scribble Monkey 14:45, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Alphabetical order?
[edit]This list is only be worked on by individually-interested editors! This is pretty obvious in the sections - eg Kent, Medway - where the lists are not in alphabetical order: in those cases, too, there are big gaps where only some of the towns have been included.
IMO this is far too big an area to cover, without some divisions. I see that List of schools in the North West of England divides itself into separate counties: should not this? And each of the counties, certainly Kent, has its own separate lists too! With this plethora of similar articles, we do make hard work for ourselves, don't we? - I agree. I had already planned to create List of schools in East Sussex when I discovered this bloated article. I am going to go ahead with East Sussex anyway as it is going to help with my Sussex project. I think the Kent section should be removed too as it is duplicated in their own list. I will put a comment on the Kent project page to get some feedback. MortimerCat (talk) 08:41, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- This list is also part of the much bigger List of schools in the United Kingdom, which at one point started to list all the schools in the UK on the same page. We have been trying to diffuse the lists in a structured way ever since. Schools should be gradually merged into separate lists, preferably by LEA, and regional lists like this should become a list of lists. Lists should probably not be broken down any further than LEA. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- The LEA is generally the County Council, so List of schools in East Sussex would be the correct one in this case. Has there been any discussion on how the LEA list is to be arranged. For example, in East Sussex I would be tempted to have sections Rother, Wealden, Lewes (district), Eastbourne and Hastings. These are the district councils, which would make it easier to categorise the schools, although they are not really connected with education. ++ MortimerCat (talk) 10:50, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- I agree that List of schools in East Sussex would be appropriate. There are around 150 LEAs in England, and IIRC there are some anomalies in some places. For example there seems to be 19 LEAs listed in the South East, and 20 headings on this page. Lists within LEAs have generally been arranged by type of school - State primary, secondary, special, independent, further education. Some organisation by district may also be appropriate, but I'm not sure if we should lose the information about the type of school. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:14, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have corrected the error of the 19/20 local authorities - Essex was correctly listed in East of England, and should not have been included here. On the matter of breaking up into Local Authority listings, I think it might be about time to do that now with the authorities in the South East, since this page has become very long. I would prefer not to see districts used since they do not really relate to the provision of education (indeed, most authorities break up their area into regions which are not necessarily coterminous with the boroughs & districts), and because this can often cause confusion. For example, in West Sussex, schools may be listed in 'Chichester district' which are many miles from Chichester itself, and may indeed be much closer to the town of Horsham, which in itself is a separate district name. Tafkam (talk) 13:54, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have just taken a look at the other regions of England, and notice that in the West Midlands there seems to be some attempt to make LEA pages with additional information, like that at List of schools in Coventry. Would people support a move in that direction for this page? Tafkam (talk) 13:59, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- It seems there is consensus for continuing to break the lists up into LEAs, when they are ready. Division of the lists by school type seems to be preferred to division by district (though perhaps long lists that the primary school list could benefit with some structure). As a general observation, I personally find the Coventry list ugly, bloated, and not very encyclopaedic. These lists have been under constant risk of deletion, and could end up like List of schools in Hampshire (Area 1) if they become too directory-like, or too replaceable by categories. I also note List of schools in the United States has just been renominated for deletion. With this is mind, I would prefer descriptions and text to tables. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:21, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- I came to this page because the education section in Eastbourne become a list of schools and I was trying to find a way to tidy that up. I have now created the List of schools in East Sussex list, verifying it against the East Sussex County Council site. There is still some tidying required plus either the East Sussex section needs to be removed from this page or corrections made here too. (There was a Basingstoke school amongst the list!). Waiting for a consensus on the direction we are heading.
- I agree with not using districts but I did separate out Eastbourne and Hastings, mainly because it helps with my original problem. ++ MortimerCat (talk) 15:48, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps we need to reach consensus on whether or not primary schools without articles should be listed at all. If they are included, then it might be appropriate to sub-divide that category. Incidentally, I have removed the 'ceremonial' from your new article. Tafkam (talk) 16:43, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
