India towns bot

I am currently working on creating a bot that creates city/town articles in India based on on data provided by Census India 2001. Please check Aadityana and Aambaliyasan on the sandbox. Please let me know if anything else needs to be added to the article? I need your comments and suggestions before I run the program that creates all the missing towns/cities. I have some time since it is currently waiting for bot approval. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 08:47, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I would rewrite it as:

Aambaliyasan is a census town in Mahesana district in the state of Gujarat, India.

  • {add source}}

{{Gujarat-geo-stub}}

Is it possible to add the population and geo-coordinates? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

  1. I have changed the articles per your suggestion. Please check. I wikilinked census town which is a red link. For others town, it would show up as town and a gram panchayat, town and a municipality etc, where panchayat and municipality would be red links too. Is that okay?
  2. As for population, census website had a town-wise population count until december. Now they have stopped at state-level and want us buy a CD. I don't what to do about that. If another website has a backup or a excel file, that would be great.
  3. Geo-cooridinates: Is there a website that I can spider (slowly), to get these numbers?
Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 16:39, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
  1. I didn't get what you meant by For others town, it would show up as town
  2. Use http://www.archive.org/ to get information from previous editions of websites.
  3. This site [1] has geo-cordinates for a lot of Indian towns.

Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:49, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Reply:
City Name,Urban Status,State Code, State Name, District Code and District Name
Urban status could be census town, muncipality, notified area etc. For some towns I made the program create the article as "... is a town and a notified area...". These are cases where the words "city or town" are not part of the Urban status description. Hope that clarifies.
  • I will check the other two websites. Thanks for the links. Was amazed to see Archive.org.
Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 19:57, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
You'll have to populate the red links before you unleash the bot. =Nichalp «Talk»= 05:16, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Nichalp,
Implemented Changes:
  • Added population count
  • Added Geo-coordinates and Altitude
Please look at Aadityana, Aambaliyasan and Kodumudi and provide your comments. Kodumudi has geo-coordinates and altitude.
Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 08:30, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
I am still waiting for the bot approval. Not sure how that process works or how long it will take. I have updated the bot with geo-coords and demographics. Please check the Kodumudi article and comment. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 05:58, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
I've made some additions and copyedits on the talk page: User talk:Ganeshbot/sandbox/Testing/Kodumudi. I've also embedded some comments. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:56, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Implemented your new suggestions. You mentioned a line about language. I think it will be wrong to assume that Tamil would be the most spoken in all towns in Tamil Nadu. Census website does not provide this data. Your thoughts? - Ganeshk (talk) 20:10, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
I guess it would be safe to say that Tamil is the official language of the town. I wonder if we can get the info on languages from district websites? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:48, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Mentioning the official language is tricky too. I will have to make a list of states and their respective official language. Do we have such a list somewhere. Thanks again for all the help. Ganeshk (talk) 06:09, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Shall I use the list at List of national languages of India? - Ganeshk (talk) 06:12, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
The languages data should be available in the infoboxes on each state. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Can anyone tell me what the copyright status of this image (Image:PakSurrender.jpg) is? It seems to be from the Bharat Rakshak website, this page, which claim copyright. This is a very important image, and it is already used in several articles like Bangladesh, Bangladesh Liberation War etc. --Ragib 21:06, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Urdu question

If any of you speak Urdu and Arabic, please look at Human#Language and tell us on the talk page if the word in the image is Human in Urdu, Arabic, or if it is a shared word. Thank you so much! — goethean 17:14, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

The word in the image reads "Insaan". I can confirm that this has Arabic usage. I believe the word is also used in Urdu. Thanks AreJay 19:08, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

A help request from the translation desk

Two articles apparently in Tamil are currently under consideration at Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English. Could editors from here please take a look and help decide whether these articles should be deleted, transwikied or translated? Thank you, Kusma (討論) 03:19, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

The articles are now at AfD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/என் புதிய எழுத்துக்கள் and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/அ. முத்துலிங்கத்தின் புதிய எழுத்துக்கள். Kusma (討論) 00:08, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
The decision to delete those articles are right. The second article is vaguely relevant, but unlikely to get much traction. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:08, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
The second article had the same content (a short story) as the first one. Just a different title. I have no idea why this user thought Wikipedia is the place to write short stories. I have put the writer's article up for deletion. Please comment. - Ganeshk (talk) 14:41, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

South India is this week's Indian Colloboration of the Week. Please come and help it become a featured-standard article. - Ganeshk (talk) 01:31, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

I've noticed that Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir are listed under this category. As far as I can tell, they were born in Madhya Pradesh and Delhi respectively, and are not based in Mumbai or Maharashtra for any cricketing purposes. So what is the basis for classifying them as such?? I also noticed Atul Kulkarni, who appears to be born in Belgaum. ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! 06:56, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't know about Gambhir, but Dravid, though born outside MH, is Maharashtrian by descent. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Couldn't this open a can of worms, with different ancestral groups claiming people to be "one of theirs" - We wouldn't go and categorize Kevin Pietersen as Dutch or Michael Kasporwicz as Polish would we?ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! 08:16, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Map of India

In the map of India, the map wrongly shows that a third of Kashmir has been occupied by Pakistan. That part of Kashmir was occupied by Pakistan in the Kargil War and was won back by India. Hence it should be a part of India not Pakintan. This should be mentioned clearly in the Article and the map must be changed to show the correct one. I am not so sure about the China Border, that too needs to be checked form a government of India site or a reputed international one. But I am quite sure of the Pakistan Border. All the maps have the same error and they need to be rectified —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sirius Wallace (talkcontribs)

This is incorrect. A third of Kashmir was conquered by Pakistan before and during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947. Kargil was part of the Indian Kashmir, which India won back during the Kargil War. The map is accurate. AreJay 19:19, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

With so many languages and different cultures, there should really be some form of standardization to look to references for India-related articles.

the following are good examples:

India state elections 2006

I have started articles India state assembly elections, 2006 and Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 2006. This is a great opportunity for us to collaborate and get these articles updated real-time. Please join and contribute. - Ganeshk (talk) 08:03, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Have posted a similar message on the template's talk page, but thought I would post here too - Wikipedia:WikiProject Politics of India should also be added to the India links welcome template. That would make new Indian users aware of the wikiproject. If there is consensus then I will add the project to the template soon. - Aksi_great (talk) 16:15, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Template:Indian-politician-photo

Please view my sandbox here. I am proposing a template based on Template:Canada-politician-photo to use for Indian politicians. If there is consensus then we can use images from the Government of India website to identify Indian politicians. - Aksi_great (talk) 16:52, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Support - I have uploaded some politicians snaps from the Government website and marked them as Fairusein. Your template will correctly describe them. - Ganeshk (talk) 18:10, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Here is why we need this. I had marked the Image:Trbaalu_02_15_2006.jpg as {{PD-IndiaGov}}. Someone just tagged it speedy delete. Ganeshk (talk) 18:20, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
I have uploaded into the English Wikipedia now as Image:Trbaalu_04_23_2006.jpg. {{PD-IndiaGov}} was not fairuse when I had uploaded it originally. The template is gone now. So it's best load these into English Wikipedia instead of Commons. - Ganeshk (talk) 19:39, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Support. This should clarify the issue once and for all. BTW, the image Ganeshk was refering to will definitely be deleted as Fairuse images are not to be uploaded in commons, but only in the specific language wikipedia where it can be justified as fairuse (here English Wikipedia). -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 18:57, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi Shyam, I don't exactly see where we claim license. I think this is the standard form of the template we use for specific fair uses. And btw, we don't need to have a vote ;) on every thing. --Gurubrahma 05:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Okay, then we can use this template. Shyam (T/C) 05:57, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
I have already created the template Template:India-politician-photo and related category. Will start with the T.R. Baalu image. - Aksi_great (talk) 06:53, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Template currently being used for 2 images - Image:Trbaalu_04_23_2006.jpg and Image:Harin_pathak.jpg. The only reason why I started this discussion/"vote" was that this template will be potentially used for hundreds of images of MPs, MLAs and other politicians. Now other users can use this template too. Please add the source url in the summary. - Aksi_great (talk) 07:34, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Indian district naming

User:Tom Radulovich has changed names of Indian district articles (d->D). The convention was to have the small 'd' in the names. Please refer here and also a vote here. Thoughts? - Ganeshk (talk) 20:47, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

I've moved the voting to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indian districts. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:11, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Somebody who appears to be from this company keeps on removing the {{advertisement}} tag from this very ad-like article. I haven't been able to find a website -is it notable? Regards, ßlηguγΣη | Have your say!!! - review me 04:00, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

They appear to be posting from Chandigarh, which is in the proximity of Delhi. The article says they have one of their offices there. This is advertising and will fail most, if not all of the bullets listed in WP:CORP. AreJay 04:24, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Well, yes and no...there are many online databases that map out IP addresses from ARIN, RIPE and others. Downloading the databases could take a while though. I just use this tool instead. The second column has a "City from IP" form. AreJay 05:11, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Oh, just as an FYI, I've listed the article for AfD. AreJay 16:24, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

This article was nominated for deletion as an A7 speedy deletion with claims that there are no assertions of notability. I removed the tag and tidied up the article some.

However, I would appreciate some advice on verifiability and notability. I haven't been able to find much on him but I live in Australia and Google isn't of much help as he lived in Bengal in the 19th century.

There is also an article on Akshay Kumar Datta which is very similar. I would be grateful about your advice as to what we should do with these article/s.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Capitalistroadster (talkcontribs)
