Why I placed Chosen where I did.

[edit]

(This explanation isn't going to talk to you like you're a toddler. It's going to assume that if you want to, you can figure out what congressional townships are. If you don't want to, no harm, no foul. You're still smart enough to understand most of what's going on here.)

Firstly, my coordinates contradict this location, archived here. That location is here:
26°42′19″N 80°42′44″W / 26.705396844935578°N 80.71225968216105°W / 26.705396844935578; -80.71225968216105

Post offices are used to find abandoned towns because even if the towns had town halls there is no national registry for that. There is, however, for post offices. Each post office's entry had to give a detailed location description so mail carriers wouldn't waste time looking for it.

Chosen applied for a post office on December 17, 1920. They give their location as the northwest quarter of Section 31, Township 43 South, Range 37 East of the Tallahassee meridian.

Belle Glade applied for a post office on November 3, 1919. They describe their location as the southwest quarter of Section 32, Township 43 south, Range 37 east of the Tallahassee meridian.

Belle Glade even gives detailed maps showing where both post offices were located.

Going to the Land Boundary Information System's website, you can scroll down, enter the Township, Range and Section information, scroll back up again and zoom in to the Google Map view of that secton. Up in the northwest corner is Belle Glade's current post office. That's where Chosen's post office was located. Belle Glade's post office used to be located somewhere on West A Avenue between Main and 2nd Streets.

Yes, this is original research. Yes, Wikipedia discourages that. But in this case, the secondary source I could find based her conclusion on this map. If you read her article, the first link above, her integrity, intelligence drive, and love of her subject are obvious. She's not lazy or sloppy. But she was hunting on ground scoured twice by a hurricane then an 18-foot wall of water. Nothing would be where it once was. And she didn't have good tools. I envy her; she got to go there and it looks beautiful... Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 21:18, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not "discourage" original research: it outright disallows it. No original research is a core content policy. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 00:09, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
