Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on List of fictional countries. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. Notability

Just wondering if we can agree a simple notability guideline for this list.

I'd suggest that requiring a fictional country to have its own WP page would be too strict. However, it seems reasonable to require every entry to have a WP page for the work; after all, if the fictional country is notable, the work in which it is mentioned will certainly be. If the work is notable, it'll have its own WP page. Bromley86 (talk) 19:32, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

On a similar note, should every fictional country be added here? There is also List of fictional African countries, List of fictional American countries, and similar lists for Asia, Europe, and Island nations. Should all these lists be combined, or should they be left separate? Should this list include all the countries from the other lists? Natg 19 (talk) 00:37, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
The good news is that those articles are a good fit with this one, as originally conceived. This article limits the inclusion to:
Fictional works describe all the countries in the following list as located somewhere on the surface of the Earth as we know it — as opposed to underground, inside the planet, on another world, or during a different "age" of the planet with a different physical geography.
That was in the article almost from the start. It was removed by an IP a couple of years ago, and added back by me recently. I'm happy to talk about removing it, but it does need to be talked about. By definition, those articles fit with that requirement.
It does seem insane to effectively manage separate sets of data; we'll never have a decent set if we try that, as someone will always add to the American article, for example, without thinking to also add to this one. A good example of that is the Caribbean section in the American article: 3 entries. Compare to the Caribbean section in the Island Nations article.
Is there an issue with article size if we did merge everything? I wonder if it'd be better to treat this page as a redicter to the sub pages, which'd then allow for non-earth country pages to be linked to. Bromley86 (talk) 04:30, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Please stop adding countries that do not meet the criteria. Thank you. Verified Cactus (talk) 19:37, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Re-addition of "purged" countries?

I have been reading through the talk page archives and I have noticed that @Ncboy2010: and @RandomCritic: have purged many items from the list. I have also noticed that many of them do indeed meet the criteria, and so should be eligible for re-entry. How should we approach this? Verified Cactus (talk) 00:11, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

The reasons for the deletions I made are all clearly stated in the first talk archive. If they are felt to be inaccurate, or if the criteria have changed, please discuss. I can't speak to any other deletions that were made by other persons.RandomCritic (talk) 01:00, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Game of Thrones?

Not a fan myself, but just wondering if the Game of Thrones countries belong in this article? The show isn't mentioned on the "Fantasy Worlds" Wikipedia page, either--surely it belongs on one or the other? Thoughts? Apruzan (talk) 00:33, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

The world of A Song of Ice and Fire does not take place on Earth, and as such, does not belong on this list. It would be better suited on that other page. The Verified Cactus 100% 18:39, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

On the subject of notability and James H. Cobb

@Graham1973:

The creator of the character Amanda Garret is not un-noteable read for example John Birminghams Weapons of Choice trilogy where there is a ship (and class of ships) named in honor of the author and his very successful creation. Just because he died in 2014 and created a strong female character does not make him 'unnotable'

None of what you said makes Cobb notable. While I concede that a quick google search seems to turn up enough results to make him notable, he doesn't have a Wikipedia page. If neither the work the country comes from or the creator of the work have a Wikipedia page, they shouldn't be on the list. The Verified Cactus 100% 01:08, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Fictional countries from non-Earth

Hi, I mistaken added months ago Kalos from Pokémon. The user SimplyMashedPotatoes delete it because isn't from Earth. My question is... why are in this list (for example) Bowser's Kingdom, Sarasa Land and Mushroom Kingdom from Super Mario, if they are from a fictional world named "Mushroom World" and not from Earth itself?

Geography now countries (redo)

  • Disclaimer* This is a redo of when I previously posted this section, but I forgot the signature, since I'm new to Wikipedia. But without further ado, here's the section:

I noticed that you have Bandiaterra, an april fool's country from Geography Now, on the list, but Geography Now has made more fictional countries to celebrate April fool's since. These include: Limberwisk, The Confederation of Patch Amberdash, and Qitzikwaka, with him saying that a country called "The Voskodon Republic" coming next April fool's (I'm not sure if I got the spelling for the last one right, so please correct me if I'm wrong). --JH2006 (talk) 15:49, 15 October 2020 (UTC) EDIT: I actually looked closer and saw Limberwisk on there, but Patch Amberdash and Qitzikwaka still have yet to appear on the list. Destroido from Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated

Destroido is a corporation in Scooby Doo! Mystery incorporated lead by Ricky Owens, alias Mr. E. It's introduction episode doesn't say it is a country, but in a later episode, both Crystal Cove's mayor and sheriff directly say that it is a sovereign entity, meaning the sheriff can't arrest anyone and people need a Destroido passport to go on the property. --JH2006 (talk) 16:19, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

The new Geography Now april fool's country

Today for April Fool's Day, Geography Now made a new video detailing a fictional country originally called he "Voskodon Republic" but now calls "Sovonthak," a floating country that recently got its independence and is the only country in the world with a mix of Spanish and Cambodian. --JH2006 (talk) 20:35, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

All of the Geography Now countries.

Ok. Seriously. I made those edits about Geography Now's April Fool's countries months ago, and while Qitziqwaka has been added, weirdly enough Bandiaterra and Limberwisk have been removed and the other 2, the Confederation of Patch Amberdash (alternatively Datcsh) and Sovonthak haven't been added. I'm just wondering why they aren't on there. I seriously hope they get added. --JH2006 (talk) 18:30, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Remove Zeon?

Zeon, from Mobile Suit Gundam, refers to any of a series of fictional nations (see Gundam Wiki disambig page), none of which are countries on Earth. They have colonies in space, but never on Earth itself. However, according to the article description,

Fictional works describe all the countries in the following list as located somewhere on the surface of the Earth as we know it – as opposed to underground, inside the planet, on another world, or during a different "age" of the planet with a different physical geography.

As such, should we remove it from the article? Eunakria (talk) 02:52, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

Can we split this list into separate articles?

I feel like this is not really a good reference for anything one might want a list of fictional countries for, because it mixes countries from works of secondary-world fiction, countries invented for parody, countries invented as part of scams, and countries invented for military exercises. I can't think of a situation where someone looking for a list of references would want all of these in one place. ScribblingTiresias (talk) 00:15, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

I don't think the Discworld locations belong in this list, as they are not "on the surface of the earth as we know it" but on "a flat planet balanced on the backs of four elephants which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle" (quote from the Wikipedia article on Discworld). 2A0A:A546:BEAA:0:AD10:811:B0C3:D92D (talk) 14:41, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Should fictional US Native American reservations be included? And should Nation of Hawaii from "Hawaii Five-0" be included?

Hi. I am wondering on two matters. I'm including them into one thread because they kinda connected. So, about the first thing. Should Native American reservations in the US be included? According to Wikipedia "Indian reservation is an area of land held and governed by a U.S. federal government-recognized Native American tribal nation, whose government is semi-sovereign, subject to regulations passed by the United States Congress and administered by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, and not to the U.S. state government in which it is located". Which kinda sounds like depending territory not fully within a country. And this list already includes a few fictional dependencies and even micronations. And as such I was wondering if Indian reservations should be included as well.

And about second part of my question. I includ it here because it inspired this whole topic. The episode "Ka Laina Ma Ke One" of the Hawaii Five-0 (2010 TV series) features fictional entity of the Nation of Hawaii. It is described as sovereign land outside the state jurisdiction. It is a small community with its own government and border guard. The way they talk about it in the episode makes me think that it is treated as if it has the status of Native reservation (though it isn't really said directly in the show). As such, I'm wondering if it deserves to be included on this list or not.

Also, btw, I think in the episode they use the flag for this entity, but kind find any pictures online. If someone could find some pictures/screenshots of it, I would be greatfull, as I'm trying to add svg images of fictional flags to this article.

Well, this text to quite long. If you read all of this, thank you :) Hope to hear other's options. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 16:15, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Should Ambrosia from Billy Liar be on the list?

Hi, I have removed Ambrosia from Billy Liar from the list. The country in the book and subsequent media is just made up in stories/games made by titular child character, and not an actual state existing within the fictional universe of the book. Do you think it should be added back to the list? Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:31, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
