Project rename

I renamed the project so that it only has one WikiProject in it. I figured now was the time to do it before the project gets too far. I hope it doesn't cause too many problems. --Beirne (talk) 09:57, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

I hate to bring up an issue early in the project, but we might as well settle this early. What is the geographic scope of the article? As described in the project it is the City of Cleveland, but I see Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls got put in the project. I do of course know that the Cleveland Orchestra plays there in the summer, but it is an indirect sort of indirect Cleveland article. I'm normally a stickler for making sure city articles do not include suburban stuff, but I figure a project can have any scope the members want. I can think of a few possibilities:

1. Make it City of Cleveland only. This will probably be overly strict.
2. Make it City of Cleveland and related articles throughout Greater Cleveland. I think this is what it is working out to now unofficially.
3. Make is into a Greater Cleveland project.

I'm all for the democratic process... let's call a vote. I'm leaning toward #2, but keeping it more limited to GC articles that have direct ties to Cleveland proper (I tagged Blossom due to its connection the the Orchestra).Ryecatcher773 (talk) 13:56, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

I would also favor option 2. Typically, when people from the area say they're "from Cleveland" they mean the greater Cleveland area - in actuality, they may be from areas as far out as Lorain, Mentor, or Brecksville.THD3 (talk) 14:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

For our purposes at present, Beirne, I'd say that makes sense. Who knows though -- at some point, if the interest in the project gains enough momentum perhaps we will follow the example of, say, Wikiproject Chicago, which takes into account the 6-county area known collectively known to many here as 'Chicagoland', and expand to cover the Greater Cleveland area in a broad scope..Ryecatcher773 (talk) 05:19, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Suggestions: Criteria for inclusion of WikProject Cleveland's scope

• Articles that pertain directly to people, places and things that are in Cleveland.
• Articles that pertain to historic events that occurred in and/or had a significant impact on Cleveland (e.g. Hough Riots).
• Articles that have indirect or limited links to Cleveland's geography, even though the subject of the article may exceed and/or occur mainly outside the boundaries of the city of Cleveland proper (e.g. Mayfield Road, the Metroparks)
• Articles that have an indirect connection to Cleveland organizations, even though the subject of the article falls outside the parameters of the city of Cleveland proper (e.g. Blossom).

Cleveland FA

The more I look at the Cleveland article, the less it seems like FA material to me. It has lots of one-sentence paragraphs and bulleted lists like in Demographics and Education. The article was promoted to FA several years ago (2005 with the last review in 2007) and FA standards have improved since then. Any other thoughts? --JonRidinger (talk) 20:04, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

The article used to have prose for the demographics and education sections (until very recently for the demographics section), but the text was replaced with the lists. I've been meaning to restore and update the demographics paragraph, but haven't had the opportunity. The schools material needs more work. I don't understand why the article has two sections on schools, one under demographics and the other under education. - Eureka Lott 20:18, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

If there is one article that is essential to this project, it should go without saying that its this one. The 'demographics' subheading is the more substantive of the two educatio sections, with the other one being nothing more than a list (which could be removed and/or re-located to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District article. The city article should cover the essentials on all topics concerned, but any appropriate subject with more than a paragraph or two on any specific subject warrants its own article with an appropriate see also: prompt.Ryecatcher773 (talk) 17:40, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Just to let you know that you have Category:High-importance WikiProject Cleveland articles and also Category:High-importance Cleveland articles. Ditto with all the other importance categories. Flag of Cleveland

Greetings from the project 1½ hours east of you! This has been bugging for a long time now: What do the symbols in the upper part of the shield on the flag of Cleveland look like? Currently the appear to something from a Rorschach test. In the upper left-hand corner there are anvil, a hammer and a wheel, and in the upper an anchor, windlass and oars. Because these are all superimposed over each other, at that resolution you're right... it does look like a Rorschach. Unfortunately, other than this website: http://www.usflags.com/products/Cleveland-Flag-City-of.asp , I haven't seen a better image online, and even that one is a bit too small to really make out. Cleveland articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates

We'd prefer to not consolidate, as each WikiProject has a certain sense of TLC attended to its own set of articles, and in this case, ours (WP-Cleveland) is fine the way it is. By no means would I dissuade you from adding articles to your WP-USA which also fall into our our project's scope, but we like to keep things the way they are, thanks. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. These articles need fleshing out: Rockefeller Park and Cleveland Cultural Gardens

I'm in Chicago (and have been for some while) and inasmuch am unable to get photos, access historical society info from Cleveland/Cuyahoga County, etc. Would a present-day native be able to flesh these out, preferably with snapshots for both? There is stuff here that are part of the National Registry of Historic Places, yet not one of them -- or the park itself for that matter -- have articles. Request: A free picture of John Adams (the guy who drums at Indians games)

Hi everyone,

I've decided I'm going to get John Adams (drummer) to Good Article status. Trouble is, I could use a good, more recent photo of him. I have a copyrighted image of him at the last game in Cleveland Stadium, and there are probably thousands of photos of him throughout the years, but I figure I should get one that is under a free license or something... I know next to nothing about copyright laws, but I know enough about Wikipedia to know this is the way to go. Can anyone help me find one? Or maybe you've even taken one yourself that you wouldn't mind releasing? Or just some advice on how to proceed would help.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project.
