Just umbeliveable
I recently moved to mobile just a month ago, and I find it hard to believe that something like this could happen in this day and age. I was just watching a program on the history channel and my aunt told me that this happen and I just looked at her in disbelief that the klan was still able to do this to a black man in this day and time. That was just over twenty years ago. I am going to see where this unbelieveable act happened. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.63.13.158 (talk) 05:29, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Spam
We may have a spammer adding http://bamatrails.com/ to Alabama-related articles. It may be unintentional spamming, but it has been added to dozens of articles. I've identified a couple of anonymous accounts (143.158.254.228 and 143.158.254.227), but there may be more. These accounts have been adding it to the external links section and embedding it in the text over the last few days. Altairisfartalk 19:14, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Both IPs belong to Gunter AFB. I've contacted Tim Moore (the abuse contact) once before, when IPs registered to Tinker AFB were causing mass disruption. I wouldn't go so far as to contact him about this, but if revert/discuss/block doesn't work out, it's always an option. Looking at 143.158.254.228/16, those appear to be the only two IPs from the Gunter range that have been spamming that link. - auburnpilot talk 19:34, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

C.A.P.S. in Homewood entry
Could someone please look at the Homewood, Alabama entry and tell me if they've ever heard of the Central Alabama Paranormal Society? The whole "Paranormal Investigators" section has been added since Jan 27. Looks like spam to me, but I wanted to be sure. --Lkseitz (talk) 21:26, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group
Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.
All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 04:39, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Alabama articles missing geocoordinate data
An FYI for members, The Anomebot2 has been at it again, so we currently have 130+ articles in Category:Alabama articles missing geocoordinate data. Altairisfartalk 23:39, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.
If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none
parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Deletion of articles
Several Alabama-related articles are under the gun by a deletionist: Historical Panorama of Alabama Agriculture and P. O. Davis have been nominated for deletion after a speedy delete was declined. Additionally Luther Duncan was nominated for speedy and declined, so the user placed multiple tags instead. Ralph R. Jones, W. H. Taylor, and Fred R. Robertson have already been deleted through speedy. All of the articles were created by a user who was blocked on March 5, 2009 for having a conflict of interest (the articles were created in 2007, however). The articles were all sourced and fairly well written, and seem to be notable enough for inclusion. Altairisfartalk 15:40, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- Okay another one just got added to AfD, though it's not by the same author: Alabama Council for Technology in Education. Also, John Augustus Walker has had some additional drive-by tagging. Altairisfartalk 16:10, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- First off, there was no drive by tagging. The tagging was fully appropriate to indicate the many issues caused by that person running through making a bunch of promotional articles. If you don't like it, then FIX the issues instead of just removing the tags claiming that their being blocked fixed the issue. It didn't. The edits are removed by the block and since they created the articles, they can't just be reverted to old versions. And I'd also recommend you refresh yourself on WP:AGF and WP:NPOV. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 14:01, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Point taken. But adding multiple tags (in the case of Luther Duncan a total of six) to an article without at least a short note on the talk page is drive by tagging. Altairisfartalk 14:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- A short note is not required, particularly when attention to the issue has a whole was already there and no one else has bothered doing anything with any of these articles until they started getting deleted and attention was called to their being promotional stuff. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 14:35, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Not required, but it would demonstrate good faith on your part. There is a reason that tags state "Please see the discussion on the talk page." Altairisfartalk 14:55, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- a note is not required to demonstrate good faith on my part either. The attention was appropriately brought to far broader attention than just the article talk page, which is quite sufficient notification. And, frankly, if someone can't look at that article and clearly see the COI issues, that isn't something a note will fix. Its blatantly obvious those articles were written by a PR person, and I strongly suspect were primarily copy/pasted from existing publication from the Alabama Extension service, with references tacked on after my initial efforts to correct the PR. Its interesting to me how now all of these articles are somehow super important, when not a single person from this project cared in the year they were being created and only barely during the deletion discussion. Why is it now, when its tagged, that its somehow a huge deal. I'd think the project would be far more concerned about fixing the problems caused by this editor than worrying over whether a note was left with the tag for very clear issues. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 15:12, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

- I've moved the three deleted articles into our project space so that they can be improved by WP:ALA as needed and moved back into article space when/if they meet requirements: Wikipedia:WikiProject Alabama/Ralph R. Jones, Wikipedia:WikiProject Alabama/W. H. Taylor, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Alabama/Fred R. Robertson. --auburnpilot talk 14:36, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- If I could step in, the notion that these articles were "promotional" is a half-truth. Clearly the intent was to contribute factual information, with no evidence of any expectation of commercial benefit. --Dystopos (talk) 15:23, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Commercial benefit is not required to be "promotional". Also ACES fully admitted that they were a PR person for Alabama Extension who had been specifically tasked with creating and maintaining "their" articles to ensure Extension was represented in a positive fashion. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 15:27, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- The fact remains that despite the admitted conflicts of interest, the articles are informative, factual and well-documented. Wikipedia has numerous mechanisms to deal with non-neutral content short of proposing deletion. I understand it's frustrating that the process is slow compared to the frenzy kicked up by an AfD, but since we don't have a hierarchy of editing privileges here, one can only take responsibility for one's own actions. If you choose to spend your time improving the articles and run into trouble, let us know and we'll help get things sorted out. If, instead, you choose to spend your time telling other people what they should do, don't expect a whole lot of satisfaction. --Dystopos (talk) 23:46, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Unnotable topics are still unnotable topics, no matter how well-written, factual, nor informative. I AfDed or CSDed those I felt did not meet WP:N as they had no significant coverage outside of Alabama Extension service's own publications (and still don't), and tagged the rest appropriately for the issues received. As noted in the AfDs, sourcing an entire article to your own writings is NOT well-documented at all. Its basically self-publishing your own stuff and does not show notability nor prove any factuality. I don't have time to fix the overall mess the remaining articles are in, which in my opinion need to be stripped and restarted from scratch if the topics truly are notable. Nor is it my responsibility to do so. I notified those who are actually interested in the topics of the issues with the appropriate tags. Instead of choosing to spend your time bashing me for tagging bad articles, why not just go fix the issues as, presumably you actually are interested in editing such articles and actually feel they are notable. If this project doesn't have time to fix the issues, that's fine, but just randomly removing the tags just because someone feels like it is also not helpful. Leave the tags for the next editor who comes along and actually does want to edit them so they know a good place to start, and so that readers will know these are not neutral articles but the writings of someone with a vested interest in having it sound as good as possible for the subjects. -- AnmaFinotera (talk · contribs) 01:13, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- We have differing philosophies of how to collaborate. Let's agree to stop arguing and move on. --Dystopos (talk) 04:12, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
I just took a look at the articles that have been moved to project space, and A7 was not appropriate for any of them. They all at least assert claims of notability. They could have been taken to AfD, or even prodded, but they should not have been speedy-deleted. Aleta Sing 02:52, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Vestavia Hills Map
The map displayed in the Vestavia Hills' article is not accurate. It does not reflect the annexation of Cahaba Heights which occurred 7 years ago. Can anyone edit the current one or provide a more accurate map? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.167.90.206 (talk) 16:38, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- I've visited this subject once before, with the Mobile map. Mobile has annexed several areas that aren't reflected in its map. This is the case with any city that has expanded its borders since 2000. Arkyan, now known as Shereth, created the city maps using the 2000 U.S. Census data. My understanding of it is that they can't be updated (at least these maps can't be) until the 2010 U.S. Census data is released. Altairisfartalk 20:52, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Letter to a Birmingham Jail
I would like to see this article expanded. I would be interested to know the effect of King's letter. Was it effective in convincing ministers, church members, etc, that he was not being impatient and that his cause was just? Obviously today we agree with King, but I wonder how well it worked then. I did appreciate that the article lists where the letter was published because I had wondered how widely disseminated it was. I also think that if this article linked to an article discussing the nature and overall results of the Birmingham demonstrations, that would be worthwhile. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.143.220.254 (talk) 21:05, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

I created a Portal for Alabama at Portal:Alabama. It still needs a bit of work to get it running smoothly, but the basic structure is there and many of the fields have articles on rotation. It's based on Portal:Florida, a featured portal, but a few of the boxes they use will likely have to be adapted for Alabama (ex, we don't have very many panoramas). Anyway, it's up and I'll do a little more work on it later tonight/tomorrow morning. --auburnpilot talk 01:44, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- OK. The portal is basically done, and now it can be updated and added to as we desire. Adding articles, biographies, pictures, and panoramas is fairly easy as they're merely subpages transcluded onto the main portal page. I've only been able to view it on my screen, so please let me know if the formatting looks odd for anybody. --auburnpilot talk 01:15, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
- It looks pretty awesome to me, I for one appreciate the work that you've put into it. Altairisfartalk 04:25, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation
This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.
We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.
If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Talk:University of Atlanta -- input requested
This article has been the subject of many discussions (WP:ANI, WP:AFD, etc.) A predecessor school in Mobile, Barrington University, was unaccredited and involved in multiple scandals. In 2004, it was sold to new owners. In 2008, Barrington was renamed and received DETC accreditation. Later, it was moved to Atlanta.
Presently, there's a disagreement at Talk:University of Atlanta as to whether Barrington's history should be included in the University of Atlanta article. This content issue has been clouded by issues of alleged spamming, sockpuppetry and legal threats by University of Atlanta employees and/or partisans.
It would be helpful if we had a few more neutral editors looking this over and adding their thoughtful comments on the talk page. Note that doing this right probably means about 30 minutes reading the cited references and the full discussion on the article talk page.

Request for any editor in the Auburn area
There's a slight content dispute over WTLM and whether they're still playing a sports talk format or have reverted to the Timeless-branded adult classics/nostalgia music format. Could any editor in radio range of Auburn please flip over to 1520 and let me know what the deal is? Thanks. - Dravecky (talk) 19:07, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Quantum's website lists the format as "the softer side of more than three decades of great music that you won’t find anywhere else" however the site was last updated in 2007. I do have first hand knowledge however I imagine that John Bodiford the station Marketing Manager (Phone: 334-745-4656 Ext 302) would be glad to give you some information. Template:Alabama-geo-stub
Recently the image for Template:Alabama-geo-stub was changed from Image:Flag of Alabama.svg to Image:Flag-map of Alabama.svg. I didn't like the new image, it looks strange to me. At the selected resolution you really can't even see the outline of Alabama, only the cropped flag of Alabama. So... I have changed it back. Thoughts?

Old legends may be true Desoto caverns or Kylmulga cave
A group of fellow spelunkers were hired by Mr Mathis to explore an area of the cave that now is no longer on the actual tour named " Lovers leap " it is a drop of over 200 feet below the actual manin chamber. There were rumors from this group that there was in fact a larger room than the main show room, and that there were passageways that did go further North backing up the old legend that the cave use to come out in Talladega somewhere. All guys on this trip made a pact to not reveal what all they found in fear of it being over constructed for tourists. Where this site is still remains unknown. In the article written about the cave here on Wiki it states the cavern ends at a small pool of water. I can vouch from my own from the times i have been in the cave that it does not end here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.192.121.254 (talk) 21:21, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
I am posting this here because there hasn't been talk page activity at Talk:List of people from Alabama for more than two years. While watching recent changes I reverted this edit. While the edit was misplaced commentary IMHO, the user does make a point. If one lives in Alabama are they from Alabama? I honestly do not know the answer. Has there been any discussion on this point within the project? I'm not a fan of "List of" articles in general, but if we're going to have them there should be some consistant treatment. If this subject has been discussed and there exits a consensus, please forgive my post. I'm asking so that I know how to proceed in the future. Thanks Tiderolls 03:07, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I think the question is more general than you ask. We have articles of people categorized as being "from" lots of places because they lived in those places for some period of time. I think this needs to be an encyclopedia-wide discussion. Whether that discussion has already happened at sometime, I don't know. It's more than just "from Alabama" though. LadyofShalott 03:22, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- Good point. I'll look into the project wide aspect. Probably biting off more than I can chew but I won't know 'till I try. Thanks Tiderolls 03:29, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

After a couple of hours of reading last night I barely scratched the surface of the discussions touching on this subject. Even though I plan to continue, my first impression is that reaching an "absolute" conclusion would be an unreasonable expectation. There seems to be a quite dynamic aspect to lists in that almost anything goes. To be sure, policies and guidelines are not ignored but interpretations are varied and unpredictable. I probably will not bother you fine folks with any further posts on this subject...unless I uncover some discussion that explicitly addresses the issue at hand. Regards Tiderolls 16:26, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- For this particular case, note that the top of the page says, "Listing of famous people born in, or famous for their association with, Alabama" (bolding mine to emphazise relevant portion). LadyofShalott 16:52, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
- For the sake of discussion, I would argue that Paul Bryant, though born in Arkansas, is certainly most famous as an Alabamian. Nick Saban, on the other hand, probably is not (at least not yet). --Dystopos (talk) 00:58, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Pageview stats
After a recent request, I added WikiProject Alabama to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Alabama/Popular pages.
The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 01:57, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Hey guys, I had to stub Bradley Byrne after discovering that nearly every revision after it was started in November was a cut-and-paste copyvio. Figured you could help rebuild it--thanks. Blueboy96 17:17, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
This list is largely complete, but has bits and pieces of information missing, and needs some images filled in - any help in completing it would be much appreciated. Cheers! bd2412 T 19:36, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'll go take an image for the current courthouse in Mobile. Also, I know that I can come up with enough info for the old one in Mobile too, after the holidays are over. Altairisfar 20:11, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- I've got some of Huntsville's that I'll upload once I find my camera cable. --Spyder_Monkey (Talk) 21:09, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
Yesterday I spent several hours populating a new category for inductees into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, using the precedent of the Category:Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and others. My work was speedily deleted by a robot acting on a precedent from last February where the same category was deleted with very little discussion. The original nominator makes reference to a guideline, Wikipedia:OCAT#Award recipients, which seems to contradict a great deal of consensus practice by Wikipedia editors. Certainly I believed the work I was doing was valuable to the project. I'm trying to get the latest deletion reversed long enough to re-open discussion. See Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2010 May 23#Category:Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. --Dystopos (talk) 17:05, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- PS: Clearly Alabama Sports Hall of Fame needs some work itself. I was expecting to jump on it today, but once again I've lost heart. --Dystopos (talk) 17:05, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Mobile County Public School System
Is anyone in the city of Mobile? If so, Mobile County Public School System needs photos of its schools. I want to add the official MCPSS langauge translations of its own name to the MCPSS commons category once it is opened. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:24, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

We need one photograph and three street addresses.
List of United States federal courthouses in Alabama is complete except for one photograph and date of first use (for the Seybourn H. Lynne U.S. Courthouse & Post Office in Decatur), and three street addresses for former courthouses. bd2412 T 16:54, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
I think the Customs House in Mobile was on the site of the current GM Building (Mobile). That address is 107 St. Francis St. SW corner of Royal St. and St. Francis St. Rlm0710 (talk) 14:30, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
- The dates match up. Thanks! bd2412 T 15:54, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I got a photo of Decatur (and other historic sites in Huntsville and Decatur), and an address for Montgomery (from here). --Spyder_Monkey (Talk) 02:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Luke Pryor Entry
The 1860 slave schedule on ancestry.com lists Luke Pryor as owning 24 slaves, not two as stated in the article. Author might want to double-check that figure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.204.181.186 (talk) 19:17, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Photo request: Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Wetumpka
For those of you near Wetumpka, Alabama, who wants to photograph the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women? Just get the front entrance, which is located along the state highway. This copyrighted picture shows what to take along the front entrance - You may not be able to park at the facility, so you may have to have a friend behind the wheel while you photograph the prison from a moving automobile. This Google maps view shows a suggested point of photography of the facility. You can also see where the entrance that needs to be photographed is exactly located. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:55, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- Yargh! I was just in Wetumpka on Saturday. I'll pop up there again soon. Does anyone know where the old Tutwiler prison is? It's listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. --Spyder_Monkey (Talk) 02:15, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, Spyder. BTW, I'm not sure where the old Tutwiler is. I'll see if I can consult Google Maps. I know the old facility is in Wetumpka, near the current Tutwiler prison. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:58, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Alabama articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Alabama articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Monte Sano Mountain's Name Origin
Monte Sano Mountain's Name Origin: The Alabama Registry of Historical Places states that the name,"Monte Sano", is a Spanish term (not Italian, as this article states). Also, the Registry documents the use of the mountain as a place of healing and recovery for malaria-stricken soldiers upon their return from the Spanish-American War; hence the use of a Spanish, rather than English or Native American, nomenclature. The Defense of Decatur, Alabama, US Civil War, 26-29 October 1864
To whom it may concern:
The O.R.(standing for Official Record, usually abbreviated OR) catalogs every surviving written order, report (including returns), dispatch, or telegram sent by Union or Confederate military or War Department officials, including Presidents Lincoln and Davis).
The OR contains multiple Union accounts of the actions that comprise the defense of the town against Walthall's (reinforced) division of A.P. Stewart's Corps of Hood's Army of Tennessee, then followed in the ensuing four days by enough of that army to build two miles of entrenchments, including artillery positions, facing the Union mile-long perimeter. At least one CS account survives in the OR as well. A later description of the action, written in 1888 by Union Colonel [later Brigadier- General USV and Brevet Major-General USV] Charles C. Doolittle, commander of the Union garrison during the critical opening hours of the conflict, also places the defense in the context of the Nashville Campaign. Doolittle researched the OR, listened to a living CS artillery officer who fought at Decatur, and used other written sources available at the time.
Hood's accounts in his OR reports, and in his memoir: "Advance and Retreat," refer to the defense of Decatur as being only against "A slight demonstration" by his army. Since the US and CS accounts conflict, at least those known to survive (as does Hood's with the surviving CS source in the OR) more questions might lead to more interesting answers, and to more questions...
May I add information from the OR, and from other primary sources, to this and other articles on the US Civil War?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely, Steve Pisani spisani@runbox.com (510)262-0370 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.164.146.16 (talk) 22:40, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
