Author, Author
[edit]I made some edits and additions to a page which used to refer to Lodge's 2004 novel called Author, Author. Where has it gone? When a user attempts a wiki search for the page in question, he is directed to a disambiguation page which lists several articles with the title "Author, Author". But the one which used to point to the page about the novel points back to the same disambiguation page. Furthermore, of the many other pages which link to the now-missing page, none can reach the article about the novel. It is somehow lost in hyperspace. Can anyone figure out what has happened to the article about Lodge's 2004 novel? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Greg jinkerson (talk • contribs) 16:05, 2 January 2007 (UTC).
Ph. D.
[edit]Hello.
What are the references of his Ph. D. ? At least the subject, if it was not published?

- I found this and much more on page 15 of David Lodge: How far can you go? by Merritt Moseley. In 1959 he got an MA from University College, London, for his 700-page thesis on the Catholic novel, which he claims was in part responsible for the introduction of a word limit on MA theses at the university. In 1967 Birmingham University gave him a PhD for his book Language of Fiction (appeared 1966). [1] Hans Adler 12:50, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Reference Harkness Fellowship
[edit]Hello.
The given evidence is "Smith, etc....". But David Lodge himself wrote about this period of his life in the "Afterword" for The BM is falling down, Penguin edition, 1980. It's a little funny, to quote an author who probably took the fact from Lodge, and not to quote the original source.
If you need other evidences about Lodge, read the French page which is now much more developped than the English one (but you should also sometimes read David Lodge's books !).
Cordially.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Per consensus, no primary. – robertsky (talk) 20:40, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
– WP:Primary topic. Per pageviews, David Lodge (author) receives more than twice the amount of views than all other David Lodges combined. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 01:50, 6 January 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 07:00, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
- Support – clear WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 22:57, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- Strong Oppose per Wikinav, showing that more people are going to the voice actor, and not the author from the DAB page. Additionally looking at page views over the past year, it shows that the voice actor is far more significant that the author. Instead it looks like the author is currently experiencing a page view boost these last few weeks due to WP:RECENTISM (due to the author's recent death) and does not reflect long term significance. TiggerJay (talk) 03:58, 13 January 2025 (UTC)
- As a follow-up, looking at the pageviews now, it shows that this is clear recentism and lacks the long term significance we expect from PTOPIC. As of today, there isn't even a 3x over the voice actor, and that number has been falling steadily every days nice the author's passing. TiggerJay (talk) 05:08, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- The author's works have defined the campus novel genre and are studied globally. This cultural and academic prominence far exceeds the short-term or niche interest in the voice actor. His coverage and relevance are far narrower, making the case for the author as primary even stronger. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 21:54, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Tiggerjay: PTOPIC isn't just about recent views. The author's decades-long contributions to literature and academia make him the most notable David Lodge overall. This isn't a short-lived interest. WikiNav data excludes low-frequency interactions and external sources, making it unreliable for a holistic view. If users often navigate from other David Lodge pages to the author, that shows he's the topic they're actually looking for. Recent interest amplifies this, but it doesn't create it. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 21:30, 15 January 2025 (UTC)
- You are absolutely correct that PTOPIC is far more expansive than just pageviews, and I'm not suggesting that the other David (voice actor) is primary, but rather simply another well known David people are looking for. I introduced my pageview links because yours were biased due to the recentism of the authors death to demonstrate that there really isn't 2x pageviews in the authors favor, but rather on the scale of long term, it shows quote the opposite. However, if you want to look into other things (again we need to discount their death), so when we look at routine google search or google news results we see mixed results for both David's -- that, along with WikiNav, are ways we can determine first major aspect of PTOPIC,
if it is highly likely—much more likely than any other single topic
-- for this reason we would expect the vast majority of these to be about the author, however, they are not. In reality, in my incognitio google search the voice actor shows up first under "See results about" -- although I would admit that it might be due in part to regionalism and if you're searching from Europe, the other might show up first, but beyond that possibility, it is unquestionable that search results are also supporting the significance of both, and the likelyghood that a person might be looking for either person. The second major aspect requireslong-term significance
. Now there is do doubt that they're both significant, but again, herein the page views, which you first introduced shows significantly waning of interest in the first week after the passing of the author. All that to say, there is no indication that the author is who they are most likely searching for beyond the next week or so, and we don't use passing popularity for PTOPIC purposes. TiggerJay (talk) 04:28, 16 January 2025 (UTC)- Recentism doesn't apply here. The author consistently attracted substantial interest even before his death. More importantly, the author's decades of literary contributions clearly demonstrate
long-term significance
. His works, such as Changing Places and Nice Work, have shaped the campus novel genre and remain academically influential. - This is also a C-class article, significantly more substantial than the voice actor's stub-class article. According to WP:GRADE, a stub-class article is
very basic
, offering little meaningful content. - The voice actor is not even linked as a main Google search result, appearing only in the "People also ask" section ("What characters does David Lodge voice?"). This would indicate niche, role-specific interest rather than personal notability.
- So, the author remains the most likely search target based on his prominence in authoritative sources and broader recognition. The limited mentions of the voice actor in niche entertainment contexts do not challenge this.
- All this aligns with PTOPIC guidelines, making David Lodge (author) the clear candidate for the unqualified title. ‑‑Neveselbert (talk · contribs · email) 22:40, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
- The only aspect to recentism I'm referring to is your use of pageviews wherein you only select this month, which showed as huge, unnatural, non-persisting spike which resulted in your claim
David Lodge (author) receives more than twice the amount of views than all other David Lodges combined
. However when you zoom out to even include the last 30 days, the spike caused by the author's death is unquestionable.[2]. And when you predate the death, there is no support for your claim made above. Unless you'd like to offer up a different reason for the sudden 160x spike in traffic, and then quickly diminishing down in pageviews. TiggerJay (talk) 23:00, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
