Sanction after apology?

The essay advises apologising for any bad conduct, and cautions, "you may be sanctioned for it anyway". Given the policy at WP:NOPUNISH, is this a likely outcome? Burninthruthesky (talk) 09:53, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It depends whether the Admin regards your own misconduct as a thing of the past or believes that you are to some extent unrepentant and gaming the opposing editor's bad behaviour. I have known several occasions where an editor brought a conduct dispute to ANI, only to be sanctioned as well. An open apology certainly helps but, if the Admin thinks you have not learned all the lessons of your misbehaviour yet, it may not necessarily be accepted as sufficient. For example if you apologise only for being rude, the Admin may still sanction you for lying. Also, on occasion I have seen an apology rejected by the Admins because it was grudgingly phrased and appeared more like wriggling than a sincere statement. There may be other scenarios, but I don't think the article should try to cover them all. It's worth mentioning WP:NOPUNISH in this context though.
