Misti as seen from Arequipa
Misti as seen from Arequipa

5x expanded by Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk). Self-nominated at 11:36, 22 November 2023 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Misti; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.[reply]

  • The full review is to follow (a quick check didn't find red flags), but I wonder if the hook could be revised. The hook is only cited to a single source, so for such a strong claim (which I don't doubt, this is more to avoid an ERRORS situation) I'd like to see a few more sources that also verify it. Added a QPQ. Sources that verify the "one of the most dangerous" claim include [1][2][3]. Not supporting the exact claim, but this one shows that Arequipa is one of the three closest cities to an active volcano (and its population has since grown) Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:11, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that should work. Just add them to the article because ideally such a strong claim like "one of the most dangerous in the world" would require multiple citations. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:50, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Added one of these sources for now. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:44, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that should be better. Image is okay, article is okay (GA'd on time), hook is cited inline and interesting. I can't understand Spanish so AGF on the sources. QPQ has been done. No close paraphrasing found (Earwig only detected false positives due to the References coming up as hits for some reason). French source

[edit]

"Boutin, Pierre. "L'éruption du politique au pied d'un volcan inca, le Misti (1460-1470)." Rencontres (2007): 177-194." might have some useful information on the effect of the Misti eruption on Inka Yupanqui, but I can't read French very well. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:12, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

El Comercio-¡Subieron al Misti en Bicicleta!

[edit]

Does this source actually exist anywhere? And even if it does, what makes it a WP:RS? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:00, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it exists. There were two separate articles written in local Arequipa newspapers about my successful climb of El Misti by bicycle. Both newspapers are documented in Wikipedia in Spanish. The first article "¡Subieron al Misti en Bicicleta!" was published in El Comercio https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Comercio_(Per%C3%BA) The second article "Gringos suben el Misti en Bicicleta" was published in El Pueblo https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Pueblo_(Arequipa) tried to upload both articles as proof to the Wiki police but unfortunately, Wiki rules do not permit me from uploading material for which I do not own a copyright. The articles were written because it was the first and perhaps the only time a cyclist had successfully carried a bicycle to the summit of the 19,000 Volcano to ride down. This occurred on July 9 1988. The reason I have taken 35 years to enter the achievement into Wikipedia is because I am currently in the process of completing a book with illustrations about the experience titled Bikes Without Brains, Travel Stories from a Couple of Mail-Order Brides. Please replace the entry. If you provide an email address I would gladly send you the two articles from Arequipa. Terrybpowers (talk) 03:53, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Terrybpowers: Hmm. I guess the issue is that these particular articles aren't digitized. Do you have some more information on publication date, author/byline if it exists? One thing to keep in mind is WP:UNDUE: Not every event involving Misti is on topic for this article/Wikipedia; a lot of mountains have been ascended by bike and stuff. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:30, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All I have is a newspaper clippings from the two Arequipa based newspapers that were published a few days after I made the accent in July 1988. It is very unlikely all of El Comercio’s and El Pueblo’s articles from the 80s have been digitized. I would upload the newspaper clippings but I do not have copyright ownership. As for other accents by bicycle: Yes, today there’s a road that allows people to drive up a in a shuttle to a point on the mountain where they can ride their bikes down or scramble down by foot. My accent with the bicycle in 1988 with a big enough deal that there were articles written about it because it was the first time it was ever done. I’m not sure what other proof you need me to provide you with to substantiate the claim. Terrybpowers (talk) 15:20, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think you can put them on a temporary Google Drive document or somesuch. The problem with WP:UNDUE isn't a question of proof, though; it's a question of whether we want to record every such thing. I guess if it was mentioned in major Peruvian newspapers, then it would be worth including - albeit while observing WP:CITEVAR. I'll do an edit. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:50, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the edits. I’m not clear on where to upload the articles. I will be putting them on my website in 2025. Terrybpowers (talk) 13:38, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can put them on a temporary Google Drive and post the link here, perhaps? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:46, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here you go.

Thx, but it doesn't seem to say "mountain" bike? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:22, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the picture. Terrybpowers (talk) 14:24, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I think that could be a mountain bike, but I wouldn't infer its identity just from the wheels. Probably better to say "bike"; I don't think that specifying "mountain" bike is necessary. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 08:43, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That’s fine. Thank you. Terrybpowers (talk) 14:44, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
