Hi. I'm translating PRC provinces articles in Italian. Does the Infobox PRC province template exist? I can't find it. Thank's.

Interested in project

[edit]

Hi, I am interested in taking part in this project. Do you have any external resources about some detailed information (population, area etc.) of the provinces? --Lorenzarius

The population can be gotten from the Fifth National Census (第五次全国人口普查) result from last year (here). The area can be old area since it mostly unchanged. Density can be calculated. Rest of data can't really be gotten from a single source. Some provinces have websites that describe itself to promote investment.

As of right now, anyone who wishs to participate can list their name on the project. --voidvector

[edit]

I think putting a conversion log on the project page maybe useful. --Lorenzarius

communication

[edit]

How do you guys (voidvector, Lorenzarius, Olivier) communicate with each other to agree upon a format of the province? Is it discussed on IRC, the newsgroup or other means?. The page is obviously lacking signs of communication among participants where other wikipedians can enter the discussion and contribute. -- User:kt2

hmmm... you're right, voidvecter started it and I joined, but I think the format by voidvector is very well-done already. Do you have any suggestions? --Lorenzarius
Well I can contribute to some histories of some provinces. Another question. Do we use the format for defunct Chinese provinces, like Rehe, Chahaer, Suiyuan, Fengtian, Xikang etc. ? kt2
Defunct provinces? Although the scope of the project is all the PRC provinces, I can see no reason that we shouldn't apply the template to those. Some parts of the template may not be applicable, though it is not a big problem. (However I would prefer to let those articles stay in their original form) --Lorenzarius

questions

[edit]

Questions: (see Hebei)

  • should the transportation paragraph be under "tourism", "economy" or "Miscellaneous topics". I would be more in favor of "economy".
  • where do we place the list of major cities? In the definition paragraph or in geography?

olivier 12:26 Jan 16, 2003 (UTC)

I would favor "economy" as well for "transportation".
I have been putting "cities" under "geography", even though I originally listed it under "demographics". (I forgot about it myself.) I originally put it under "demographics" because "demographics" is about human population. (WikiProject U.S. States puts "cities" under its own paragraph.)
My original template is just my brainstorm of things. Feel free to add, modify, and remove.
--voidvector
I would prefer transportation and cities get their own paragraphs. -- User:kt2
Transportation should get a paragraph on its own. Neither geography nor tourism can properly fit that well with transportation. We should be looking at major provincial air/seaports, roads, rail and expressways. --DF08 18:34, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

complete article?

[edit]

I was wondering what constitutes a complete article. --voidvector

I would say everything comprises a successful article with degree of detail defined by readability. A section gets its won article if users add so much about it. All wikipedia articles are not and will never be considered finished with everyday contributions. User:kt2

Fujian history

[edit]

Guys, mind if you check out my history section on Fujian. Is it too long, too concise or just about enough? I'm trying to write sections of similar length on other provinces and would like to have an idea if you are happy with it. Thanx. User:kt2

It is very well-done! Actually I think that the history section can be a seperate article and we can leave a brief summary on the main province page (just like the WikiProject Countries and US States etc.). --Lorenzarius

Municipalities

[edit]

I am pasting below the conversation from Talk:Chongqing. It is probably applicable to other municipalities. olivier 07:29 Jan 22, 2003 (UTC)

I think it would be better to use the title "Chongqing" for "Chongqing city" and add a link to "Chongqing Municipality" on the page. Since most of the other articles refer to "Chongqing city" as "Chongqing". (Please pardon my poor expressions.) --Lorenzarius 15:34 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)

New articles mentioning the Municipality will probably simply call it "Chongqing" too. If we follow your suggestion, these links will lead to the City, and that might be confusing. Before changing the name of the "Chongqing city", I would suggest that we create the "Chongqing Municipality" article, and see how many articles link to each of them. If there is a big majority linking to the city, then it might be a good idea to make the change you are suggesting. olivier 15:41 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
You mean these? =) --Lorenzarius 15:46 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
Exactly. 12 for "Chongqing city" and 13 for "Chongqing Municipality". Maybe we should leave the article names like this for the moment and keep disambiguating at "Chongqing". olivier 15:49 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
Hmmmm then I guess the same thing should be done to the other three Municipalities right? ("municipality" is a hard word to spell =P) Lorenzarius 15:53 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
In the case of the other municipalities, is the territory covered different from the one covered by the city? olivier 17:02 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
Another possibility... What about merging the Municipality article and the City article into one? I think most people won't be able to distinguish between the two, but I may be wrong... Lorenzarius 16:06 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
That is an option. We could actually write 2 articles into one, in this case. But what would we do with the "Provinces" template? olivier 17:02 Jan 20, 2003 (UTC)
Does municipality articel much differ than the city one? IMO Merge them if they are same and explain the small differences in the article. Before they are done, just left them as it is for now. User:Kt2
I think that in the case of Chongqing, the city is quite different from the municipality (which is basically the size of a regular province). I am not sure about the other ones. olivier 07:24 Jan 26, 2003 (UTC)

provincial maps

[edit]

Query: Is there anyway of making the Chinese provincial maps more "neutral" when it comes the to status of Taiwan. I don't want to get into a flame war about this, but I suspect that there is a way of doing the colors so that it doesn't take a position as far as the sovereignty of Taiwan.

Note: I do *not* want to get into a flame war about this, but I have seen very clever color schemes (especially from maps from Taiwan) that skirt the issue.

Roadrunner

My suggested answer to the question would be to simply add the island of Taiwan as an additional province on the map. My understanding is that most people in the PRC and in the ROC agree on the fact that china = mainland + island of taiwan. The debate tends to center around "who should rule this entity" rather than "what is the entity". olivier 13:04 Mar 19, 2003 (UTC)
I would suggest that the problem does indeed go further than 'who should rule this entity', and is more centered around 'if Taiwan and China should be seen as being part of the same entity'. This is in no way a provocation or show of stances in either way, but rather just a suggestion that there perhaps indeed needs to be more recognition and discussion as to how this issue should be handled. User:jwcchen 18:01 Jun 18, 2006
As my map source did not include the Sichuan and Chongqing Municipality split I have to correct the maps anyway, so I just uploaded a new version of the Sichuan map which now also includes Taiwan in a light color (not sure if it's notable enough). If that's acceptable I will upload corrected versions of the other maps next days. andy 22:47 Mar 19, 2003 (UTC)

Quick Navigation Box

[edit]

Currently there's a quick navigation box at the bottom of every province article -- except that the box contains only provinces -- no AR's, municipalities, or SAR's. The municipalities have their own box that links only to the other municipalities (no provinces and AR's), the AR's have no box at all, and the three provinces of the Northeast/Manchuria have a special "Manchurian provinces" box that links only to the other two provinces of Manchuria.

This is, to say the least, hugely counter-intuitive.

Perhaps we should have a single box that appears at the bottom of every province, AR, or municipality?

Questions + Translations

[edit]

Hi everyone. I'd like to join this wikiproject.. ^^. I have, in front of me, a copy of 中国地图册 by 中国地图出版社. And since translations are considered original work, i was wondering if it was worth the effor to translate the entire atlas...province by province ofcourse

Precisely, it's 中国地图册(塑套本), 中国地图出版社编制出版. 1993年9月第8版河北第32次印刷。 It has the maps (which i'm only going to read) followed by detailed descriptions in the format of

  • Overview- includes ethnicities
  • Geography- VERY detailed
  • Climate- ditto with geo
  • Rivers & Lakes-ditto
  • Agriculture-IF translated, part of Economy section?
  • Industry- same as Agriculture
  • Transporation- outdated, not going to bother
  • Important Cities- good for overview?

So, should i go ahead and translate the useful sections and incorporate into the province articles? an example should be up soon on my userpage.
Thoughts? comments?

Project directory

[edit]

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 15:10, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Day Awards

[edit]

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:26, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Chinese provinces

[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Cantonese wikiproject?

[edit]

Is there a WP:Canton or Cantonese WikiProject? (dealing with the people, province, diaspora, etc) 09:33, 2 October 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.51.8.75 (talk)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 08:57, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:07, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese provinces articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Chinese provinces articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Chinese provinces

[edit]

May I ask why the Chinese provinces are given as Fujian, Hainan, Guangdong, and so on, and not Fujian Province, Hainan Province, &c? It seems that, in common English speech, one always refers to them with "province". RGloucester 20:47, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the guidelines at WP:NC the article name should have both Precision – lack of ambiguity, and be concise – no longer than required. Since there is no other thing called 'Fujian' or 'Guangdong', there is no ambiguity, and thus the word province would be superfluous and lack conciseness. Rincewind42 (talk) 06:11, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning up Chinese script on province articles

[edit]

There is an excessive amount of Chinese script and transliterations on all Chinese province articles. Also much of it is repetitive. For example, look at Guangdong. The lead sentence contains traditional and simplified Chinese script, Pinyin and Jyutping transliteration. Then the template:Infobox PRC province repeats all that traditional and simplified Chinese script, Pinyin and Jyutping transliteration plus Yale Cantonese, Hakka Pinyim and Teochew Png'im. Then we have the template:Chinese infobox which again repeats traditional and simplified Chinese script, pinyin and Jyutping transliteration, Yale Cantonese, Hakka Pinyim and Teochew Png'im but adds Wade-Giles, Cantonese IPA, Mandarin IPA, Taiwanese POJ, Wu, Min Dong BUC and Chinese postal map romanizations. Basically it is a repetitive mess that needs fixed.

If you look at WP:MOS-ZH is says that where complex transliterations are to be included, they should go into the infobox and not into the lead sentence. Therefore I plan to clean the scripts and transliterations out of the lead sentences. This will be in line with the city articles such as Beijing and Shanghai.

A complication arises with province articles in that there are two infoboxes designed to take Chinese script. We don't really need both. It is my opinion that the Chinese script and transliterations is best kept within the template:Chinese. This template infobox is specialised for this task and it is consistent in style and format with other Chinese related articles. Putting all that info into the template:Infobox PRC province gives the transliterations too much weight high in the article. Instead lets just have the English name and the Chinese simplified script at the top, similar to the city or people infoboxes. The other scripts and transliterations can be stripped for the template:Infobox PRC province and put only in [template:Chinese]].

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you?
