Please upload images to commons (if possible), and add [[Category:Hurricane Dennis]] to them. That category is linked from the article, and has a reasonable amount of content at the moment. — jdorje (talk) 22:27, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

It's not particularly obvious that "storm" links to tropical cyclone in the intro. Maybe we should change the text to "named tropical cyclone"? — jdorje (talk) 23:34, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, except that it may be wrong since subtropical cyclones get named too, in which case the link from "storm" is also wrong (or at least misleading). So maybe the "storm" link should just be dropped and the link should come from "hurricane". — jdorje (talk) 23:35, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Death toll

[edit]

That indirect total may not be entirely accurate. It's source is a FEMA site that was made shortly after the disaster. Reports at that time were sketchy at best. We might want to find another, more recent source to back that up. The National Hurricane Center lists only the indirect toll for the US, which is twelve. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 18:29, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Dennis Rainfall Image

[edit]

Is there a particular reason the new color filled rainfall image for Dennis was removed? I've been noticing a slow elimination of the rainfall images from Wikipedia, and Dennis was the latest victim. If there was a flaw with it, let me know. Thegreatdr 21:08, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is pretty impressive

[edit]

Not only was Dennis the first major hurricane to strike the US prior to August since Audrey in '57, it was also the first major hurricane to strike the US in July since 1916. That's nearly 90 years without a major hurricane striking the US in July. Woodrow Wilson was president, the US was a year from entering WWI, women couldn't vote, daylight savings didn't exist and income tax was a new idea. That's pretty remarkable. Check the Best Track, you'll see that I'm right. -- HurricaneERIC - Class of '08: XVII Maius MMVIII 22:27, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Idea - merge all of the sub-articles but the met. history?

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result was: merge all sub-articles. Users came to a consensus and as a result, OP went ahead with the merge. ~ Sandy14156 (Talk ✉️) 03:00, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look at this article, and it's a shame that it's only start-class, because most of the content only exists in the sub-articles (effects of Hurricane Dennis in...) - the sub-articles are mostly pretty good, which made me curious what it would look like if they were all combined. Presenting:

Draft:Hurricane Dennis

With barely any editing, I combined all of the sub-articles and put the information in the respective sections. It's under 8,000 words, which is the point when you might want to split off an article. That's why I kept the met history out of it. That's easily the most scientific and wonky part of an article, but unless you're a meteorologist, you might not care about all of the minor twists and turns and why they happened. Otherwise, I think the proposed draft with all of the areas merged in looks very good, like how you'd expect a featured hurricane article to look. Does anyone have any thoughts? Pinging @Juliancolton: since you wrote a few of the effects articles. I wanted to gauge some thoughts before formally proposing merging seven articles. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:47, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Support - effects articles should be reserved for the most impactful and damaging storms (Sandy, Katrina, etc.) For a storm like Dennis, its page is kinda short since the majority of the impacts are in sub articles that were made in the 2000s. MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 22:13, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support all except Florida and Jamaica since they have the most information with over 50 textual citations. The rest can and should be merged, but merging all of it does risk the article being overly bloated. Downerr2937 (talk) 23:46, 30 June 2024 (UTC) Downerr2937 (talkcontribs) is blocked as a sock puppet of Andrew5 (talkcontribs). ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 20:34, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Downerr2937 (talk · contribs), check out the draft I posted. I included all of the info from both of those places. Parts that are bloated can always be rewritten a bit for organizational flow. Jamaica is only four paragraphs, and five for Florida. This is without having done almost any editing to any of the sections, other than combining a few sections. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:52, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The draft is 48 kilobytes of prose, which is permitted by WP:SIZERULE. That being said, it also has WP:DUE weight problems, and while the Florida portion of it is fine, I think the Jamaica portion of it gives it undue weight compared to the impacts in Haiti. Thus, support a merger for all subarticles except Effects of Hurricane Dennis in Jamaica, which I think should remain. Downerr2937 (talk) 12:28, 6 July 2024 (UTC) Downerr2937 (talkcontribs) is blocked as a sock puppet of Andrew5 (talkcontribs). ChrisWx 🌀 (talk - contribs) 20:34, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Downerr2937: - I reorganized the Jamaica information a bit, trimming it down to two paragraphs. There were some lengthy bits that didn't add much, like specifying the airport name in Kingston (which wasn't even the location of the strongest winds). I streamlined other information so it wouldn't be so long. What do you think now? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:54, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OK I have formally proposed merging all of the sub-articles. The draft, listed above, shows how the article would look merging the effects articles in. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:14, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Support per discussion, note also that while the main article here gets ~5,700 views/month, the splitted off sections get ~50-220 views/month, which is significantly wasted potential --TheImaCow (talk) 18:53, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support per above ZZZ'S 19:00, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support - The article after merging the sub-articles isn't too long and this will greatly help it be more detailed to be viewed by more people. ~ Sandy14156 (Talk ✉️) 22:48, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing no major opposition, I'm going to go ahead and start doing this. Thanks everyone for the feedback. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:00, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To do list to improve Dennis back to featured article status

[edit]

Now that all of the sub-articles are merged, the Dennis article covers a lot more information. It's much better than where it was at before, but still could use work, such as:

Also, all of the images need to be checked. The FEMA images need properly working URL's, I just noticed. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:00, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The lead has been expanded. We can mark that off the to-do list. Also, should we promote it to GA first? ZZZ'S 21:57, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, struck that. And yea, the same issues will affect GA or FAC, like dead links. So once the article is stable and closed to finished, it'll go to GAN before FAC. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:04, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the article might merit the B-class assessment. I'm unsure about the sixth criteria of WP:B?. Let me know what you think so I can change it if necessary. ZZZ'S 22:14, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My biggest worry is long term aftermath, something that likely isn't covered right now. For example, Cuba's Energy Revolution, or rebuilding/aftermath along the panhandle. Cuba's impacts need to be expanded too. Those are the biggest things holding back the article right now. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All right. I'll reevaluate the article once those problems are addressed. ZZZ'S 22:22, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just want to check on your progress for this articles, what tasks you completed, and other issues that need tackling before nominating for GA status. ZZZ'S 04:10, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are still 66 deadlinks (if not more) that need to be replaced. Otherwise, I'm still working my way through Florida and the rest of the US, and expanding a bit to make sure there's nothing important missing. Because of there being so many dead links, I had to restart from scratch, and I've found more info to add to the article. A lot of the links were predictable, like NCDC or anything with Associated Press. So this one might take a little bit. The GA's that were merged are almost entirely made of broken links. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 04:48, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. I'll continue to repair the source links for the files, then grammar check each section once you're done expanding. ZZZ'S 04:48, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All of the images have a working link. In addition, I've went ahead and added alt text. They may be a bit on the long side, but I'm sure you can condense them. ZZZ'S 23:15, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome, thanks for doing that. While working through the article, I'm trying to streamline where I can, keeping the existing info and expanding when I can, and only give specific examples of location damage if they're particularly interesting or unique. As for sections that are done, I'm finished with the US other than Florida. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:07, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you've stopped expanding the article. Are you finished? ZZZ'S 01:55, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nah nowhere close, still 34 dead links. Part of the work is replacing the URL's, and part of it is expanding where information is missing. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:19, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bad wording. I meant to say if you're finished expanding Cuba, both impacts and the aftermath. ZZZ'S 18:33, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
*cough* ZZZ'S 19:13, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lol, I'm still working my way through a few archives of sources, and I'll want to use the newspaper archive to check for anything else that might be missing. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:26, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. Let me know when you finish so I can copyedit it. ZZZ'S 19:29, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Minor update. I finished redoing Florida's part of the impact section, so every link is now working, including a few from archived versions of websites. I think I'm going to continue with impacts and work my way backwards, trying to tackle Cuba. And then later on I'll do preps/aftermath. I've also realized that, with all of the effects sub-articles having similar types of impacts (federal disaster funding, FEMA resources), there'll be some overlap, so the aftermath should probably have more of a top-down focus on the national level, going across state lines, rather than going state by state. I'd also like to give a major kudos/thanks to Juliancolton (talk · contribs) for writing all of these articles in the first place, and doing all of that research for the storm's effects in the US. That's making this a lot easier than, say, Hurricane Stan, which is still sitting in a tab in my browser because of all of the information still in need to be added ._. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:00, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome. Since there's not much for me to do with the article other than copyedits, which will best work after you finish expanding, I'll work on a different article (Hurricane Emily) and improve it since Wilma is virtually at FP class. (Maybe we can create a List of Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes FT, but now would not be a good time) ZZZ'S 23:29, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree Wilma is probably pretty close. I know 12george1 (talk · contribs) was working on that a bit, so he might have some insight what that article needs before a GAN. And I agree, a Cat 5 hurricane FT would be good down the road. If that got done, then getting all of the retired storms would be a lot more doable. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:49, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OK at this point I'm pretty happy with the article. I think most of the deadlinks are worth keeping, since I can't find another source for the same information, and it's good stuff for the most part. I therefore have nominated it for GAN. Thanks for the help so far Zzzs (talk · contribs). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:03, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, @Hurricanehink. I'll be there for its FAC. I can't wait. ZZZ'S 02:06, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright. The GAN is finished and Dennis is now a GA. What will be the new to-do list for FA, @Hurricanehink? ZZZ'S 14:08, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For the FA, I couldn't find more info about Cuba and the energy revolution. Also, have you heard of The Wikipedia Library? If so, do you use it? ZZZ'S 22:29, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yea I’ve used the Wikipedia library. Part of the search will have to be in Spanish, so that might take a bit to go through. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 23:07, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricanehink, how's the Cuba task going? ZZZ'S 16:02, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have a few tabs open in my browser, and found a lot of good sources. Just haven't had the time lately for the research/writing (I've been rehearsing for a show). If you're wondering what's next for the 2005 project, I'd guess that Wilma is closer to GAN than Dennis is to FAC. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:04, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't the information in the United States' impact section and NOT its subsections be expanded to include all of the general impacts from each state combined? ZZZ'S 01:52, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricanehink How about now? It's been a week and I just want to check on the progress. ZZZ'S 23:03, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, sorry for my reduced contributions to the topic. I've been busy trying to improve the articles listed in the List of Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes and the List of retired Atlantic hurricanes by asking TheWxResearcher, a frequent uploader of tropical cyclone images, to upload new photos of the tropical cyclone during certain, often important, meteorological events (see Hurricane Dorian and its subarticles) to improve the article and image quality. ZZZ'S 23:23, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, once I can fix those NCDC links that are duplicated by accident (I must have put in the wrong links), then I will nom Dennis for FAC. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:14, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. I wish you the best of luck. Also, once you put it up for nomination, can you rewrite the Louisiana section in Effects of Hurricane Katrina in the Southeastern United States like I asked earlier? I'm repeating it to make sure you did not forget. ZZZ'S 20:21, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ugggggggh, working on Katrina articles is like getting your teeth pulled. I'll get around to it eventually. Like I said, don't have the most amount of time now, and the LA section is a low priority considering there are tons of places to get info about Katrina in Louisiana, and it's gonna be a huge undertaking organizing all of the Katrina info. We still have to get through Rita, Stan, and Wilma. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:53, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I'll wait until the topic is complete, which I will get around to when I feel like it and when I'm ready (school is really taking a toll on me). ZZZ'S 21:57, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]
  • For a storm that caused a lot of damage across the Caribbean and the United States, the first sentence makes it look like a generic storm.
  • A total of 59 homes were damaged or destroyed, causing significant harm to Haiti's agricultural industry. Did the homes being damaged affect the industry? Also, it says 59 but in the Impact section, it states that The storm wrecked 929 homes and damaged 3,058 others...
  • I would incorporate some of the aftermath into the lead section.

Meteorological history

[edit]
  • The hurricane subsequently traversed the Jamaica Channel, bringing deadly floods to both Jamaica and Haiti Is the last part needed?
  • The powerful storm soon struck Granma Province, Cuba, as a Category 4 hurricane early on July 8; violent winds battered the province and caused extensive damage. Ditto.

Preparations, impact, and aftermath

[edit]
  • Got nothing for preparations.
  • To prevent damage to the damage of electric generation stations, power was halted nationwide... Remove "damage of".
  • The hurricane damaged Dennis also affected the agriculture industry... Needs to be reworded.
  • The high waves destroyed sea turtle's nests, with 61 nests destroyed in Pinellas County. to The high waves destroyed 61 sea turtle nests in Pinellas County.
  • The floodaters breached a dam near Fayetteville and another in Tift County... change "floodaters" to floodwaters.
  • Got nothing for aftermath.

      • 84 says that 60 turtle nests were destroyed, not 61.
  • Still need to check the format and if there is any OR.
    • I don't think there is any OR.
    • 49 doesn't work. Add an archive link and label the original as dead.
    • For 72, I would add Reuters as the author since that's what the newspaper borrowed info from.
