[edit]
Having created the List of islands of Michigan article with its innumerable islands and sub-articles, I thought it would be interesting to create a similar article for another state—Hawaii being one I've been to before in the past. I was surprised to see that no such article in any form existed, considering Hawaii is nothing but islands. Using this website, I found the names and coordinates of the islands of Hawaii. I cross-checked to make sure they were accurate. There are several discrepancies in the article that I've encountered in its creation, but none compromise the integrity and accuracy of the article:
- Some islands listed on that website have "?" in place of non-represented characters. I cross-checked other sites, but this missing character can be either an ʻOkina, a Polynesian ā, or an ō—all of these common in the Hawaiian language, which I'll admit I know nothing about with its limited characters. For example, Lānaʻi contains both but appeared on the listing website as L?na?i, where the non-standard characters are omitted. In most cases, I found the missing characters, but I lament that all of them aren't solidly accurate. I tried my best to write words in their original Hawaiian name with these characters, because after all, the world is not English.
- The coordinates appear to be off by miniscule proportions. I used the coordinates listed on the site, and checked other maps to ensure that the island really did exist. But, there are some instances where coordinates were off by fractions of a second. This is important since some islands are no larger than a mere rock sticking above the surface. So, off coordinates show you the ocean with a tiny object nearby. This seemed especially noticeable in the islands of the French Frigate Shoals. I used Google Earth to correct some of these tiny errors, but I haven't gone through and changed some, which usually includes something as mundane as changing an island's coordinates about 50 meters from 21.17861°N 156.88889°W to 21.17861°N 156.88901°W.
- The total amount of islands might be off. I guarantee that there are some islands that aren't named, but my total count came to 152. For example, the French Frigate Shoals, Mokulua Islands, and Mokumanu Islands consist of multiple islands, even if they are listed in their own right. Those names were not included in the count. Also, even though Midway Atoll is not part of Hawaii, it is part of the chain and received special mention in this article. However, there is no island named "Midway Island" or "Midway Atoll". According to various maps, the atoll consists of three (maybe four) separately named islands. So, I can't say the 152 number is definitive and is therefore listed as an approximation.
If anyone has any corrections to make, I welcome it and hope this article provides some use. — ♣№tǒŖïøŭş4lĭfė♫♪ 02:52, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
K kaimanini Island?
[edit]I changed K Kaimanini island to Kukaimanini. It makes no sense and it was probably an error with kahakō in the "u".

Two problems with mentions of Midway Atoll islands
[edit]Note these two portions of the page: (1) "The state of Hawaii officially recognizes only 137 islands in the state which includes four islands of the Midway Atoll." and (2) "Large Islands: Approximately 8 islands (including 4 of the Midway Atoll)"
Number 1 implies that Hawaii claims the four islands in the Midway Atoll, which multiple wiki pages (and other sources) dispute. Is it possible that "state" should be "chain"; I.E. "...only recognizes 137 islands in the chain..."?
Number 2 implies that there are 8 large islands *including* the 4 islands in the Midway Atoll. There are 8 large islands in the state of Hawaii and that doesn't include the ones in the Midway Atoll. Again, I'm not sure what was meant here. The 4 islands of the Midway Atoll are not in the state of Hawaii but are in the chain of islands.
So, I'm pretty certain that these two areas are wrong but I'm not sure how to correct them. Can someone who is more familiar with the geography, and possibly more familiar with the intent of the author, please clean this up?

List of Islands turned into a list of counties
[edit]Why is it that when I come here looking for a list of Islands, I instead see a list of Counties? Seems like this article lost its way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.125.19.127 (talk) 23:44, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- Agreed that the county-based list isn't as helpful as it could be, given the distance between Oahu and the other Honolulu-County islands. -- Michael Scott Asato Cuthbert (talk) 08:05, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
Changes Dec 2024
[edit]A contribution by User:Yes Yes NoNoNo has added a lot of information about some Northwestern Islands, but now there are two charts with about the same information next to each other. It'd be simple to merge the information if every island had a land area and highest elevation point, but they don't. Anyone strongly in favor of rejecting the change or accepting it so that the Nortwestern island list has some island with more information than others? I will probably go with the latter version if no one objects. -- Michael Scott Asato Cuthbert (talk) 08:04, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- I looked more closely. Yes Yes tried to make some serious contributions but overall too much information was wiped without a reason esp. for County of Hawai'i. A few links look like tests (like making "The" link to "Ford Island), and some look like positive contributions, but overall lots of information removed, much changed without a comment why. Feel like reverting is safer at this point. -- Michael Scott Asato Cuthbert (talk) 08:32, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
Changes Dec, 11, 2024
[edit]So I added sizes to the original chart. I also updated it since it contained a few errors. For one Ahu'Olaka Island and Coral Island are both part of the Kaneohe Sandbars which submerge during hightide which means that they aren't islands and just sandbars. I could not find the names to several different islands near Honolulu Harbor and Sand Island so I did not list them. I could not find the Banzai Rocks on Google Earth though after searching though the web I found them near Pupukea but still could not discern which ones they were so I decided to leave out their size. The Wananapaoa Islands i've located after publishing the changes so i'll come back to fix it soon. Anyway I did this to provide more info on the Islands such as their size to give the reader more information than just there name and coordinates. I also will continue with other charts over the next couple weeks. --Yes Yes NoNoNo. Yes Yes NoNoNo (talk) 18:46, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
Edits for chart on December, 11, 2024
[edit]I decided to add a blurb for each island. I put a question mark over Banzai Rocks since I still have not figured out what rock they are. Also if anyone has any info for these rocks please come foward. They are near Waimea Bay and the town of Pupukea. There is not much sense as to why Mokulua Islands are listed when Moku Iki and Moku Nui are already listed in the same list. Yes Yes NoNoNo (talk) 00:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
More Info Needed-December, 12, 2024
[edit]I putting out the call for more information about the Banzai Rocks in Honolulu County and Kalanipuao Rock in Kauai County. If anyone has any info please respond on this talk page.-- Yes Yes NoNoNo (talk) 19:56, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
Major/inhabited islands first?
[edit]I do wonder if this List article really buries the lede -- I would expect that an article titled "List of islands of Hawaii" would have the eight major islands listed first (maybe make the table in Hawaiian Islands#Major islands a shared template that can be used here too?) and then have the smaller islands listed afterwards. It feels unusual to find Oahu and Maui buried in a very large table (even if they are bolded). The listing at the end of the second prose paragraph seems too hard to find. -- Michael Scott Asato Cuthbert (talk) 23:27, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
