virtual boy

[edit]

i see nothing mentioned about the virtual boy. shouldn't that belong somewhere?--ZeWrestler Talk 17:04, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

my two cents: reading the virtual boy article, it says that it wasn't particularily portable and that playing while walking etc was impossible. the items in Handheld video game are so far all portable, and while I don't think I would walk while playing on my PSP one could. So, I would say that it doesn't nessecarily belong here. We could make an article Nintendo Poorly Thought Out Gaming Innovations and put it in there, though. :) --Syrthiss 17:20, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

history

[edit]

Shouldn't most if not all of that go into handheld game console? If this is a superset of handheld consoles as it seems to be positioning itself to be, it should also cover gaming on PDAs, phones, calculators and other nonstandard equipment and perhaps more on notable software than the hardware that's already covered in the handheld console article. --24.114.252.183 04:17, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I realized that as well, I'll move into that. Handheld video game should cover major genres of handheld video games --larsinio 13:01, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Trading Card RPG

[edit]

Does the Trading Card RPG section really belong here?--ZeWrestler Talk 14:37, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw the header and added to it. I'd say yes; these games are far more popular on handhelds than consoles, and so they deserve special note. Kertrats | Talk 14:58, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

However, the bit at the end of the section about Pokemon is referring to the RPGs, not the Trading card game. Not sure what to do there, as adding an RPG section is self-defeating ot the description in the 'Preferred Genres' intro. Kertrats | Talk 17:15, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bedazzled

[edit]

I've never heard of a game called Bedazzled: is it possible the editor meant Bejeweled? --Sum0 11:00, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In all likelihood, it's an unlicensed Bejeweled ripoff; I'll change it. Kertrats | Talk 14:25, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Clockwork games?

[edit]

Shouldn't this article, or at least somewhere, cover those strange handheld (presumably) clockwork games that act like video games? Like those wind-up turtles games that Tomy made in the 1990s? I'd really like to learn more about these, but it's hard to find much mention of them online at all. Xmoogle (talk) 19:56, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This article is horrible.

[edit]

This article is absolutely horrible and needs a complete redo.

It begins by saying, 'handheld gaming was kind of popular in the 70's and 80's, but then the Gameboy,' and then goes on to more or less be an article about the Gameboy. Where are references about other handheld systems? Anything before the Gameboy? This is my first Wikipedia contribution or I'd help fix this abysmal trash of an article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.82.124.144 (talk) 21:43, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Page Expansion

[edit]

I see the main problem with this page as a lack of information, not a failure to organize it or a failure to meet MoS. As a result I'm just looking at how to actually add content to this article. I'm identifying some key places in this post.

IF YOU MAKE EDITS BASED ON MY SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE COMMENT. That will make it easier for other editors to see what has been implemented and what hasn't been.

Intro:

  • What is the current market share of the handheld sector? 2004 is a long time ago in computers and none of the consoles made then are even relevant today (economically)
  • Consider moving this somewhere else altogether. This para doesn't fit well in the intro

History

  • Needs a longer transition from handheld electronic games to Game Boy. How and why did single-game hardware move over a span of decades to multi-game hardware? Did that really happen in a single jump to GameBoy?
  • Why was Tetris the killer application? Why could GameBoy do it and not its predecessors? Was this a rights issue or a technology issue?
  • Needs an actual history of newer consoles, but from a feature-introduction perspective. We aren't telling the history of every console, we are telling the evolution of the platforms that these games are played on so that we can talk about how the games evolve. Every console mentioned needs to have examples like Tetris.
  • Look at how controls, screen tech (like color displays), battery tech, connectivity (like IR), the use of operating systems (now with multitasking!) rather than running on bare metal, and game storage tech (PSP is hardly mentioned in this article) influenced the evolution of games. What landmark games relied on these controls? On color? What games could only fit on the new cartridges for the new console? Did storage tech relate to an increase in texture sizes?
  • Explain the transition to mobile games in detail and the place of mobile games in the gaming market. Just needs a paragraph.
  • Give a brief nod to the status quo. Explain the players in the market today and what will come next
  • Emulation needs to fit into this scheme somewhere. I'd start by including it in the "Today" subsection, and if it expands it might need to move elsewhere.

Popular Genres

  • I did some work here but it's not done at all. Needs loads of citations. It also needs some ideas to be reorganized--big, all-encompassing ideas at the top, and smaller, more specific ideas at the bottom.
  • This whole section (actually the article) has a big Nintendo bias. I do too so I can't really help. Just add more games that represent other companies, like Sony, Sega, and mobile.
  • RPG needs to be separate from whatever anime discussion is happening in there. I think that anime needs to be discussed as a result of handhelds being popularized in Japanese markets by Japanese companies, rather than trying to imply that anime has some connection to RPG games.
  • I don't know what's going on in the Classic section. It needs cleanup and sources.
  • Card games should probably represent the Yu-Gi-Oh games and any other trading card games as well.
  • Should there be a racing games section? I think so!

Features unique to handheld gaming

  • First off, this header sucks. I propose "Unique features" instead
  • Handheld-Handheld links needs to talk about all of the new things like streetpass and so on.
  • Home console linking needs to include PS Vita and Nintendo Switch. Should probably also give examples of games that use them, since Pokemon Stadium is really old.
  • Multi-tasking is cleaned up a little bit, but it needs information on actual software multi-tasking.
  • Needs a new section for location-based features. I'm looking at Pokemon Go, but there are other examples as well.
  • Maybe include a line for all the crazy things people have done with modded PSPs. Not sure if it's relevant to this article or this section.

Availability

  • I'm not really sure what this first section is trying to do. It's good, but I'm not sure how it fits. Needs some better transition I guess
  • Multipurpose... seems decent. I'm not really sure what I'd change here.
  • Geographic location needs a huge section here. All or most of the companies that make handheld games are Japanese. This leads to some major availability issues between regions. This section needs to mention translations, censoring, some games never leaving Japan, and Europe often getting left out.
  • language may be big enough to need its own section but it probably fits into geographic location
