Mac Safari

I fixed my sig! Great! But it was a trial because my normal browser, Safari on the Mac, refused to let me alter the checkbox for 'Raw signature'. Internet Explorer on the Mac allowed it. Is there some reason for this? David | Talk 20:45, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

David, using Safari to hit the checkbox works fine for me. Was something changed on wikipedia's end? I'm using the latest version of Safari on 10.4.3. Paul (talk+) 18:10, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Is there a technical/other reason that we don't have a default link to the talk page in the base signature? It seems like it's adding an extra click when, in my case at least, I usually am more inclined to hit a person's talk page than their user page, at least at first. But I've only been here a couple of months, so I may be missing something basic... -- nae'blis (talk) 18:16, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

I dont get it

I'm sorry...I don't get it. Can someone tell me why my sig doesnt work?

— goethean ॐ

(in the "signature blank", I've got: ampersand numbersign 2384 semicolon for the Om symbol)

goethean 18:04, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Would that be or &amp#2384;? Try the latter... PaulC/T+ 18:51, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
errr... nevermind... it seems after further review I don't really know what I'm talking about... heh sorry. PaulC/T+ 18:57, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
Could you try the workarounds I just added to the page (since you are already using a numeric entity, could you try using raw unicode)? --cesarb 16:43, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

What happened?

OK, can someone explain why my sig sometimes comes out correct and sometimes comes out as just a simple link to my user page? Here is what I have on my preferences page,

older≠wiser

This is marked as "Invalid raw signature; check HTML tags." but I don't see what the problem is. Bkonrad 16:04, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

If it's happening sometimes only, it could be related to the developers recently playing with the version of PHP. Looks like only some of the servers were upgraded. As a workaround, could you please try using the corresponding numeric entity instead of ≠? If it works all the time, it should be added to the page. --cesarb 16:16, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. It looks like a problem with how the HTML entity for ≠ is getting processed (even here, when I'm putting it inside nowiki tags, it is still getting rendered. It seems to work OK when I replace it with unicode. olderwiser 16:22, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
OK, I've added it to the list on the page. Now we need to get more people with similar problems to test and verify the workaround. --cesarb 16:41, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

According to Brion, this was fixed last night (when I finally figured out that my problem was not the span tags but my mdash). It works for me now. — Ilyanep (Talk) 06:05, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Removed the workaround from the page, as it's not needed anymore. --cesarb 18:13, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm a noob

Good idea to create this page. Thanks. I still have to find out though if it works with my signature (meaning if I'm able to make head or tail of what it says here).

Lots of people will have to modify their signatures. Many of them will know a lot about computing, many (myself included) won't. Since they are all Wikipedia contributors, they are all likely to be curious people.

So let me ask a question: What does "raw" mean as in "raw signature"? What is the opposite of "raw"?

Looking forward to keeping on learning, <KF> 17:35, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

The whole point of this page is to help the ones who do not know much about computing. If it's too technical, feel free to edit to make it more clear — even if it needs to get to the level of "click here" complete with screenshots .
"raw signatures" is the name of the preference option. "raw" here means the code is not interpreted, escaped or formatted by the software (you have to do all the escaping and formatting yourself).
I hope I made myself clear.
--cesarb 17:59, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
Raw means that MediaWiki won't wrap the whole thing in a link to your user page. Rob Church (talk) 00:29, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
It says that mine is invalid NO matter what I put. Even just <font color="darkblue">VoA</font>.Voice of All(MTG) 22:55, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

hmm...What did I do??

I coded my new signature, and I tried fixing it according to this article, but it is still not working...I probably missed something, but I can't find it..hmmm...Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated. Ø tVaughn05 talkcontribs<<That is what I want it to look like =)
<i><font face="arial, helvetica" color="#007700"><b>Ø</b></font></i> <font face="Tahoma, helvetica" color="#007700"><b><i>tVaughn05</i></b></font> <font face="Tahoma, helvetica" color="#007700"><b><i>talk</i></b></font><font face="Tahoma, helvetica" color="#007700"><b><i>contribs</b><i></font>

You have overlapping tags. Use:

<i><font face="arial, helvetica" color="#007700"><b>Ø</b></font></i> <font face="Tahoma, helvetica" color="#007700"><b><i>tVaughn05</i></b></font> <font face="Tahoma, helvetica" color="#007700"><b><i>talk</i></b></font><font face="Tahoma, helvetica" color="#007700"><b><i>contribs</i></b></font>

I think that works. Thank you! I am going to try the span style thingy that mark_sweep suggested later tonight. I am still new to this code =). Thanks again! Ø tVaughn05 talkcontribs 00:29, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

I placed the following in my signature:

<span style="font-family:monospace"> <span style="color:#008800">Nick R</span>Talk</span>

Which should make the link to my user page green. However (for me at least), it just comes out the colour of a link (or visited link):

Nick RTalk

It works if I do it like this:

<span style="font-family:monospace"><span style="color:#008800">Nick R</span>Talk</span>

But I'd rather not do it that way if possible, since Wikipedia:How to fix your signature says, It's also a good idea to put the tags outside the link if possible (for instance: <font color="white">Example</font>).

So, does anyone know why isn't it working for me? -- Nick RTalk 19:42, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

This is exactly one of the situations where the "if possible" clause acts (sorry for the bogus example). The link is converted to an a element, which has a fixed colour. So, you have to change the colour inside the link. --cesarb 20:54, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! --Nick RTalk 22:35, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Uh, guys, I'm having some problems fixing my signature here, every time I do this, it didn't work. Anyone have ideas here? Thanks!
--RCT Locomotion Wikipedia 02:28, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

I got it right now.

I fixed the colour of my signature here, so you can see it. And added “monospace” to it here.
--RCT Loco Wiki | Talk 20:42, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

i just cant get it to work.

ive been trying for 2 hours now to get my sig to work. i want it to look like this (chubbstar) talk | contrib | 09:06, 11 July 2006 (UTC) .... which it does, but only when i copy and paste it. i want the simplicity of just being able to hit the "Sign your name" thing below. ive rearranged it millions of different ways according to the Wikipedia:How to fix your signature but to no avail.

i've come up with this:

<span style="font-family: monospace; font-size: larger"><font style="border: solid 2px orange; background-color: #991199" color=white>(chubbstar)</font></span> <small> — <font color="#FF4F00">talk</font> | <font color="#FF4F00">contrib</font> | <font color="#CD00CD"> ~~~~~ </font></small>

any help that anyone could offer would save me a lot of frustration.... thanks.

Have you noticed how long your signature is in code mode? Could you consider dropping the colors in it? What about something like:
(chubbstar) — talk | contrib | ~~~~~
which should give something like: (chubbstar) talk | contrib | 16:35, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Hm. Nevermind! It works now. I don't know why, but when I previewed the username appeared as bold text. Phoebus@ 14:46, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Were you doing the test preview on your own user page? If you're on a particular page and you add a self link, it will appear in bold and not as a link. E.g. Wikipedia talk:How to fix your signature --Nick RTalk 16:46, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
This is really good information. I had the same problem--could we add this to the main article?--Rob T 20:43, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
I second that: I was just battling with my signature for a long time before I came to this talk page and discovered that little feature. digfarenough (talk) 15:09, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
I put something in this effect in the main page. See what you think (is it clear, etc). -- nae'blis 18:00, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Part of your signature seems to be broken, leaving wiki code and odd characters strewn about the talk pages. You might want to fix it. eaolson 03:26, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Please do try inputting it; possibly, you would see my goal.

Is there a page where I could learn what characters I might try?

Thank You.

If that page has character substitution suggestions, then I could not locate them on the various occasions when I'd tried it. Wherever it would be, that's what I would need.

Although raw signature does make a change, it's too far in the opposite direction. When I'm on an unsigned page, I often need something that I can quickly copy|paste, in order to distinguish what I've scribed.

This has been far faster than anything else that I've tried.

So, halfway between raw, & not raw, would be my preference.

Thank You.

 • I'm not sure what you mean by "cut and paste". You should be able to insert your signature by using 4 tildes ~~~~, so no cut and pasting should be necessary. eaolson 13:46, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

No, cut. Yes, copy. The paste is not f/ the signature, only the distinction {distinguish, separation}. I do not like the appearance of a run-on hodge podge comment, unless it is sincerely mine, where I'm attempting to comment on several issues.

When other persons' comments appear that way, it is very difficult to figure what I'm responding to, & whom, historylogs, et al.

It's not at all obvious what you're trying to do with your signature. Can you write a description of what you want so we can help you sort it out? --ais523 08:41, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
The first thing to do would be to enable the "raw signature" option (it looks like it's disabled, judging by the specific damage it seems to have). After that, explain what's wrong with the signature so we can try to help you (if you get the "check HTML tags" error, check the code for errors, as explained in the project page). --cesarb 01:53, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Dear gods, please don't do that. Your signature is 20 lines long on my edit screen. If you must have a complex signature, please consider something like:
FloaterFluss (talk) (contribs)
Multicolored text is extremely hard to read, code-heavy, and lends undue weight to your signature compared to your comment or other people's comments. At the very least, your current signature contains a redlink to User:FloaterFluss (your name is not CamelCase). -- nae'blis 15:57, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Alright. How's this then? Only one and a half lines of text. (user) (talk) (contribs) 22:32, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

...except that images are discouraged in signatures, too. It's a server drain and (still) an undue weight issue. What you can do, though, is post your colorized signature in large text/image on your user page and talk page, and then anyone visiting will see your artistic skill. Seem like a workable compromise? -- nae'blis

Too long?

Is this an ok signature - I mean i know it's on the longer side, but I can't really think of any way to make it shorter (unrelated:that rainbow code up there should be put in some kinda wikipedia hall of fame) --Daniel()Folsom T|C|U 06:40, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I can think of a way to make it 2 bytes shorter. You can remove the whitespace in your CSS just before the font-size, and you can omit the redundant semicolon at the end. It becomes: <font style="font-family:Monotype Corsiva;font-size:15px">Daniel()Folsom</font> T|C|U. You should also use <span> instead of <font>, since you are using CSS to change the font, instead of the legacy font element's attributes. --cesarb 00:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

What about Daniel()Folsom T|C|U (<span style="font:15px Monotype Corsiva">Daniel()Folsom</span> <sup>T</sup>|<sub>C</sub>|<sup>U</sup> )? I've used the shortcut notation for specifying multiple font attributes at once. --ais523 12:15, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

HTML Error?

I'm trying to make my sig look like this:

 But|seriously|folks

but I can't get it to work. It's giving me a HTML error. I think I might be over by a few characters as well, and I don't know how to shorten it. (Damn my long user name!) Any advice would be appreciated. --Butseriouslyfolks 06:12, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

The HTML looks correct. The problem may be that its 271-character length is causing the end of the signature to be cut off and causing an error. Here's a not-quite-identical version (copy the code from the edit page):

 But|seriously|folks

This comes to 255 characters exactly, if I've counted correctly. (The only difference to how it appears is that in your version the vertical bars are unliked, whereas in mine they're inside the links to their left.) Dropping the contribs link is probably the easiest way to get a dramatic reduction, though. --ais523 16:03, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, but that version doesn't show the text. Is #FFF white or black? --Butseriouslyfolks 06:38, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Currently my signature ( ~ PaulC/T+) has a link to create a new section on my talk page. I'd like to remove the extra arrow that shows it is a hard link with the following div class: <div class="plainlinks"></div> to make &nbsp;~&nbsp;Paul<small>C/T<div class="plainlinks">+</div></small> I assume this would work ( ~ PaulC/

T

), but it makes my signature too long. Is there another way to achieve this with less code? ~ PaulC/T+ 18:29, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Actually, that doesn't work... the div tag creates line breaks... hmm let me try this: <div class="plainlinks">&nbsp;~&nbsp;Paul<small>C/T+</small></div> ... At least that removes the break from inside the sig... but now there is a newline just before every use of the sig... Anyone have any ideas? ~ PaulC/T+ 18:35, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Okay, span tags work: <span class="plainlinks">&nbsp;~&nbsp;Paul<small>C/T+</small></span>  ~ PaulC/T+... &nbsp;~&nbsp;Paul<small>C/T<span class="plainlinks">+</span></small>  ~ PaulC/T+ (in both cases). That still doesn't solve my problem of a too-long signature... in fact it makes it worse because span is longer than div. ~ PaulC/T+ 19:17, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Success!: &nbsp;~&nbsp;Paul<small>C/T<span class="plainlinks">[SERVER/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Psantora&action=edit&section=new +]</span></small>  ~ PaulC/T+ with sevenone characters to spare. I used the magic word SERVER to shorten my url... AFAIK, this doesn't cause any problems as long as it is subst:'ed , which happens automatically. ~ PaulC/T+ 19:56, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I think you might be able to shorten the URL further as , but I haven't tested this so I might be wrong. --ais523 15:52, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

That seems to be a valid magic word too... let me see if it works... Test:&nbsp;~&nbsp;Paul<small>C/T<span class="plainlinks">[ +]</span></small>  ~ PaulC/T+ Looks like it works great. Thanks for the help! How did you get the time in your signature? ~ PaulT+/C 05:46, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

By always typing it with three tildes and using substed magic words to produce the timestamp. Doing that really eats into character count, though. --ais523 16:59, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Need help with my signature

This should give me a signature that includes a link to my user page and talk page;

<span style="color:green">TheProf07</span> / <span style="color:green">Talk</span>

However, it only links to my user page! Can someone please help me with this?

Thanks. TheProf07 (talk) 17:18, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

So the code I have is: <font color="green" font face="Comic Sans MS">§tepshep</font><font color="green">¡Talk to me!</font>

But when I put it in the four tildes I get: <font color="green" font face="Comic Sans MS">§tepshep</font><font color="green">¡Talk to me!</font> (talk) 19:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
When I try to set it to a raw sig, I get the red error.

Any help? Thanks. §tepshep • ¡Talk to me!

HTML

.... Man this is annoying. Im trying to make my signature look like this:

RoyalMate1

But I keep getting HTML errors! Not even pasting it works... wtf? Help ASAP please!

By the way this is the code:

<font color=blue>Royal</font>'<font color=orange>Mate1</font>

Without the nowiki thing if your looking under the edit. Thanks to anyone who helps out - Royalmate1 —Preceding undated comment was added at 01:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

This article

Isn't detailed enough. What about people who want to customize their sigs but aren't HTML savvy? Especially people who want to add background color, such as I. I want to customize a sig for a user like this:Happy Editing! Love, Anna

and the code for it is this:<span style="background:black"><span style="color:#F39">Happy Editing!</span> <span style="color:#FCC">Love, Anna</span> But I get an Invalid raw signature message when I test it. What am I doing wrong? --Whip it! Now whip it good! 04:41, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Lostpedia username

Shouldn't that be: "Wikipedia username"? Kwiki (talk) 11:50, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

I corrected it two times. Kwiki (talk) 12:03, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Please help...

Changes needed?

With v 1.15, the verbage on the preferences page has changed. Should the article be changed to reflect these changes? -- Wynthyst 18:07, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Since there was no response in 2 days, I went ahead and made the corrections I felt necessary to keep the page accurate. -- Wynthyst 00:28, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Does the 255 limit include the timestamp?

Does the Signature code lengnth of 255 include the timestamp? If so, can someone try and shorten User:WebCoder11/Sig for me. --Lcawte/WebCoder11 (Talk) 21:13, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Font

Is there any way to change the font of a sig? I tried using <font=Unown>dude1818</font>, but it didn't work. Dude1818 (talk) 21:16, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Images

Can I simply add an image or images saved on my computer? It all seems so complicated... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.224.13.12 (talk) 21:29, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Help

While the code for [ is [(go into edit mode to copy it!), what's the code for ]? Help or insight would be useful.--The Master of Mayhem (talk) 12:41, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Excuse me, I posted my last comment 10 days ago! I said I wanted "help or insight". I'm sorry but I'm not one who tries to hang around, but I expect to get a reply this time.--The Master of Mayhem (talk) 16:48, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

A signature suggestion

On the off-chance that people will find this useful, I thought I'd post this here. If you've got significant amounts of HTML or CSS formatting in your signature that you use mainly to allow yourself to spot your signature easily, check out my signature suggestion. For example, when I see this page, my signature will show up with a bright green background and border, but you do not have to suffer from my color choices. :) HorsePunchKid 02:48, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Do you get the time to come out automatically? Or do you calculate it manually. If automatically, how is it done? RichardKatz. —Preceding undated comment added 06:25, 9 January 2012 (UTC).
