Placement of "Did you know..."
What do you all think of moving the "Did you know..." box down to the width = 100% section so that there's less dead space down there? Rfrisbietalk 06:05, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

FYI, I have now moved all of the subpages of this portal to correspond with its new location. Canderson7 (talk) 19:01, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
- I object to the move. Only the 'subportals' section and the featured articles (as discussed above, two are more relevant to architecture than art) suggest that this is an 'Arts' portal. Every other section, however, concerns visual art, and this portal is part of the Visual arts Wikiproject (such as it is). I think the name should be reverted to Portal:Art unless someone is willing to add content that would give this portal a broader coverage of 'the Arts', in which case I will create a new Portal:Visual art, based on what is currently here.
- Apologies for the late response; the vote seems to have passed me by until the move was made. However, I have been a fairly regular contributor to this portal and would like my comments to be addressed. Ham 21:24, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
- I don't really mind one way or the other regarding the name, and you're certainly entitled to an opinion. Considering though that each name change requires an additional fifty edits (to get all the subpages in place, eliminate double redirects, etc.), I suggest that a final name be settled upon before any further action is taken. Canderson7 (talk) 23:13, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
- I would rather this were reverted to Portal:Art, unless anyone can make a sufficiently strong case for a portal for The Arts, i.e. covering art, music, architecture, literature, theatre, cinema, poetry, opera etc. As the Wikipedia community doesn't seem to be awfully strong on the arts I don't think there would be enough impetus for one – but I'd be delighted to be proved wrong! Ham 15:29, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- There is a need for a Portal:Arts if only for linking from the Main Page, where the portals are prominently placed. Portal:Art (i.e. one only covering Visual or Fine Art) is too narrow to get a link, the Arts collectively are appropriate (including Literature, Music, etc.). dml 16:16, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- A fair enough point. Art (visual art) is too narrow a field to rank alongside Science, Technology, Society etc. (at least, in terms of the quality of its coverage on Wikipedia), but it deserves a portal alongside literature, music and the rest. If I were to create Portal:Visual arts (that particular nomenclature because of Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts), I would like the visual art-specific elements of Portal:Arts to be moved to the new portal. This would include:
- Quotes
- Did You Know
- Wikiprojects
- Things you can do
- Most of the categories – i.e. under the first line rule
- As for replacements to these relevant to the arts, I can't do that alone; a lot of the aspects of this broad topic lie outside my radar (I could manage updates to the visual arts portal though, no problem). I don't mean to come across as anal, it's just that Portal:Arts needs to have a better idea of what it's supposed to be; at the moment it doesn't seem to know whether it's an art or an arts portal. HAM 13:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- It should be the composite portal covering all of The Arts, from the visual to the physical. At present, this portals' selected article and selected picture are set to update until May. --cj | talk 23:21, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- Support cj. For example, the Arts subsume music and any other competent action. But 'visual arts' are unnecessarily restrictive. Now what about 'participation in the arts'? What about both active participation, passive participation? --Ancheta Wis 09:02, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Erroneous Material
I removed some material from the bottom of the Arts portal a couple weeks ago. Someone had put up a link about Green Day (something like "Green Day is teh best!!"). I took it upon myself to DELETE it. Hopefully, it won't happen again. Rdbrd82 22:36, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
I just removed another phrase from the bottom of the intro of the Art protal. the words "I like cheese." were there under the more info link. Perhaps someone should keep an eye out for this kind of stuff? Raine 18:22, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Comics
While I agree that comics should be considered art, I think they should removed from the main portal and placed under Literature. Does anyone else agree? Bitoffish 16:14, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- While I don't have any objection to comics being considered art either, on the (very poor) resolution I'm currently using there isn't room for more than six icons in the subportals section, so Comics would seem the obvious one to go. HAM 08:40, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Strong object on placing "comics" under "literature", strong support on playing "comics" under "visual art". All comics are visual art. Many comics are not literature. This is because it is required in the definition of comics that they always incorporate images, but it is not required that they incorporate text; adding text to an image does not make it "literature", unless The Betrayal of Images is "literature". This is why one of the synonyms for comics is "sequential art"; no synonym for comics is "art and words combined" (else children's books would also be "comics"). Why waste space with a redundancy by including both "Comics" and "Visual arts", when we still don't have many other art media listed? -Silence 18:40, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
I have just found these comments. Unfortunately discussion has been fragmented between two or three pages. Can I refer everybody to the Comics heading on Portal talk:Arts/Categories? Comics was included under both Literature and Visual arts on the request of Hiding. Previously it had been under Visual arts.
Would it be better if we had all these discussions on the Arts Project Talk page? - Kleinzach 09:10, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Featured articles
I just posed the same question to Portal talk:History, but it applies here too. I noticed that this portal puts the featured articles into subpages such as, Portal:Arts/Featured article/April, 2006. In March, I added to my watchlist all the portal pages that are linked on the Main Page and their subpages (linked with the small "edit" buttons), to monitor for vandalism. I just now noticed the monthly featured article subpage was different than the one I put on my watchlist in March. Because of that, vandalism to Portal:History/Featured article/April, 2006 went unnoticed for 24 hours. I probably missed some here too. I'd rather not have to come back each month to add new subpages, so would anyone object if the featured article stay in Portal:Arts/Featured article and not further subpages? Once they are archived, then I'm fine with moving them into the dated subpages. -Aude (talk | contribs) 19:47, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- My response would be the same as at Portal talk:History.--cj | talk 07:18, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Vote for featured content
With the end of the month approaching fast, I've started voting processes for Featured article of the month and Featured picture of the month on Portal:Arts. Please vote or make your own nominations on the relevant pages. If there are no votes I will promote Igor Stravinsky and Image:Pantheon wider centered.jpg by default – both are proper Wikipedia featured content. One point we need to raise is whether we only allow proper featured articles and pictures (as with Portal:Geography), or whether we relax the requirements for showcasing (as with most other portals, which have Selected articles etc.). Featured articles are not a problem, but arts-related featured pictures are rather thin on the ground, and when you don't count the art or architecture ones they're non-existent. Poetry subportal?
Is a "Poetry" subportal really necessary with the inclusion of a "Literature" subportal? As I understand it, poetry and prose are devolved entities of Literature, so putting a "Poetry" subportal next to a "Literature" one seems to be anti-hierarchical. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.208.81.220 (talk • contribs)

Experts needed
A category for articles that need expert assistance from those with knowledge of Arts has been created and articles are being sorted into the category (Category:Pages needing expert attention from the Arts Portal). I would like to propose adding a reference to this on the portal page, perhaps in the Projects section so that those with expertise in the Arts would be made aware of it and would have a link to it.

Remove selected quotes to Portal:Visual arts?
The current selected quote, which has remained unchanged for months, is by an artist who doesn't even have a Wikipedia article. I think this section has had its day on P:A and am proposing to move it to the Visual arts portal. As P:VA rotates content at random, the rankly more interesting quotes currently languishing in the archive would get the regular airing they deserve. The entire section is a leftover from the days when this was an portal for art rather than the arts; let's move it to its proper home. [talk to the] HAM 20:15, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Transcreation/transcreator
I would like to start a new subject concerning this fairly new occupation. While it has probably been done by a lot of people all over the world for some time, it has not yet had an official name. Transcreation involves both translation and adaptation according to cultural specifications. Typically, it is a creative adaptation of advertising material or brands to the requirements of various countries and cultures, and may involve finding a new brand name for an item if the original name means something culturally unacceptable in the target language. Transcreators are emerging as a group of skilled and creative translators who are innovative and have thorough knowledge of languages and cultures, many are originally translators. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.204.21.74 (talk) 10:40, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

The mistake was the page Portal:Arts/Featured article/December, 2007 The only text there was {| This interacted with the syntax of the portal page and created a complete mess, which could not be recognized from the project page. SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT: PINK FLOYD ARTICLE
I corrected the English grammer on the Pink Floyd article to find it incorrect again. I'll state why I made those changes; and why I'll make them again: THE band is singluar, even though there are many people in a (a=singular) band. Those (plural) people in the (singular) band. When there is a battle of the bands, those bands which battle are plural; but the band who wins is singular. When speaking in the possesive of bands: All of the bands may store their belongings over there, however that band may store its belongings over there instead. Every instance of subject verb agreement in that article is incorrect. I will once again fix it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Twidget1 (talk • contribs) 22:53, 26 October 2008 (UTC) I left the last paragraph in the pluaral as the author seemed to be talking about the remainig members of the band which would be plural. (Those (plural) people are members of a singular band!) With that said, I saved the changes, and when I checked back a few minutes later, it was wrong again. When I tried yet a third edit, it showed my changes in the edit, and saved it. When I back out, it goes back to the way it started it. I've no idea why this article is doing that.
- There is a difference between American and British usage here, and since Pink Floyd is a UK band, folks will insist on Brit usage. They speak about the band in the plural. Sunray (talk) 23:20, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- If you click on the "history" tab of any page, you can see all changes that have been made. In this particular article, there is a comment coded directly at the first place where you have been making your change, explaining the situation. It looks like this:
<!--Note: This article is written in British English, which treats collective nouns like bands as plurals (that is: Pink Floyd ARE a band). Don't change this.--> '''Pink Floyd''' <!-- see note above -->are<!-- see note above --> an English...

Melanges (and Compilations?)
As far as I know compilations and melanges emerged in the 20th century as an artwork type, in many mediums. From melanges of images in one solid painting to complex arrangements and installations of different pieces which make up the whole in physical space, sometimes in radically different mediums the scope of the terms is wide but nonetheless distinctive. Unless these are known by other names an article on this is much needed. Some disambiguation links would be good too.

Hindustani Classical Music - Origin
Hindustani classical music is considered to be one of the oldest art forms and especially in the field of music. the hindustani classical music vocal or instrunmental , even karnataki Music for that matter is nothing but a permutaion and combination of seven swaras i.e. SA-RE-GA-MA-PA-DHA-NI-SA. the Hindustani classical Music which is popularly known as Indian Classical Music in the west is based on these seven swaras and its rendition is done in the forms of various ragas which is again nothing but the permutation and combination of these seven swaras, woven and entwined within certain boundries.
having said all that i would like to know few things
- how old is the art form of music - how did this concept of seven swaras originate - have these seven swaras always been there , or it has beeen an eveolutioan? - how this art has eveolved and developed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sureshkarve (talk • contribs) 03:54, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

The current content is simply shameful , it has been there for more than a month, I think that it could have been filled with something more relevant to the Arts in general.Brain (talk) 23:51, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Portal:Arts → Portal:The arts – This discussion regarding naming of the article has shown that the meanings of arts and the arts are not the same. This portal should move to align with the corresponding article. Interstellarity (talk) 18:38, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- Support per previous discussion, although portals and projects sometimes have shorter titles that doesn't seem to need to be the case here. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:56, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
@Buidhe: Personally, I don't have a strong opinion yet on one title over the other. But given that this was a featured portal and is permanently linked from the main page, I think it might be good to advertise this discussion a little more widely before enacting it. Courtesy pinging Stephen who updated the main page link. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 01:14, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
- Changing the name of a high-profile portal like this based on a discussion with 1 (one) singular participant is very odd indeed. If nothing else, it sets a very bad precedent. 78.28.55.139 (talk) 16:06, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
- Yes but there was consensus both for the main article and the category and this doesn't really make much difference to readers it doesn't seem an issue and per below there is now discussion on how it should be linked that should resolve any concerns. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:26, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
Nil edit?
Most boxes have an edit button, but the featured article box instead has a "nil edit" button that's unclickable. What's up with that? It's confusing and unexplained. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 07:54, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Not redefining, just repelling
Redefined doesn't need a hyphen. I'd fix it myself, but when I try to edit this piece, I'm thrust into a confusing world of "templates" and warned that any changes I make will be "highly conspicuous" (or was it "widely noticed"?) Cheers – AndyFielding (talk) 11:30, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
