Games to be added

[edit]

A game which could be listed on this page if anyone here knows it is a space based artillery game. I forget the name unfortunately, but if someone has played it they know the one i mean, your ships sit on planetoids and launch all sorts of ordinance at eachother, which is affected by the gravity feilds of the surrounding planetoids. Free game with online play, one of the best artillery games i ever played, i came here in the hopes of finding a refference to it as i have forgotten the name, or where to find it.

Yea, I know the one you mean. I actually came here looking for that exact game. I'm sure it's called something like Terra <something>, but I'm probably wrong. Anyway, I'm going to continue my hunt and when I find it, I'll add it here. :)

I think Angry Bird should also be added... No? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.172.0.204 (talk) 21:11, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another game which could be mentioned is Death Tanks. That was a real-time multiplayer artillery game on the Sega Saturn. However, it was only released as an "unlockable" inside other games. The first one in Powerslave, and Death Tanks Zwei in Duke Nukem 3D. It is said to be very fun (supporting up to 7 players simultaneously I think), but I have never gotten to play it. Also don't forget the secret unlockable Destruct in the game Tyrian_(video_game), although if we listed every single unlockable secret version of artillery/scorched earth style games, this article would be miles long, I think.Zedleplin (talk) 04:27, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Finally located the game which the first guy was referring to. It's called WarHeads SE (http://www.warheads.net/), a very awesome space based artillery shooter. However, I'm unsure of the proper wiki procedure to add it, so I'll just leave it here for the time being.

I'm amazed that nobody has thought to include Angry Birds! While comical, and with a wider variety of weapons than available in most artillery games, it is, at its core, an excellent artillery game in its own right. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.83.211.93 (talk) 18:07, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly disagree with adding Angry Birds, and it makes me angry its listed. Angry birds is a physics games. You have a pile of dominoes, how to knock it down right... artillery game indicates either strategy or tactics being involved with firing to win and not getting killed afterwards. If the pigs fired back, or there were two players trying to knock down each other's bird's forts... I wouldn't mind. 173.170.150.173 (talk) 22:11, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I also always thought Angry Birds was just another (rather overhyped) variation on the artillery games. I disagree with the previous poster's disagreements, since the core game elements are undeniably the same: 2D limited world, angle/power input, passive missiles which follow gravity-driven trajectories, goal is to use a missile and/or landscape destruction to kill the other player. Angry Birds is closer to the original Artillery than Scorched 3D is! (And I don't think you can deny that Scorched 3D is a descendent of Artillery...) I am surprised no one mentioned Blast Doors, which was sort of a DOS predecessor of Scorched 3D. 2601:140:C000:25C6:8D4E:A9:497A:EC0A (talk) 22:40, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My mistake, Blast Doors was not DOS, but one of the earlier Direct X games. Windows 95 and DX3 for the first incarnation. 2601:140:C000:25C6:8D4E:A9:497A:EC0A (talk) 22:42, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tank Wars (1990)(bomb32.exe) by Kenneth Morse is missing. https://www.dosgames.com/game/tank-wars/ 23.28.101.163 (talk) 19:19, 14 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Scorched earth.png

[edit]

Image:Scorched earth.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Removal of "shooter" references

[edit]

I found somewhere between 10 and 20 references that called individual artillery games a "strategy game" (e.g.: X = strategy game, Y = strategy game, Z = strategy game). However, there are few/no references that explicitly refer to all artillery games at once and say "artillery games are a form of strategy game". As such, someone removed my references because they felt I was violating WP:SYN. Similarly, there were 3 or 4 references that referred to specific artillery games, calling each one a shooter (specifically "trajectory shooter" or "ballistics shooter"). I removed these specific references, in an effort to be consistent about the WP:SYN policy. I personally would prefer we include all the references, because I think it's better to violate WP:SYN than it is to violate WP:VERIFY. I think it's better to have references that refer to individual artillery games than no references about artillery games at all. But if we have to be strict about WP:SYN, then I would ask that we treat all references consistently. Randomran (talk) 00:19, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image Image:Worms1 screenshot.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Unverifiable information for certain games

[edit]

I've been doing some research online and am unable to find any concurrent evidence that MicroForum had anything to do with publishing Tank Wars. Wasn't this title released purely as a shareware game by Kenny Morse? Zedleplin (talk) 04:25, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

references

[edit]

This is a tough article to verify, because it's such a niche genre in terms of audience, and was largely founded by independent game developers. But I've tried to track down some references for further use.

Haven't had a chance to go through all of them, but I'll find time to pull out some verifiable information at some point in the future. Randomran (talk) 20:55, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Strategy -> Tactics

[edit]

Artillery game is not a strategy game, but a tactical game. Strategy would involve large-scale decisions and planning long-term goals, while tactics are more focused on limited small-scale actions and effective utilization of limited resources (in case of artillery game, these would be the weapons and the tanks). Win the war, it's strategy. Win the battle, it's tactics. Kotiwalo (talk) 09:15, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[Posted after many, many months.] I still maintain that it's a glorified, turn-based shooter. No strategy or tactics involved. SharkD  Talk  03:43, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Browser-based (BB)

[edit]

BB artillery games follow the "worms" fashion, in that you control creatures, not tanks (and hence, don't need "fuel"). Arcanists and "Wild Ones" (for MySpace) are there. (notability of Wild Ones is questionable) Yura87 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:51, 28 December 2010 (UTC).[reply]
