Layout of this article
At least on my computer, this article is not confined to my wiki space, but goes off my screen to the right. The layout instructions are very complicated and I am not clear what to delete or change. Can anyone help? --Bduke (talk) 00:32, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Bduke:, what article are you talking about? Happy Editing--IAmChaos 04:05, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. The article is Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting. There is quite a lot of odd code in it that I do not understand. I suspect that is the problem, but of course, it might not be a problem for everybody, including the editor that added it. This talk page is fine. It is not easy to show what I am seeing, if you are seeing Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting fine. The code starting with:-:-
"{| style="background: transparent; width:100%"
is one that causes problems. What does this do, and why do we need it? The "Announcements" section is directly to the left of the "Watchlist of articles in need of attention" section. The "Article alerts" section is only about 17 characters wide and directly to the left of the "Deletions" section". Then the "Peer reviews" section is directly to the left of "Merges and renames" but wider. Further down the "Newest articles" section is directly to the left of the "Requested articles" and there is another example lower down the article. It is puzzling me!--Bduke (talk) 06:05, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- You are probably way ahead of me on this but just to help sort it out you might want to try it on a different browser to see if the problem is specific to one browser. North8000 (talk) 16:20, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Good thought. It happens on Google Chrome, which I prefer, but not on Moxilla Firefox. I guess the code in the article is for Firefox. It still needs fixing. --Bduke (talk) 23:10, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
- Ahh, sorry I thought you were talking about an article in the scope of this WikiProject, my apologies for the misunderstanding. Happy Editing--IAmChaos 21:57, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
Baron Baden-Powell merger proposal
Just a "heads-up" that there has been a proposal to merge Robert Baden-Powell, 3rd Baron Baden-Powell with Baron Baden-Powell, although apparently no talk page request for comment as yet. Alansplodge (talk) 15:22, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
- Discussion is now active at Talk:Baron_Baden-Powell#Merge_Robert_Baden-Powell,_3rd_Baron_Baden-Powell, if you have any strong views. Alansplodge (talk) 23:36, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
This has now expanded. Look at Talk:Baron Baden-Powell. There is an anon ip that keeps tagging articles for merger. Please weigh in. --evrik (talk) 13:35, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
GA help
Anyone want to tackle moving this back to GA or FA status? --evrik (talk) 21:37, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Gilwell Park needs some attention. --evrik (talk) 05:12, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

This article is up for deletion. I have suggested it should be kept, as he was an important long term official in UK Scouting. --Bduke (talk) 07:41, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Bduke:, I agree. Can you add some biographical details to the article? One paragraph, cited, would be enough to move the piece from stub to start class.--evrik (talk) 15:18, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
- Not sure I can. I doubt I have any sources on my shelves and they will not be easy to find here in Australia, and at my old age I am not going much to libraries. Someone younger in UK is needed. --Bduke (talk) 00:49, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
- There must have been an obituary in Scouting magazine (The Scout Association). I may be able to find it in our county archive. Alansplodge (talk) 11:13, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Correction, it would have been The Scouter in 1968. Alansplodge (talk) 11:14, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Well, it was saved, now we need to bulk it up. --evrik (talk) 15:39, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
Map of council camps
I recently saw a thread on a Boy Scout Volunteer Facebook group that mentioned the best list of BSA camps is the List of council camps (Boy Scouts of America) article, but that it's cumbersome to view, especially on a phone. Is there anyone interested in making a map of the active camps? GoingBatty (talk) 22:21, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
- Well, wikimapia is an option, like this entry, otherwise you can ask for help on the technical pages here on how to best format the page to be used better on a mobile device.--evrik (talk) 04:15, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Most of this can be done in Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Geographical coordinates. For an example of coordinates in lists, see List of national monuments of the United States. --jergen (talk) 11:19, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Well, scoutwiki is an option, like https://nl.scoutwiki.org/Terreinen_in_Europa --Egel Reaction? 21:43, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
