Stylization
[edit]Regarding A3!#Anime, an anonymous user insists on keeping the Japanese stylization for the episode title in the "The Show Must Go On!" even though it is in English. The only difference between both titles is that in the Japanese title, there is a space between the final word and the exclamation mark. Personally, I don't believe it should be listed because the title is in English and that one space doesn't seem to warrant including in the Japanese field. However, I would like to get a third opinion on this. lullabying (talk) 03:08, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Lullabying: I agree with you that it's not significant enough to mention. Honestly, I suspect that's a mistake on the anime's website: if you look at episode 12 it uses the fullwidth exclamation mark, which is more typical in Japanese and looks similar to " !". — Goszei (talk) 10:19, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- It's still a difference, no matter how significant the difference is, so what's the harm in just mentioning it in a footnote or any other way? If it's a mistake from the anime's website then that mistake has been made in at least thirteen official japanese television listing and streaming/rental platforms: AbemaTV, Amazon Prime Video, Bandai Channel, DMM, Docomo Anime Store, Gyao Store, Hulu, Nico Nico Channel, Rakuten TV, TBS channel, Tokyo MX, U-Next, Video Market Corporation. 2A04:CEC0:11FC:69EE:8F3E:7ED6:EF13:894C (talk) 21:51, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- A full width character versus a regular character, "!" vs "!", is not significant enough to qualify as a "stylization". It's the same character, just encoded differently.--十八 22:16, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- It has nothing to do with the exclamtion mark which is the same used in both titles, the difference here is the space right before the exclamation mark. 2A04:CEC0:1055:49D1:C9C2:3062:28D:14C8 (talk) 23:04, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- That space is a result of the full width exclamation mark, "!" (full width) vs "!" (regular). When used with other text, full width looks like: this! vs. this!. Or if all characters are full width, it looks like this!, with visible spaces between all characters, but that's because the spaces are essentially built into the full width variants. As I said, it's just encoded differently. Funnily enough, the novel version doesn't use a full width exclamation mark.--十八 01:00, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm aware of the difference between these two exclamation marks but this space is not a result of the full width one, it's just a simple space followed by a regular exclamation mark as can be seen on the anime official website and all the other legal websites posted above, the original title appears as: "The Show Must Go On !" while the english localized title appears as: "The Show Must Go On!" as can be seen on the funimation official website. Also I'd like to know the reason for this edit, why did the hyphen was replaced by a dash? 2A04:CEC0:109D:8A42:88E8:F000:52E3:B4AA (talk) 01:50, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

In my opinion, neither of these constitutes a stylization, though, and should not even be mentioned as a footnote; it causes more confusion to mention this (as has been demonstrated in this circuitous discussion) than it would ever resolve. — Goszei (talk) 01:59, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- Regarding the hyphen to dash for "On Love—Spring Edition", I replaced it with a dash for grammar, otherwise it conveys a completely different meaning (making the adjective describing "edition" as "love-spring", which was obviously not intended). The dash at least keeps the visual aspect of the hyphen. I originally listed the title as "On Love - Spring Edition", but you removed the spaces. lullabying (talk) 02:12, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- If this is not considered a stylization, then what is it? Where can we find what constitutes one? This typography does not follow the english manual of style, hence why it's considered as a stylization and should be mentioned. If it's not a stylization, then it is not english anymore and then should be placed in the native title as I originally did here. As for episode 5 english title, what makes you think that this was not intended? Since when are we correcting the localized english titles chosen by the licensed company by assuming mistakes? A lot of titles are changed to the point where they do not follow the original meaning anymore. 2A04:CEC0:109C:3FF9:96A3:4D74:B592:F47F (talk) 02:48, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- The original Japanese title "Koi ni Tsuite: Haru" does not mean "On Love-Spring Edition"; it means "On Love - Spring Edition." Funimation spells it as "On Love - Spring Edition" in the actual episode. lullabying (talk) 02:56, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- That's what I meant, don't expect the official licensed companies to literally translate their shows, because they actually localize them in order to adapt to their english audience, that's not a reason to change their listings which are gramatically correct in the first place by claiming that there's a mistake. 2A04:CEC0:10D9:27E2:4C85:B0CF:F90D:5751 (talk) 03:46, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, you're the one who removed the space between the hyphens after I agreed to re-add the hyphenated title, so I don't understand where you're going with this conversation. I changed it to a dash to compromise for grammatical revisions and to keep the visual aspect of the hyphen. Funimation lists the title as "On Love - Spring Edition" in the actual episode, so it's safer to assume that the version without spaces could be an error or limitations on their web interface. lullabying (talk) 03:53, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
- I removed the spaces because MOS:TVEPISODE stipulates that secondary sources are preferred over sources taken from the episode itself, but if you're gonna assume mistakes, then it's better to actually keep them. 2A04:CEC0:108E:D702:2948:FE52:C232:5AF4 (talk) 04:59, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Even if a full width character wasn't used, it's still irrelevant. The production company probably put in the space either by mistake, or on purpose to mimic the space in the full width exclamation mark because that's what Japanese viewers would recognize. Episode 12 not using the space/full width copycat seems to make the former more likely. The fact that the novel version that I linked above does not include the space is pretty clear that it's a superfluous quirk of the anime's version, but otherwise not worth caring about because the difference is so minuscule.--十八 03:49, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
