The Africa Destubathon

Due to several problems with the grant proposal for Northern Africa we're likely going to do those regional contests starting in the new year now and do a general Africa one to get started here. I've created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. The idea will be whoever fleshes out the most stubs for each country wins a prize, and then a bonus prize for the person who expands the most women biographical articles from Africa during the month. If interested sign up on the page in the contestants/participants section but I understand if you don't want to put your name down until it is formally approved! This has already received some positive feedback from people associated with the grants though so has a good chance of going ahead this time ;-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:21, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Proposal

OK I think a general contest which benefits everybody would be the best place to start. For Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon I'm proposing the following:

• $1060 for 53 sets of $20 prizes for the people who do the most destubs for each African country.
• $300 into whoever destubs the most articles for the whole of Africa during the contest, with $200 for first place, $50 for second, $25 for third, $15 for fourth, and $10 for fifth.
• $300 into whoever destubs the most geography and wildlife articles for the whole of Africa during the contest, with $200 for first place, $50 for second, $25 for third, $15 for fourth, and $10 for fifth. Wikimedia UK will hopefully put up this prize.
• $200 into whoever destubs the most women articles for the whole of Africa during the contest, with $100 for first place, $50 for second, $25 for third, $15 for fourth, and $10 for fifth. Optionally, a request for books can be put in and we work something out where contestants can claim for books about women they want to further benefit wiki and the Wiki loves women contests at a later date.

I know Dthomsen8 has mentioned that he would be willing to put something into a contest too but that's entirely up to him!

So I think this could be quite a big contest, it might last 53 days, to allow people to work on each of the 53 countries. Participants would be asked permission on whether they would accept their articles being placed into the big 10,000 list. I've moved the Destubathon out of the 10,000 Challenge area for neutrality purposes. I'm quite open to further additional prizes or distribution for articles which benefit Wiki Loves Women, but this depends on their support. I was hoping to run something in October but it might need to be pushed back to later October until the end of the year. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:51, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

I am a bit concerned that the focus is only on the number and not on the quality. I worry that it might favour too much quantity to the detriment of the quality. And worried that it might lead to edit war on the talk page to assess quality levels :)))) Any feedback on this ?

The other point is.... in the current scheme... there are over 60 prices. What will be exactly the nature of the price (cash, amazon voucher etc.) and who is going to do the work of collecting people name and information so that they get their price ? Anthere (talk)

Thankyou Anthere. The emphasis on this contest will be raw cleanup/basic improvement but to comply with the contest all entries must be of sound quality, and properly sourced/verifiable article with consistently formatted sources. I think if you look overall at the average article quality on the continent, we badly need something to improve the general basic standard and make them more consistent. So the focus I think for this is more on bulk/basic cleanup. A simple system, editors just put forward their articles with a # under each country. Whoever does the most articles for each country wins the $20 prize. Given that that amount is small and there are 53 countries I can't envisage much squabbling over that! At the end of the month, it is up to the editor then to claim a bonus prize, collect all of the articles they did in the month and rewards given out to 1st to 5th place.

Later contests, like the regional ones proposed, those would be the ones which focus more on the core articles and quality, but this is essentially a raw cleanup drive. Prizes will always be Amazon vouchers or books about Africa of the person's request, which will serve to further boost contest production at a later date. Somebody could ask for a book about Nigeria or something and then use that to contribute to one of the Nigerian contests etc.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:18, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Involving other language wikis

Perfectly open to this involving other wikipedias. French, Afrikaans, Arabic, Swahili and Yoruba etc are welcome to join in. But there would have to be somebody running pages on those wikis and to act as a go between and adding entries to the main content list here. The Dragon contest was a dual language one, but I see no reason why the other wikis couldn't get involved. The main problem I think is that a lot of them have lower standards for content so a lot of editors might not be up to English wiki referencing standards so we'd let down a lot of people by rejecting their entries. I think we could keep the idea open anyway, a dual one with French wikipedia definitely would work.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:49, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

I'm confused

No, it's an ongoing editathon/challenge which will continue beyond the contest, it started before the contest in September. The contest will be "dumped" into the the challenge once it's finished so we'll be near 3000 articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:45, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Cape Verde

Is there a reason why Cape Verde in not included in the scope of this challenge? Cape Verde was included in The Africa Destubathon so I'm not sure why it isn't included in this challenge. Thanks! --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 04:31, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

AfroCine: Join us for the Months of African Cinema in October!

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

Hosted by the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda, the first ever virtual Wiki Indaba conference is taking place online from the 5th to the 7th of November 2021 under the theme Rethink + Reset : Visions of the future.
