An editor has suggested that the scope of the WP:Boston project be changed from a focus on the history and culture of the City of Boston to the entire census-defined Boston MSA, which covers large areas within the scope of this project. Picture request

There's a Thomas Eakins painting on display in the Brockton Musuem of Art in Brockton, MA. The painting is the Portrait of Walter Copeland Bryant. See List of works by Thomas Eakins, #372.

Sure, no harm in that. But in my experience, Wikipedian photographers are much more likely to see a photo request in a photography category than in a Wikiproject talk page. I am, anyway. :-) Tim Pierce (talk) 19:44, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Couple final questions re: Massachusetts GA nom

Hi - lately I've been doing some work in trying to get Massachusetts up to a GA; it's coming together - all that is really needed now is an expanded intro, rewritten and referenced Geography section, and a climate section - but I have a few questions that I'd like someone with more experience with the place than I have to take a look at.

• First, I need someone to basically read through the Arts and Culture section and make sure nothing is really off - as in if an event mentioned no longer takes place or if something is missing but really should be mentioned that isn't currently mentioned. You don't have to do any major work here, (of course, you can if you want) but basically I would just like a local to have a look.

• Second, I'd like to mention a few current local political issues - in other words, not something like "taxes" or something. For instance, at the end of the politics section for South Dakota, I made a quick mention of a few issues such as video lottery that are sort of important locally though perhaps not nationally.

• Third, I still need to write a climate section - this is just going to be a general thing showing general climate info and stats and stuff - just a few paragraphs (Again, South Dakota is a good example of what I'll be trying to do). As for severe weather, I was going to mention (with references, if I can find them) that tornadoes are rare but do occur once in a while, hurricanes occur but not so much as Florida or Louisiana, and also mention Nor'easters. I found a good reference for some of this, but it would be a big help if someone could bring to my attention specific hurricanes or other events that need to be mentioned (I don't really want to trawl through 'List of Hurricanes'...) One looks good, but I know that there is the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and one in Springfield. For number two, you could talk about the corruption that has occured recently in the state, that of Dianne Wilkerson. I also know that Lowell virtually worships the late Paul Tsongas, so I don't know if that is worth mentioning since I know Barnstable didn't worship both Kennedys and Kirk. The weather section could be tied into that of the rest of New England. We haven't had a hurricane since Bob in 1991, so we're really overdue. Sometimes I know it goes subzero on the Cape and the last time this happened around six years ago, they closed schools. You could mention the Worcester tornado of 1953 as that killed many people and was the last true one in the state. I mean there have been others, but they are usually F1 or F2. The Worcester one was officially an F4 but I know some people are trying to lobby to get it changed to F5 as it was so destructive. You could also talk about the spring floods that have occured in the state. This past March we had two major floods in the Boston area around two weeks apart. I know that when the second one happened, areas around Boston were flipping out while the people on the Connecticut River valley were just mentioning it. One interesting tidbit, since Lowell has the Merrimack dammed, when they get a flood, there is one gate that prevents the destruction of the city shown here. If you want more pictures User:CSZero has a site or two that he created that are a wealth of knowledge. There was also the ice storm that occured in December of 2008 and that caused a bunch of damage to areas north of Spencer and as far east as Lowell. It was also destructive because nothing melted for a long time. Additionally, there was a time when the jet stream quite literally fell out of the sky over the cape in December 2005. This link is a pretty accurate representation of what happened. I remember that day that they were predicting a warm rain storm. It then got windy and much colder out and snow started to fall. Basically a blizzard occured with less than an inch of snow present and many trees were taken down on the eastern side of the Cape. After writting all that, I realized that I am a heavy geek and I guess I should get a life. If you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help. Thanks a lot - I've just added a bit about the other two orchestras (I was worried the whole time about making the article too Boston-centric, so those help). I'll work on the climate stuff over the next few days - I guess I overestimated the hurricane thing a bit - I was under the impression it was like one minor one a year and a major one a decade or something, but looking at List of hurricanes in New England, it looks like the ones that do get there are mostly just rain and a bit of wind by that time. I'll probably focus more on the flooding and winter storms and things like that, perhaps also mention the Worcester tornado you were talking about. AlexiusHoratius 22:09, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Massachusetts Literary map from Massachusetts Center for the Book

The Massachusetts Center for the Book has an online (and print) map with information about various locations around the state which are related to books, authors, poets, etc. This could be useful for Massachusetts' literary-related articles, especially those with little existing information.
