Add Citation/Reference in the Intro

[edit]

It would be helpful to add a link or two that reference where the information for the definition of educational inequality was found to increase clarity and credibility. Jzovnsg (talk) 15:00, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Add more information/references for the last statement of the intro

[edit]

The last sentence of the introduction paragraph states: "Educational inequality also causes a number of problems in the United States, one of which is the increasing population in prisons". It would be helpful to add more information that shows the relationship between the factors of educational inequality that contribute to an increasing population in prison. Possibly referencing another wiki article as well - The School-to-prison pipeline. Jzovnsg (talk) 15:04, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Include Historical Development Section

[edit]

Prior to going into the solutions to educational inequality such as Charter Schools, it may be helpful to include a section that shows the history of educational inequality from the early exclusionary methods of schools to the contemporary exclusionary/unequal components. After that, sections on solutions to contemporary inequality would flow into the article better. Jzovnsg (talk) 15:17, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Article Critique (assignment)

[edit]

I liked that this article is direct and sticks to the point, however use of citations to make facts provided more credible, and would be helpful in bringing the strength of this article to a higher level. However, the context provided does help the reader understand the main factors that contribute to educational inequality. The article also explain how these factors affect access to quality education, and how income inequality is a divisive measure in education. I feel that going into a little bit more depth on how charter and private schools might be beneficial to closing the educational inequality gap might be helpful in maintaining a neutral perspective. As well as bring into light the importance of social justice movements that seek to address a resolution towards educational inequality, rather than only focusing on causality. Which could significantly increase the awareness towards the importance of how this issue is being addressed, what the overall results are, and whether they are effective in reducing or eliminating educational inequality.

Overall seems like a very thorough investigation over that matter, good variety and amount of relatively neutral references provided. I would say the article needs more in-text citations.

[edit]

I would like to propose an addition to this article to talk about the various educational inequalities specifically in African Americans. I will be developing and writing this section in the following months as part of the Black Lives Matter edit-a-thon to increase representation for African Americans. Please check out my user page for more details and references. Vanchu22 (talk) 04:52, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Proposals

[edit]

I am considering adding on to this article. Race and ethnicity are mentioned throughout the article, but I would like to create a subsection similar to the socioeconomic status section. I also want to expand on the achievement gap and discuss high stakes testing and discuss research tying that to the school to prison pipeline. Sources and more details are available on my user page. Revisions and New Information

[edit]

Hello! Alongside other members of my class, I will be providing some revisions and additional information to this article. I plan on focusing on the sections about the discipline gap and prison pipeline, in addition to adding a new section/sub-section about potential reforms to school disciplinary policies. I have a more detailed outline of my planned work, as well as a list of sources, in my sandbox: User:Bgreaves18/sandbox. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns! New Section + Linked Article

[edit]

Hi everybody! I am working on creating another article, White Supremacy in United States School Curriculum, and I am currently thinking of adding a section on white supremacy in curriculum to this article with a link. The topics I would cover in this article's section would be an overview of white supremacy, Eurocentrism and whitewashing in modern school curriculum and the effects of these on students, namely internalized racism and the association of academic success with whiteness. I have a more detailed outline of the information I can pull from on my user page. Does this sound good? --MBJAnderson (talk) 04:37, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding to white supremacy in curriculum

[edit]

I just added a preliminary blurb to the white supremacy in curriculum section; it is very much in its beginning stages right now, and I will be revising with more detail soon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MBJAnderson (talkcontribs) 03:48, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on recent edits

[edit]

Hi MBJAnderson, great contributions on the incredibly important topic of white supremacy in U.S. education. I wanted to point out that the section you added does not address all points of view. Specifically, the view that racism and white supremacy does not inform social structures or the U.S. education system. I would suggest adding a sentence or two to recognize the denial of white supremacy in U.S. curricula in order to fit with Wikipedia’s NPOV policies. The section may also benefit from some mention of recent pushes to build a new antiracist education system in the wake of the recent BLM movement. Thanks again for your contributions! 19jshi (talk) 03:59, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback on edits for Discipline Gap, Prison Pipeline, and School Discipline Reform

[edit]

Great contributions! Well-cited, neutral presentation of comprehensive points. Grammar and readability look great. Could look into providing more images into your sections (a visual graph or infographic would be helpful as you describe trends in your sections) and look into smaller articles related to your keywords that you could include links to bring more readers to your article. Content-wise, everything looks good! Could expand your lead section at the beginning of your page to include a brief introduction to the race-related information that you bring up later. Great job. Review on new edits and organization

[edit]

The new additions to the article look great! This article is organized well and is easily readable. The contributions made added substantial information to the article. I would suggest adding more in line citations as well as editing the intro sentence/lead paragraph to improve this article. I would also look into specifying the subheading “educational inequalities.” Kef1170 (talk) 01:16, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Review on new edits

[edit]

This is a really great article! It's really well organized, and has lots of really interesting and well written content. A few suggestions I have are to proofread for readability, as well as elaborate a bit more on charter schools and add more images. Overall, you did a great job! Article review

[edit]

Hey guys, very well done I can tell this article has had a lot of thought put into the new revisions. All that work though has resulted in great information that might need to be broken up a little bit more with other illustrations, graphs, statistics, lists, or subtitles to make it easier to digest. Additionally, I think there are some small minority groups like Asian-Americans and Native-Americans that don't get much attention, though I know the availability of research probably plays a role in that. And finally, just to get the message out further, I'd recommend some extra links in historical articles dealing with civil rights movements, or other inequality articles. Great job guys! — UnoDosTrey (talk) 17:44, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WP:POV in White supremacy in curriculum

[edit]

Hi, the section on "white supremacy in curriculum" seems to me to violate WP:POV. It's one-sided, presents scholars' claims in wikivoice, conflates a lot of historical facts with the present day situation, equates an "overrepresentation of...European and white American culture" to white supremacy, and is light on sources linking this curriculum to inequalities in education outcomes. I've added a WP:NEUTRAL tag to the section, and hope we can work together to make it better. Stonkaments (talk) 01:54, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Sumanuil: could you please explain why you don't think the controversial claim that "U.S. school curriculum is structured by white supremacy" needs a citation? Also, please note the rules for removing Template:POV:

This template is not meant to be a permanent resident on any article. You may remove this template whenever any one of the following is true:

1. There is consensus on the talkpage or the NPOV Noticeboard that the issue has been resolved.

2. It is not clear what the neutrality issue is, and no satisfactory explanation has been given.

3. In the absence of any discussion, or if the discussion has become dormant.

Can you please self-revert? Stonkaments (talk) 04:42, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it doesn't need one. I think the citations in the rest of the section are adequate to justify that statement. - Sumanuil (talk) 04:49, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I'm still not seeing it. Could you please point me to a specific statement in one of the sources that directly supports that claim? Stonkaments (talk) 06:36, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

From "The Miseducation of the Negro":

"..there would be no lynching if it did not start in the schoolroom.

- Sumanuil (talk) 06:57, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but for such a controversial claim, you would need to show a reliable source naming white supremacy directly and how the U.S. school curriculum is structured around it. Stonkaments (talk) 19:45, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I am finally finishing up a revised version of this section. The one thing I have been having trouble with is finding scholarship that refutes the idea that white supremacy exists in school curriculum, or that curriculum is equitable. I could use some help locating sources, if you are willing Stonkaments? And also - Sumanuil if you're interested...All I have right now is slightly different arguments about the effectiveness of multiculturalism. I do also have an article that discusses that we have come a long way, but still have a long way to go. - MBJAnderson (talk) 14:10, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am finished with my revisions if anyone wants to take a look. I omitted a lot of the historical information to save space, let me know if that should be added back. - MBJAnderson (talk) 01:02, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent work! The section looks much improved. Generalrelative (talk) 03:00, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

School staffing inequality

[edit]

Hello! I am considering making additional contributions related to racial inequalities in school staffing. My additions would be centered around the current lack of diversity in US schools, as well as the subsequent potential effects on minority students. I have more information about this topic and my sources on my user page. Bgreaves18 (talk) 02:59, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Topics to Include

[edit]

Hi! After reading this article, two things that came to mind when thinking about what could improve this article were

  • The effect of mostly White teacher populations on Students of Color (but it is possible that there is not much good research on this).
  • Also, this article seems to really focus on Black students, I think it could benefit from including more marginalized groups. -13Pigs (talk) 22:55, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
