  • "The Mennonite Central Committee, an American relief agency stationed in Akron, Pennsylvania, provided several lentils and cooking oils. It grants Iran supplies annually, no matter if a disaster occurred or not; 400 metric tons of lentils intended for refugees were instead given to survivors." This doesn't seem to make much sense; "several lentils"? You don't "grant supplies". Refugees of what?
Ok, resolved those I think. ceranthor 14:09, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The quake was felt as far away as the Kerman region of Iran." How far away as is that?

Comment - This sentence is unintelligible , "With over 12 earthquakes exceeding the Richter scale magnitude of seven–or major in size–, Iran has faced many casualties from natural disasters–but mostly, earthquakes. Graham Colm Talk 21:17, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think I fixed it. Feel free to edit the article as I'm not sure I corrected that to your liking. ceranthor 01:34, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comments, questions etc below. EyeSerenetalk 10:19, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

General

[edit]
  • Should the article use British or American English?
  • Abbreviation of earthquake: I've noticed the article slips into these, so (1) should we abbreviate? (2) If so, should it be quake or the more technically correct 'quake?
  • Changed a few numbers (in the infobox and elsewhere) that didn't match the sources given

Lead

[edit]
  • The introductory sentence comes over as rather awkward, being written as it obviously has to comply with WP:BOLDTITLE (in particular, the repetition of "1997" and "earthquake", and saying that the Khorasan Province was struck, then calling it the Qayen earthquake). I think this might be a candidate for more natural language, though because it's an (albeit permitted) MOS-exception change, I'm proposing it here rather than going right ahead.
Gone ahead and done this (plus expanded the lead slightly); please feel free to alter etc as necessary :) EyeSerenetalk 11:39, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Background and geology

[edit]
  • As I understand the Mercalli scale, it's relative to location. I assume the 'X' rating was for the epicentre?
  • "The inhabitants were largely subsistence farmers..." or "are largely subsistence farmers..."?

Damage and casualties

[edit]
  • Casualty estimates/damage - it seems slightly incongruous to be talking about estimates then giving such precise figures. Might it be worth giving ballpark figures in the text, but detailing the numbers given by various sources (which rarely all agree with each other) in a footnote, similar to the way we often write up battle casualties?
I've also gone ahead and addressed this :) EyeSerenetalk 20:44, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • There was a fair amount of repetition in this section, so I've tried to rationalise it. This involved significant rearrangement including shifting around of refs, so apologies if I've mucked anything up.

Relief efforts

[edit]
  • Nothing major here, although again I've tried to reduce repetition and reorganise the section so it doesn't give the appearance of parroting the sources too closely ;)

Future threats

[edit]
  • "With over 12 earthquakes..." Can we be more precise here?

Not done. You haven't explained what coordinate correction you think is needed, and the coordinates currently in the article correspond to those that appear in the infobox image. Deor (talk) 08:19, 11 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced table

[edit]

The table of donated amounts in the Relief efforts section is unsourced. 4nn1l2 (talk) 02:24, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found a source myself and it seems that the figures in the table need to be revised! 4nn1l2 (talk) 20:54, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
