Charlie Gray is a British international photographer and director based in London. Gray is known for his work in celebrity portraits, fashion photography, and behind-the-scenes photography[1] in film and theatre. His notable projects include The Queen's Gambit (2020),[2] The King's Man (2021), and Downton Abbey (2019).[3] He has also collaborated on prestigious film and theatre productions such as Othello,[4] Hamlet, Betrayal,[5] and Colette.

Early life

Gray's career began at university, where he discovered photography under the guidance of photographic book publisher Stuart Smith. He developed a strong sense of narrative through documentary photography, citing Don McCullin and Martin Parr as major influences.[6]

Gray's career began with a focus on behind-the-scenes and portrait photography, primarily in the entertainment industry.[7] He has worked with major publications including Vanity Fair,[8] Vogue,[9] and Esquire.[10] His career gained significant momentum in 2008 when BAFTA commissioned him to document their awards, leading to international work with movie studios and theatre productions.[11] Notable collaborations include directors Jamie Lloyd, Sam Gold, and Ralph Fiennes. He has captured iconic figures including Robert De Niro,[12] Mike Tyson,[13] Harvey Keitel,[14] Tilda Swinton, Keira Knightley, Bill Murray, Mads Mikkelsen,[15] Kim Cattrall,[16] and Sir Anthony Hopkins.[17]

Notable photographs

One of Gray's significant works is his 2019 portrait of Robert De Niro for Vanity Fair Italia, taken on the roof of De Niro's office in New York City. Another notable photograph is his portrait of Michael Caine on the set of Harry Brown, which marked a turning point in his career.[18]

Gray has worked on projects for organizations such as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA),[19] Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal Studios, and Netflix.[20]

Exhibitions

In September 2023, Gray opened a solo exhibition titled Performance at Leica Gallery in London.[21] The exhibition featured twelve portraits of actors, artists, and musicians, showcasing Gray's narrative style.[6] The portraits included images of Robert De Niro, Ronnie Wood, and Monica Bellucci.[22]
