The 2038 FIFA World Cup will be the 26th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA.
Host selection[edit]
The bidding to host the 2038 FIFA World Cup has yet to start. Only countries from CONCACAF and OFC are eligible to host this World Cup as UEFA, CAF, and CONMEBOL will host 2030, while AFC will host 2034.
Bids[edit]
The bidding process for this World Cup has yet to start, nor has any information come out about how the bidding process will work. However, if FIFA's confederation exclusion process is still used for 2038, it is likely only North America and Oceania are allowed to host; South America, Europe and Africa can't bid due to the agreement to host the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco with the tournament due to open with celebratory games in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. Asia will be ineligible due to Saudi Arabia hosting the 2034 World Cup.
It has been speculated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosts (United States, Canada, Mexico) might host again either together or separately, possibly making Mexico the first country to host the tournament four times, and/or the United States the second country to host the World Cup three times.[1]
Thai Minister of Tourism Sermsak Pongpanich raised the possibility of Thailand bidding to host the 2038 World Cup.[2]
Potential bids such as Ghana and a joint ASEAN bid were mulled before Asian and African countries were deemed ineligible for the 2038 edition.[3] [4]
Quoting a source “ close to the file », Kyodo News reports that the company NTT Docomo Inc, the first mobile telephone operator in Japan, in charge of operating the stadium after its privatization next April, is already working on the project of installing temporary stands on the edge of the field. The system would allow it to increase to 80.000 seats, and thus include the athletics stadium for the Tokyo 2020 Games as the centerpiece of a World Football World Cup bid. As a reminder, Japan co-organized with South Korea the World Cup in 2002, the first in history on the Asian continent. But this time, the archipelago no longer wants to share. It aims to host the global tournament alone. In exchange for an offer of 52,8 billion yen, the four partners obtained the operating license for a period of 30 years, starting next year. More than enough, barring unpleasant surprises, to bring the Football World Cup back to Japan and its capital.[1]
The rumor ignites social networks and stirs up discussions in Ivorian homes after the 2023 African Cup of Nations (CAN) successfully organized in the country. The 2038 World Cup could take place in Ivory Coast, according to statements attributed to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.[2]
