Removal of "Coll Slang"

[edit]

I have removed the "Coll Slang" section of this article as it unfortunately violates several Wikipedia policies and guidelines.

You may also want to see the user essay Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day for further explanation on why this material is not suited for an encyclopedia article on your school, and why it should be excluded, along with elaborations on how the above policies apply.

-- saberwyn 08:18, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Saberwyn-i have read the above policies pertaining to the fact that the coll slang was unverifiable and that only once the usages listed had been published would they be valid for inclusion in Wikipedia. I agree that Wikipedia should not be a site for people to post their new crazt fads and fashions-there are plenty of other sites that this can be done on. However these terms and usages have in some cases been used for over fifty years, with subsequent generations picking up the terms from their predeccessors. Does this not provide some validity to their actual existance. Also as stated in the actual article many other public schools have similar "slang" or "jargon" e.g. Eton, and while these may have been printed and published is this not more to do with the worldwide popularity of the school rather than there slang being any more "real" than that of this college's. It seems a slightly unfair way of selecting what goes into wikipedia and what doesnt. Just because one researchers progress and final result gains more worldwide acclaim and therefore more publishment does not mean it is of any more worth than a smaller and less publicised research conclusion. On another note, if you are to take out "Coll Slang" due to its unverifiability then surelt you must also remove -"The school is affectionally known as "coll" by both pupils and staff" asthere is asfar as i know no verifiable source for this statement.

    • Okay, I concede that maybe removing unsourced and externally unverifiable lists of words and their possible usage is not the best thing to do when producing an encyclopedia article. I'll leave your article alone now. -- saberwyn 11:41, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why thank you.

Now that Saberwyn has finally gone back to his role-playing games, can someone tell me where home drive is?Hippo43 17:46, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Who are you Hippo43-you seem to know enough about coll to know about KBing etc yet do not know where Home Drive is? Where you there or are you just another boring intruder into Glenalmond. (like the role playing joke though!)

Boring intruder?? I am Hippo43 - who the hell are you?? You haven't signed your comments (type ~ 4 times after your comment). You'll just have to take my word for it that I know Glenalmond very well - a look at some of my earlier edits, where I have added more detail about Coll, should confirm this to even the most hardened sceptic. I may be showing my age - Home Drive makes sense now, though didn't exist when I was around - the earlier edit said 'home drive' (without capitals), so seemed pretty vague.Hippo43 11:26, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh right-because Hippo43 really lets everyone know who you are. I'm the person who wrote the detailed and eloquent argument above that persuaded saberwyn to leave this site alone. To be honest I was just making sure you weren't another loser like saberwyn and now that you have mentioned your age it all seems clear, as it is almost impossible to go through a coll career without knowing about it's location. I'm terribly sorry to have doubted you and you must accept my apologies-just making sure you werent Strath or anything. And i have signrd off aswell. 202.183.109.9 02:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Hippo43 doesn't reveal terribly much, but coming from someone who signs off as "202.183.109.9" (which reveals nothing besides a location in Australia) that does smack a little of hypocrisy... When even OGs don't recognise the reference to 'Home Drive' (which I presume is what was Lothian Drive even when I left in '98), perhaps a little clarification is in order? This list is starting to look ridiculous - a list of places around Coll with weird names (Mad Wifey's, Sheepwash, Sandeman's, Neish's ...) is different from slang that has arisen over many years (phys, docket...), as well as slang terms that have only been used fairly recently and are not unique to Glenalmond. Perhaps we should split this into 2 new sections - one covering places around Coll and the other with slang words, perhaps with the era they were/are used in brackets.ThePerthshireRipper 17:42, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that this is a very good idea as at the moment the list is becoming very confusing and not at all helpful. There should be two separate lists-one for the slang that has originated or stuck in Glenalmond followed by a date when it first cameinto use with another list for odd names and nicknames for areas around coll.surely the person who started the list in the first place would not like to have it made as convoluted and complicated as this?

This information is still in violation of Wikipedia's key policy of verifiability, and made-up nonsense is being continually added to it. I suspect most of it has been simply made up. I have removed it. -- zzuuzz (talk) 23:12, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prestigious?

[edit]

Do they still teach English at Coll? From [1] -

prestigious -

adj 1: having an illustrious reputation; respected; "our esteemed leader"; "a prestigious author" [syn: esteemed, honored] 2: exerting influence by reason of high status or prestige; "a prestigious professor at a prestigious university"Hippo43 13:48, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assess

[edit]

A long list of alumni, hence the mid importance. You need to give us more encyclopaedic information about your school and cut out the trivia (eg, the chav section). More content and references are needed for B class. Dahliarose 22:57, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Chav Hunting"

[edit]

This seems to lack notability and be of rather fleeting interest. The section already seems dated, and I would suggest its removal. --Breadandcheese (talk) 16:28, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
