Ukrainian of Ukrainian origin
[edit]Apparently, someone wanted to make a point so much that the lede says now "Ukrainian composer of Ukrainian origin".--Ymblanter (talk) 07:36, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Name
[edit]Why should he be called 'Artemy' in English, if in Ukrainian his name is 'Артем'? Sources in Ukrainian [1][2][, and in English [3] (that's from Ukraininan Uni) [4][5][6][7] that use 'Artem' instead.
But if the majority of sources says 'Artemy', so let it be. Artem.G (talk) 14:24, 9 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Artem.G: thanks for this, you could well be right, but I'll try and find out if Artemy is correct or not before amending it. Amitchell125 (talk) 08:01, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- As The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians uses 'Artemy', there's no need to change his name in the article. Amitchell125 (talk) 09:51, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- So be it! Thanks for clarification, I was just a little bit confused. Transliteration of Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian names is a nightmare, so I'm used to it :) Artem.G (talk) 10:17, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
Spellings
[edit]Please see here for why I am reverting the spelling of Kyiv back from 'Kiev'. Amitchell125 (talk) 08:34, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
Source question
[edit]Amitchell125, I realized after the GA review that I had not done any spotchecks, so I just ran an Earwig check. Earwig is complaining about a couple of phrases that are similar to what you have in the article. From this source:
- Source: "The absence of original manuscripts and primary sources about his life led to the marginalization of his legacy and a lack of awareness of his work’s significance in the development of music in the second half of the 18th century". Article "The lack of manuscripts and primary sources about Vedel led to a lack of awareness of his significance in the development of music in the late 18th century".
- Source: "To a large extent, his works became the foundation on which the Ukrainian liturgical and secular musical culture of the 19th century continued to develop, albeit with great delays. His free command of contemporary techniques of choral writing, combined with innovations in adapting the particularities of Ukrainian melody, make Artem Vedel’s works a unique phenomenon in the context of world musical culture." Article: "Vedel's works were part of the foundation on which the Ukrainian liturgical and secular musical culture of the 19th century continued to develop, and his ability to compose choral works, combined with innovations in adapting the particularities of Ukrainian melody, make his works a unique phenomenon in the context of world musical culture."
- Source: "Only a few months later, having lost faith in his surroundings and not finding peace of mind, he left the monastery and returned to his family’s home, where, according to the memoirs of his father, he read a great deal, played the violin, and composed new works. " Article: "A few months later, not having found peace of mind, Vedel left the monastery and returned home, where, according to the memoirs of his father, he read, played the violin, and composed new works."
I think these sentences in the article need to be changed; they're substantially similar to the source. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 16:27, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Mike Christie Thanks, I'll take a look and get my head around sorting out the issues over the next few days. Amitchell125 (talk) 16:39, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
- Now sorted. The second issue was supposed to have been a direct quote (this wasn't very clearly done by me), and I have now quoted the author properly. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 18:01, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I will get around to doing some source spotchecks sooner or later as well. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 18:03, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
