A spiritual predecessor

[edit]

At User talk:Spicy/Archive 6#Passing the baton, Girth Summit documented the baton's short-lived spiritual predecessor: as the outgoing 'newest admin', he congratulated ToBeFree at Special:Permalink/925554294#(Slightly early) congratulations!, who then passed the New Admin Torch to EvergreenFir (Special:Permalink/926376574#Congratulations). This all happened within five days in November 2019, so short-lived indeed. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 21:19, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Rotideypoc41352 @Girth Summit Very belatedly noted. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 19:40, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Belatedly noting your belated note - hope you're well, I've been a bit busy IRL lately... Girth Summit (blether) 22:42, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

As the images are presumably not fair use, I think it might be nice if the baton images were also added to the template.

They seem to have been quite well chosen : ) - jc37 21:00, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Comment

[edit]

Looking at this list, we've had more successful RFAs over the past two years than I thought. I know we still have an admin deficit but I was pleased to look over this list and see so many currently active admins from 2022-2024. Liz Read! Talk! 01:04, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Admin baton and elections

[edit]

Hi, all! Given that I am the current holder of the baton, I was wondering what the community process may be for passing the baton with elections where multiple people may become admins at once. There's specifically a question about who holds the baton to pass onto the next new admin. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 15:03, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, pass it to the first person who's sysopped in the log, and they pass it to the next, etc. You'd have a few people with a very short baton tenure, yes, but it seems like the best way and most loyal to the idea. It's probably what we'd do if we had two successful RfAs under the current system that closed at the same time. Elli (talk | contribs) 15:15, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I endorse this reading. And if someone in that succession wants to hold on to the baton for a few hours to marvel at its intricate filigree, that's fine. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 19:31, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also endorse it, it definitely makes the most sense. The time the person has the baton doesn't really matter, but I'd HOPE the recipients pass it off to the next person within 24 hours to keep it going. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:58, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I added something to the FAQ section.

Relatedly, if someone more creative than I am could come up with a better header than "Request" at the table (see HTML comment), I would appreciate it. (Or maybe we stick with "Request". It is starting to grow on me :D) HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:46, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Admin baton and reconfirmation

[edit]

Seeing as Worm That Turned is likely to be reconfirmed as an admin, I am wondering whether I ought to pass the baton. Given that the intent of the baton is to encourage seeking out new people to become admins, my gut says no, but I wanted to come here for others' thoughts. voorts (talk/contributions) 20:24, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say no as well. Sdkbtalk 23:18, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree in a case where someone is a sitting admin or a former admin clearly eligible for BN resysop. Less sure about a borderline case, e.g. someone who was in a mild controversy, resigns, and then later re-RfAs rather than find out whether 'crats would find a cloud exists. But there's probably no need to set a clear rule on that at this juncture.
Also, the purpose of the baton isn't to encourage new RfAs; it's to acknowledge the difficulty of going through RfA (or election). I'm personally of the opinion that encouraging people to run for adminship is unethical, given that adminship subjects people to a greater risk of emotional harm and even physical danger, and felt that way at the time I (re)started the tradition. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 00:38, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
