Administrator

We desperately need an administrator to work with us on this project. There are pictures that are virtually impossible to find with a valid license, and therefore we have to claim fair use. However, we know what happens they get tagged and deleted (for ex. the 2011 Pan American Games gold medal was deleted). If we have an administrator they should and can understand why a fair use claim was tagged on that photo, better then an administrator with any knowledge of the topics we cover here. Thoughts? Suggestion? Nominations? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 15:48, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, but I'm not fully convinced that images like medals can't be find under valid license, at least I can talk about Asian and Commonwealth Games, e.g. we've File:Золотая медаль Азиады-2011.JPG (2011 Asian Winter Games gold medal) and File:2010 CWG silver medal.jpg (2010 Commonwealth Games silver medal). These kind of images aren't too hard to find, you may ask any Mexican Wikipedia user [well, unfortunately I don't know anyone] to capture some Pan American Games related pictures. And I highly doubt that any administrator would ever convince to retain these types of images under fair use, as it would certainly violate the image policies of Wikipedia. — Bill william comptonTalk 16:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
By doing a quick google search it is virtually impossible to find an image. Would you like to give it a shot? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 16:32, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
I didn't get, shot for what? your proposal? — Bill william comptonTalk 17:21, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have been clearer. I meant doing a google search for a picture of the medal. As for administrator thats up to you. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 17:52, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Google searches almost always return copyrighted images and should never be used to find pictures. An admin is not desperately needed and I reject the notion that only admins understand fair use. Fair use never applies when a free image can be found, so medals would never be allowable under fair use. As BWC said, go look for any Wikipedian in Mexico and see if they can get an image of a medal. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 01:30, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
I wasn't implying that administrators are the only ones who are understand of fair use. What I was trying to say is if one of us were able to become an administrator they would understand the issue at hand. Someone else claimed fair use for that picture along with myself and other editors, but it was deleted. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 01:58, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
Intoronto, the picture you're implying wasn't really eligible for fair usage. The rule is simple– you shouldn't/can't use those picture that can be found easily, and medals aren't really too difficult to find. And as StrPby said, there is no fierce need of an admin and RfA is a very long and complicated procedure, so even if we nominate someone, it wouldn't be much helpful for that user to pass RfA. I think you should wait and watch, as perhaps any user by the date of Games may upload images you want. — Bill william comptonTalk 04:29, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

"Popular pages" for the project

I've requested a "popular pages" page for our project, it will help us to track most viewed pages within our project's scope. We've similar page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/Popular pages) for WP:Olympics, any thoughts regarding this? — Bill william comptonTalk 18:10, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

I like this idea, maybe we can split it up into the different games? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 19:11, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Agreed, I've been manually checking the page views of a few Island Games articles, this will be very helpful. SellymeTalk 20:58, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't think we could split it up into different Games, as the request can only be made by mentioning the WikiProject, as bot runs by tracking information from project's template used on the talk page, for more information check here. — Bill william comptonTalk 04:19, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I see what you mean. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 05:04, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Excellent resources

I've had some free time to delve into academia. Here are just some relevant materials on the domain of the multi-sport event.

  1. Mega-Sporting Events in Asia — Impacts on Society, Business and Management: An Introduction (article entry) (PDF)
  2. The Global Politics of Sport: The Role of Global Institutions in Sport (Google Books) (Amazon.com)
  3. The sociologist Maurice Roche has written many books on (sport) mega-events, many of which I listed but lost after IE crashed a few minutes ago ($!#$%#^!!%)
  4. Mega-Events and Modernity: Olympics and Expos in the Growth of Global Culture (Google Books) (Amazon.com) (book review)
  5. The SAGE Handbook of Nations and Nationalism, Chapter 22
  6. Multi-Sport Athletes in the Ancient Games (The LA84 Foundation's library houses many useful materials; do a search for 'multi-sport event' on its website)

I'm too distraught since the list was almost entirely destroyed by a crashed browser. Grr. ANGCHENRUI WP:MSE 14:23, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

For those (myself included) covering somewhat unknown events, remember that although the specific webpages for each MSE are likely to be non-existent now, the Web Archiver is your friend! SellymeTalk 23:47, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm living on Wayback Machine for Asian Games' past results. — Bill william comptonTalk 16:48, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Talking of resources, I now have a copy of - The Lands That FIFA Forgot. It's got some semi-decent info about the history of the Island Games (very much with a focus on football). I'll dig through it when I can and add anything useful - no promises on when I'll have time to do this, though.
I've also got various bits of info from my trip to the Isle Of Wight last week - general programme for the whole event, specific programmes for Football and Basketball, individual game programmes from five football matches. I've also got a bunch of photos to upload at some point. It'll all take a while, and I get easily distracted, so drop a note on my talk page if there's anything specific you want to know. --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 13:16, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
I recommend you just chuck everything into a .zip, upload to filefront or megaupload, and send me the link. I can sort through everything, see what we can use. SellymeTalk 14:09, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

How do you cite an e-mail?

The heading says it all, how do you cite an e-mail? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 21:16, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

I would avoid citing personal correspondence unless it has been previously published in RS. StrPby (talk) 22:03, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
I recieved an e-mail from the head of the NatWest Island Games regarding competitor participation, due to server limitations they were unable to publish this data on the website. It's a reliable source, though it is unpublished. Citing e-mails would be helpful. SellymeTalk 02:58, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Thing is I got the e-mail by mistake, and according to the e-mail it should be destroyed if not it was not meant for you. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 03:18, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that emails can't be used as valid source of reference. I remember a similar case, hope it would be helpful. — Bill william comptonTalk 03:43, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
This discussion already has more people involved than that one, so it's not a very good example :P.
Although, it's similar to saying "Person x said that 'object y causes effect z'". You can't source what someone said, which is a huge problem in scenarios such as the Island Games where a lot of information I added came from the organisers telling me stuff. The officials ARE a reliable source, regardless of whether or not the information is published. SellymeTalk 08:23, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, but then the information is not verifiable. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 09:47, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Are there any laws against the publishing of private correspondence? Or would publishing the information (despite the fact it's not mine) be WP:OR? SellymeTalk 10:23, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Not sure about the OR, but yes it would definitely fail the criteria of reliability, as this type of source can easily be tampered, and really I'm not pointing on you. I suggest to take this rationale at VPP, as in my knowledge only they have privilege of changing policies or adding any new. — Bill william comptonTalk 17:38, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Where to host images?

So I have an image that provides as a reference and I need to host it somewhere. Any suggestions? (no I am not interested in opening an account with a third party website) Intoronto1125TalkContributions 02:53, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Imgur. SellymeTalk 03:29, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Can we find this image online already? Otherwise, uploading it yourself and using it as a reference would be strongly discouraged. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 15:34, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Well I received it through e-mail from the governing body of cycling in the Americas and does have the signature of the president. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 16:17, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
As Bill william compton and I have pointed out in the section directly above this, personal correspondence can be forged and you would find it extremely difficult to pass it off as a reliable source. I am very concerned that we're going down this route to source out information and would strongly urge all project members to stick to policy on this. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 16:35, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
I e-mailed the president of the governing body directly. Why would he want to forge the document? Besides the sourcing is relatively minor as that is to backup the information I have put it really isn't necessary to the article. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 16:56, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
He wouldn't, but there is a possibility that allegations can be made against the uploader of the document. For instance I've a copy of the doha-2006.com which hosts past results of the Asian Games, but I can't use those pages as website has been shutdown, and there is no way I could prove their reliability. — Bill william comptonTalk 17:32, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
For websites that no longer exist, Wikipedia policy allows using the Wayback Machine as a reference, so you can just use that. With regards to the image issue however, if it has a signature I'd say it's definitely reliable. I know WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS but if we use FOX News as a "Reliable Source", I honestly doubt that the off chance that someone would create a fake photo, forge an official signature on to it, and then use it as a reference for a sports article is of paramount concern. WP:Be Bold, anyone with common sense would know it wouldn't be forged. Policies need not apply to a case where everyone involved can clearly see it's not really that important. SellymeTalk 05:50, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm aware of Wayback Machine and I also use it, but here I'm taking about those pages which are not even available on Wayback Machine. — Bill william comptonTalk 06:50, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
The article in question is Cycling at the 2011 Pan American Games – Qualification and the image is not necessarily needed, as one could look at the results of the qualification tournaments and plug in the qualifications. However, that is sort of like OR and the image (which was pretty close to what I put up manually) is needed until at least the start of the games. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Multi-sport events to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Multi-sport events/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 01:51, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Importance and Rating

I propose that we (that is, anyone reading) attempt to kick this project up again with a little wiki-drive, starting this Friday and continuing to Sunday night in order to rate the quality and importance of as many articles on our project list as possible. There's far too many "???"'s on the most viewed pages list for my liking, and far too many pages for me to realistically do it on my own. Anyone else got the spare time to help out? SellymeTalk 11:46, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

I will start ASAP. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 13:53, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
I have tagged the top 100 articles that did not have its quality or importance rated. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 15:59, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
This is a part of my routine (but with moderate rate). Will fill the templates as much as possible by the end of week. — Bill william comptonTalk 16:59, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Dew Tour

The 67th item on the above stats, Dew Tour [1], was created in Feb 2008 and speedy deleted recently after OlYeller21 (talk · contribs) tagged it as {{g11}} and an edit summary of "See Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Dew_Tours". I couldn't find this ANI thread. Does anyone know what this is about? John Vandenberg (chat) 03:54, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for finding that. More info at User:OlYeller21/Prob/Dew Tours - Alliance of Action Sports. I'm not surprised a lot of the associated articles were deleted, but Dew Tour looks redeemable. John Vandenberg (chat) 04:08, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
If you think it's salvageable, and if it isn't copyvio, could you dump a copy of the page into my userspace? I'll have a look and see if I can make it my next project. Thanks. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 10:20, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
here it is User:Strange Passerby/Dew Tour. The 2005 and 2006 subpages were spawned from the main page by Esprit15d (talk · contribs) in 2006, and all of the subpages contain tables of winners like you would expect. --John Vandenberg (chat) 10:38, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Looks interesting... probably could stub it at the very least although I think there should be enough to get a decent article out of it. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 14:25, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Categories for sports festivals

Sports festival redirects to Multi-sport event, so this WikiProject must have the experts on the subject. Should Category:Sports festivals by country and all its immediate contents be nominated for renaming along the lines of "Multi-sport events"? or are they fine as they are? (I've only just added them into the head category Category:Multi-sport events -- they were not connected into that hierarchy before.) - Fayenatic (talk) 18:15, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Interesting I wasn't aware of this, I would agree with you they should be renamed. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 20:56, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Not a good idea, this hierarchy contains subcategories/articles of other WikiProjects too, like Category:Sports festivals in England contains — 1975 Cricket World Cup (WP Cricket), World Snooker Championships (WP Snooker), 2011 BWF World Championships (WP Badminton), 1984 Summer Paralympics (WP Olympics), etc. As we already have too much on our plate, it would just overflow everything. — Bill william comptonTalk 22:16, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
I suggest then we do a serious cleanup, because as the above post states sports festivals redirects to multi sports events which is what we cover here at this project. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 22:38, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Intoronto, there's no need of "serious cleanup", having a redirect of sports festival to multi-sport events can't be a possible rationale. Single sport tournaments like world championships or world cups also considered as sport festivals. I think we should leave things as they are! a redirect was made to multi-sport event because there is a no article for "Sport festival". — Bill william comptonTalk 11:50, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

If "sports festival" means multi-sport event, and a straw poll of my colleagues indicates that it does, then any single-sport event within that category tree should be removed, and recategorised within Category:Sports competitions by sport and by country if not already in those. "Sports festival" does sound a bit vague, so I don't blame editors for putting other stuff in those categories in good faith, but re-naming them as "multi-sports events" would stop that. - Fayenatic (talk) 16:30, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

I think "sports festivals" has been treated as a general phrase to denote sporting championships and games. The phrase arises because there is a common idea behind these two (high profile, top-tier, non-seasonal, host-rotating sporting events). Simply using either "championships" or "multi-sport events" would create a division which isn't entirely necessary. It is easy to discern these types of competitions from the more low-level, fixed-location, annual events (e.g. Malaysian Grand Prix) which would be more helpfully contained in the broader "Sport in X" categories. For example, I think many users like the division (in principle, if not name) between Category:Sports festivals in London and Category:Sport in London. SFB 23:27, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I would never merge that to "Sports in London"; but an intermediate category Category:Sports competitions in London is probably needed–now in place. - Fayenatic (talk) 11:00, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Although the above was not conclusive, I have now started the nomination at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2011 August 24#Sports festivals by country. I did mention the objections raised above. Please continue this discussion there. - Fayenatic (talk) 19:59, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Biography scope

Regarding edits such as this. Is this stepping beyond our scope? For me, a person would have to have more significant connections to the idea of multi-sport events for them to fall into the project scope; for example, people directly involved in the administration/foundation etc. of a multi-sport event.

Surely being a mere participant is not enough? I worry that extending the project scope in this direction would definitively move it towards a sports biography-based project rather than an events-based one. SFB 23:32, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

I find myself in total agreement. Leave the sports biographies to WP:WPBIO and WP:WPSPORTS. The only biographies we should be tagging as ours is those of people closely related to multi-sport events, e.g. Goodwill Games founder Ted Turner. I feel that adding our project tag to so many existing athlete articles is merely a simple way of padding our stats, which I do not like. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 01:57, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
I agree as well, and biographies of athletes whose claim to fame was winning a medal at a multi-sporting event. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 02:07, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
To an extent maybe. But that would have to be specific: if their only claim to notability on Wikipedia is a medal at a multi-sport event, then yes, I'd say they count. For people who are also Olympic medallists, or World medallists, I would say not. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 02:22, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
For example badminton athlete Pedro Yang who has only won medals at the Pan American Games. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 02:35, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
That's an interesting one. He competed at Athens 2004 which makes him Wikipedia-notable for competing at an Olympics. In those cases I would lean against tagging him as part of our project scope, but I'd like to hear other opinions. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 02:37, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
Just competing at a one Olympic Games is not notable, especially if they didn't go far. What makes him notable in my opinion is the medals he won at the Pan American Games. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 02:56, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
Just competing at a one Olympic Games is not notable — well, WP:NSPORT says otherwise. :) Strange Passerby (talkcont) 02:59, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
But again the question comes how we'll decide who's more "closely related to MSEs". Many athletes like Lin Dan, Leander Paes, Liu Xiang, Lee Chong Wei, Ian Thorpe, Li Na, Nicol David, are very much significant to either Asian or Commonwealth Games context I'm not much aware of the Pan Am Games, but almost all of them have won medals in Olympics too, but they are considered elite in their respective regional Games. So, wouldn't they come under our project's scope? if not then why? because IMO their participation in the MSEs (except OLY) is crucial in many ways. WPOLYMPICS also consider all participants of Summer/Winter Olympics under its scope. — Bill william comptonTalk 04:01, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
It's a much easier decision when the project is an event-specific one like the Olympics. This is a general event project. Bear in mind that extending the scope to games medallists would probably factor in over a hundred thousand biographies (including virtually all our articles on swimmers, divers, athletes, amateur boxers, volleyball players, equestrianists, gymnasts, hockey players, pentathletes, rowers, sailers, shooters, table tennis players, triathletes, weightlifters, and wrestlers). Would adding the 100,000 Pan American Games medallists really be an improvement of the project scope? SFB 11:26, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
So, I guess it won't be wrong if biographies of Asian Games medalists covered under the Asian Games task force because "it is an event-specific" task force. I agree on excluding others. — Bill william comptonTalk 11:44, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

2011 Pan American Games

Hey, I didn't know where to post this for you to know. I would edit it my self if it was text, as i usually do, but i don't know how to deal with images within wikipedia. Please notice that in the Pan American Games article, in the image http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:Pan_American_Games_host_countries.png there is a mistaken reference. one of the Red dots describing "Cities that have hosted Pan American Games" shouldn't be there, nor anywhere (i've checked the remaining dots). This dot is missplaced in the west-central part of Argentina, close to Mendoza city and near Chile, and its dated "1990" (that year no Panamerican Game took place). I would be glad if anyone could delete it. Thank You VM. Campe Sorry for my english! Sports festival/multi-sport category discussion

I just want to draw attention to the discussion going on here about the renaming of the "sports festivals" categories. Note that a previous discussion ended with the conclusion of renaming the "sports festivals" categories to "multi-sport events" categories. This is now being reconsidered. Discussion was clearly lacking in the original suggestion and input towards formulating a decision would be very welcome. SFB 18:24, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Summer Universiade 2011 – Weightlifting

Hello!

I don't know exactly to who to turn in this situation, but since the Universiade is within the scope of this project I thought this might be the best place.

Not much after the +105kg finals were finished, news came up that the Egyptian weightlifter was caught with doping allegations, and today it was made official that he is guilty and they took his gold medal, which is awarded now to former second placed Peter Nagy. International Weightlifting Federation reports, that

"FISU officially confirmed the disqualification of Mohamed Masoud Ihssan (EGY), originally +105kg gold medal winner at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China due to his positive doping result. According to the updated results, the new Universiade Champion is Péter Nagy (HUN) who achieved the same Total of 412kg." (source)

Due to my lack of knowledge where to find the results and who to move up to second and third place respectively, I would like to ask your help. For the same reasons I just cannot update the medal tables with the proper results.

Event

Do any of the sports and games organizations (governing body of a sport or game, administrator of a "multi-sport event", administrator of a meet in one sport or game) use the term "event" in the high-level comprehensive sense of this wikiproject and the main article multi-sport event?

Or do they use "event" in narrow sense, low-level sense (and perhaps avoid using "competition" as a countable noun), near or even at the front/head/bottom of this phrase:

  • the pole-vault event of the men's decathlon event of the athletics event of the 2012 summer olympic(s) event

There is some tendency at wikipedia to say this or nearly this (and your own project puts "event" at the back/foot/top):

  • the pole-vault discipline of the men's decathlon competition of the athletics sport of the 2012 summer olympic event

I wonder whether this is a wikipedia neologism, or derives from the hospitality industry, without yet much use in the sporting industry. Alternatively, it may be the one or the other or another with primarily geographical variation in the English-speaking world. --P64 (talk) 20:12, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Naming of Stadiums

When naming stadiums do we include the sponsors name if the stadium will be known to that title for only two weeks? What I am referring to is the 2015 Pan American Games. The athletics stadium will be known as the CIBC Pan Am and Parapan Am Athletics Stadium during the games but before and after them as Pan Am and Parapan Am Athletics Stadium. Any thoughts and/or opinions? Intoronto1125TalkContributions 23:01, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Personally I'd use the non-sponsored name, Wikipedia's policy is to use the common name and the fact that the sponsored name will only be in use for two weeks means the non-sponsored name is probably more common. --Kafuffle (talk) 11:06, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hockey at the Commonwealth Games

I propose these articles be renamed to field hockey at the commonwealth games. Considering many people use hockey to stand for ice hockey it just doesn't work to have "hockey" as the title. It should have the word field to be more descriptive. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 23:28, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Advice on completing Universiade logos

Some Universiade editions doesn't have the logos. Found it here but not sure what to do, since saving the logos from the site and upload them directly to Wikipedia is not a good idea. Advice needed. Griff88 (talk) 09:17, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

2014 Lusophony Games are just days away! Osplace 01:49, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:17, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Multi-sport events templates

They are not nominated for deletion, but for merging into a generic template which serves the same purpose. Please do not spread disinformation. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:25, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Category- Athletes by sport and games and year

I have proposed that the above category types be upmerged to the main "Games athletes" category (which are almost exclusively empty) e.g. Category:Asian Games go players contains only Category:Asian Games go players by year - I think categories Category:Go players at the 2010 Asian Games‎ should be in the main Asian Games go players category . This affects Pan American, Asian, and Commonwealth Games. SFB 18:03, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Flag usage on sports articles

A discussion has begun to outline usage of flags on sports articles and to review their usage. Sports articles have long diverged from what is stated in the manual of style. Sports festivals

Hi all - please note I have requested that all "sports festival" categories be renamed to "International sports competitions". Please contribute to the discussion. SFB 12:36, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Following on from this move I've created the Category:Multi-sport events by country structure. These contain international, national and sub-national multi-sport events. SFB 13:00, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
I've pretty much finished with a large overhaul of the main multi-sport article base and categories. Plenty of new categories to be explored in Category:Multi-sport events now. There is one outstanding issue within Category:Sports at multi-sport events. I've proposed that we move all these "XYZ Games events" articles to "Sports at the XYZ Games" instead, seeing as the events themselves are always categorised by the sport. Please contribute at the discussion. SFB 17:44, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Templates for Nations at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

I've posted most of the templates for event results for the Commonwealth Games in my sandbox. Most of the credit goes to Sportsfan 1234 for creating most of the stuff. JoshMartini007 (talk) 22:21, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Photos at Commonwealth Games venues

The terms of Glasgow 2014 tickets placed tight restrictions on the use of photos taken inside the venues, making such photos incompatible with free licences. London 2012 tickets had similar terms, but from what I remember the consensus was that such terms were essentially unenforceable. Has there been any similar discussion in relation to Glasgow 2014? To be honest, Getty is not going to be put out of business by my 200mm lens from the cheap seats, but even grainy photos would be better than nothing of some of the more obscure athletes, and I did get one or two nice closeups. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Some sports events of the Asian Games are classified in a group. Tennis and soft tennis are in tennis, baseball and softball are in baseball, beach volleyball and volleyball are in volleyball at the Asian Games. Soft tennis at the 2014 Asian Games and Softball at the 2014 Asian Games are separated but Beach volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games not. Like soft tennis and softball, Beach volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games should be separated from Volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games. Also Universiade, Youth Olympics, All-Africa Games, Pan American Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, Mediterranean Games, Island Games, Bolivarian Games, South American Games, Lusophony Games, and Pacific Mini Games are separated. Sawol (talk) 08:05, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

I agree they should be separated. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 03:22, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Note: There should be one concensus for all multi-sport events. An option is to do it the French way, to have one page about both volleybal and beach volleybal and 2 seperate pages for beach volleybal and indoor volleybal, see for instance fr:Volley-ball aux Jeux olympiques d'été de 2012 Sander.v.Ginkel (Je suis Charlie) 14:50, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Split The sport Olympic pages are seperated: Volleyball at the Summer Olympics and Beach volleyball at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Also Rugby union and Rugby sevens are split for the Olympics. In the schedule of 2012 Summer Olympics#calendar it's unclear that also beach volleybal is a sport: it looks like only volleybal is contested. However before a deciding and changing about 100 wiki pages and creating seperate pages, many more people should respond first. Sander.v.Ginkel (Je suis Charlie) 15:04, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Oppose first I was waiting for more responses to write a comment here. but it seems the nominator didn't take the advise "to not move pages before more people respond". I did revert all his edits. second we have separate pages for each event. so the page isn't even big but this is not my main reason, personally I'm not that against this move but There should be one concensus for all multi-sport events. people in Olympic project decided to keep volleyball and beach volleyball in the same page, so before any move you have to ask for this move in Olympic project talk page, the "Asian Games" better just follow what wikipedians do for Olympic project. Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:00, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
here is the link for the latest discussion in Olympic project about splitting volleyball and beach volley page. if anybody thinks that's not a good idea you can open another one in Olympic project talkpage. personally I most probably will vote for "splitting" but until that day I prefer to keep it similar to Olympic pages. Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:22, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
User:Mohsen1248 has made no response till now. Template talk:Events at the 2014 Asian Games, User talk:Mohsen1248#Beach volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games and here. He did not give any advises. He did not contribute to any discussion. He just reverted. No objection may be agreeable. Does he want how many people respond? I am dissatisfied with his late appearance. Sawol (talk) 01:36, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
I Support doing this via the french method described by Sander.v.Ginkel — Preceding unsigned comment added by StudiesWorld (talkcontribs) 01:12, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Split Oppose, My preference is the Olympic way. Is both, one and splitted. Just click Beach volleyball at the 2012 Summer Olympics and you will realise is redirect, both there are separate articles about women's and men's indoor and beach volleyball. Osplace 02:47, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Comment @Osplace:, does it mean you support the current format for the Olympic page ? because this is exactly what we have for the Asian Games page right now. there are separate articles about women's and men's indoor and beach volleyball. if I got it right, then you are actually voting for not splitting. please enlighten me in this. Mohsen1248 (talk) 22:46, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Comment @Mohsen1248:, yes Split like current Olympic and the latest Asian Games. Osplace 01:24, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Comment @Osplace:, thanks, so in fact you are voting for keeping the current format. I think in this case you should write "oppose" instead. Mohsen1248 (talk) 15:04, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Osplace contributed to or created Beach volleyball at the 2007 Pan American Games and Beach volleyball at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, split away from Volleyball at the 2007 Pan American Games. I think Osplace supports this split proposal. Sawol (talk) 02:01, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I have contributed to many volleyball and beach volleyball articles in multi sports events recent and past. We are here to reach a consensous. They way I support is the Olympic way. Not a separate article for beach volleyball like the ones someone just mentioned I have worked with. Osplace 23:37, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Editors for Pacific Games

Hi, if there are volunteers who would like to help include the Pacific Games in the encyclopedia – in particular the events of the 2015 Pacific Games which start next month, July 2015 – please post a reply in this section.

I have created the pages below for the missing early Games to fill in the blanks and, although they are all referenced, most are Start class or C class at best. If anyone has access to source material for these (or indeed the more recent editions) feel free to improve the articles.

Pacific Games:
Mini Games:

A start has been made on the disciplines for 2015 but most pages still don't exist –

2015:

Any help would be appreciated for these (should you be able to convert some of the red links) or the other pages needed for the 2015 Pacific Games. Thank you -- Ham105 (talk) 22:07, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Many thanks to User:JoshMartini007 for creating so many sports pages. I have also made a start on the country pages below, although I have not found a comprehensive official source for the athletes selected for each country yet. This means searching for sources is needed.
Any help would be appreciated for these (should you be able to convert some of the red links) or the other pages needed for the 2015 Pacific Games. Thank you -- Ham105 (talk) 09:00, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

All of the above pages are now created. A few (in particular PNG and Fiji) still need to be expanded with athletes names for most sports. All pages will also need to be updated with details of medals won by athletes. Any help would be appreciated for these (should you be able do so). Thank you -- Ham105 (talk) 18:51, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
