List of all prefecture-level divisions?

I was doing some reading about political divisions of the PRC, and was wondering, is there a list available of all prefecture-level divisions? All province-level divisions are listed on Political divisions of China, but I haven't found one with the prefecture-level divisions yet, and think one might be useful. Granted, a list of all would be rather long and arguably cumbersome, but it could be done similarly to List of counties of the United States, which is divided up by state (i.e., this one would be divided by province-level entity). Indeed, a lot of the legwork would already be done in this case, since we already have articles listing all prefecture-level divisions (along with county-level divisions) for each province. All we'd really need would be a short article, like the US-related one I've linked to, that provides a link to all the [[List of administrative divisions of NAME]], thus providing a centralised point from which one can find them all. There's already a list of prefecture-level cities for each province and autonomous region. For example: List of administrative divisions of Anhui and List of administrative divisions of Guangxi. They are all linked from Political divisions of China. But there might be value in a list that only links to lists of prefecture-level divisions. I see now that all the prefecture-level-by-province articles are listed at Political divisions of China; I had missed that before. OK, here's where I am now: I think List of prefecture-level divisions of China should go somewhere: either as an list itself, or as a redirect. Does this make sense? If so, I see at least three possibilities:

1. A completely new list, listing only the prefecture-level divisions. Cons: It duplicates material found on the articles. Pros: It provides all info on prefecture-level divisions only in one place.

2. A short article similar to List of counties of the United States, which just provides links to the [[List of administrative divisions of NAME]] lists. Pros: less duplication of information. Cons: doesn't provide a place if you only want to find prefecture-level info without county-level info.

3. A redirect to the section of Political divisions of China that provides the links to the [[List of administrative divisions of NAME]] articles. I don't like this solution as much because I don't think it's user-friendly; as someone looking for the prefecture-level divisions of China gets plopped down in the middle of an article in a section titled "provinces".

Category:Chinese chess players

This category name is highly confusing, since Chinese chess is the common English name for a different board game, and one would naturally expect it to be filled with players of Chinese chess. Any suggestions on renaming it? 70.51.9.174 (talk) 07:47, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Mongolian barbecue is Taiwanese, correct?

I looked at the Wikipedia article for Mongolian barbecue and it says it is Taiwanese.

I found some sources which apparently verify this, but I want to make sure. Are there any sources in Chinese that describe Mongolian barbecue as Taiwanese? WhisperToMe (talk) 21:30, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I think the "Western" Mongolian barbecue is the one found in Taiwan. There are articles about actual barbecues from Mongolia. That is covered at Regional_variations_of_barbecue#Mongolian. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:30, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

I had a look on the Mongolian barbecue page. The sources saying that it's from Taiwan would ideally need to be backed up by a cite from someone familiar with Mongolian culture. Statements about so-and-so originating from here or there often tend to reflect a narrow cultural view. I know, but I wonder how in tune with Mongolian culture is Erik Reinert given he is writing about globalisation - the possibility in my mind is that Reinert heard about the "true" Mongolian barbecue from a Mongolian friend (I don't see academic citations about these claims), but the "mock Mongolian barbecue" could be found in other parts of Mongolia. Mongolia, afterall, is a fairly big country with a multitude of clans. Chinese Wikitravel launched

Apologies for the somewhat offtopic posting, but I can't think of a better place to find people fluent in English, Chinese and Mediawiki. So:

Wikitravel (disclaimer: not a Wikimedia project) has just launched its Chinese version, and I'd really appreciate it if somebody could take a look around and confirm that it's working the way it should. It's been in the works for ages, but finding a "go-between" to liaise between Chinese speakers and the admins has been a real headache. AFAIK, the interface looks broadly OK and the zh-cn/tw/sg/hk switching is working, but my Chinese is rudimentary and there may well be other problems that I'm unaware of. Cultural heritage list

The State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China has a list of 2,351 cultural heritage relics. This list would be similar to a list of national historical sites and so forth in other countries, and should probably have an article here. You can read something about it in the People's Daily (English version); most sources are in Chinese. The list is on the Chinese WP at zh:全国重点文物保护单位; I'd like to bring it here but I'm not sure what it's called in English (the article doesn't name the list). Nanjing, Four Great Inventions of ancient China

Someone keeps adding irrelevant information about the Nanking Massacre into the Nanjing article, and he's jumping from one IP to another to do it. The same person is also removing sourced passages from the Four Great Inventions of ancient China article and adding his own patriotic analysis. irrelevant? are you a history ignorant? most people know about holocaust, how many of them know about nanjing massacre? it happened in nanjing in 1937! So adding that information in that article is very relevant! Well, at least 1.3 billion people know about the Nanking massacre. The massacre is very important to Nanjing, yes. But the information you added, like "Films and books about the Nanking massacre", is not important to Nanjing. And you're missing the point about the 4 great inventions of China, it's true that Needham wasn't even born when the four inventions were invented. But until Needham's Science and Civilisation in China series no one in China collected these four inventions and advertised them as the "Four Great Inventions of ancient China". The inventions, of course, did exist way before Needham, but the term "Four Great Inventions of ancient China" didn't. Maps

Does anybody know how the China maps were created? To be honest, I find them rather ugly. In my opinion, they could do with being updated to .svg, as they are very "pixely" in the current versions. Mongolian script - .svg images or unicode?

Hi, we over at the Mongolia Work Group thought it might be a good idea to replace most of the Mongol script in WP with .svg images of the script (or actually, I thought, one other contributer gave some indication of approval, noone objected). The reason is that as of now, there seems to be little support for Mongolian script on non-Vista computers, and so the script ends up badly distorted on many systems, or is not displayed at all. Since this would affect some places in the PRC, it would be nice to know beforehand if anybody thinks this is a bad idea, and why. Regards, Yaan (talk) 10:47, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Requesting input on the "History of Manchuria (Northeast China) and Russian Far East" template

Apparently, there has been a longstanding dispute on this matter and there were several referrals to the template page on a few articles on Northeast China.

The use of "Manchuria" has never been recorded in primary Qing-era historical documents and the use of this term in modern media has subsided considerably (if not completely) over the years, with "Northeast China" (a term dating back to the Qing Dynasty) taking precedence. I am opposed to messing with it. The entire {{History of Manchuria}} template was created as a compromise, and messing with it will upset the compromise. It's not ideal, for sure, but I think it prevents more problems than it creates. --Nlu (talk) 05:41, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Translation needed

I am trying to improve upon the section of Zhou Tong (archer) that describes his fictional youth (as portrayed in a comic book). I was recently shown a Chinese page that does a much better job of summarizing his young life than what I currently have. Could someone please translate the following for me?

周侗，陕西人，少年习武，后拜少林派武师谭正芳为师，得少林武术真传，且文武全才。成年后得到当时地位显赫的包拯赏识，进入军中为军官，后担任京师御拳馆教师。御拳馆有天地人三席，周侗为“天”字教师，地位最尊，和朝中名将宗泽交好，谭正芳最小的徒弟，后来梁山好汉病尉迟孙立就是得周侗引荐给宗泽，担任了登州兵马都监。他还有一个师弟，就是祝家庄的武术教师栾廷玉，后来孙立就是利用了这层关系打入祝家庄内部。因为在朝政上主张抗辽抗金，周侗政治上不得意，因此专心武学，确立了官派正规武术的若干套路，如五步十三枪戳脚，发展自少林的翻子拳，以及周侗棍等。他悉心传授武功，在御拳馆期间正式收徒二人，一个是玉麒麟卢俊义，一个是豹子头林冲，卢俊义广有田产，不作官，林冲则继承了周侗的地位，继续担任宋军中的八十万禁军教头。

期间周侗还有一个记名徒弟，就是武松。武松打虎后，县令孙国卿为了巴结权贵，派武松送虎骨膏到京师给高官，武松滞留京师，结识周侗。周认为武松力大，但是拳术上缺少修为，因此加以指点，可惜二人交往时间太短，仅两个月武松就拜别周侗回乡，此后再未得相见。武松在拳术武术上的不足，在此后多次暴露，比如斗杀西门庆，拳打蒋门神，都曾经吃过亏。但是他跟随周侗入御拳馆游历，大长见识，因此西门庆在狮子楼摆出金猫捕鼠的凶险步子，武松虽然不知破法，却识得厉害。同时，周侗传授武松的鸳鸯腿，也是武松的杀手锏。这一手奇特的武功被武松传授给了好友金眼彪施恩，也成了施恩的看家功夫。周侗年老后辞官，在刘光世幕府做过一段幕宾，刘光世军驻河南，因此得以在汤阴县收岳飞为徒。传说岳飞受周侗翻子拳真传，并加以发展，开创鹰爪翻子门。

I do accept that many of the article he adds {{WPCHINA}} to do have a link (however tenuous) to China. I definitely agree. Is he part of your wikiproject? If he is, maybe you can talk to him, because he does not respond to anybody else's complaints.

I've been following Aomen for a while too. The nature and speed of his edits make me suspect a bot account as well. I guess we'll have to block him, but I must say, he has gotten a lot of articles tagged for WPCHINA. I think I was the only one who wasn't negative to this guy on his talk page Lol, and to be honest if I did what he is doing just tagging like that I would've become suicidal long ago.

My explanation is that he is tagging WPCHINA to those within a China-related category. So for example, from the above list:

• Actinidia laevissima is under Category:Flora of China
• Trimeresurus stejnegeri is under Category:Reptiles of China.

Actually, can anyone explain what should be tagged WPCHINA? Could also technically everything under Category:China be tagged. Because maybe this is what this guy is doing.

If that is indeed the case, then I think his contribs should be encouraged. Looking at his edits they seem pretty non-objectionable (IMHO tagging species endemic to China should be within our scope). Yangzhou dialect

Is there an article or section of an article that briefly describes the brand of dialect commonly used in Yangzhou? Update. I think I may have found what I was looking for. Here is the paragraph that I will be adding to the article. Please keep in mind that alot of the terminology, like "square mouth" is already defined in a previous paragraph. Tell me what you think ...

In her studies of Yangzhou storytelling, folkore researcher Vibeke Børdahl noted that a tale about Zhou and his student Wu Song used different forms of dialogue for both characters. Wu Song speaks in square mouth fashion and uses the standard mandarin of northern China, but without short rusheng sylables. Zhou also speaks in squaremouth, but uses the Yangzhou tone system of southern China and rusheng. Therefore, she believes “square mouth dialogue should at least be divided into two subcategories, namely the Wu Song variant—without rusheng, and the Zhou Tong variant—with rusheng.”

If this person really is making meaningful changes, I suggest someone from WPCHINA ask him where he is getting these new info. Some dates were changed by as much as 1000 years. No, elderly martial arts masters have appeared in Chinese novels since the Ming or even before. But I just now added Zhou Botong and Emperor Xuangong per your suggestion (I thought I already added Zhou for some reason). OK, I have looked over some of the articles (though not all yet), and I can give opinions on three of them:

• Sima Zhen - article on a famous historian and commentator of the Shiji. I found him referenced in a number of sources, a couple of which I added to the article. I think this one is worthy of keeping.
• Zuo Shu Zhang - I couldn't find any English sources on this, so I looked on the Chinese Wikipedia. It seems to be a relatively minor position in the imperial bureacracy. Maybe worthy of a mention in a larger article, but I'm not sure that it needs its own.
• Chinese Holy Grail - There is already a discussion occurring about this article, which seems to be trending toward a content merge followed by deletion of this article. If nothing else, it definitely needs to be renamed.

Renaming Terracotta Army article

I've started a bit of work on this article and think that it needs to be broader in scope and renamed. At the moment, for instance, Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperorredirects to it although it doesn't mention the Mausoleum, or any of the other 594 pits that have been found. The Lishan Necropolis or Great Imperial Mausoleum complex or whatever is one entity and should I think have its own article. I guess it has the potential to be big enough to have a separate article Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to talk about the Terracotta Army in isolation, or the tomb itself without talking about the other buildings, artefacts, the artificial river with the bronze birds, etc. It was suggested that I take the discussion here, so I'm doing that. There are academic debates about the precise relations between the Terracotta Warriors and the Mausoleum. Theories include that it was actually an army to guard the tomb of one of the First Emperor's ancestors. Supporting evidence include its strange position relative to the tomb, relative distance (much closer to several other Qin royal tombs), and the lack of mentions of the terracotta warriors in historical records.

My view is that there should probably be two separate articles, and the terracotta warriors can be a daughter article of the main article on the tomb complex. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 01:26, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

I know there is an argument that it was the First Emperor's great grandmother the army was for,but so far as I can seeit isn't one involving very many people on the non-First Emperor side -- I can only find one person, the architect Chen Jingyuan, who is arguing this position -- do any archaeologists support him? I don't understand how the lack of mention by Sima Quian (or anyone else) can be used to argue for an ancestor, lack of mention is just lack of mention. True, it is 1.5 km away from the First Emperor's tomb, but who else had the resources for such a huge project? There was evidently a Ge" (sword) with the inscription "Lu Buwei" found with the army, which points towards the First Emperor. There is simply not enough substance to this argument to merit it being used as a reason for the Terracotta Army to be treated separately from all the other finds outside the mauseoleum itself (let alone in an article separate from the mausoleum). As one book I have says, "The physical mapping of the all required aspects of an eternal imperial life across a large area was one of the principle ways in which the tomb complex created a whole world." If you look at a map of the complex, the bronze birds along an artifical river and the terracotta musicians pit are about the same distance away. The archaeologists agree that this is one large tomb complex. The army is part of it, defending the whole complex not just the tomb and facing towards the mountain pass where enemies from the former states might have come from.--Doug Weller (talk) 08:32, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Whether Chinese sources can be used on Wikipedia

In a discussion at Talk:Amdo, User:Blnguyen, who is an experienced Wikipedian, says that no source published China can ever be reliable due to the Chinese government's policies on press freedom (I paraphrase. You can see what he wrote youself).

You're kidding me right? If anything, mainland China's news sources serve as important sources for the official stance of the Chinese government on controversial issues. I agree they're going to be bias, but as with anything, this is why we should avoid presenting information as simple facts when it comes to controversial issues. That's why it's important we attribute, and state specifically in articles if any specific pieces of information comes from a Chinese source. The two articles Foshan Hotel and Sunshine Hotel, Shenzhen are both weak, but perhaps they could be improved with information from Chinese-language sources. Similarly, the articles Beijing Hotel and White Swan Hotel could be improved with information from Chinese-language sources. Perhaps the hotels have won awards for their architecture or for other reasons. A rabid deletionist put this image up for deletion today "no rationale." Since the original uploader hasn't edited for two years, I put the rationale in myself, being a good sport. Within an hour this same rabid deletionist again tagged this for deletion, under "non-free use rationale is disputed."
