Unsubstantiated claim of "not reliable sources"
[edit]The user User:LaffyTaffer Removed 2 citations that I have added with the comment "Not reliable sources". The 2 sources are:
- IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6556403/bio/
- The actual YouTube video of Josh Seiter's interview with Alex Stein where he revealed that his transition was a hoax (as written in the text next to the footnote): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He8_JnqURnw
I don't want to start an edit war, but I do think that both sources are reliable (IMDb which is used everywhere on Wikipedia and a primary source on YouTube) and the 2 citations should be restored.

- I have restored the youtube link, thanks for calling that out. Youtube videos tend not to be reliable sources in other contexts. IMDB on the other hand is user generated, meaning it's not a reliable source, see WP:IMDB. If you see imdb citations, they should be removed. (with exceptions). - Thank you for restoring the youtube link.
- Regarding IMDb, this is a reference to Josh Seiter's date and place of birth. I don't think that this is "potentially contentious". I think it should be accepted under the same criteria that are stated here.
- Compare also the following quotation: "A verified social media account of an article subject saying about themselves something along the lines of "today is my 50th birthday" may fall under self-published sources for purposes of reporting a full date of birth. It may be usable if there is no reason to doubt it." (Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Privacy_of_personal_information_and_using_primary_sources)
- I wouldn't think that any of the following links would be considered more reliable, but they all have the same information: 14 August 1987, Chicago, Illinois (which I don't think anyone doubts):

- I think that there are situations where an incorrect date/place of birth can be contentious(as an example that falls under pure vandalism, claiming Barack Obama was born in the middle east), so I often remove unsourced or poorly sourced instances of those claims.
- The claims of his birth date/place here don't seem egregiously controversial, which is why I've left it up with a cn tag, but considering all of the sources you've linked are listed as unreliable at WP:RSP, I don't think they should be added, even though they're likely true. A reliable(or at the very least not unreliable) source should be found instead. LaffyTaffer (talk) 17:27, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm more than open to getting a third opinion on this though, if you'd prefer. LaffyTaffer (talk) 17:31, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Ok. Lulu-lists (talk) 17:48, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- In my view, exactly because the claims of his birth date/place are not controversial, the user created content of IMDb should be accepted, similarly to the way social media content is accepted in such cases (non-controversial claims about birth date/place of living people).
- But I also think it's not worth a lengthy debate. The youtube link was in fact much more important to me. We can leave it at that.
- Lulu-lists (talk) 17:55, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm fine with the claim staying up there with a citation needed tag for now(though I'll probably remove it if it stays that way in a few months), it's just that the sources listed aren't acceptable for that citation. I'll freely admit though that my standard of "controversial" might be stricter than what WP policy demands, so it's entirely possible that I'm in the wrong here.
- I agree though that the youtube link was the more important thing to call me out on removing(thanks again). LaffyTaffer (talk) 18:41, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
